The present paper analyses Carnets du voyage en Égypte by a French painter and writer, Eugène Fromentin (1820-1876), using the concept of autobiogeography. The concept allows to examine how the author of a geographical description may be seen throughout this description and how s/he is influenced by the space. The paper argues that the personality of Fromentin emerges from his travel notes even though they are focused mainly on the description of the Egyptian space and the forms “I” or “we” appear there rarely. Three aspects of Fromentin’s personality may be seen through the analyses of his geographical descriptions of Egypt: the Orientalist painter enthusiastic towards the space; the traveler marked by his previous travels to Algeria who in Egyptian spaces sees Algerian ones; and the man who feels old and tired, refuses to discover the Egyptian space and who just wants to come back home.

Jan Minorski (1914–1980) i Edmund Goldzamt (1921–1990) byli w czasach stalinizmu w Polsce najbardziej wyeksponowanymi propagatorami socrealizmu w architekturze i tylko jako tacy uwzględniani są w dotychczasowych opracowaniach. Artykuł jest próbą krytycznej analizy ich relacji z podróży do zachodniej Europy, które odbyli w chwili zasadniczego przeorientowania oficjalnego dyskursu architektonicznego. Wznowiono wówczas bardzo ograniczone w czasach stalinizmu kontakty międzynarodowe, krytyce zaczęto zaś poddawać architekturę „fasadową” (tj. socrealistyczną). Przedmiotem zainteresowania są podjęte przez Minorskiego i Goldzamta próby uzgodnienia głoszonego przez nich wcześniej ideologicznego przekazu z rzeczywistością zaobserwowaną za żelazną kurtyną dla stworzenia nowej narracji o współczesnej architekturze. Są to prawdopodobnie jedyne tego typu relacje protagonistów socrealizmu opublikowane w czasach odwilży. Dzięki ich analizie możliwe będzie lepsze rozpoznanie zjawiska nazwanego „socmodernizmem”.
In the period of Stalinism in Poland, Jan Minorski (1914–1980) and Edmund Goldzamt (1921–1990) were the most prominent promoters of Socialist Realism in architecture, and it is only as such that they were considered in earlier studies. This article is an attempt to critically analyse their accounts of the journeys they made to Western Europe at the time of the fundamental reorientation of official architectural discourse. International contacts, which had been very limited during the Stalinist era, were then resumed, and the “façade” (i.e. Socialist Realist) architecture began to be criticised. Of interest here are Minorski and Goldzamt’s attempts to reconcile their previously preached ideological message with the reality they had observed on the other side of the Iron Curtain in order to create a new narrative about contemporary architecture. These are probably the only such accounts by protagonists of Socialist Realism to have been published during the Thaw. Through their analysis, it will be possible to better recognise the phenomenon known as “Socialist Modernism”.

The aim of this paper is to comment the links between the work of Louis-Sébastien Mercier, The Year 2440: A Dream If Ever The Was One, and narrative utopia model. The Mercier’s work is often considered as inventive fiction which presents a new type of utopia focused on the future, but a large number of traditional narrative strategies is used by the author to show Paris in 25th century. The future civilization is built on the Enlightenment ideas but it remains still attached by its culture to the 18th century. The Mercier’s work is inspired by the utopism but in this fiction the reader finds more a fictional realization of dreams and philosophical thinking about human nature.

A method is presented for evaluating the performance of piston internal combustion engines used as the main engines on sea-going ships and acting in typical operating conditions. These conditions are described taking into account the performance area of engines of this type. The presented method provides opportunities for calculating the numerical effect of the action using the integral calculus. The above effect is presented as a physical quantity expressed by a number with the metric unit called the joule-second. Proposed is the use of types of integrands (which are functional dependences of the energy converted in these engines on time) which make it possible to use the second fundamental theorem of calculus justifying the use of the Newton-Leibniz formula. The object of the analysis is the process of changes of the energy converted in the internal combustion engines during their operation, described with the aid of a deterministic model of the real process taking into account its sample realisation.

