In this article we defined the aim of bringing closer Daniil Andreyev's personality which refers to the statements of the writer's self-identification. In conclusion, Andreyev is a mystical writer who thought about himself as a messenger, visionary, dualist, poet-magician and words seeker. Moreover, Andreyev considered himself  as a creator who does not invent things, but only in the language of poetry describes the otherworldly. The mystical was not only present in his works, but also amounted to  a component of his personality. Its foundations were reconstructed on a deep Orthodox faith influenced by the philosophy of Vladimir Solovyov, the poetry of Alexander Blok, the visions of Alexander Kovalensky as well as his individual mystical experience.

The long awaited publication of Madeline G. Levine’s retranslation of Schulz’s fiction has sparked new interest in the reception of Schulz in English-speaking countries. In Poland, the general view seems to be that the author has not received the attention he deserves. Based largely on a review non-specialized periodicals from 1963–2018, the paper presents a strong and lasting trend in the reception of the English Schulz, namely the admiration of hosts of fellow authors: writers of high-brow and popular fiction, poets and playwrights from the whole anglophone world, form Australia to Canada. Examining their reviews of Schulz’s stories, interviews and articles promoting their own work, and intertextual references to Schulz which some of them employed, the paper adds some a new names to the small handful of Schulz-loving anglophone authors of whom Polish scholars have been aware so far.

The paper discusses the underresearched issue of the artistic anthropology of a “second-class” writer as a typological phenomenon, i.e. one which possesses semiotic characteristics independent of particular historical circumstances. Taking as examples Faddei Bulgarin, Mikhail Voskresensky, Alexander Yakhontov and others, the author shows that what they have in common is the kind of artistic reflection, typical of “second-class” writers. This reflection encompasses the following: defining their own place “on the Parnassus” as compared with the classics, interpreting the well-known verbal clichés and the way they construct their image as authors, taking into account certain literary benchmarks. The author of the paper reflects on the ambiguous nature of imitation and on its consequences, which might include an unjustified treatment of the “secondary” cultural phenomena as mere talentless epigonism. The author concludes by defining the position of the “second-class” writers as vulnerable, regardless if they aspire to a high status in the literary hierarchy or just assume the modest role of stewards of the cultural heritage and faithful satellites of the writers perceived as the coryphaei.
В статье рассматривается малоисследованный вопрос о художественной антропологии литератора «второго ряда» как явления типологического, обладающего семиотическими признаками, не зависящими от конкретного исторического времени. На примерах Ф. В. Булгарина, М. И. Воскресенского, А. Н. Яхонтова и других показано, что их сходство обусловлено свойственным «второстепенным писателям» общим характером литературно-творческой рефлексии. В основании ее лежат определение места таких писателей «на Парнасе» в соотношении с классиками; интерпретация ими признанных словесных образчиков; подход к формированию собственного писательского образа с учетом преломления в нем избранных литературных ориентиров. Развивается мысль о неоднозначной природе подражательства и его следствиях, которые могут состоять в неправомерной трактовке культуры «второстепенного» как бездарного эпигонства. Делается вывод об уязвимом положении писателей «второго ряда» вне зависимости от того, претендуют ли они на высокий статус в литературной иерархии или признают за собой роль скромных «проводников» культурного наследия и неизменных верных «спутников» писателей-«корифеев».

The article presents the political profile of the German writer and Nobel prize winner, Günter Grass, and the singular nature of his involvement in German political life. Grass’s views, albeit internally inconsistent, had been comprehensible until the Unification of Germany, while his political activity strove do defend such values as liberty, democracy and moderation. After the unification, of which he had been an adversary, Grass began to speak in ever more controversial tones, and his views seem to clash more and more profoundly with what he had formerly advocated.

