- Opis:
- Palaeoecological investigations of the underwater culture layer near the western shore of Ostrów Lednicki (Tobolski 1989, Polcyn 1991) have proved the need to define this kind of sediment. To take a closer look at the problem, the first part of the paper presents some of the definitions which have appeared in Polish archaeological literature since the World War II. This review is followed by a discussion of the lake as an environment for the accumulation of culture sediments. According to the presented view, the lacustrine deposits seem to be a more valuable source of miscellaneous artefacts used in the reconstruction of human and vegetational history than terrestial archaeological sites. Culture sediments recorded phenomena which today it is possible to decode by means of modem palaeoecological analysis. It also gives an opportunity to describe the underwater culture layer on the basis of non-archaological methods. The last part of the paper contains a suggestion for defining the underwater culture layer. For the time being, it should facilitate a complete understanding of this term. An underwater culture layer is formed when the lake’s natural sedimentation process is disturbed or influenced directly by man (e.g. bridge or dyke construction, settlement of lake shores etc.). When the lacustrine environment is indirectly influenced by man the sediment formed is said to be of anthropogenic origin. The definition is of interim character and is expected to become more and more precise with the progress of research.
