The paper raises the question of the role of Biblical tradition in the transfer and adaptation of modern ideas in cultures rooted in Eastern-Orthodox tradition. The subject of reflection is the narrative about St. Clement of Ohrid, the most famous disciple of SS. Cyril and Methodius, and its various literary paraphrases during the interwar period in Bulgaria, in the context of modernist reading of the Bible, as well as the ambivalent experience of secularization among the local intellectual elites.
W artykule poruszono kwestię roli tradycji biblijnej w transferze i adaptacji idei nowoczesności na gruncie kultur prawosławnych. Przedmiotem namysłu jest narracja o św. Klemensie z Ochrydy, najsłynniejszym uczniu św. św. Cyryla i Metodego, oraz jej literackie parafrazy z okresu międzywojennego w Bułgarii — rozpatrywane w kontekście modernistycznego odczyt(yw)ania Biblii, a także ambiwalentnego doświadczenia sekularyzacji ze strony lokalnych elit intelektualnych.

The article describes Victor Erofeyev’s essay Love for stupidity, in which the Russianpostmodernist comes up with an uncompromising objection to the mass culture. The defence of high literature as an existential signpost leading to timeless values  is placed by the author in the socio-political context of modernization challenges faced by contemporaryRussia. Alongside highlighting this less familiar theme of Erofeyev’s works the analysis aims at drawing attention to the aporias in the writer’s considerations as well as confronting the essay with another sketches devoted to the changes of literary life in the conditions of the consumer society.

Opis:
Album artwork research tends to focus on aspects related to usability and graphics, while frequently ignoring other elements of cover art – the paraphernalia of phonograms represented by functionally diversified texts. Their importance has been recognised with the Grammy Award for Best Album Notes, awarded for excellent liner (sleeve) notes in phonographic publications. This article focuses on to the diverse character of the onymic elements in the sleeve notes on Fragile, the fourth studio album by Yes. Specifically, the songs are divided into those representing the band as a whole and its individual members separately. Proper names emerge in this example as a categorically diverse group, with each of them demanding an individual research approach considering a broad context and at times even extending beyond the album’s multi-code communication. Ideonyms of the works constitute a particular group. Frequently they feature several variants, which hinders their delimitation. Determining their proper form is important as it is the starting point for further analysis.

Kategoria „religii przyszłości”, która była przedmiotem dociekań filozoficznych Maurycego Straszewskiego, obecna jest także we współczesnym dyskursie filozoficznym, teologicznym czy antropologicznym. Straszewski podkreślał, że kultura, postęp naukowy, historia filozofii nierozerwalnie związane są z historią religii i teologią. Akcentował istotę potrzeb religijnych dla samego powstania systemów dogmatycznych, jak i filozofii. Współcześnie mamy do czynienia z jednej strony z sekularyzacją, z drugiej ze swoistą rewitalizacją religii. Obecny powrót religijności różni się od wcześniejszych globalnym zasięgiem i jego oryginalnymi postaciami, a także wiąże się z swoistego rodzaju „zawieszeniem” dotychczasowych wyznaczników religii, takich jak dogmat, autorytet, kult, ortodoksja.
The category of ‘religion of the future’, which was the subject of Maurycy Straszewski’s philosophical inquiries, is also present in contemporary philosophical, theological or anthropological discourse. Straszewski emphasised that culture, scientific progress and the history of philosophy are inextricably linked to the history of religion and theology. He emphasised the importance of religious needs for the very emergence of dogmatic systems as well as philosophy. Nowadays, we deal with secularisation, on the one hand, and a kind of revitalisation of religion, on the other. The current revival of religiosity differs from earlier ones in its global scope and its original forms, and also involves a kind of ‘suspension’ of the previous determinants of religion, such as dogma, authority, cult, orthodoxy.

Opis:
The article presents the “do it yourself” (DIY) phenomenon which is popular in culture nowadays. It constitutes a distinctly noticeable sign of the return to craftwork based on manual work. The author treats this phenomenon as a modern continuation of old handicraft and craft traditions, while at the same time she notices its new functions and socio-cultural meanings. The author recalls historical contexts of the “do it yourself” philosophy in the culture of the West, as well as in native cultural traditions; she also presents current examples of activities of this kind, taken from websites and internet blogs. In the author’s view, the DIY phenomenon is situated in the circle of current trends of design, it is an expression of the criticism of consumerist society and is an ecological attitude towards the natural environment. It also remains strongly connected with the outlook of the involved people and social groups, as well as constituting evidence of people’s creative involvement in their relations with the material world.