Bruno Schulz has been one of the most important Polish philosophers. It is not because one can find in his works many traces of reading philosophy or that they convey any specific philosophical ideas, but because the form of his world is one of the most interesting world forms found in Polish in the 20th century. What is the meaning of this form? Our life tends to assume fixed shapes whose durability denies it since there is a radical assymetry between the matter of life and the forms it adopts. We need these forms to deny formless chaos but we should not accept them as ultimate. Our nature knows no peace but adopts many disguises and roles to find the best possible shelter, which never ends with success. Human life is permanently incomplete because it always shows us its “eternal otherness.” Never will we realize our potential in full, which does not mean that we should limit ourselves in advance. On the contrary – the more options we have, the better our life is. If reality is a sum of realized potentialities, the more of them become real, the more meaning reality will acquire. And the more meaning it has, the more effort must be put in its interpretation. Thus human existence can be defined as interpreting. Interpretation adds more possibilities to being since it is not a way of knowing the world, but that of being in it.

The essay is an analysis of the most important, yet actually quite sporadic artistic adventure of Schulz, which was fiction writing. The question discussed is apparently paradoxical: was Bruno Schulz a writer? The author argues that there is a difference between a writer and a man of letters, i.e. someone who is a professional in the literary field. Schulz never became the latter and this is what makes his biography significantly different from those of the typical literati among whom he had many friends. In comparison to them, Schulz wrote very little, started writing quite late, and the period when he really was a writer lasted only several years. One might say that writing fiction indeed rather happened to him – it was not a permanent disposition of his artistic existence. That had crucial consequences for the form of his writing.

Koncepcja badania tworzywa językowego tekstów literatury przy utrzymywaniu w procesie badawczym stałej relacji w obrębie triady: pisarz – tworzywo językowe – tekst oraz pisarz – tekst – badacz. Dominantą jest postrzeganie pisarza nie tylko jako autora i kreatora tekstu, nadawcę komunikatu, twórcę oryginalnego warsztatu pisarskiego, ale również jako jednostkę ludzką, egzystującą w określonym czasie i miejscu/miejscach, osobowość o konkretnej tożsamości, obdarzoną swoistymi właściwościami, posiadającą sobie właściwe: wiedzę, doświadczenia, upodobania, poglądy, preferencje i emocje. Pisarz jest twórcą tekstu a badacz powinien uszanować jego prawa autorskie, ale jednocześnie jak najlepiej ukazać wszystko to, co pisarz zawał w swoim tekście.
The concept of researching linguistic material of literary texts while in the research process maintaining the constant relation within the triad of ‘writer – linguistic material – text’ and the one of ‘writer – text – researcher’. The dominant element is perceiving the writer not only as the author and creator of the text, the sender of the message, and the creator of an original literary workshop, but also as a human being existing at a specific time and place/places, a personality with a specific identity, with specific features and characteristics such as a certain level of knowledge, experience, preferences, views and emotions. The writer is the creator of the text and the researcher should respect his or her copyrights, but – at the same time – should present everything the writer has included in his or her text in the best possible way.

Literary work by Chłędowska, who was also an interesting literary critic, including 16 short stories, has never been highly valued by reviewers, and in the 20th century was dismissively depreciated as a kind of ‘salon-fashion’ literature. It is possible however, after a thorough examination of her well done pieces, to prove their thematic, genre as well as narrative qualities. These include, to name a few, genre syncretism, engaging narrative constructions, ironical-humorous distance which balances more traditional and sentimental predilections, or the skeptical presentation of tragicomic aspects of human existence. Both aesthetic and philosophical orientations of these short stories allow to place Chłędowska’s literary works in the context of Biedermeier tradition.

The article presents the profile of Zdzisław Dębicki, one of the less known Polish writers of Modernism and the early interwar period. The author outlines the state of research on the writer’s diverse literary output and, on the basis of few available sources, attempts to reconstruct Dębicki’s biography that is closely related to the contemporary history of his homeland. Summarizing and quoting the artist’s most important works, the author of this article characterizes the poet, diarist and literary critic as a representative of artistic circles of the late 19th-century Lviv and the early 20th-century Warsaw. The aim of this article is to introduce Dębicki’s writing as worth noticing and popularizing; writing that does not deserve its simplified reputation of being epigonic or worthless.

