The goal of this paper is to formulate several observations on the psychological relations between vita contemplativa and vita activa (hereafter, respectively, VC and VA) which manifest in the context of the two following problems: (1) what basic psychological mechanisms may propel an agent to forsake one type of life for the sake of another; and (2) what effect an agent’s deep involvement in VC may have for his attitude towards VA as well as for his manner of pursuing VA (if he decides to abandon VC and pursue this way of life). In the paper, the distinction is made between VC in the strong sense (metaphysically/religiously oriented) and VC in the weak sense, and it is argued, among others, that the two features of VC in the strong sense—selflessness and otherworldliness—make VC a desirable complement of VA (in its public form): the involvement in the public sphere motivated by VA is likely to be not only more effective, but also more durable thaThe goal of this paper is to formulate several observations on the psychological relations between vita contemplativa and vita activa (hereafter, respectively, VC and VA) which manifest in the context of the two following problems: (1) what basic psychological mechanisms may propel an agent to forsake one type of life for the sake of another; and (2) what effect an agent’s deep involvement in VC may have for his attitude towards VA as well as for his manner of pursuing VA (if he decides to abandon VC and pursue this way of life). Therefore, human beings should not be thought of as (broadly) divided into two rarely interpermeating categories namely those who are ‘psychologically destined’ for VC and those who are ‘psychologically destined’ for VA. Opis:
The article analyzes the most important aspects of the life of therapists, the Jewish precursors of Christian monasticism. The author advocates the datation of the De vita contemplativa for the years 40-41 of the first century and presents arguments for the authorship of Philo. Then he emphasizes the apologetic nature of the text and its content. The author is in favor of the hypothesis that therapists were not essenes, but a separate group of ascetics in Judaism of the 1st century AD. He is not convinced by the hypothesis that the Philo’s treaty is a literary fiction and the presentation of an ideal community. Too many details in the text contradict this opinion and even indicate that Philo himself knew the life of therapists from autopsy. Direct influence of therapists on Christian monastic life is impossible to demonstrate, while indirect influence manifests itself in the following elements poor clothing, modest meals: bread, salt and water, devoting little attention to the needs of the body - only as much as necessary for life, getting rid of ownership by giving it to the closest relatives, praying at sunrise, praying with hands raised to heaven, practicing allegorical exegesis of the Old Testament, living in continence. In the case of cenobites: common life under the direction of the superior, shared meals, common prayers, houses divided into a residential part and a monastery as a place of prayer.

Opis:
The paper points to a hitherto not recognized quotation from Galen in the Old Church Slavonic Life of S. Cyril of the 9th century (chapter XI, 15) which demonstrates the Galenic maxim “contraria contrariis curentur”. The Galenic argument is brought forth by the Christian philosopher Cyril in a discussion with Jewish theologians. The paper firstly demonstrates that the author of VC does not only enrich Cyril’s speech with allusions to Biblical formulations but makes also the Jewish interlocutors use a direct quotation from Paul’s Epistle to the Colossians. The Christian and Jewish arguments complement each other leading to the ultimate Christian answer that Christ is the real physician to heal body and soul. In contextualizing the findings and pointing to another passage of Vita Cyrilli the paper shows, that the metaphor of “Christ, the physician” both times occurs in a context, where the Original sin is the main topic. Finally, the paper is concerned with the rhetoric of the metaphor and the limits of what can be possibly expressed by it. The ultimate healing in a Christian sense is expressed in the faith into bodily resurrection and thus transcends the comparison with concrete physical therapy. In contrast to concrete bodily health the qualities of a “body of the resurrection” cannot be positively named and thus are designated by the metaphor of “enjoying the fruit” in the heavens.

The article devoted to novel La lunga vita di Marianna Ucrìa of Dacia Maraini constitutes a reflection upon cognition by means of senses. The analysis concerns the experience of cognition of the world (people, situations, places) by the main character, deaf and dumb person, whose sensual cognition of the reality is dominated by the sense of sight and smell. The analysis concentrates on the character of smelling sensations, indicating their crucial but forgotten function of the contact with the reality and its interpretation. The article highlights the problem of non verbality and non-divisibility of perceptions of the sense of smell, which the author of the novel Dacia Maraini faced.

