Opis:
In this work, the affinity of the heterogeneous Sorbonorit B4 (SB4) activated carbon toward methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), isopropyl alcohol (IPA), n-propyl alcohol (NPA) and isobutyl alcohol (IBA), and water vapours was examined. Adsorption equilibrium measurements demonstrate a higher adsorption capacity of water vapour than organic compounds at relative pressures above 0.4. The adsorption capacities of SB4 at the same vapor pressure followed the order: NPA> IPA> MEK> IBA. The Langmuir, Dubinin-Radushkevich, Dubinin-Astakhov, and Toth isotherm models were chosen to describe experimental results. Based on the multi-temperature isotherms, the values of the isosteric heat of adsorption were determined for various adsorbate loading. The results indicate a strong influence of VOC molecule structures and the surface heterogeneity of SB4 on the adsorption efficiency. For IPA-SB4 pair, the maximum temperature rise in a fixed-bed bed in the adsorption process and the energy requirement for regeneration were calculated and experimentally verified.

The results of 4-aminopyrimidine (4-APM) impact studies on the double layer parameters at the R-AgLAFE/ chlorates(VII) interface in the solutions with different water activity as well as different properties of the mixed adsorption layer of 4-aminopirimidine – sodium 1-decanesulfonate (SDS) and 4- aminopyrimidine - hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) at the electrode/solution interface are discussed. The differential capacity of the double layer (Cd) at the R-AgLAFE/ basic solution interface was measured using the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The zero charge potential (Ez) was determined using a streaming electrode, while the surface tension at the zero charge potential (Yz) was measured using the largest pressure method inside the mercury drop. It was proved that both the 4-aminopirymidine concentration and water activity have an essential effect on the doublelayer parameters on the R-AgLAFE/ chlorates(VII) interface. In the studied systems: 4-APM - SDS and 4-APM - CTAB, 4-aminopyrimidine dominance was observed.

Opis:
Organic substances in water, both of natural and synthetic origin, especially their share in water treatment by-products can pose a threat to drinkers. That is why adsorption, as a very effective process of dissolved organic compounds removal is commonly used in surface water treatment systems. For process design and optimization, mathematical models both mechanistic and statistics are created. The results of the investigation of granular activated carbon (GAC) bed adsorption in a pilot plant with a capacity of 3 m3/h have been presented. Two systems have been tested – without ozonation and with ozonation before GAC adsorption. The models of the kinetics of GAC adsorption capacity exhaustion, the model of minimal GAC bed depth (adsorption zone) for assumed process efficiency (C/CO), as well as the model of adsorption zone movement velocity to the bottom of GAC bed, have been created. For the state of adsorptive equilibrium, the first model enables the determination of the isotherm parameters of the Freundlich type, the two other models are used for the calculation of GAC bed run time for the certain bed depth and assumed efficiency. It has been shown that in this case (water pollution, GAC type, pre-treatment) ozonation plays a minor role.

The primary purpose of this research was the study of two natural clays Dardha (Korçë), which is located at 40°31'16.59'' N and 20°49'33.69'' E and the clay of Brari (Tirana), 41°21'14.49'' N and 19°50'17.74'' E for the removal of dimethoate, in order to clean the waters polluted with this pesticide. During the Clay-water+dimethoate contact time from 0 to 24 hours, there was spontaneous hydrolysis of dimethoate, which also theoretical data accurately explains this phenomenon. Clay-water+dimethoate contact time longer than 120 hours are not of interest for this study, because after this time there is no adsorption of dimethoate. Our experimental study focused on contact times from 24 to 120 hours. The adsorption process of dimethoate with concentrations of 0.2 mg/mL was studied; 0.3 mg/mL and 0.5 mg/mL in the natural clays of Dardhe and Brari. The desorption process of dimethoate from these clays was also studied. The desorption process was fast, where in the first two hours of contact 80 to 95% dimethoate was desorbed.