This article discusses the role of the creative writer as the conscience of his society using Festus Iyayi as an exam-ple. The study focuses on the themes and narrative technique of Iyayi's Heroes to present the author as a literary artist who exposes the corruption and other forms of social evil perpetrated against the common man and the soci-ety generally. Studies show that Iyayi’s Heroes is one of the literary works written on the Nigerian civil war fought between 1967 and 1970. Iyayi’s novel, however, is said to be different from other literary works on the war on account of its neutral perspective on the crisis. This is what informs the choice of the novel for this study. In the novel, Iyayi projects himself as the conscience of society highlighting the deceit, corruption, class-consciousness, insensitivity and avarice to which the common man and the society are subjected by the ruling class using the façade of fighting a civil war. The outcome of this study establishes Iyayi as a conscientious patriot who uses the genre of the novel to highlight the wrongs of Nigerian society with a prescription for social reform. W artykule omówiono rolę pisarza jako sumienia społeczeństwa na przykładzie Festus Iyayi. Badanie koncentruje się na tematach i technice narracyjnej Heroes Iyayi, aby przedstawić autora jako twórcę literackiego, który obnaża korupcję i inne formy zła społecznego popełniane wobec zwykłego człowieka. Badania pokazują, że Heroes Iyayi to jedno z dzieł literackich napisanych na temat Nigeryjskiej wojny domowej toczonej w latach 1967–70. Mówi się jednak, że powieść Iyayi różni się od innych dzieł literackich o wojnie ze względu na neutralną perspektywę kryzysu. To właśnie zdecydowało o wyborze powieści do niniejszego artykułu. W powieści Iyayi projektuje siebie jako sumienie społeczeństwa, podkreślając oszustwo, korupcję, świadomość klasową, nieczułość i chciwość. Zwykły człowiek i społeczeństwo są podporządkowane klasie rządzącej za pomocą fasady toczącej wojnę domową. Wynik tego badania ustanawia Iyayi jako sumiennego patriotę, który wykorzystuje gatunek powieści do uwypuklenia krzywd społeczeństwa nigeryjskiego. Our purpose in this paper is to show how the output of academic student-writers demonstrates the different ways in which they react to the discipline’s discoursal demands and how that, in turn, forms their writer identity. We also argue that the current Second Language Acquisition (SLA) theory fails to adequately integrate notions of second language (L2) academic writer identity and the social contexts in which L2 writers produce their texts.
Naszym celem w tym artykule jest pokazanie, w jaki sposób twórczość studentów akademickich wskazuje na różne sposoby reagowania wobec dyskursywnych wymagań danej dyscypliny i jaki, z kolei, ma to wpływ na formownie się pisarskiej tożsamości studentów. Twierdzimy również, że obecna teoria nabywania drugiego języka (SLA) nie jest w stanie skontaminować pojęcia tożsamości autora akademickiego piszącego w drugim języku z kontekstami społecznymi, w których te teksty powstają.

Durant la Belle Époque, le roman de l’écrivain supplante progressivement le roman du peintre et se constitue en un filon qui donne lieu à une interrogation sur le rôle de l'homme de lettres dans la société bourgeoise et sur les causes de son désarroi. L’auteur véhicule ainsi à travers son œuvre un portrait axiologique de soi qui, renvoyant implicitement à la difficulté de la création, rend compte des valeurs qui façonnent la fin de siècle. La modélisation qui en découle intègre la caricature, devenue omniprésente au XIXe siècle, non seulement pour la charge parodique qui la caractérise, mais pour le pouvoir désormais accepté que l’exagération, la déformation et la blague détiennent dans l’interprétation du réel. De Huysmans à Gide, de Lorrain à Gourmont, de Dumur à Mauclair, Mirbeau ou Céard, le roman de l’écrivain fait de la caricature et de la dévaluation la garantie de l’authenticité de la projection autofictive.
During the Belle Époque, the writer’s novel gradually replaces the painter’s novel and forms a platform for asking questions about the role of the author in bourgeois society and the causes of their distress. Through this work, the author thus conveys an axiological portrait of himself which, implicitly referring to the difficulty of creation, gives an account of the values shaping the end of the century. The resulting modelling incorporates caricature, which becomes omnipresent in the 19th century, not only for the parodical load that characterises it, but for the accepted power that exaggeration, distortion and joke hold in the interpretation of reality. From Huysmans to Gide, from Lorrain to Gourmont, from Dumur to Mauclair, Mirbeau or Céard, the writer’s novel makes caricature and the devaluation a guarantee of the authenticity of the fictional self-projection.

