Opis:
Anaerobic co-digestion of sewage sludge and corn silage with zero-valent iron powder (Fe0), cellulase, and papain as reinforcement means was conducted. COD-based feeding ratio of sewage sludge to corn silage was set to 2:1, the solids retention time (SRT) 20 day, digestion temperature 35 °C, and mixing speed 60 rpm. Removal rates of total COD during the control group, and Fe0, papain, cellulase, and papain, Fe0, and the two kinds of enzyme-added tests were 38.04, 41.02, 34.62, 34.55, 35.42, and 48.21%, respectively. The corresponding biogas production was 2.12, 2.62, 2.22, 2.41, 2.25, and 2.81 dm3/day, respectively. The results indicated the addition of cellulase, and papain could maximize the decomposition and hydrolysis of organic matter in sewage sludge and corn silage to volatile fatty acids. Fe0 could reduce the redox potentials of the anaerobic co-digestion, optimize the circumstances of the methanogenesis stage, accelerate biogas production, and improve biogas components. Fe0 and enzymes played a synergistic role in the anaerobic co-digestion system. Life cycle assessment indicated that the anaerobic co-digestion of sludge and corn silage co-substrates could benefit the economy, environment, and social development under the synergistic action of Fe0 and enzymes.

Opis:
Batch studies were conducted to investigate the potential of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane modified nano zero-valent iron (APS-NZVI) to adsorb two dyes (acid brilliant scarlet GR and reactive brilliant red K-2BP) from aqueous solution. APS-NZVI showed good adsorption performance for two dyes. Under the adsorption conditions of pH 4.5, initial concentration was 100 mg/L, and time=4h, the maximum adsorption capacities of APS-NZVI were 121.06 mg/g for acid brilliant scarlet GR and 191.5 mg/g for reactive brilliant red K-2BP, respectively. The results revealed that the adsorption behavior of the dyes on the nano-particles fitted well with the Langmuir model and the sorption kinetics fits well the pseudo-second-order rate equation.

Opis:
Two methods of Reactive Black 5 dye removal were compared in this work, namely electrocoagulation (EC) and one based on spontaneous electrochemical oxidation of zero-valent iron (ZVI). Both methods are based on electrode processes and the sorption process and allow to achieve a similar effectiveness of dye removal. In the case of ZVI, however, a longer contact time or a greater surface area of the electrodes applied is necessary. In turn, the ZVI enables to conduct the processes of dye removal with no requirement for an external source of electric current (lower exploitation inputs). The study demonstrated that the application of both the ZVI method and EC is especially advisable in the case of lower initial concentrations of dye in the solution, i.e. the higher the concentration, the lower the contribution of electrode processes in dye removal from the solution and the greater the contribution of sorption processes.
W ramach niniejszej pracy porównano dwie metody usuwania barwnika Reactive Black 5.

Opis:
Adsorption properties, including isotherms and kinetics, of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) for Cu(II) and Zn(II) removal from synthetic mine drainage were evaluated in batch tests. The influence of contact time, nZVI doses, pH, ionic strength, temperature, and concentration on nZVI adsorption properties was assessed. The removal of Cu(II) and Zn(II) increased with pH from 3 to 7 and then stabilized up to pH 10. Moreover, the increased Cu(II) adsorption capacity upon increasing temperature and a positive enthalpy change (ΔH) indicate that the adsorption process is endothermic. The results also showed that the adsorption equilibrium for Cu(II) and Zn(II) was achieved after 50 and 30 min, respectively. Kinetics were best described by a pseudo-nth order model, with the order of sorption of 2.231 and 1.363, and the rate constants of 0.0008 and 0.0679 mg1-n·gn-1/min, for Cu(II) and Zn(II), respectively. The correlation between the amount of metals adsorbed on nZVI surface and the residual amount of metals in water during isothermal tests was best described by the nonlinear Sips model. Using this model, high q maxS were found: 286.6 mg/g and 142.6 mg/g, for Cu(II) and Zn(II), respectively, as indication of their high sorption capacity.

Opis:
The industrial dumping sites located in the southern provinces of Poland pollute groundwaters with metals. In the article, the possibility of groundwater (polluted by metals) treatment with the use of Permeable Reactive Barrier Technology has been presented. In this technology, the contaminants are removed from the aquifer by a flow of the groundwater through a PRB filled with a special reactive material. The wastewater (which simulated groundwater) circulated through the column filled with zero-valent iron in the laboratory tests. During the tests, the treatment processes proceeded. Chromium, copper, nick-el, cobalt, lead, cadmium and zinc, occurring in the water as cations and anions, have been removed in the iron bed. The rapid metal removal has likely occurred due to the reduction and precipitation/co-precipitation and/or due to adsorption onto the iron metal surface or/and onto the iron corrosion products. Barium Ba2+ was the only metal, which has not been removed from the wastewater in the column. A rapid decrease of the redox potential and oxygen concentration as well as an increases of the pH value and stabilizations have also been observed during the flow of water through the column. Due to the Fe/Fe2+ half reaction during the treatment processes, the iron concentration has increased as well.