Tekst jest próbą analizy fenomenu podwójnego albumu jako znaczącego formatu LP i CD w muzyce rockowej. Rozpoczyna się definicją podwójnego albumu i krótkim omówieniem głównych powodów jego pojawienia się w przemyśle muzycznym. Następnie zawiera przegląd głównych typów podwójnego albumu. Można wyróżnić cztery specyficzne rodzaje tego formatu: podwójny album komplementarny, koncepcyjny album dwupłytowy, podwójny album koncertowy oraz przekrojowy album kompilacyjny. Oprócz tych szeroko rozpowszechnionych typów istnieje również kilka interesujących podkategorii. Najczęstszymi pokrewnymi formami są tak zwane albumy towarzyszące, które w jakiś sposób są powiązane z głównym albumem, ale zostały wydane oddzielnie (czasami w tym samym czasie). Autor koncentruje się na motywach powstania podwójnego albumu i krytycznie omawia jego niektóre elementy jako tekstu kulturowego. Najtrudniejszy element w tworzeniu podwójnego albumu to oczywiście muzyczna i tekstowa realizacja jego koncepcji, ale są też problemy z występami na żywo wydanymi na klasycznych podwójnych albumach. Ostatnia część tekstu odpowiada na pytania o obecny status i uzasadnienie istnienia podwójnych albumów w epoce zdominowanej przez cyfrowe formaty audio i streaming.
This text analyses the phenomenon of the double album as a significant LP and CD format in rock music. It commences with a definition of the double set and a brief discussion of the main reasons for its use in the music industry. The paper provides an overview of the principal types of the double album: double complementary album, double concept album, double live set and double compilation. In addition to these four most popular categories, there are also several interesting subtypes of this format. The most common are companion pieces – albums associated with and complementing each other even though packaged and released separately (sometimes at the same time). The author also focuses on the motives behind the formation of a double album, offering a brief critical discussion of certain shortcomings of this cultural text. Naturally, the greatest challenge in the making of a double album is to express its concept through music and lyrics; however, certain problems may also be identified in the case of live performances released on classic double sets. The final section addresses the questions of the present status of the double album and the rationale for its existence in an age dominated by digital audio formats and streaming.

Artykuł przedstawia w zarysie wkład benedyktynów w rozwój chrześcijaństwa w ciągu jego pierwszych wieków w Polsce. Przedstawienie to uwzględnia cztery aspekty aktywności benedyktyńskiej: historyczną, duchową, kulturalną i ekologiczną, przy czym ta ostatnia rozumiana jest w sposób integralny, tj. obejmujący ekonomię i zarządzanie. Ponadto przedstawiona została także szersza panorama współczesnych aktywności klasztorów benedyktyńskich w Europie, która pozwala ukazać, że intensywniejsze zwrócenie się ku tradycji benedyktyńskiej mogłoby ewentualnie pomóc w rozwiązaniu niektórych problemów stojących obecnie przed Kościołem w Polsce.
The article presents an outline of the contribution of Benedictine monks into the development of Christianity in its first centuries in Poland. Four aspects are taken into consideration: historical, spiritual, cultural and ecological, the latter understood in an integral way, i.e., including economy and administration. Moreover, a wider panorama of the contemporary activities of the Benedictine monasteries in Europe is also outlined in order to show how a more intense turning towards the Benedictine tradition might be helpful in resolving some problems now faced by the Church in Poland.

The aim of this paper is to provide basic information on the main components of book culture in Slovakia in the first decades of the 21st century. The article starts with a brief overview of the existing volumes on the topic of contemporary book culture in Slovakia. In core, the paper analyses state support for book publishing, structure of publishers, book market, reading, libraries and book awards. Empirical data comes from available official documents and statistics.
Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie podstawowych informacji na temat głównych komponentów kultury książki na Słowacji w pierwszych dekadach XXI wieku oraz stanu, w jakim się znajdują. Artykuł zaczyna się od krótkiego przeglądu literatura przedmiotu, następnie ukazana została rola państwa, które wspiera liczne inicjatywy wydawnicze, ruch wydawniczy, rynek książki, czytelnictwo, biblioteki i nagrody związane z książką i literaturą. Dane pochodzą z dostępnych oficjalnych dokumentów i statystyk.

The article is a reflection on the symbols through which the modern experience of cultural belonging is expressed and on the motivations behind their contestation. Examples of selected themes that Marcin Świetlicki and Barbara Gruszka-Zych explore in their writing are used to examine the poetic quest to overcome feelings of alienation in one’s own cultural milieu. In spite of the differences between the two poets, both address the problems facing the contemporary consciousness of Western man, split between the desire to complete the process of deconstructing his own universal “identifying signs” and the need to creatively explore the process of symbolization itself. The issue of “internal acculturation,” as a particular case within the topic of acculturation as a whole, is also correlated to examples drawn from Francophone poetry.