The man lives in the culture built by him, which also includes stereotypes both created and used by the writer, belonging to the structure of the composition the stereotypes reference convention, scheme, model and cliché. They are forms of consciousness and as such they do not make a category in poetics, becoming closer to the rhetoric embodied by different shapes of thoughts. At the same time they are not shapes of thoughts, but rather forms of consciousness. Stereotypes are terms and phenomena on the border of humanities, such as myth or topos. They exist in the area of all culture. The community sanctions their presence, both positive and negative.

Custodial pedagogy is a young branch of knowledge, which was distinguished from social pedagogy in the interwar period. This branch has to meet some methodological difficulties but is grounded on a time-honoured practice of custodial and caring activity conducted by outstanding pedagogues. One of the precursors of custodial pedagogy was Stanisław Jachowicz (1796-1857). Is activity bore a caring, formative and didactic character. He was a renown private tutor of the Polish language. He understood his tasks which was as follows: promoting morality by teaching, and the foundation of morality was faith and God-fearing. Stanisław Jachowicz became one of the most outstanding writers for children. He write ca 800 works, many of which were brought out in dozens of editions, and some have cherished popularity up to this day. With his writing he sought to form young generation of Poles in the spirit of the love of God, homeland and the neighbour. He is the first to have created fable at the service of pedagogy directed to children, a fable which teaches, forms and educates. It was also his innovatory venture to apply songs as a formative method. He contributed immensely to the development of periodical press; he edited his own periodical "Dziennik dla Dzieci" (Daily for Children). The paper entailed a lot of information on science, politics, culture, everyday life and entertainment; all this was written in a manner comprehensible for young readers. Stanisław Jachowicz was an indefatigable and deeply committed custodian. He organized the Institute for Morally Forsaken Children in which he took care about children morally degraded and orphans. He ensured them a living, custody, and established "a little school for orphans" in which children learned elementary things and gained some profession supervised by experienced craftsmen. Stanisław Jachowicz was well aware of the significance of pedagogical measures taken by the Institute; he cared about financial security of his undertakings. He manifested an extraordinary, or even surprising, ingenuity in thinking up various forms of stimulating society to generosity or taking advantage of human curiosity. He belong to the group initiating the Care for Little Children, a centre patterned according to the most progressive formative ideas of Swoboda and Frobel. Day-nurseries provided care for the children whose parents worked, formed their minds and hearts through play. The life of Stanisław Jachowicz was marked with special activity in many divisions of social life. He was an outstanding pedagogue, great fable writer and committed philanthropist. While serving Polish society, he sought ever new, better forms of aid and new ways of formative influence adjusted to the political, economical, and social conditions.

The image of the writer plays an important role in the publicist works of Ivan Bunin in 1920. It is the image of the author struggling against the Bolsheviks, and the image of those writers who helped the Bolsheviks propaganda as well as “new Soviet writers”. In 1920 Bunin as the most signif-icant writer of the Russian Diaspora focuses on the most famous writer among those who, according to Bunin, supports the Bolsheviks – Maxim Gorky. Bunin also pays close attention to the contro-versy with H.G. Wells: this is due to the role that the English writer played in the context of Soviet Russia. Bunin’s works in 1920 are written as a reaction of the Russian writer to the various texts published in the press, and the discussion with the works of his main opponents – Gorky and Wells.