Batch tests have been used to assess the level of the removal of metals (copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, and chromium, in cationic and in anionic forms) from water at low pH values affected by acid mine drainage. The predominant processes which result in the removal with the use of zero-valent iron (Fe0) in Permeable Reactive Barrier Technology were evaluated. The most probable processes for each metal have been presented in drawings. There are: reductive precipitation leading to the metallic form, co-precipitation mainly with iron in the form of oxides and/or hydroxides and adsorption on the surface of iron corrosion products or on the surface of zero-valent iron.

The subject of the research covered in this paper is the removal of copper (Cu2+) cations from water at low pH (initial values of pH 3 and 6) by means of zero-valent iron. The chemical states and atomic concentrations of solids formed on the surface of zero-valent iron, and the type of deposited polycrystalline substances have been analyzed with the use of XPS and XRD. The type of process causing the copper removal from water at low pH, corresponding to the effect of acid mine drainage, has been identified by analyzing the changes of physicochemical parameters and specified chemicals content in water. Cu2+ was removed from water for the initial pH of 6 was much more effective than at lower pH. The formation of CuxFe3-xO4 , where x≤1, and to a lesser degree Cu2O, Cu0 and/or CuO and/or Cu2S, were the basic processes of the removal of copper at almost neutral pH of water (pH about 6), while the formation of copper in metallic form and Cu2O, as well as probably CuO, were the basic processes for lower pH (pH about 3). The adsorption of Cu2+ on the surface of shell covering square-shaped cold-rolled steel sheet cell was an additional process causing the removal of copper from water at almost neutral pH.

The coal mine waste dumps located in the southern provinces of Poland pollute groundwater with metals. As a result of batch experiments presented in the paper, it can be said that it is possible to remove chromium and copper from the groundwater (which is affected by acid mine drainage, thus characterized by low pH) with the use of zero-valent iron in permeable reactive barrier technology. A rapid decrease of the redox potential as well as the increases of pH have also been observed in the batch tests when the dose of Fe(0) in solutions increased.

In this work, kaolinite modified with zero-valent iron was synthesized and used as a sorbent for Pb(II) and Mo(VI) removal from aqueous solutions. The obtained material was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The methods revealed successful modification by the Fe0 particles precipitation on the surface of well-ordered kaolinite. The sorption experiment results showed a significant increase of sorption capacity in relation to the raw kaolinite. The kaolinite with 25% content of Fe0 was found to be the best material for Pb(II) and Mo(VI) removal, resulting in approximately 500 mmol•kg-1 and 350 mmol•kg-1 sorption, respectively. The possible mechanisms responsible for metals’ removal were identified as reduction by Fe0 ‘core’ and adsorption on the iron hydroxides ‘shell’. The study indicated that the obtained material is capable of efficient Pb(II) and Mo(VI) removal and may be an interesting alternative to other methods used for heavy metals’ removal.

Opis:
Zero-valent iron (ZVI) represent a promising agent for environmental remediation. The research was aimed to determine the influence of copper in doses of 0, 80, 150, 300, and 600 mg Cu·kg–1 of soil as well as ZVI, and lignite additives on the content of macroelements in the Indian mustard (Brassica juncea (L.) Czern.). The average accumulation of analyzing elements in Indian mustard grown in copper contaminated soil were found to follow the decreasing order Mg > Na > P > Ca > K > N. Soil contamination at 600 mg Cu·kg–1 of soil led to the highest increase in P, Mg, N, and Ca content. The application of ZVI had a positive influence on the average phosphorus and potassium content of Indian mustard. Moreover, the application of ZVI and lignite had a positive influence on the average Mg and Ca content in the above-ground parts of Indian mustard. From the analyzed reactive materials, the application of lignite was shown to be the most effective resulting in the decrease in the average nitrogen and calcium content when compared to the control crop. Calcium content in plants from the control group, without the addition of zero-valent iron, and powered lignite (control), was positively correlated with increasing doses of copper.
Zakres badań obejmował określenie wpływu zanieczyszczenia gleby miedzią (0, 80, 150, 300 i 600 mg Cu·kg–1) oraz dodatku żelaza elementarnego (ZVI) i węgla brunatnego na zawartość wybranych makroelementów w gorczycy sarepskiej (Brassica juncea (L.) Czern.). Średnia zawartość analizowanych makroskładników w gorczycy rosnącej na glebie zanieczyszczonej miedzią kształtowała się następująco: Mg > Na > P > Ca > K > N. Gleba zanieczyszczona w dawce 600 mg Cu·kg–1 spowodowała zwiększenie zawartości P, Mg, N i Ca. Dodatek żelaza elementarnego (ZVI) wywarł pozytywny wpływ na średnią zawartość fosforu i potasu w Brassica juncea. Ponadto ZVI i węgiel brunatny wpływały pozytywnie na średnią zawartość Mg i Ca w częściach nadziemnych analizowanej rośliny. Spośród dodawanych do gleby analizowanych materiałów reaktywnych węgiel brunatny spowodował największy wzrost zawartości azotu i wapnia w częściach nadziemnych analizowanej rośliny.

