Opis:
This study examines the issue of student essay writing in higher education. The main focus of this research is on the lecturers and writing tutors who wish to help undergraduates in learning foreign languages as well as to enable them to bring improvement in their essay writing skills. Essay writing is critical to academic success; usually, an essay is a piece of writing that systematically analyzes and evaluates a topic or issue. Mind mapping is one of the versatile tools that help to break down the topics into manageable chunks, fire up the brain, and boost creativity. This study focuses on how mind mapping was effectively used as a strategy to support and develop students’ writing skills. The data required for this study was collected through a questionnaire and analyzed with the primary purpose to evaluate the use of mind maps as a pre-writing brainstorming strategy. The statistical techniques used to determine the role of mind mapping in the enhancement of writing skills include one-way ANOVA, Chi-Square test, and Correlation Analysis. The findings of the statistical analysis confirmed that planning an essay before writing with the use of the mind mapping technique helped in writing essays more effectively in their coursework, thereby making essay writing more enjoyable and fun.

Opis:
This study aimed to investigate the effect of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) as compared to paper-based instruction in the development of Iranian EFL elementary learners’ writing skills. The research purpose was threefold: 1) to investigate the effect of MALL on elementary learners’ writing skills; 2) to make a comparison between the obtained results of MALL and pencil-and-paper methods, and 3) to assess elementary students’ attitudes about learner involvement in collaborative learning (CL) settings through mobile phone (MPh) interactions. For this purpose, 30 Iranian EFL elementary students were selected and randomly assigned to two groups: one experimental and one control. While the experimental sample received mobile-based instructions on their writing assignments, the students in the placebo group were provided with only paper-based instruction. The findings revealed that the participants in both groups showed considerable improvement on the immediate and delayed writing post-tests; however, on average, those in the experimental MALL group were shown to have outperformed the students in the control group significantly. Not surprisingly, the learners in the treatment group had made fewer errors on the targeted grammatical structures like the use of adjectives, possessives and simple present tense compared to those in the control sample. Finally, the results of the post hoc interview reflected that MALL learners felt positively about the utility of mobile technology in writing classes. Essentially, the findings could be of great help to EFL teachers, EFL learners, and course designers.

Acquiring writing skills requires an entire academic lifetime but acceptable levels of proficiency should be covered in compulsory education. This research verifies the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels of writing skills in the Spanish education system. It compares both the development of knowledge and the associated difficulties in interviews with 40 students from the even years of primary and secondary education. Descriptive and correlational analyses were made, after coding their statements according to the theoretical model used. They revealed an unexpected stagnation, depending on the levels, with important educational implications.

Opis:
This study reports the results of a mixed-methods approach to investigate the impact of peer online learner-driven feedback (LDF) using Google Docs and peer-editing in a face-to-face classroom on EFL learners’ writing skill. As this study was conducted using a quasi-experimental design, two intact groups, each including twenty EFL learners, were selected as the participants of the study. They were attending an IELTS preparation course at a language school in Iran. To assess the learners’ IELTS academic writing skills, we used academic writing task 1 and task 2 and conducted semi-structured interviews to explore the learners’ perceptions towards the impact of online learner-driven peer-editing on writing tasks. An independent-samples t-test, along with two one-way MANCOVA, was used to analyse the quantitative data. The results showed that LDF-based peer-editing significantly enhanced the learners’ academic writing skills, compared to the conventional in-class feedback. The thematic analysis used to analyse the qualitative data shed light on the learners’ positive perceptions towards the effect of online learner-driven peer-editing on academic writing skills.

Opis:
This study aimed at examining the effects of corpus-based instructional mediation on EFL learners’ academic writing skills improvement. To conduct the research, a quasi-experimental research design was employed. A total of 72 EFL mechanical engineering students participated in the study, and they were selected through a simple random sampling technique.  Among them, 25 students were assigned to the experimental group and 47 students to the control group. The data were gathered by means of pre- and post-tests. Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was used to observe the statistical differences between the control and the experimental groups in their academic writing skills. The results showed that the students who were instructed through corpus-based instructional mediation outperformed than the students who were instructed in the conventional instructional approach. Particularly, the students who participated in the experimental group improved their content, communicative achievement, organization, grammar, and vocabulary usage than the students who participated in the control group. Therefore, this research calls for inclusion of corpus-based authentic linguistic elements in their teaching material when teaching academic writing courses in the EFL context.

