Opis:
Ten species of digeneans were found in a survey of six species of terrestrial birds associated with woodland and urban habitats of north-western Poland carried out in 2006–2009: Leucochloridium paradoxum Carus, 1835 (Leucochloridiidae) from the Cyanistes caeruleus (L.) and the Parus major L. (Paridae); Leuchochloridium perturbatum Pojmańska, 1968 (Leucochloridiidae) from the Turdus merula L., (Turdidae) and the Corvus monedula L. (Corvidae); Leucochloridium sp. (Leucochloridiidae Poche, 1907) from the Asio otus (L.) (Strigidae) and P. major; Strigea strigis (Schrank, 1788) (Strigeidae) from the A. otus; Morishitium elongatum (Harrach, 1921) (Cyclocoelidae) and Psilotornus confertus Machalska, 1974 (Psilostomidae) and Leyogonimus postgonoporos (Neiland, 1951) and Lutztrema attenuatum (Dujardin, 1845) (Dicrocoeliidae) from the T. merula; Plagiorchis maculosus (Rudolphi, 1802) (Plagiorchiidae) from the C. caeruleus; Prosthogonimus ovatus (Rudolphi, 1803) (Prosthogonimidae) from the Dendrocopos major (Linnaeus) (Picidae); Zonorchis petiolatus (Railliet, 1900) (Dicrocoeliidae) from the T. merula and the C. monedula. Five species and one genus of digeneans: L. paradoxum from the C. caeruleus and the P. major; Leucochloridium sp. from the A. otus and P. major; P. confertus from the T. merula; P. maculosus from the C. caeruleus; P. ovatus from the D. major and Z. petiolatus from the C. monedula represent new Polish host records. S. striges and L. postgonoporus represent new Polish locations.

Opis:
Presence of plant species, associated with ancient forests (continuous existence >200 years) can be used for assessing woodland biodiversity. The aim of this study is to specify which plant species, included in the ancient forests plant species list, can indicate old woodlands in parks and what plant features are characteristic for certain habitat types. Richest in ancient forest plant species are those fragments of woodlands, which have existed continuously for at least 120 years, and their fragments suffered least from human pressure during that time, whereas recent woodlands are characterized by a small share of ancient forest indicator species and domination of nitrophilous species. Investigated plants usually propagate vegetatively, their seeds are of a small size and they have regularly, densely set leaves. Plants associated with ancient woodlands are good indicators of woodland continuity in parks so they can be used for age assessment in these areas. Accumulation of such plants can be a useful criterion in parks evaluation. Proposed idea of sustainable management of a park space, including selection of areas of a great ecological value, can be a chance to preserve woodland biodiversity.

Opis:
Fragmentation of landscapes and habitats has been identified as the main driver of biodiversity loss. Ecological corridors may support the conservation of biota in fragmented landscapes due to enhanced habitat connectivity. We conducted a study in order to assess the potential of a linear woodland landscape element along a railway line as ecological corridor using carabid beetles as indicators. The results showed that for some forest species the studied woodland strip has potential as an ecological corridor. Trophy and soil acidity were most often significantly correlated with parameters and species, but width of the woodland strip and distance from the forest site were of highest importance for the formation of the whole carabid assemblages. The results of our study provide with information regarding rules for the construction of woodland strips as ecological corridors. Management strategies should integrate such areas in concepts of sustainable regional development.

Opis:
We investigated whether high−intensity road traffic affects the nestbox occupancy pattern of secondary hole−nesting birds. Field studies were carried out in two forests in south−eastern Poland (Lasy Janowskie forest and Polichna forest). Both complexes were included in NATURA 2000 network. In our knowledge it was first field experiment on road−traffic noise influence on forest birds, conducted in the Polish environmental conditions. The results of this experiment can be used in work on the impact of road projects on forest birds. Nestboxes were hung at twelve linear transects located perpendicularly to the busy road and they were regularly inspected in 2011−2012. Road noise was measured by use of a digital measurer of sound level at each nestbox. Monitoring the activity of predators on the study area was done with the help of digital trail cameras and experiment with use of artificial nest with eggs. Noise level decreased with distance from the road. In the first year of experiment we observed that the birds settled preferentially habitats in the vicinity of road. However in next season the number of occupied nestboxes was independent from the distance from road. We found that the pressure caused by predators on the study area was very low, creating safer nesting places for birds. Our results provide evidence that these birds are well adapted to cope with anthropogenic noise. Some species of birds preferred nesting in neighbourhood of road.
