Opis:
The present survey, as part of larger project, is devoted to properties of pure linear models of yaw motion for directionally stable ships, of the first- and second-order, sometimes referred to as the Nomoto models. In rather exhaustive way, it exactly compares and explains both models in that what is being lost in the zigzag behaviour, if the reduction to the simpler, first-order dynamics (K-T model) is attempted with the very famous [Nomoto et al., 1957] approximation: T = T1+T2-T3. The latter three time constants of the second-order model, more physically sound, are strictly dependent on the hydrodynamic coefficients of an essential part of the background full-mission manoeuvring model. The approximation of real ship behaviour in either of the mentioned linearity orders, and the corresponding complex parameters may facilitate designing and evaluating ship steering, and identifying some regions of advanced nonlinear models, where linearisation is valid. As a novel outcome of the conducted investigation, a huge inadequacy of such a first-order model for zigzag simulation is reported. If this procedure is used for determining steering quality indices, those would be of course inadequate, and the process of utilizing them (e.g. autopilot) inefficient.
W artykule przedstawiono analizę krytyczną konsekwencji upraszczania równania liniowego Nomoto drugiego rzędu prędkości kątowej statku do postaci pierwszego rzędu z punktu widzenia symulacji próby wężowej. Stwierdzono nieadekwatność (niezgodność z pierwotnym zachowaniem) zredukowanego modelu przy zastosowaniu klasycznych kryteriów [Nomoto et al., 1957]. Model drugiego rzędu (4-parametrowy) prędkości kątowej bezpośrednio wynika z elementarnego układu dwóch sprzężonych liniowych równań róźniczkowych prędkości kątowej i kąta dryfu — zmiennych opisujących podstawowe ruchy manewrowe statku. Choć dziedziczy ścisłe podstawy hydrodynamiczne, model drugiego rzędu jest wciąż trudny do identyfikacji w oparciu o proste próby manewrowe, m.in. wspomnianą próbę wężową.

Opis:
In this paper a simple four-point, in terms of time, but eight-value in total, identification method has been developed for the second-order linear Nomoto steering model. The algorithm intrinsically uses the zigzag test data in that it inherited some principles of the well-known procedure for the first-order model, from which it is essentially derived. The performance evaluation was then conducted with both simulated and real data. However, the results of these early, unprecedented efforts are far from satisfactory. Some potential sources of difficulties have been discussed. This calls for further research and improvement in order to provide a practical application of the method.

Opis:
The problem of considerable difference between the first- and second-order linear Nomoto models is undertaken, not well covered in literature so far. If the former approximates the latter (better one, of a sound hydrodynamic interpretation) for some reasons, its parameters can not be easily derived from the other one, except for some specific rare cases. For such an identification purpose, we can use a simulated zigzag response and the classic procedure proposed by Nomoto in 1960. However, the first-order model thus developed yields somehow redefined constants against the original model, which lose their normal hydrodynamic (or kinematic) sense. In other words, it is very sensitive to the manoeuvre type on input, being therein the zigzag test. Therefore, the model is allowed to be only used for simulating motions essentially similar to the input zigzag. In other words, the identification procedure works like a blind curve-fitting and the first-order model (in contrast to second-order one) is inadequate for reflecting arbitrary manoeuvres, even for mild rudder as to be within 'linear' assumptions. This study examines systematically and in detail such an incompatibility of the first order model in that it presents the conversion charts from the standpoint of 10°/10° zigzag test matching. One can receive higher or lower values for the parameters of first-order model, versus the second-order one, depending on the T3/T2 ratio of the latter model.
Artykuł zawiera systematyczne wyniki identyfikacji liniowego modelu Nomoto pierwszego rzędu na podstawie symulowanej próby wężowej różnych wariantów modelu drugiego rzędu. W toku analizy stwierdzono ogólną nieadekwatność (strukturalną) modelu pierwszego rzędu do symulacji dowolnych manewrów, w przeciwieństwie do modelu drugiego rzędu, nawet w granicach liniowości dynamiki statku. Wyniki identyfikacji silnie bowiem zależą od rozpatrywanego manewru.

Opis:
In this study, a new composite laminated shell model is proposed for free vibration and stability analysis based on the refined zigzag theory (RZT). In contrast to the published shell models based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT), piecewise-linear zigzag functions are utilized to provide a more realistic representation of deformation states of a transverse shear-flexible shell. In the present formulation, the governing equations and boundary conditions of composite laminated shells are established by d’Alembert’s principle to obtain natural frequencies and critical buckling loadings. In order to evaluate the effectiveness and performance of the present new model for composite laminated shells, examples of free vibration and buckling analysis are carried out for cylindrical and spherical shells involving different lamination schemes and design parameters. The results are compared with the three dimensional (3D) exact, first-order and some high-order solutions in the literature. Numerical results show that the present model not only has high accuracy but also has superior computational efficiency in comparison with high-order models, such that it may show a great potential in engineering applications.