Opis:
The article was written to illustrate the possible impact of Vita Martini by Sulpicius Severus on Aelred of Rievaulx’s Vita Niniani. Both works are hagiographies, thus were written as prime examples of faith and Christian virtues without excessive focus on biographical accuracy, as was common during the medieval period. The works were created in diverse cultural and historical settings: the former portrays the life of Saint Martin of Tours, a very popular medieval bishop of Gaul, who was active during the 5th century; the hagiography was written by his disciple, Sulpicius Severus. The latter depicts the life of a missionary active in southern England, also in the 5th century, Saint Ninian of Whithorn. St. Ninian’s hagiography was, however, written seven centuries later by a well-known English abbot from Rievaulx, St. Aelred. The possible influence of Sulpicius Severus’ work on Vita Niniani by Aelred of Rievaulx can be concluded due to the similarities between the two hagiographies, the popularity of Vita Martini in Cistercian circles and, simultaneously, an almost complete lack of historical information regarding St. Ninian’s life. The fact that Aelred quotes the Bede Venerable’ history note from the 8th century – which mentions that St. Martin was St. Ninian’s role model in the field of missionary care and pastoral work – as his chief resource, makes this influence is all the more probable. To carry out this article’s objective, the contents have been divided into three sections: the creation of Vita Niniani; a comparison of Bishop Ninian of Whithorn as a historical figure (based on contemporary historical and archeological research) with the portrait painted by Aelred (based on the Bede Venerable’ note and a piece of literature by an unknown writer); to finally show a comparison of Vita Niniani and Vita Martini.

Opis:
Travellers’ discourses thrive on anecdotes. According to Stephen Greenblatt, they interpose between a series of similar, narrow experiences and a wider pattern they may indicate. This analysis deciphers how an anecdote from Passenger to Teheran (1926), the travelogue written by Vita Sackville-West, is not just an isolated flash but can indicate larger representational strategies. In her epic journey Vita Sackville-West travelled from London to Egypt, India, Persia, and then back to England, through Russia, Poland and Prussia; by boat, train and car. In the episode which is subject to a detailed analysis, the travellers were stopped at the Polish–East Prussian border and forced to leave the train. The consequences of what could be just an anecdote about an “unwelcome incident”, reverberate – as it turns out – far beyond the incidental because what is at stake at almost every border incident is a socio–political, geo–political, military and ideological reality. No matter whether such events are presented as adventures or in all seriousness, each border trouble has consequences beyond any “local moment”. To disclose some of the less obvious implications of the Polish–Prussian passage in Vita Sackville-West’s book is the aim of this essay.

The article quotes and analyses the editorial opening the first issue of the journal “Meander” (1946). A closer look at that text shows its hidden message – defence of values endangered by the new political reality. In 1953 and 1954 various periodicals criticized the editors of “Meander” for their conservative approach to antiquity. This campaign probably aimed at replacement of Professor Kazimierz Kumaniecki, the editor-in chief of the journal and the head of the Classics Department of the University of Warsaw, by Professor Bronisław Biliński, a scholar favoured by the Communist authorities.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the problem of the connection between the feast of women gathered in the Demeter Thesmophoria shrine on Cape Kolias (deme Halimous) and the celebrations of Thesmophoria in Athens. The starting point for the author is Plutarch's story (Vita Solonis 8, 4-6) that today is considered to be the proof of the tenth day of the month Pyanopsion rites which were part of the Athenian Thesmophoria. On that day women were supposed to go to the seaside sanctuary and then to move to the Demeter temenos in the center of Athens. The local feast was to be included in the state celebrations, but the problematic verse 80 of Aristophanes' Women at Thesmaphoria was thought to be a trace of its original separateness. A careful analysis of Plutarch and the tradition on which he is dependent (Polyainos) shows that the feast on Cape Kolias is not the same as the Thesmophoria. Numerous researchers compare Plutarch's accounts with the tradition of seizing the Megarians who conducted a plundering raid whose purpose was to abduct the women who had gathered at Thesmaphoria (Aeneas Tacticus, 4.8-12). Most of them think that it is the same tradition that was later divided in two. Differences between the accounts show that these are separate traditions dealing with different events. The stories are about different leaders (Solon in Halimous, Pisistratus in Eleusis). The course of the rites and their role in the related account differ from the ritual scenario in the shrine on Cape Kolias. In Eleusis the women probably remained in the sacred circle during the rites, and anyway they did not take part in the events. Hence there is no motif of young men putting on women's clothes with hidden daggers and of the dance on the sea-shore that is strongly emphasized in the tradition concerning Solon's ruse (apate) in Halimous. A lot points to the initiation scenario being at the root of Plutarch and Polyainos' story. A change in the status is also seen in the ritual behavior: choirs in the Demeter feast consist of boys; and the feast is the domain of women only. By temporarily entering the women's world the participants in the rite-event are transformed into warriors. The fight they will have to wage is different from hoplites' fight as victory depends on a ruse. Hence the initiation rite is a distant background for the story of the war against Megara. The rite seems to be different from the feast of Thesmophoria and to remind of rites from other Greek territories (Amnissos on Crete) that are similar in their structure. The fact that Plutarch's story about the celebrations of Thesmophoria is different does not mean that the thesmophoria in Halimous did not take place. Beside the main thought of the article the author has made an analysis of the evidence concerning the Thesmophoria on the territories of Attica, which has fully confirmed Kevin Clinton's thesis about a local character of the feast. Source evidence does not allow including the deme Halimous as the first day of the celebrations in Athens. They remained a separate feast, but contrary to other local celebrations they began on the tenth day of the month Pyanopsion.

