Zbigniew Braun, żołnierz Armii Krajowej, powstaniec warszawski i więzień niemieckich stalagów, został wezwany do Rejonowej Komendy Uzupełnień „ludowego” Wojska Polskiego w Białej Podlaskiej, gdzie złożył własnoręczny życiorys obejmujący lata II wojny światowej. Artykuł jest szczegółową, krytyczną analizą tego dokumentu.
In November 1947, after returning to communist Poland, 2nd Lt. Zbigniew Braun, a soldier of the Home Army, a Warsaw insurgent and a prisoner of German stalags, was summoned to the District Reinforcement Command of the “People’s” Polish Army in Biała Podlaska, where he submitted his own biography covering the years of World War II. The article is a detailed, critical analysis of this document.

W artykule ukazany jest pociąg jako miejsce heterotopiczne, „inna przestrzeń”. Zagadnienie to analizowane jest w kontekście struktury heterotopii Michela Foucaulta, która odwołuje się do sześciu zasad. Scharakteryzowane zostało życie i praca czeczeńskiej uchodźczyni w pociągu – obozie dla uchodźców w Inguszetii w 1999 roku. Dokonano także opisu historii wojen rosyjsko--czeczeńskich na przestrzeni wieków.
In this article, the train is shown as a heterotopic place, a “different space”. This issue is analyzed in the context of Michel Foucault’s heterotopia structure, which refers to six principles. The article characterizes the life and work of a Chechen refugee on the train that served as a refugee camp in Ingushetia in 1999. The text also describes the history of the Russian-Chechen wars over the centuries.

In the interwar period, Jan Emil Skiwski gained recognition as an outstanding literary critic. While the Nazis occupied Poland during World War II, as one of the few writers with ideological motives, he collaborated with the Germans, supporting their propaganda activities, including in the magazine “Przełom”. His attitude was met with general condemnation. After the war, the writer chose to emigrate, hiding behind a changed name, especially given that in communist Poland, he was sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment and loss of public rights. An interesting episode in his post-war biography is the friendship he developed with the German intellectual Jürgen Rausch during his stay in the Allied camp for prisoners of war in Italy. The article tries to present these special Polish–German relations of Skiwski.

Artykuł przybliża losy zwierząt (przede wszystkim koni), wykorzystywanych w trackie działań wojennych podczas I wojny światowej. Autorka, której bliska jest perspektywa historii nieantropocentrycznej, sięga po poświęcone między innymi tym zagadnieniom pionierskie opracowanie Érica Barataya pt. Zwierzęcy punkt widzenia. Inna wersja historii oraz po pamiętniki Ivana Cassagnau, francuskiego artylerzysty z lat 1914- 1916, odnosi je do napisanej przez Michaela Morpurgo powieści dla dzieci i młodzieży pt. War Horse (1982). W Polsce przełożonej dopiero pod wpływem adaptacji filmowej w reżyserii Stevena Spielberga z 2011 roku, dystrybuowanej pod kuriozalnym tytułem Czas wojny. Autorka artykułu w krytycznej interpretacji powieści zwraca uwagę na wartość (i niedociągnięcia) narracji prowadzonej z perspektywy zwierzęcego bohatera, zastanawia się, w jakim stopniu dzięki temu zabiegowi pisarzowi udało się stworzyć przekonującą wojenną biografię konia, wreszcie podkreśla wynikający z tej optyki pacyfistyczny wydźwięk książki.
The article talks about a situation of animals (especially horses) during military action of the World War I. The author, who chooses viewpoint of non-anthropocentric history, refers to the work of Éric Baratay Le point de vue animal. Une autre version de l’histoire [The Animal Point of View. Another version of history] and war diaries written by Ivan Cassagnau, a French artilleryman during 1914 and 1916, she confronts those two books with children’s novel War Horse written by Michael Morpurgo. In Poland this book is known as The time of war and it has been published in 2011, soon after it’s film adaptation, directed by Steven Spielberg, has appeared. The author of the article proposes a critical interpretation of the novel, she notes the quality (and flows) of the narration from the animal’s viewpoint, she wonders, if the writer managed to build convincing war biography of a horse, finally she highlights a pacifistic message of the book.