Opis:
To improve the power quality of a multi-pulse rectifier, a zigzag 18-pulse uncontrolled rectifier with an auxiliary circuit at the DC side is proposed. When the grid-side currents are sinusoidal waves, the required DC side injection currents to be compensated can be obtained by analyzing the AC-DC side relationship of diode bridge rectifiers. Then the 6 compensation currents generated by an active auxiliary circuit are injected into the DC side to eliminate the grid-side harmonics of the rectifier. The simulation results verifying the correctness of the theoretical analysis show that the proposed rectifier can mitigate the harmonic content, as the total harmonic distortion of the grid-side current is about 1.45%. In addition, the single-phase inverter used in the active auxiliary circuit has the characters of simple circuit structure and easy controllability.

The article considers energy losses in a Fabry-Perot laser resonator and zigzag laser in form of a flat truncated prism. It refines the values of the harmful losses of the zigzag laser three-mirror optical resonator, in which apart from material losses on absorption and scattering in the matrix of the active media, the losses on the radiation transferring through the non-ideal reflecting mirrors that provide a zigzag course of the beam in the cavity are included. The dependences of the losses coefficient on the design parameters of the three-mirror zigzag laser resonator are also analyzed.

The log-periodic dipole array (LPDA) consist of an array of dipoles in which there have a different lengths and spacing. The wire may be straight or it may be strung back and forth between trees or walls just to get enough wire into the air; this type of antenna sometimes is called a zigzag antenna. Rumsey’s principle requires that the locations of all elements be specified by angles rather than distances, because of this the log periodic dipole array must be correspondingly longer to get very wide bandwidths and gives a very high data rate transmission. The significance of this study is to understand how do the LPDA can be used to monitor solar activities of the sun using the LPDA antenna. The characteristics that need to be considered during construct this antenna is the radiation pattern, polarization, operation of the frequency band, gain and efficiency of an antenna which indicates the power or field strength radiated in any direction relative to that in the direction of maximum radiation. The arrangement of elements in increasing order from the top of the antenna until the bottom part of antenna. Our designed antenna was constructed using aluminum for the further investigation, we can use a copper and check the difference between two of this element. For this study, we just analyzed the source of RFI using this antenna and for the further analysis, we can use this antenna to monitor the solar burst.

Thermoelectric properties of silicene nanoribbons doped with magnetic impurity atoms are investigated theoretically for both antiparallel and parallel orientations of the edge magnetic moments. Spin density distribution and transport parameters have been determined by ab-initio numerical methods based on the density functional theory. Doping with magnetic atoms considerably modifies the spin density distribution, leading to a ground state with a non-zero magnetic moment. Apart from this, the spin thermopower can be considerably enhanced by the impurity atoms.

Multiobjective geometric programming (MOGP) is a powerful optimization technique widely used for solving a variety of nonlinear optimization problems and engineering problems. Generally, the parameters of a multiobjective geometric programming (MOGP) models are assumed to be deterministic and fixed. However, the values observed for the parameters in real-world MOGP problems are often imprecise and subject to fluctuations. Therefore, we use MOGP within an uncertainty based framework and propose a MOGP model whose coefficients are uncertain in nature. We assume the uncertain variables (UVs) to have linear, normal or zigzag uncertainty distributions and show that the corresponding uncertain chance-constrained multiobjective geometric programming (UCCMOGP) problems can be transformed into conventional MOGP problems to calculate the objective values. The paper develops a procedure to solve a UCCMOGP problem using an MOGP technique based on a weighted-sum method. The efficacy of this procedure is demonstrated by some numerical examples.

Motivated by recent advances in fabricating graphene nanostructures, we find that an electron can be trapped in Z-shaped graphene nanoconstriction with zigzag edges. The central section of the constriction operates as a single-level quantum dot, as the current flow towards the adjunct sections (rotated by 60°) is strongly suppressed due to mismatched valley polarization, although each section in isolation shows maximal quantum value of the conductance $G_0 = 2e^2//h$. We further show that the trapping mechanism is insensitive to the details of constriction geometry, except from the case when widths of the two neighboring sections are equal. The relation with earlier studies of electron transport through symmetric and asymmetric kinks with zigzag edges is also established.