The data related to ice floe concentration and ice thickness were analysed. Sources of data have been verified by visual observation and by comparison in between information from different remote sensing sources. The results of this work exceeded initial expectations. The discrepancies of the information provided by various data sources result from the error of the measurement method, which can be as high as 15% of the concentration of ice floes. It should also be borne in mind that the more generalized information about the state of the ice cover, the lower probability of detection of ice floe patches of a high concentration and spatial extent. Each vessel that is planning voyage in ice should take into consideration inaccurate estimation of concentration and thickness of ice floes received by means of satellite remote sensing methods. The method of determining permissible speed of various ice class vessel in ice on basis of safe speed graph for the icebreaker was developed. A well-defined equation approximates relationship between speed of the icebreaker and the vessels of specified ice classes. Average distance of 24.1 Nm from sea ice extent line was related to all analysed lines representing 30-40% ice floe concentration (IUP product excluded) and 30.6 Nm for analysed lines representing 70-81-91% ice floe concentration. The maximal average distance of the furthest analysed line (IUP product excluded) was equal 37.2 Nm. The average standard deviation of that results was equal 8.3 Nm only. Average distances of analysed lines from sea ice extent line to maximal ice data values were found as follow: 8.4 Nm (23%) for NSIDC-CCAR ice age, 12.3 Nm (33%) for minimal distance of 30-40% ice concentration, 15.4 Nm (41%) for OSISAF ice type “ambiguous” zone from Open Water side, 25 Nm (67%) for minimal distance of 70-81-91% ice concentration, 26.6 Nm (72%) for OSISAF ice type “ambiguous” zone from 1st year ice age side, 35.9 Nm (97%) for maximal distance of 30-40% ice concentration and 36.3 Nm (98%) for maximal distance of 70-81-91% ice concentration data. In the parentheses placed relative distances from first ice data including IUP 40% concentration isolines. Sea ice extent of most of available data sources delineated the edge of “area to be avoided” for vessels of ice class lower than L1. Estimated average speed of L3 ice class vessel was from 3.3 knots till 5.2 knots at average speed 5.0 knots. For L1 ice class vessel estimated average speed was from 6.5 knots till 12.1 knots at average speed 9.7 knots. Relative standard deviation of averaged speed for both ice class vessels was equal 18%. The highest relative deviations were found up to 50% below the average speed value. The highest relative deviations upward were equal 22%. Above speeds for L3 and L1 ice class vessels corresponded well with average technical speed of “Norilsk SA-15” ULA class vessel equal 12,6 knots. The results of the work were not intended to be used for decision making on spot - “on-scene” - during direct guiding vessel in ice. They should be useful for initial voyage planning to allow decision-makers to identify the best freely available data sources for considered voyage and vessel of defined ice class; to understand advantages and limitations of available in the internet data sources; to estimate vessel’s maximal safe speed in encountered ice conditions, to estimate spatial distribution and correlations in between various levels of sea ice concentration and thickness. All above data allow estimate voyage time that is, in addition to fuel consumption, basic criterion of maritime transport economics.

The article analyses three different photo-texts of francophone writers: Jean-Philippe Toussaint’s Autoportrait (à l’étranger) (2000), Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio’s L’Africain (2004), Marc Pirlet’s Le Photographe (2006) taking into account the degree of the presence of photography in their structure. Those three writers accomplish both mental and physical travel in purpose to find their origins and to rebuild their identity. The paper analyses the authors’ approach towards the space from the perspective of Marc Augé’s theory (lieu and non-lieu).
Przedmiotem artykułu są trzy fototeksty pisarzy frankofońskich: Autoportrait (à l’étranger) (2000) Jeana-Philippe’a Toussainta, L’Africain (2004) Jeana-Marie Gustave’a Le Clézio i Le photographe (2006) Marca Pirleta, a w szczególności sposób funkcjonowania fotografii w strukturze dzieła literackiego. Toussaint, Le Clézio i Pirlet odbywają podróż fizyczną i mentalną w celu odnalezienia swoich korzeni i ponownego ukonstytuowania własnej tożsamości. W ten sposób tworzą swoje osobiste mapy, które autorka artykułu analizuje posługując się teorią miejsca (lieu) i nie-miejsca (non-lieu) Marca Augégo.

When a transport vehicle is put into service on a new route, all safety aspects of its movement should be comprehensively examined. In maritime transport, such situations arise especially when new sea ports are built, intended to handle selected types of vessels with specific characteristics. The construction of the LNG terminal in Świnoujście made it necessary to carry out an extensive analysis of the safety of LNG tanker passage. This was related to the shipping route from the Danish Straits to the berth. This article compares the routes planned at the design stage with the actual track of the tanker Al Nuaman during its first voyage. The tanker speeds on key route sections have been examined, i.e. in the approach channel from Cape Arkona to Świnoujście.

This study presents the results of research aimed at assessing the importance of a Voyage Data Recorder (black box) in an analysis of the ship conduct. The analysis was performed by teams of Polish maritime experts, judges, a ministry delegate and jurors of the Maritime Court in Szczecin, experienced captains, chief engineers and officers of the watch of the merchant fleet.

