Opis:
Aims: The aim was to check whether there is a relationship between ophthalmic and non-ophthalmic concomitant diseases and visual experiences during surgery. In addition, we wanted to verify whether visual experiences are influenced by such factors as age, gender, education, stress, etc. Methods: The patients phoned a few days after the surgery in order to be interviewed post-operatively by a 30-question questionnaire. Questions were asked on demographic data, concomitant diseases, both ophthalmic and non-ophthalmic, emotional and visual experiences during the cataract surgery p-value was calculated from the Chi-Square Test. Results: The study comprised 121 women and 87 men. 63.9% of patients underwent cataract surgery for the first time. Among 208 respondents 73 (35.1%) had light impressions and 77 (37%) reported visual impressions. Patients under 60 were more likely to experience both light and visual impressions (p < 0.05). Particular visual defects and concomitant diseases, both ophthalmic and non-ophthalmic, can influence the type of visual experiences. Stress was positively correlated with the occurrence of both light and visual impressions (p < 0.05) but it did not influence the exact type of visual experiences. For half of the respondents (51.0%), the impressions seen during the surgery were neutral. Only 14.4% of patients assessed these sensations as pleasant. Conclusion: Patients experienced a variety of visual sensations, which are not usually unpleasant, however they occurred more often among stressed patients and could also raise the stress level. Proper preoperative counselling is needed to help patients cope with the stress before surgery.

This article discusses visual experiences of new immigrants as recorded in literary works by Polish writers. Arrival in a new country was often connected with life in a city built according to unfamiliar plans and principles. This, in turn, resulted in confusion, loss, and longing for the home country.

Opis:
The objective of this study is to present various practical applications of collage-based methods (visual bricolage) as a way of boosting creative discussions with students and helping them to express their knowledge and experience using visual representation. This viewpoint paper is based on the experience of twenty classes conducted with the MA program and postgraduate students at Kozminski University between March 2019 and December 2021, when online whiteboards and visual metaphors were used. The method used was participative observation, as the author also acted as the workshop facilitator. To observe the user’s action, the contribution tracking tool that is available on the mural whiteboard (Mural, n.d.) was activated. The explorations during the workshops revealed two elements of online classes: Conceptualization vs Illustration, to determine whether photos and pictures serve as an instrumental illustration in the background of the story, or they are important elements that convey the sense of the students’ statements. Moreover, the paper contains various practical findings that help to facilitate creative educational workshops remotely.

Opis:
For environmental governance to be more effective and transformative, it needs to enhance the presence of experimental and innovative approaches for participation. This enhancement requires a transformation of environmental governance, as too often the (public) participation process is set up as a formal obligation in the development of a proposed intervention. This article, in search of alternatives, and in support of this transformation elaborates on spaces where participatory and deliberative governance processes have been deployed. Experiences with two mediated participation methodologies – community art and visual problem appraisal – allow a demonstration of their potential, relevance and attractiveness. Additionally, the article analyzes the challenges that result from the nature of these arts-based methodologies, from the confrontational aspects of voices overlooked in conventional approaches, and from the need to rethink professionals’ competences. Considering current environmental urgencies, mediated participation and social imaginaries still demonstrate capacities to open new avenues for action and reflection.

Opis:
The paper is based on ethnographical interviews with two adult people suffering for many years from visual snow syndrome – a neurological ailment. Some medical experts consider it to be a complication of migraine (so called persistent migraine aura without infarction), but the others regard it as a unique syndrome, not related to a migraine problem. The most common symptoms of the suffering are flickering dots of the visual field, particularly visible on transparent backgrounds, vitreous floaters, and persistent afterimages. It is indicated in the article that visual snow is not only a sensory disturbance, physiologically conditioned, but it is also a model of human existence, which causes the necessity of individual adaptation, creates the distinguishing character of identity, as well as marks personal interactions, emotional life and thinking. It is a complex phenomenon that intertwines biology with the processes of culture and shows an inextricable connection between human body, senses and mind.