The aim of this article is a reconstruction and interpretation of Marsilio Ficino's thoughts presented in "De vita coelitus camparanda" that, having a hermetic tinge to it, concern an idea of human's religious tranformation. In the article I attempt to demonstrate that "De vita coelitus camparanda" is a treaty of religious character which, contrary to the author's intentions, is closer to pagan religiousness than the christian one. Natural-magical efforts oficially presented by Ficino and efforts of demonic and ceremonial character suggested by him in some parts of the text constitute a complex of religious practices of hermetic origin that serve a purpose of human evolution. Methodology characteristic of magic — methodology that is subjectivistic but at the same time assumes that the human is a cosmos in micro scale, and a truly hermetic vision of reality indicate such a path of human’s rebirth that has no purely personal or local meaning but possesses a cosmic dimension.

Paulina Malicka Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu Abstract Nino De Vita:Sicilian poetry between dialectality and animality The purpose of this article is to draw attention to the issue of human-animal relationships in con- temporary works of poetry and prose by Nino De Vita (b. 1950) – a Sicilian born in Marsala, for whom the local dialect of Cutusìu contrade becomes the language of expression. The author leaves out of his writings anthropocentric models and introduces into them narratives concerning various forms of life marked by common and indivisible history. Both animal and human characters share similar fates, experience the same emotions, reciprocate feelings, suffer and feel fear. Still, what unites the human and animal world most is the language, or rather the dialect, of Marsala – a com- mon channel of interspecies communication. The expression of the animal nature in people who wish to most spontaneously and sincerely express their own emotions and moods, resorts to dialectal sound, the mother tongue, characterized by great intimacy but also violence. Finally, the dialectality and animality of Nino De Vita’s work involve going beyond the boundaries, tracking and leaving traces as well as marking the territory for fear of loss and being left. This poetry is written in the name of ‘another him’ and for him. Keywords: dialectality, animality, loss, boundary, trace

The first and most extensive part is a kind of lexicon with 177 entries: personal name and by-names of actual historical figures; biblical and mythological characters; names of ethnonyms, tribes and languages; geographic names (including names of sacred objects), difficult and archaic words. Part II contains the text of the Vita. The book is a handbook intended for a wide groupof lay audiences, including Bulgarian Studies scholars abroad. This handbook is a coherent and well-thought-out entity. The study combines the condition of scientific credibility with the feature of accessibility. There is a need for similar teaching aids in the didactic process of students of Slavic studies.