The operational limitations are discussed at the IMO as a part of the second generation intact stability criteria. Since it is a first attempt to introduce operational efforts into safety regulations, comprehensive discussions are necessary to realize practically acceptable ones. Therefore this study investigates actual navigation routes of container ships and pure car carriers in the trans-North Pacific Ocean in winter, because they are prone to suffer significant parametric roll which is one of stability failure modes. Firstly, interviews are made to shipmasters who have experiences to have operated the subject ships to identify major elements for route selection in the North Pacific Ocean. Secondly, sufficient number of actual navigation records is collected from Satellite AIS data to derive the weather criteria for the route selection in severe weather condition. Finally, shipmaster’s on-board decision-making criteria are discussed by analysing the ship tracking data and weather data.

Opis:
The results of testing the Bon Voyage system for an ocean voyage are presented in this paper. The main assumptions of testing were: ETD – 26.08.2016 and ETA – 05.09.2016, as established by the owner. All the data have been obtained from an actual voyage of a post-Panamax shipping container through the North Pacific. Testing was repeated again after completion of the voyage (post-voyage analysis). The data indicate that improved results with respect to fuel consumption could have been achieved using a different moment of second stage testing. Possible problems at planning, programming, and optimizing of the route leading through the ECA (Emission Control Area) zones with the use of onboard routing systems are also presented.

This contribution retraces the subjects of some novels by contemporary Italian writers of children’s literature. The novels were chosen amongst those that seem to best represent “good literature” that is able to build critical and creative readers and that is inclined to shape its own depiction of reality and to move in a utopian way towards the research. It is a literature that teaches children how to face life’s problems and find the right key to change the world in a democratic direction. The model of “nonconformist” literature to which this contribution refers looks at the epistemological model of Gianni Rodari and the fantastic creativity he uses to tell children about reality without restriction or censure. Rodari’s model has been recovered by many contemporary children’s literature writers, such as Donatella Ziliotto, Angela Nanetti, Bianca Pitzorno and Giusy Quarenghi. These authors are taken into account within this article for their ability to see literature as a tool for growth and a support for a child’s identity construction, with particular regard to gender identity, which today is still the focus of stereotypes and cultural conditioning that often weaken the development of children, negating their need to freely respond to their personal attitudes. A fundamental role in a child’s growth is played by grandparents, to whom some of these novels are addressed, as mediators amongst different generations and who are able to support children and young adults in the process of reconstructing their past and planning their future.
Il contributo ripercorre il contenuto di alcuni romanzi di scrittori per l’infanzia italiani contemporanei, scelti tra quelli che appaiono maggiormente esemplificativi del modello di “buona letteratura”, capace di formare lettori critici e creativi, in grado di costruire una propria immagine del reale e di muoversi utopicamente nella direzione della ricerca. Una letteratura che insegna ai bambini ad affrontare i problemi che la vita pone e a trovare nella letteratura per l’infanzia la chiave di lettura per trasformare il mondo in direzione democratica. Il modello di letteratura ‘anticonformista’ al quale si fa riferimento nel contributo fa capo al modello epistemologico di Gianni Rodari e della sua creatività fantastica, da lui utilizzata per raccontare ai bambini la realtà senza cesure e inibizioni. Il modello rodariano è stato in seguito recuperato da molti scrittori per l’infanzia contemporanei, tra cui Donatella Ziliotto, Angela Nanetti, Bianca Pitzorno, Giusy Quarenghi, che vengono presi in considerazione nel contributo per la loro capacità di cogliere nella letteratura uno strumento di crescita, in grado di supportare il processo di costruzione dell’identità infantile, con particolare riferimento all’identità di genere, ancora oggi oggetto di stereotipi e condizionamenti culturali che spesso indeboliscono uno sviluppo, del bambino e della bambina, libero e rispondente esclusivamente alle loro attitudini personali. Un ruolo fondamentale nel processo di crescita infantile lo hanno i nonni, ai quali sono dedicati alcuni dei romanzi considerati, mediatori tra generazioni differenti e capaci di supportare bambini e ragazzi nel processo di ricostruzione del loro passato e nella progettazione del proprio futuro.