With advancement of modern medical technologies, attitudes of patients nowadays are forcefully being transformed. While we think that these advanced and reliable technologies bring us some reasonable hope, there are uncertainties that patients are coerced to bear. Taking the COVID-19 pandemic as an example, patients are subject to many uncertainties caused by some overestimation of positive effects, ongoing clinical results, and so forth. Then, not only do the patients suffer non-voluntarily but they also face new challenges caused by the uncertainties. They are forced to transform their attitudes by reflecting on their experiences. By referring to the argument of Havi Carel and Ian James Kidd, namely, suffering experiences are more transformative, I comment on it and specifically describe the patients’ coercive transformation. Finally, I suggest how the concept of clarifying what is up-to-us or not helps the patients to identify their desires and change their attitudes.
Mit der Entwicklung moderner medizinischer Technologien unterliegen die Haltungen der Patienten starken Veränderungen. Obwohl es uns scheint, dass diese fortschrittlichen und bewährten Technologien uns eine legitime Hoffnung geben, gibt es Unbekannte, die Patienten ertragen müssen. Wenn wir die COVID-19-Pandemie als Beispiel nehmen, sind Patienten vielen Unbekannten ausgesetzt, die durch Überschätzung der positiven Ergebnisse aktueller klinischer Studien usw. verursacht werden. In einer solchen Situation leiden Patienten nicht nur nicht aus eigenem Willen, sondern stehen auch vor neuen Herausforderungen, die durch Unsicherheit verursacht werden. Sie müssen ihre eigenen Einstellungen ändern, indem sie über ihre Erfahrungen nachdenken. Unter Bezugnahme auf das Argument von Havi Carel und Ian James Kidd, dass die Erfahrung des Leidens transformativer ist, kommentiere ich dieses Argument und beschreibe detailliert die erzwungene Transformation von Patienten. Schließlich weise ich darauf hin, wie das Konzept der Erklärung, was von uns abhängt und was nicht, den Patienten hilft, ihre Wünsche zu bestimmen und Einstellungen zu ändern.
Wraz z rozwojem nowoczesnych technologii medycznych postawy pacjentów ulegają obecnie silnym przemianom. Choć wydaje nam się, że te zaawansowane i sprawdzające się technologie przynoszą nam pewną słuszną nadzieję, to jednak istnieją niewiadome, które pacjenci muszą znosić. Jeżeli za przykład weźmiemy pandemię COVID-19, to pacjenci są poddawani wielu niewiadomym spowodowanym przecenianiem pozytywnych rezultatów bieżących ba-dań klinicznych itp. W takiej sytuacji pacjenci nie tylko że cierpią nie z własnej woli, ale też stają przed nowymi wyzwaniami wywoływanymi przez niepewność. Musza zmieniać własne postawy poprzez refleksję nad swoimi doświadczeniami. Odwołując się do argumentu Havi Carel i Iana Jamesa Kidda, zgodnie z którym doświadczenia związane z cierpieniem są bardziej transformujące, komentuję ten argument i szczegółowo opisuję wymuszoną transformację pacjentów. Opis:
Contemporary Polish book culture is the sum of the historical experience of the Polish state and nation, whose fate was varied and often dramatic over the last thousand years. The dynamics of development in times of war and enslavement were marked by slowdowns. The Poles suffered immense population and material losses. Readership, for a long time, was reserved for the upper layers of the society. The peasants were not generally included in the area of literacy until the mid-twentieth century, the consequences of which are visible to this day. The contemporary Polish book culture is firmly rooted in tradition, however, it is subject to far-reaching transformations and modifications related to the technological and social changes taking place in Poland and worldwide, that overlapped in the transition period. After 1989, the rebuilt free publishing and bookselling market, after the turbulent period of structural transformation, is now relatively orderly and functions efficiently.
Współczesna polska kultura książki jest sumą doświadczeń historycznych państwa i narodu, które w przeciągu minionego tysiąclecia przechodziły rozmaite, często dramatyczne koleje losu. Dynamika rozwoju w kolejnych okresach była zróżnicowana, w czasach wojen i niewoli następowało spowolnienie, ponosiliśmy dotkliwe straty ludzkie i materialne. Czytelnictwo przez długi czas ograniczone było do warstw wyższych, wszyscy chłopi znaleźli się w obszarze piśmienności dopiero w połowie XX wieku, czego konsekwencje są widoczne po dziś dzień. Współczesna kultura książki polskiej mocno osadzona w tradycji, ulega jednak ciągle daleko idącym przekształceniom i modyfikacjom, związanym z zachodzącymi w Polsce i na świecie zmianami społecznymi i technologicznymi, które nałożyły się na siebie w okresie transformacji ustrojowej. Odtworzony po 1989 roku wolny rynek wydawniczy i księgarski przeszedł okres dynamiczbnych przekształceń strukturalnych, obecnie jest już względnie uporządkowany i sprawnie funkcjonuje.