In this paper the physical and mechanical properties of reactive materials are presented. Reactive materials are build the reactive zone of permeable reactive barrier (PRB) used for the remediation of contaminated groundwater. Up till now the criteria for selecting a reactive material for PRB are included only the remediation and hydraulic properties of materials. However, physical and mechanical properties of these materials have to be taking into account due to the engineering aspect of design parameters of PRB in groundwater, as well as their stability and longevity. The paper presents the results of shear strength and compressibility properties of selected reactive materials that may be considered during the selection of construction technology of barrier and to verify the ultimate limit states during the design stage of PBR.

In this paper, the ability of nZVI to remove heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) from multicomponent aqueous solutions was investigated through batch experiments. The experimental data were fitted to a second-order kinetic model based on solid capacity. The data for copper and lead fitted well into the second-order kinetic model, thus suggesting that the adsorption had a physical character. The values of the removal ratio and the second-order rate constant indicated that the order of adsorption priority of nZVI was as follows: Pb>Cu>Zn>Cd>Ni. The adsorption isotherm data were described by the most conventional models (Henry, Freundlich, and Langmuir). Equilibrium tests showed that copper and zinc were removed from the solution by adsorption processes, i.e., complexation and competitive adsorption. The test results suggested that the removal processes using nZVI are more kinetic than equilibrium. The study demonstrated that nZVI is favorable reactive material; however, comprehensive investigation should be performed for further in situ applications in PRB technology.

Opis:
The abiotic transformations of 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) has been examined in the presence and of zero valent iron (Fe(0)) under subcritical conditions. It was found that the degradation of DCP was significantly enhanced, showing complete degradation of DCP in 3 h at 300 °C. Control experiments without Fe(0) indicated that the removal of DCP in the iron–water system was mostly due to subcritical water oxidation and that the enhancement of degradation in the presence of Fe(0) was less significant. Regardless of Fe(0), PCBs were rapidly decomposed, showing 93% destruction in 5 h at 300 °C. Product identification by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis showed that the reductive transformation of DCP and PCBs w Fe(0) existed under subcritical conditions. Our results suggest that subcritical water degradation may be a possible remediation option to treat DCP and PCBs in water and soil.

Opis:
The phenolic compounds are known as priority pollutants, even in low concentrations, as a result of their toxicity and non-biodegradability. For this reason, strict standards have been established for them. In addition, chlorophenols are placed in the 38th to 43th in highest priority order of toxic pollutants. As a consequence, contaminated water or wastewaters with phenolic compounds have to be treated before discharging into the receiving water. In this study, Response Surface Methodology (RSM) has been used in order to optimize the effect of main operational variables responsible for the higher 4-chlorophenol removal by Activated Carbon-Supported Nanoscale Zero Valent Iron (AC/NZVI). A Box-Behnken factorial Design (BBD) with three levels was applied to optimize the initial concentration, time, pH, and adsorbent dose. The characterization of adsorbents was conducted by using SEM-EDS and XRD analyses. Furthermore, the adsorption isotherm and kinetics of 4-chlorophenol on AC and AC/NZVI under various conditions were studied. The model anticipated 100% removal efficiency for AC/NZVI at the optimum concentration (5.48 mg 4-chlorophenol/L), pH (5.44), contact time (44.7 min) and dose (0.65g/L). Analysis of the response surface quadratic model signified that the experiments are accurate and the model is highly significant. Moreover, the synthetic adsorbent is highly efficient in removing of 4-chlorophenol.