Background: Focal hand dystonia is a movement disorder that manifests itself as uncontrollable, repeatable postures assumed by the affected hand while performing a specific task. Specifically, writer’s cramp is characterised by involuntary muscle contractions in the hand, wrist and elbow, which can result in an excessive force or in the extension of one or more fingers while holding a pen. Thus, writer’s cramp prevents a person from undertaking constant, long-term writing by hand. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a 4-week therapy in patients with focal hand dystonia (writer’s cramp). Methods: One woman aged 33 underwent a 4-week course of therapy. Before the first, and after the last session, the patient was evaluated with objective diagnostic methods and functional tests of the upper extremities. Results: a slight improvement in hand functioning while handwriting was noted following the therapy. Conclusions: Introducing new methods in therapy, extending the experimental group, and creating scales that are specific for writer’s cramp may help to establish an effective treatment.
Wprowadzenie: Dystonia zadaniowa jest zaburzeniem ruchu, które objawia się u chorych niekontrolowanym, powtarzalnym przyjmowaniem postawy części ciała zajętej dystonicznie podczas konkretnych czynności. Kurcz pisarski jest rodzajem dystonii zadaniowej. Charakteryzuje się skurczami mięśni w obrębie przedramienia, co skutkuje nadmiernym wkładaniem siły w uchwyt na przyborze do pisania lub prostowaniem palców. W wyniku kurczu pisarskiego osoby z nim zdiagnozowane nie są w stanie w sposób ciągły i długotrwały podejmować czynności pisania. Cel: Ocena skuteczności czterotygodniowej terapii zastosowanej u pacjentki z dystonią zadaniową (kurczem pisarskim). Materiał i metody: Kobietę w wieku 33 lat poddano czterotygodniowemu programowi fizjoterapii. Przed rozpoczęciem programu terapeutycznego i po jego zakończeniu oceniono pacjentkę za pomocą obiektywnych metod diagnostycznych oraz testów funkcjonalnych dla kończyny górnej. Wyniki: Zaplanowana czterotygodniowa terapia nieznacznie wpłynęła na poprawę funkcji ręki w trakcie pisania. Wnioski: Przeprowadzone badania nie pozwoliły na opracowanie skutecznej formy terapii. Jednakże aktualne doniesienia naukowe ukazują rodzaje terapii dające szanse na utworzenie efektywnego programu fizjoterapii. Często podkreślana jest też waga kontynuacji badań, poszerzania grup badawczych oraz utworzenie szczegółowych skal oceny dla dystonii zadaniowej.

In his essay ”The Writer as a Reader” Ricardo Piglia examines the effects of Witold Gombrowicz's stay in Buenos Aires in the years 1939-1963 on the culture of Ar- gentine. At the beginning, he discusses the implications ”Against Poets” and the translation of Ferdydurke for the Spanish language. He also addresses the issue of development of the literary canon, the so-called ”economics of literary value” and considers Gombrowicz's work in terms of his exile and exclusion. Finally, he consid- ers Gombrowicz’s Diary as a laboratory of the writer’s oeuvre.
W eseju „Pisarz jako czytelnik” Ricardo Piglia analizuje skutki, jakie wywarł pobyt Witolda Gombrowicza w Buenos Aires w latach 1939-1963 na szeroko pojętą kulturę argentyńską. Na początku, omawia implikacje, jakie dla miało języka hiszpańskiego wystąpienie „Przeciw poetom” oraz tłumaczenie Ferdydurke. Podejmuje także kwestię kształtowania się kanonu literackiego, tzw. „ekonomii wartości literackiej” oraz rozważa dzieło Gombrowicza w kategoriach wygnania i wykluczenia. Na końcu, rozważa temat Dziennika jako laboratorium twórczości pisarza.

Paul Willems, Flemish writer and playwright, who wrote in French, can be considered along with Suzanne Lilar as one of the last Belgian writers in national understanding of this word. This paper is a proposal of analysis of the last prose writing of Willems Le Pays noyé. As this work can be read as an allegory of Belgian history, attention is drawn to the problem of Belgian identity and its formation process. Moreover the final remarks deal with the attitude of Willems to French language, reflected in his different dramatic writings.

The article stems from a media linguistic perspective and serves as a case study for comparing the roles of a journalist and a writer. The author chose a textual experiment for that purpose, namely the 23–24 April 2016 edition of Gazeta Wyborcza, a Polish daily. On that day the paper turned into Writers’ Newspaper and was prepared in full by several dozen writers from Poland and abroad. The project’s aim was to promote reading the press and literature. The author analysed metatextual and paratextual elements along with self-commentaries regarding the project. The results show the experiment indicated the communicative specificity of the journalistic profession: the particularities of the editorial office, the importance of the topic, of character limits and fact-checking. As a communication experiment, the newspaper underlined the interactive nature of the modern-day press and its openness to the reader.