Clay minerals, as adsorbents, are widely available, have large specific surface area, and the ability for cation exchange, which makes them applicable in wastewater treatment from heavy metal ions. This study investigated the effect of acid modification on the porous structure and adsorption properties of montmorillonite (MMT) and palygorskite (PAL) clays of the Cherkasy deposit (Ukraine). Acid modification of clay samples was carried out with chloride acid after preliminary refining. Clay particles were analyzed using optical polarization microscopy with recording of digital images of the study. The area and perimeter of individual particles of clay samples were determined. The equivalent diameter and shape factor were calculated. The porosity characteristics of the samples were determined. Pore surface area was calculated by the Brunauer-Emmette-Teller (BET) method. Total volume, mean diameters, and pore size distribution were obtained using the Density Functional Theory (BFT) method. Acid modification improved the porous structure of clay samples. BET surface area of the pores of the initial sample of palygorskite clay is significantly higher compared to the montmorillonite type clay (140.66 and 83.61 m2/g, respectively). Acid modification of the PAL sample contributes to an increase in the BET surface area by approximately 1.7 times. Acid modification increases the surface area and total pore volume by approximately 2.3 times for MMT samples and 1.76 times for PAL samples. Dimensional characteristics of the pores of the MMT sample were to shift after activation, while for the PAL sample, their average size increases sharply by approximately 3.2 times. This suggested the additional formation of pores in the interfibrillar regions of the PAL sample during its acid activation. The effect of acid modification on the sorption capacity was investigated by means of methylene blue exhaustion. Sorption efficiency increases by 6-14%, compared to unmodified samples and is determined by the contact time and the type of clay. Increasing the contact time from 24 to 72 hours leads to an increase in the sorption efficiency of activated MMT and PAL samples by 36 and 30%, respectively. Acid-activated clay minerals, in particular montmorillonite, can be used as part of sorption elements to increase the efficiency of wastewater treatment technologies from heavy metal ions.

The aim of the study was to use regenerated activated carbon to adsorb phenol from a river. Coconut shell activated carbon was derived from used tap water filter cartridges. The activated carbon was carbonised and then activated with KOH at 200°C, under a nitrogen atmosphere. The resulting adsorbent was characterised on the basis of nitrogen adsorption by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis and point of zero charge (pH PZC). The study of periodic adsorption included kinetic and equilibrium modelling, determined the effect of solution pH on efficiency and the possibility of regeneration and reuse of the adsorbent. The efficiency of phenol removal from model water was evaluated, followed by the possibility of their adsorption from a polluted river in Silesia Province. Phenol adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The adsorbents showed high adsorption abilities, as determined by the Langmuir isotherm model. The model fits the experimental data well. The concentration of phenol in the river was in the range of 0.45-0.77 mg∙dm-3, which means that its value was at least five times higher than the standard values. The use of regenerated activated carbon from waste filter cartridges removed phenol from the river by 78% using optimal test parameters.

Using water hyacinth as a phytoremediation agent produces abundant biomass due to periodic harvesting in the system. One of the alternative uses of water hyacinth biomass can be a bio-sorbent to absorb metal contamination in the waters. This study aims to determine the quality of activated water hyacinth bio-sorbent, potentially reducing metal cadmium (Cd). The research was conducted from January to April 2022. The results showed that the parameters of water content, iodine absorption, and methylene blue in water hyacinth bio-sorbent had met the quality standard of activated carbon based on SNI No. 06-3730-1995. In contrast, the ash content still did not. In water, hyacinth stem bio-sorbents (stems + ZnCl2 and stems 300 °C + ZnCl2) obtained higher ash content (25.87 and 73.30%) than the ash content of water hyacinth root and leaf bio-sorbent with the same activation treatment. The optimum adsorption capacity (Qe) for the roots + ZnCl2 occurred at a contact time of 45 minutes which was 8.13 mg/g with an absorption efficiency (Ef) of 34.20%. For the root 300 °C + ZnCl2, the optimum adsorption capacity and absorption efficiency occurred at a contact time of 8 hours, namely 9.08 mg/g and 38.66%, respectively. The optimum adsorption capacity and absorption efficiency of the leaves + ZnCl2 occurred at a contact time of 4 hours, namely 7.63 mg/g and 32.12%, respectively. Meanwhile, at the leaves 300 °C + ZnCl2, the optimum adsorption capacity and absorption efficiency occurred at a contact time of 8 hours with a value of Qe = 11.84 mg/g and Ef = 49.35%.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to assess the possibility of using natural carbonaceous materials such as peat, lignite, and hard coal as low-cost sorbents for the removal of Direct Orange 26 azo dye from an aqueous solution. The adsorption kinetics and the influence of experimental conditions were investigated. The following materials were used in the research: azo dye Direct Orange 26, Spill-Sorb “Fison” peat (Alberta, Canada), lignite (Bełchatów, Poland), and hard coal (“Zofiówka” mine, Poland). The morphology and porous structure of the absorbents were tested. Dye sorption was carried out under static conditions, with different doses of sorbents, pH of the solution, and ionic strength. It was observed that the adsorption of Direct Orange 26 dye on all three adsorbents was strongly dependent on the pH of the solution, while the ionic strength of the solution did not affect the adsorption efficiency. The adsorption kinetics were consistent with the pseudo-second-order reaction model. The stage which determines the rate of adsorption is the diffusion of the dye in the near-surface layer. The process of equilibrium adsorption of Direct Orange 26 dye on all tested adsorbents is best described by the Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity for peat, brown coal and hard coal was 17.7, 15.1 and 13.8 mg/g, respectively. The results indicate that peat, lignite, and hard coal can be considered as alternative adsorbents for removing azo dyes from aqueous solutions.