Opis:
Feedback is a crucial element of the learning and teaching cycle. Constructive feedback is central to high school students’ learning. However, the effectiveness and efficiency of feedback provided through new technologies are relatively under-researched. Some examples of innovative approaches to delivering feedback to EFL learners include individualized audio-visual feedback using screencasting technology and feedback interviews with internet communication tools, such as messaging apps and social media platforms. This study examines how individual feedback provided via different modalities influences the learners’ writing skills. It also offers insight into whether learners wish to be decide on the type of feedback they receive on formative assignments during their writing training. Students’ writing samples were analyzed and student survey data was used to interpret the students’ perceptions. Overall, the students had a positive attitude toward using different technology-based tools to provide and receive feedback. Our findings suggest that the majority of students benefit from feedback given with the use of certain modalities. The results indicate that technology could be integrated into teaching practices to support students’ writing, engage them in writing tasks, and improve interactions between learners and feedback givers.

Opis:
This article discusses the role of metacognitive reflection and the systematic practice of writing in shaping the ability to create texts in a foreign language. Starting with the presentation of selected opinions and research on the unsatisfactory level of student writing, the author attempts to verify the hypothesis of the positive influence of metacognitive reflection, as well as the practice of systematic writing, including the freewriting method, on the development of writing skills. The author tried to verify this hypothesis during his classes at the University of Warsaw. For one semester a group of students participated in systematic writing, practiced self-reflection on their writing, and evaluated the results of their work. This quasi-experiment showed a certain improvement in the students’ writing skills and ability to self-correct their texts. However, it is difficult to assess to what extent these individual factors, i.e. self-reflection and systematic writing, have contributed to the improvement of students’ writing skills. Therefore, the hypothesis about the positive influence of self-reflection and systematic writing on enhancing writing skills requires further in-depth research.

Opis:
The main concern of this study was to investigate the effects of integrated reading and writing skills instruction on EFL learners' critical thinking skills achievement at Bahir Dar University. At this point, a quasi-experimental research design was employed, and 96 English majoring students as experimental (n = 48) and control (n = 48) groups participated in the study with a random assignment. Herein, the experimental group was instructed through integrated reading and writing skills instruction and the control group with the conventional method for consecutive 12 weeks, and then, 25 (twenty-five) pre and post-tests of critical thinking questions were employed to assess students’ achievement. Data were collected through tests, and then the Kappa inter-rater reliability and split-half tests were employed to compute the reliability and internal consistency of both tests respectively. Finally, the data were analyzed using an independent t-test, and then the result of the pre-test revealed that both experimental and control groups were homogenous in critical thinking skills’ achievement. However, after the treatment, the post-test results depicted that the experimental group significantly outscored the control group. In a nutshell, the study showed the supremacy of integrated reading and writing skills instruction over the conventional approach in enhancing students’ critical thinking skills achievement.

Opis:
Aim. In academic writing, lack of coherence is thought to occur mostly due to the lack of necessary linguistic skills and knowledge in L2. Thus, the analysis of a written text is concerned with understanding the local relations among the ideas conveyed in a text. Concept. As is usually the case, students writing in a second language generally produce texts that contain varying degrees of grammatical and rhetorical errors. Most of the studies have been conducted with only one criterion for the analysis of coherence and they reported different results. Also, most of them have been conducted on a small scale in terms of the number of participants, and writing samples collected. Therefore, this study tries to investigate the coherence problems/errors of university students in their writing, if any, on a fairly large scale in light of the Cooperative principle and its maxims. Results and conclusion. The study revealed that the basic problem of the students in their essay writing was the way the text should be structured with reference to how cohesion and coherence are established. In the analysis of maxim violations, the violation of the Quality maxim was identified as making overgeneralisations or giving inadequate or no evidence/support for the claims/ideas. The violation of the Quality maxim indicates that students tend to do it due to their linguistic inadequacies.

Opis:
The teaching of foreign languages and the use of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) methodology is hugely popular in Spain nowadays. Many families are interested in this type of academic training because they are convinced the academic results are positive, but the question is whether it is in fact the case that foreign language level increases. The aim of this study was to analyse the different level of English writing skills of 4th grade students from both compulsory bilingual and non-bilingual secondary schools in Castilla-La Mancha (Spain). From the results of the study, we were able to examine whether bilingual programs help students improve their English writing skills as well as to compare the results obtained by bilingual schools in Castilla-La Mancha with those developed in other Spanish, or even European, regions.