Opis:
The essay aims at continuing and completing our previous research concerning the manuscript tradition of the Vita Sancti Pauli Primi Eremitae of St. Jerome. The Basilicanus A.6 (alias E) manuscript, kept in the Vatican Apostolic Library (Archives of the Chapter of St. Peter’s in the Vatican), contains the whole text of the Vita Sancti Pauli Primi Eremitae of St. Jerome – though A. Poncelet places it among the unfinished manuscripts of the works of St. Jerome, while neither J.F. Cherf nor W.A. Oldfather make mention of it. The Basilicanus A. 6 (alias E) manuscript belongs to the „Q” family of the manuscript tradition of the Vita Sancti Pauli Primi Eremitae, established by J.F. Cherf, insofar as it possesses all the variations which are shared solely by the manuscripts codes belonging to this group. On a more technical level, this manuscript belongs to the first subgroup of the „Q” family, since it shares with it all the specific variations. As far as the manuscripts constituting the subgroup of the „Q” family are concerned, the Basilicanus A. 6 is more closely linked to the Vaticanus Latinus 1194 code rather than with the two remaining codes of the subgroup, namely the Vaticanus Latinus 5772 and the Vaticanus Latinus 6075. Nevertheless, the Basilicanus A. 6 cannot directly derive from the Vaticanus Latinus 1194, because it does not always coincide with it, and because it presents some meaningful additions, which are not found in the Vaticanus Latinus 1194.

Opis:
The article presents the image and the place of barbarians in the late-Roman society in the light of  Vita Epifani by Ennodius (Magnus Felix Ennodius). The analysis of the work, and above all the diplomatic missions carried out by Bishop Epiphanius, shows the world of the second half of the 5th century, co-created by Romans and the barbarians, in which the latter have their inalienable place. They are no longer guests and newcomers, but co-hosts and co-creators of the new community of the late antiquity. Ennodius' work appears as a call to the Roman clergy and aristocracy to work together with the new peoples present in the former Roman territories, and with their rulers. The work also presents a new image of the episcopal ministry, focused on building a new community gathering the Romans and the barbarians. Ennodius, a bishop-diplomat, carries out religious activities, while avoiding the controversial issues concerning relations with Arianism. He emphasises social and political activity in the face of a weakening civilian authority.
Artykuł przedstawia obraz i miejsce barbarzyńców w społeczeństwie późnoantycznym, w świetle dzieła Ennodiusza (Magnus Felix Ennodius) Vita Epifani.

The essay focuses on Bruno Schulz’s drawing, Three Figures 1935 (cardboard, pencil, black watercolor, 31.5 × 32 cm), preserved in the collection of the Art Museum at the Ein Harod kibbutz in Israel. For many years, Schulz specialists have not taken it into consideration. The drawing is a first-rate finished composition, signed and dated by the artist. The conversation of three characters may be an illustration to the short story “Spring” [Wiosna], showing Photographer, Father, and Joseph, or perhaps some unknown Schulz’s acquaintances. The drawing was donated to the museum at Ein Harod by the lawyer, Dr. Michał Chajes, in 1957. Thanks to Marla Raucher-Osborn’s help, some facts from Chajes’s biography have been established. Born in Drogobych, he was Schulz’s friend since their youth. He survived the Holocaust and after the Second World War lived in Cracow, collecting works of Jewish artists, some of which are now in the holdings of the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw. The drawing in question should be added to the catalogue raisonneé of Schulz’s works, while the activity of Chajes as a collector deserves further investigation.

Manufacturers of dental materials available on the market, to direct tooth reconstruction offer sets of composites-based naming colors mentioned by the shade guide. However, it has been observed a significant differences between the color of the restorative material as determined by the clinician based on the shade guide and the final color result of the filling. The Sailor, one of the more important works of Jerzy Szaniawski, has been regarded by the critics as dealing with the issues of truth and legend. The aim of the paper is to present a new interpretation of the play and to show that the key problem addressed by the playwright is the conflict between Form and Life, which is considered by numerous critics to be the quintessence of the so-called philosophy of Luigi Pirandello. The similarities between the theatres of both playwrights have been frequently, albeit in rather general terms, pinpointed by critics. Therefore, it is worth examining The Sailor in the context of works by the Sicilian author. The study indicates that Szaniawski’s play contains numerous elements vital in Pirandello’s works, such as: the problem of the relativity of truth, the impossibility to define a human personality, the confinement of an individual into a form as a consequence of judgements by others, and – most importantly – the conflict between Form and Life, and their mutual relations, all of which let us claim that The Sailor is close to Pirandello’s works.