L'article présente le premier voyage du jeune Benjamin Franklin en Angleterre dans les années 1724—172G. Il est basé principalement sur l'Autobiographie de Franklin et sa brochure A Dissertation on Liberty and Necessity, Pleasure et Pain, écrite pendant le séjour de l'auteur en Angleterre en 1725. La base de source se rapportant à cette période dans la vie de Franklin étant trop modeste, on a exploité, dans l'article, les plus importants travaux des philosophes et historiens américains présentant le développement de l'idée américaine. C'était indispensable pour la construction des conclusions régulières et la confrontation des idées propres. Cela a permis do ne pas subir l'influence du style littéraire très suggestif de Franklin. Les fragments de l’Autobiographie se rapportant au séjour de Franklin à Londres ont été soumis à la critique très perspicace. Par suite l'article omet ces questions de l'Autobiographie qui servent non seulement à la présentation des faits de la vie du jeune Franklin, mais aussi à la formation du modèle d'un bon, honnête et heureux Américain. 11 faut remarquer que plusieurs biographes c'e Franklin (non seulement américains) lient trop fortement ces deux questions distinctes. Ils s'en tiennent aux mots propres de Franklin et par conséquent présentent son image conformément aux désirs de son créateur (c'était une manoeuvre de Benjamin Franklin destinée à la lairge société américaine, non pas aux historiens vivant au XXème siècle). Le temps passé par Franklin en Angleterre est énormément important dans la contexte de sa future activité. C'est alors qu'il fit la connaissance de sa patrie (Mother Country) et du régime, de la science, de la culture et de l'atmosphère Intellectuelle de celle-ci. C'est alors que sa vision du monde subit un profond changement et sa façon de penser devint mûre. En séjournant en Angleterre Franklin vivait les problèmes principaux du pays. Le voyage lui permit d'acquérir de l'expérience; en participant à la vie scientifique et culturelle, de la Bretagne il transmettait ses idées et ses opinions. La brochure citée en peut être un exemple. Il y prit la position d'un déiste extrême. Il croyait que de telles notions, que la liberté ou le libre arbitre, n'existent pas, que le plaisir et la douleur s'équilibrent et que la poursuite du plaisir est la force motrice de la vie humaine. Il croyait aussi qu'il n'existe que la vie terrestre, dans laquelle tout s'accomplit. L'intérét qu'évoqua la publication de Franklin lui permit de faire la connaissance de célèbres savants, et parmi eux des physiciens, des médecins, des philosophes et des représentants des sciences naturelles. Dans leur immense majorité c'étaient les membres de la Royal Society. Franklin établit des contacts scientifiques avec William Lyons, Bernard Mandeville, Henry Pemberton, Hans Sloane. Peter Collinson. Il se transforma d'un apprenti d'imprimerie, inconnu en Angleterre, en intellectualiste naissant. La brochure inaugura le cycle des recherches des questions et des meilleures solutions des problèmes religieux et de ceux de la vision du monde qui le tourmentaient. Le principe le plus important accepté par Franklin était celui de faire du bien à autrui et de suivre dans la vie la (vérité, la sincérité, la probité. Le voyage et le séjour â Londres étaient une étape du développement de la personnalité de Franklin et du ramassement des expériences de tous les domaines de la vie. Ils devinrent aussi le prologue des séjours suivants en Angleterre et des contacts directs avec le continent européen.

The aim of this article is to compare the modelling of media and memoir coverage of the Brazilian voyage of the “Lviv” in 1923 in two popular illustrated cultural magazines of the interwar period: Świat and Tygodnik Ilustrowany. To reconstruct the forms the message, publications from the years 1922-1925 were traced, i.e., those printed before, during, and shortly after the voyage. Using the comparative method and editorial collation, B. Pawłowicz’s and T. Dębicki’s reports published in the magazines were compared with their first book editions. As a result of this contextual analysis, the author shows how the choice of the information strategy pursued by the periodical influenced the modelling of the travel message. This information strategy also determined the reduction of the components presented and led to the creation of two separate stories, bringing people closer to the reality of life in São Vicente, Portugal, or the Brazilian state.

Opis:
Within this paper results of ongoing investigations will be presented. Main subject of studies is laid on the present situation of alert management onboard ships navigational bridges and potential use of data recorded with mandatory ship-borne VDR equipment during normal ship operation to support the process of on board collision avoidance. The investigations and results discussed and presented in the paper are gained within trhe work in two different projects on research and technical development. The first is the European MARNIS – project on Maritime Navigation and Information Services. It is funded by the European Commission, Department for Energy and Transport. Secondly some of the results presented here are part of investigations performed under the national RD project "Maritime Safety Assistance Rostock" which is funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research Berlin.

Opis:
A significant increase in demand for navigation support systems called Onboard Routing Systems (ORS) can be observed in the World’s merchant fleet. ORS is a navigation-support system that enables route programming to warn of dangers and navigation constraints and determine the required route-safety level directly onboard the vessel. In this article, an attempt to analyze and compare two ORS systems has been made: the Ship Performance Optimization System (SPOS), by the Meteo Consult Group; and the Bon Voyage system by Applied Weather Technologies (AWT). Individual items, methods, and criteria of both systems for optimization and weather forecasting models utilized have been compared. Particular attention has been paid to the usefulness of the systems regarding the problem of identification and avoidance of hazards such as tropical cyclones and wave resonance. Ergonomics of both systems has also been compared.