The aim of my presentation would be to try to look on the critical and artistic achieve-ment of Stefan Kisielewski from the musical and literary perspectives. The ways of writ-ing about music, the musical and literary metaphors, and finally connections between musical and literary language are the key issues which occupy not only literary critics but also musicologists. In the context of Kisielewski's works they become especially inspir-ing. His Dzienniki prove that music and literature are two different areas of activity. Referring to chosen texts from the volumes: Muzyka i mózg, Z muzycznej międzyepoki, Z literackiego lamusa, I would like to think about the ways of writing about music and point the special features of the literary masterpiece, whose author is a writer, music critic, publicist and composer in one person..

The paper addresses the problem of the mourning cult of Bruno Schulz. The presented approach is critical of its excess in the Schulzean biographical discourses as well as literary and artistic references to his life and work, but it is by no means provocative like that of Janusz Rudnicki, who in the 1990s mocked the “hagiographic” idiom of Jerzy Ficowski. Analyzing archive records and testimonies, the author attempts to reconstruct the circumstances of Schulz’s death in possibly the minutest details. Comparing contradictory pieces of information with the official version made popular by Ficowski, he shows how profoundly it has been marked by the unperformed work of mourning over Schulz and the Holocaust – both the failed work of Ficowski himself and of his postwar correspondents whose letters determined the form of The Regions of Great Heresy. Using the idiom of thanatology and taking the role of a necrographer rather than that of a Schulz specialist, the author supposes that the dynamic of loss in the case of Schulz reaches far beyond the act of the writer’s execution on the street to include also the posthumous annihilation of his corpse and grave. This particular kind of necroviolence, perhaps the most hateful from the vantage point of the Jewish tradition and the heritage of Western culture in general, which consists in removing the material remains of the deceased has been called by Holocaust scholars “necrocide.” The absence of material traces and the “mourning objects” that usually help to cure the semiotic crisis which is death makes writers and artists commemorate Schulz with lyrical and artistic epitaphs. Their function is to restore the bodily identity of the dead person by creating his other body, told about and imagined in effigie, existing not beside but instead of the missing “mourning object.” However, the expansion of those elegiac narratives, particularly those produced outside Poland, often results in unintended reductionism. As a human being, writer, and artist, Schulz has been reduced in them to an emblem of the Holocaust, while such obituaries ignore the history of his archive. The other, historical and material body of the writer consists of his manuscripts, drawings, graphic works, and official documents. It exists, drawn and quartered, in archives, to be put up for auction for tens of thousands of dollars, exposed in museums and art galleries, and hoarded by collectors as precious relics.

In the first period of her career Urszula Czartoryska (1934–1998) dealt mainly with criticism. She predominantly focused on photography and its relations with other artistic phenomena, particularly from the borderline territory where artistic genres meet, covering also film and video. Two books summed up that stage in her writing career: Przygody plastyczne fotografii (1965) and Od pop-artu do sztuki konceptualnej (1973). Czartoryska’s professional domains extended in 1977 when she began work as the Head and Curator of the newly-established Department of Photography and Visual Techniques at the Museum of Art in Lodz, one of the first multimedia departments in world museology (photography, film, video, multimedia installations), forming part of the International Collection of Modern Art (opened to the public in 1931). The work for that institution did not imply only building the Department’s collection, but also involvement in the operations of the whole Museum, its display and publishing activity. It also impacted her writing activity in the sense that it extended to include research studies mainly on multi-motif inter- or interdisciplinary art. Apart from her work as a writer and museum curator, in 1978– 1993, Czartoryska also lectured: at the University of Lodz (1978–1986), Warsaw School of Photography (1985–1993), and at the State College of Fine Arts (today University of Fine Arts) in Poznan (1989–1993). Urszula Czartoryska represented the type of critic, museologist, and researcher opened to multiplicity of relations present in contemporary art, and drawing from numerous methods of its analysis and description.