Opis:
The paper begins with the historical facts related to the collection of CyrilloMethodian sources' photocopies in the Scientific Archive of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. It aims at identifying the original manuscript copies of some Prologue Vitaе of Cyril and Methodius whose photocopies were preserved in this archive, at finding out their present location, and at checking the available data about them. Three such manuscripts are located in the National Scientific Library of Ukraine in L'viv, one in the Shevchenko Scientific Society and another one in the holdings of the L'viv National Library. The originals of eight other photocopies, however, have not been located and most probably no longer exist, which makes these photocopies the only evidence at present and thus a precious part of the Slavonic CyrilloMethodian heritage. The author of the article presents all the available information about them and publishes the transcripts of three of these photocopies.

Aim: Humankind finds itself in a dire situation. Solutions have been put forth, but none has made a significant impact on carbon release or resources depletion.  I add my proposal, the literary device of the dictator, to those who feel there is some possible remedy for our predicament. Design / Research methods: This paper is part of a larger project which uses micro- and macro-sociology and cliodynamics, archaeology, evolutionary biology, and dissipative systems theory to describe both our global system, and its implications for our species.   I briefly critique three other approaches regarding their likelihood of success. Conclusions / findings: The self-organized dissipative system drives population, population density, and the exploitation and depletion of natural resources.  The system is the interface between humans and the environment.   It is unlikely any approach which is not 1. dramatic, 2. inclusive, and 3. determinedly focused on disarming the global system will prevent the complete depletion of the natural world, and the continued mass extinction. Originality / value of the article:  The paper challenges commonly held assumptions regarding the system and human participation in it.  The paper should be of interest to anyone concerned about humankind.  Implications of the research (if applicable): The paper has strong implications for policy.  It describes how perpetuating ideas like “sustainable growth” can only ensure the collapse of the global system, and perhaps the collapse of the natural systems as well.  The consequence of applying the research would be desperate, frighteningly objective, but will allow, perhaps, Homo to continue.    Limitations of the research  (if applicable): Future research could focus on re-interpreting data gathered by previous paradigms.  Cliodynamics provides insight into the future by considering complex relationships.  The limitations to the implications of the research lie in the fact that it is difficult for some to distinguish between “humankind” and the system.

Opis:
The above article discusses one of the aspects of the Vandals’ religious policy in Africa, that is, deportations of Catholic bishops ordered by the Vandal kings. Of course, the Vandal kings were Arians and the fact itself defined their attitude towards Catholic clergy in North Africa, which they occupied. Describing the background of these deportations, their course and other repression which befell Catholic clergy (and the faithful) in Africa in the middle of the fifth century, we can only rely on the sources of Catholic authors, who had a negative attitude to the Vandals and their leaders. They portrayed them as crude and bloodthirsty tyrants, or even as psychopaths. Discussing the deportations of bishops in the reign of Genseric and Huneric, the background of the events was also presented. It was deduced that the underlying reason for the persecution of Catholics was the Vandals’ urge to consolidate their power in Africa. The bishops deprived of their seats were deported by the Vandal kings to Numidia (to the grounds controlled by the Moors) or to the islands of the Mediterranean Sea (Corsica, Sardegna) which belonged to the Vandals’ state. There they were forced to hard physical work (work on the land, cutting down trees used to build ships). Many of them, however, did not reach the assigned places of exile – they died on the way from physical exhaustion.

Opis:
No 70 of post-synodal exhortation Vita Consecrata by John Paul II (1996) under the characteristic title In a constant search for faithfulness distinguishes itself against the background of other Church’s Magisterium documents on con-tinuing formation by offering more integral and comprehensive vision of develop-ment stages of an adult person called to a consecrated life. It also presents, in an innovative way, a possibility to experience a vocational crisis as a significant part of the formation process as well as suggests specific ways to help a person in crisis and provides development guidelines. While comparing suggestions offered by No 70 of Vita Consecrata post-synodal exhortation to contemporary theories of development psychology and andragogy concerning the development in subsequent stages of adult life and development opportunities offered by development and situaltional crises, one may conclude that Vita Consecrata suggestions are indeed valid and integral ones. They are definitely worth both further theoretical studies and putting them into practice in formation processes of religious congregations and training cours-es organized for directors of formation of religious communities in charge of both initial and continuing formation.