Opis:
The main product of the conversion of ethanol to acetone on a ZnO-CaO catalyst is acetone, the yield of which strongly depends on the composition of the reaction environment. When oxygen is present, the yield of products of destructive and complete oxidation increases greatly. In contrast, when water vapor is present, both the selectivity and conversion of ethanol increase. Therefore, the conversion of ethanol is the limiting step in the overall process, which determines the selectivity of the conversion of ethanol to acetone. In this regard, it appeared suitable to investigate the effect of introducing water to the contact zone. As experiments indicated, the addition of water caused a significant effect on the conversion, selectivity, and acetone yield on the ZnO-CaO catalyst. As the partial pressure of water vapor increases, the conversion of ethanol and the acetone yield increase, while the yield of carbon dioxide decreases. The decrease in carbon dioxide is associated not only with the inhibition of the conversion of ethanol to CO2. In this study, the adsorption of water vapor and ammonia on the surface of the ZnO-CaO catalyst was examined by infrared spectroscopy method. It has been shown that water vapor at low temperatures is adsorbed on the catalyst surface in the molecular form, while at higher temperatures it is adsorbed in the dissociative form. Co-transformation reactions of ethanol with acetic acid, acetaldehyde with ethylene, and acetaldehyde with acetic acid have been studied. The obtained results indicated that acetone is formed mainly through the stage of complexation of acetaldehyde with ethylene. The isomerization reaction of 1-butene to 2-butene has been investigated. It was found that the yield of cis-2-butene in the absence of water vapor is higher, likely attributed to the molecular adsorption of water on Lewis centers. Based on these findings, a scheme for the vapor-phase conversion of ethanol into acetone on the studied catalysts was formulated.
Zbadano reakcję izomeryzacji 1-butenu do 2-butenu.

Opis:
Contamination of water bodies by heavy metals is a continuously growing environmental issue. High concentrations of mercury (Hg) in river waters are a recognized environmental problem, because it is one of the most toxic heavy metal ions as it causes damage to the central nervous system. Its negative impact has led to the development of different methods for the treatment of effluents contaminated with Hg(II). The aim of this article is to evaluate the use of coffee (Coffea arabica) residues as adsorbent of Mercury in an aqueous solution. Four kinetic models, including intraparticle diffusion, pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and Elovich kinetic models were applied to explore the internal mechanism of mercury adsorption. Results indicate that the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models could accurately describe the adsorption process. It means that chemical adsorption play an important role in the adsorption of mercury by activated carbon. Meanwhile, the external mass transfer process is more effective in controlling the activated carbon mercury adsorption according to the fitting result of the pseudo-first-order model. The fitting to Langmuir’s model suggested that the material surface is energetically homogeneous. The technique of contaminated biomass encapsulation proved to be safe for short-term disposal when metal recovery is not desired.

Iron is one of the groundwater contaminants that negatively impact health and the environment. This study is attempted at introducing low cost natural adsorbent for that adsorbs iron from synthetically prepared iron water. Sawdust and barley husks were used as a filter media, either alone or at different mixing ratio of sawdust/barley husks (1:1, 0.5:1, 1:0.5), to study the effect of adsorbent dose on the removal efficiency. Synthetic water of iron was used at different initial concentrations (10, 25, 40, 65, and 80) mg/L to study the effect of initial iron concentration on the removal efficiency. The filtration process was conducted at a surface loading rate of 3 m3/m2.hr. The results showed higher removal efficiency with the increase of iron initial concentration. The results indicated that removal of iron ranged (90–99.34%) for all types of filter media. The best removal was found to be 99.34% at a mixing ratio of 0.5:1 (sawdust/barley husks) at 80 mg/L initial concentration. As a conclusion, Removal of iron was very successfully observed with absorbent materials sawdust and barley husk, which makes the treatment of iron even possible in rural areas and when high concentration of iron is present.

