Opis:: The aim of this research, based on a series of unpublished lamps from Mersin, Malatya and Mardin museums and all the necessary parallels, is to propose a new hypothesis on the chronology and diffusion of the type of lamps Donald Bailey nicknamed “teapot-shaped”, well attested in continental Turkey (Konya, Akşehir, Sagalassos), where their production is very well framed. In the coastal part of Asia Minor, on the contrary, this type seems to know at least three peaks of production: the Hellenistic period, the 2nd to 3rd century AD and, finally, the 6th century AD.

Opis:: The lychnological material from Roman Hispania includes a little-known type of wheel-made oil lamp that has recently been studied for the first time: a form of small dimensions, produced between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. Most of the known finds are from Cartagena, hence the idea that the type may have originated from this harbor. The paper reviews the available data on this lamp production and suggests a specific functionality for the type based on some peculiar characteristics.

Opis:: At Akrai in southeastern Sicily, the University of Warsaw excavations have unearthed a huge quantity of small, wheel-made, beige-slipped lamps belonging to the Roman Republican type Ricci C. The most important conclusions from the research concern the functionality of these lamps, both as devices used for lighting in everyday life and as unused elements of votive deposits, as well as their enduring presence in southeastern Sicily when they had all but disappeared elsewhere in the Roman world. The type is a derivative of an old form and peaked in popularity in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. The last examples of this type seem to have been produced in the reign of Augustus.

Opis:: Excavation in the temenos of Allat in Palmyra in the 1970s uncovered a deposit of clay lamps with a few vessels and coins. Inside the cella, the lamps were clustered in two groups, a few examples were found also in the temenos outside the cella. All in all, there were 191 complete and fragmentary lamps, the bulk of them made locally in Palmyra. The assemblage reveals two trends in oil lamp production: wheel-made lamps with different numbers of nozzles and imitation of imported lamps moulded from archetypes. The assemblage from the temenos is of 4th century date, but many of the moulded lamps copy Greek and Roman types from the 3rd century, with Antioch-on-the-Orontes being a highly probable source of inspiration for Palmyrean lampmakers. Special in this context are rectangular multi-nozzled lamps with relief decoration, in one case menorahs framing a scallop shell and a figural fieze, most likely a Dionysiac thiasos.