W artykule przedstawiono krótki zarys historii formacji Cichociemnych – Spadochroniarzy Armii Krajowej, na podstawie życiorysu jednego z nich – Bolesława Polończyka ps. „Kryształ”. Zaprezentowana biografia obejmuje dzieciństwo i młodość bohatera, następnie okres podjęcia pracy zawodowej, przerwany wybuchem II wojny światowej, tułaczkę do Francji, rekrutację do legendarnej formacji, wreszcie – czas służby w okupowanej Polsce oraz powojenne losy „Kryształa”. Życiorys stanowi tło rozważań nad dziejami elity polskiej dywersji w trakcie II wojny światowej – począwszy od czasu powstawania formacji, poprzez okres szkolenia kandydatów na Cichociemnych, a na służbie tych żołnierzy w ZWZ/AK po skoku do okupowanego kraju skończywszy.
The article presents a short history of the formation of “The Unseen & Silent” (Cichociemni) – Parachutists of the Home Army (Armia Krajowa), based on the biography of one of them – Bolesław Polończyk alias “Kryształ”. The biography covers the period of Polończyk’s childhood and youth, then – the time of employment, interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War, the journey to France, the recruitment to the legendary formation, finally – “Kryształ”’s military service in occupied Poland and his post-war life. The biography constitutes the background of the reflections about the history of this Polish sabotage elite during the Second World War – starting with the time of its creation, throughout the period of the training of the candidates, until their military service in the Union of Armed Struggle/Home Army (ZWZ/AK) after their drops into the occupied country.

The article discusses the reciprocal interpretation of biography and literature. The subject of analysis is the biography of Jan Darowski, a writer associated for many years with the literary group „Kontynenty”. The past evoked in Darowski’s memoirs has a hierarchic structure – apart from the longer time sections constituting the framework for stories, shorter sections appear (e.g. events measured in days, weeks, months), which are complemented by episodes essential for the author. Darowski’s biography shows the tragedy of people who, similarly to the writer, got entangled in history and becomes a proper context for interpreting senses included in his works.

This review is a short presentation and an analysis of the book България – страна на розите, published in 2018. The book consists of three parts – a phototypical copy of the first Polish edition of the collective book from 1938, a translation of this edition into Bulgarian language with biographies of the authors of the texts and several studies, dedicated to Metodi Konstantinov (the 1938’s edition editor), to Polish-Bulgarian political and cultural relations in the late 1930s and their local repercussions in Poznań and last but not least – to the language of the first edition and its translation and re-translation. The aim of the publication – to remind the first edition of the book, to make it accessible for Bulgarian readers and to restore the memory about its authors and editors – is thoroughly fulfilled. Moreover, an additional advantage of the book is that it makes its readers more aware of the difference in Bulgarians’ self-representational practices before and after the Second World War.

The article contains the comparison between the biography and autobio-graphy of the writer, Vicki Baum as the icon of success. Vicki Baum (1888-1960) was one of the most famous writers in the 1930, and once described as German Colette. Baum’s career stages have been outlined here – being a professional harpist, an aspiring writer, an Ullstein publishing editor, the bestselling author in Germany, her huge success and its consequences i.e. film adaptation of the novel in America and her career in the US as a screen writer for the biggest film production companies in Hollywood. In her autobiography, Baum poses to be optimistic. However, between the lines of her text the longing for the unattainable can be seen as the author realized that many of her novels were regarded as popular literature.

This article aims to expand information on the life and academic career of a historian from Łódź, the co-founder of Polish post-war Byzantine studies – Halina Evert-Kappesowa. Based on student files preserved at the University of Warsaw, as well as employee and promotion records in the Archives of the University of Łódź, the author has established facts such as the date and place of Kappesowa’s birthday, subsequent stages of education and reasons for her delayed promotions. She has also addressed Evert-Kappesowa’s achievements and their reception. This paper provides vital additions to the debate on the contribution of female historians to the development of Polish history. The text consists of two parts; the first is devoted to the biography of the heroine and her research interests. The second concerns the course of her scientific career.