This study shows that magnetic edge states of graphene-like nanoribbons enhance effectively the thermoelectric performance. This is due to the antiparallel alignment of magnetic moments on opposite zigzag edges and the confinement effect, which jointly lead to the appearance of a gap in the electronic energy spectrum. Consequently, the Seebeck coefficient as well as the thermoelectric power factor get strongly enhanced (with respect to other alignment cases) at room temperature and energies not far away from the charge neutrality point. Moreover the corresponding figure of merit (ZT) is also improved as a result of the reduced electronic thermal conductance.

We studied magnetic properties of a composite of paraffin and graphene flakes. Magnetic properties of this composite were investigated by ferromagnetic resonance/electron spin resonance technique. The ferromagnetic resonance signal from graphene suspension in paraffin is broad and shifted from magnetic field corresponding to g ≈ 2 to the low magnetic field. The temperature dependence of the spectra shows that magnetic ordering in the studied system is sensitive to thermal fluctuations. These features are expected for the 1D ferromagnetism and the obtained results are analyzed in the frame of the theoretical predictions concerning magnetic correlations at graphene edges. Therefore, based on our investigation we can conclude the existence of the magnetic edges in graphene and presence of the ferromagnetic correlations between edge spins.

Opis:
The production of thermal energy from solar energy by flat collectors finds nowadays many applications due to their innumerable economic and environmental interests. Currently, conservation of energy resources has become a global priority. On the other hand, given the dizzying demand for energy, has led specialists to find new techniques, such as renewable energies (solar, wind and geothermal). The present work is a contribution, by numerical simulation, to the study of heat transfer in flat solar collectors. On the basis of some experimental data, several simulation calculations have been carried out in order to determine the influencing parameters allowing better performance of the sensors and ensuring a good homogeneity of the temperature distributions. Based on the observation that, due to the low thermophysical properties of the air used as heat transfer fluid, solar air collectors rather give poor yields. It has been found very useful to have ‘baffling’ obstacles of various shapes and forms in the solar collector duct. This increases the thermal transfer of a coolant, which clearly improves the thermal efficiency of the solar air collector. This article consists mainly of studying the effects on heat transfer of turbulent forced convection by baffles of zigzag shapes, placed in a rectangular channel, using the finite volume method. The pressure-velocity coupling has been processed by the SIMPLEC algorithm. The results are presented in terms of the average Nusselt number and temperature field for different positions.

Opis:
An efficient C0 continuous finite element (FE) model is developed based on a combined theory (refine higher order shear deformation theory (RHSDT) and least square error (LSE) method) for the static analysis of a soft core sandwich plate. In this (RHSDT) theory, the in-plane displacement field for the face sheets and the core is obtained by superposing a global cubically varying displacement field on a zig-zag linearly varying displacement field with a different slope in each layer. The transverse displacement assumes to have a quadratic variation within the core and it remains constant in the faces beyond the core. The proposed model satisfies the condition of transverse shear stress continuity at the layer interfaces and the zero transverse shear stress condition at the top and bottom of the sandwich plate. The nodal field variables are chosen in an efficient manner to circumvent the problem of C1 continuity requirement of the transverse displacements. In order to calculate the accurate through thickness transverse stresses variation, the Least Square Error (LSE) method has been used at the post processing stage. The proposed combined model (RHSDT and LSE) is implemented to analyze the laminated composites and sandwich plates. Many new results are also presented which should be useful for future research.

Opis:
Lopha staufferi (Bergquist, 1944) is a medium-sized, ribbed, Late Cretaceous oyster with a slightly curved axis and a zigzag commissure; it appears suddenly and conspicuously in upper Cenomanian rocks in the Western Interior Basin of the United States. At maturity, the ribs on both valves thicken into steep flanks that allow the oyster to increase interior volume without increasing its exterior footprint on the seafloor. Lopha staufferi is the first (earliest) ribbed oyster in the Late Cretaceous of the Western Interior, but has no ancestor in the basin. It disappears from the rock record as suddenly as it appeared, leaving no direct descendent in the basin. In the southern part of the basin where it is well constrained, L. staufferi is restricted stratigraphically to the upper Cenomanian Metoicoceras mosbyense Zone (= Dunveganoceras conditum Zone in the north). Lopha staufferi has an unusual paleogeographic distribution, occurring in only two, widely scattered areas in the basin. It has been found at several localities near the western shoreline of the Late Cretaceous Seaway in west-central New Mexico and adjacent Arizona, and in localities 1,900 km (1,200 mi) to the northeast near the eastern shoreline in northeastern Minnesota, but nowhere in between. In west-central New Mexico and adjacent Arizona, L. staufferi is a guide fossil to the Twowells Tongue of the Dakota Sandstone.