Functional polymers are increasingly being used as materials with a range of unique properties. Due to their structure and relatively high flexibility in a synthetic context, they are becoming highly relevant in a variety of applications. One of the numerous examples of the use of functional polymers is water treatment. Using the adsorption phenomenon, it is possible to remove or reduce the amount of harmful organic compounds and heavy metal ions in the water. This review provides information on both the synthesis methods and characterization of functional polymers in terms of their adsorption properties. Among others, this paper presents the results of research on functional polymers carried out by Professor Schroeder's research group. The research was mainly focused on the selective adsorption of dyes and heavy metal ions, which are significant water pollutants. The overall results show that the adsorption of the synthesized polymer materials is high influenced by parameters such as pH, temperature, contact time of the adsorbent with the adsorbate and the initial adsorbate concentration. In the case of the adsorption phenomenon, the Langmuir or Freundlich isotherm turned out to be the most appropriate model for the tested materials, while in the case of kinetic models, the highest R2 coefficient was usually obtained using the pseudo-second-order equation.

The Niger Delta Oil contaminated water was treated by adsorption using sisal fibre activated carbon (SFAC) doped with silica nanoparticles (SNP) synthesized from Ofada rice husk which was carbonized at temperatures 400 °C and 650 °C. The SNP was synthesized at 600 °C (SNP-1) and 800 °C (SNP-2). The proportion in SFAC: SNP for both temperature values was 4.8:0.2 with a basis of 5 grams of the adsorbent. The samples were characterized by SEM, BET analysis, XRF and XRD. The adsorption equilibrium studies obeyed Langmuir adsorption isotherm; as the linear correlation value was close to unity, with a separation factor of 0.004. SNP-1 shows amophous nature having Fe2O3 and SNP-2 shows crystalline nature which consist of quartz. SNP-2 was used for the study due to its high surface area observed in the BET. High % removal efficiency of 99.84 was attained with silica nanoparticle (SNP-2) integrated in sisal fiber activated carbon (SFAC carbonized at 400 °C).

Opis:
In this research, the ability of calcareous soil to absorb ammonium was investigated and the effect of compost amendment as a natural organic source on ammonium adsorption was also studied. The pH, dissolved ammonium concentrations, ammonium adsorption capacity, and cation exchangeable capacity for the soil samples were analyzed in relation to an untreated control and treatment with compost under ambient temperature and different initial ammonium concentrations (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 70, and 100 mg/L). The amounts of ammonium adsorbed increased along with initial concentrations of dissolved ammonium for control and treatment with compost. The models evaluated in this study included the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. Ammonium adsorption was found to conform to the Freundlich equation isotherm more than that with Langmuir. The highest adsorption capacity was exhibited by 100 mg/L added initial ammonium concentration. Adding compost as a source of organic matter enhanced the adsorption capacity of calcareous soil with an increase in the adsorption of 36%, which indicated that the organic matter is a key limiting parameter in the mechanism of ammonium adsorption. Ammonium adsorption by calcareous soils is an important process in identifying the ammonium nitrogen route in soil-water systems.

Opis:
Manganese is an undesirable element in tap water but is common in the groundwater. Several methods can be used for manganese removal, including adsorption. Mined rocks are commonly evaluated as adsorbents and it was the objective of this paper – to investigate the Ukrainian volcanic tuff and basaltic rock from the Ivanodolinsky quarry and compare it with Ukrainian zeolite as well as with literature data. The research was based on equilibrated batch tests at a temperature of 10°C and slightly acidic pH. The data were treated using Langmuir and Freundlich models in the linear form. The results indicated the spontaneous and favourable adsorption of manganese. The volcanic tuff was characterized by the highest adsorption capacity, twice higher than basalt and zeolite. The heterogeneity of the active adsorption sites on the tuff was also greater and resulted from the diversity of the mineral composition. Considering the literature data, the properties of tuff are worth further research.
