Patomorfologia to dziedzina medycyny zajmująca się rozpoznawaniem, klasyfikacją oraz prognozowaniem chorób na podstawie zmian morfologicznych w komórkach, tkankach i narządach. Zabezpiecza diagnostykę całego zakresu medycyny klinicznej (onkologicznej i nieonkologicznej). Jej rola jest kluczowa w wykrywaniu nowotworów. Z ustaleń Najwyższej Izby Kontroli wynika, że głównym problemem było dotychczas niewprowadzenie odrębnego finansowania takich badań oraz długi okres oczekiwania na wynik, co wydłużało czas na postawienie diagnozy i rozpoczęcie leczenia pacjenta. Brakowało lekarzy specjalistów, a zakłady i pracownie diagnostyki patomorfologicznej były nierównomiernie rozmieszczone, co miało wpływ na dostępność ich usług.
Anatomical pathology examinations are indispensable for diagnosing diseases and re cognising tumours. They are a necessary element in deciding on therapies. The results of such examinations are decisive for the further treatment of a patient, for prognosis and selection of treatment methods. However, the way in which anatomical patholo gy is organised and financed does not allow for its availability and does not guarantee its proper quality. The reasoning behind undertaking the audit is the need to wait long for examination results, which prolongs the making of a diagnosis and starting the treatment, the lack of dedicated financing, defined procedures and the reliable estimation of their costs, inappropriate location of centres that make such examina tions, common outsourcing, and problems with ensuring appropriate quality. There are not enough anatomical pathologists and doctors willing to specialise in the field. In the audit, which covered the years 2017–2019, NIK examined the organisation of anatomical pathology diagnostics, the access to examinations, and supervision of the quality of tests.
