Biomaterials basing on natural polysaccharides, i.e. hiauronic acid, alginate, chitosane are an alternative for already applied bioresorbable synthetic materials basing on synthetic polyhydroxy acids. Their main advantages are good accessibility, low cost, easy forming and high biocompatibility. Additionally , they are a perfect matrix for bioactive nanoparticles i.e. hydroxy apatite (HAp), tricalcium phosphate (TCP) and silica (SiO2). The work presents results of research on nanocomposite consisting of chitosane matrix (CS) modified with a nanofiller, which was natural montmorillonite (MMT). Nanocomposite foils were produced by the casting method. In order to induce better biocompatibility, the surface of the CS/MMT composite was neutralized (bath in NaOH solution). The nanocomposite foils were subjected to a bioactivity test by incubation in SBF at 37oC for 7 days. It was observed that the CS/ MMT material surface showed a local supersaturation, which was a result of apatite nucleation. The CS/ MMT nanocomposites were investigated using FT-IR ( Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) and Fourier Raman Spectroscopy. FTIR measurements o f the samples were carried out on the transmission and reflection modes. The FTIR microscopy spectra were collected using BioRad Excalibur with ATR attachment as well as microscope UMA500 equipped with MCT detector. Spectra were measure at 4 cm -1 resolution in the region from 4 000 cm -1 to 600 cm -1 . FT-Raman spectra were obtained using a FTS 6000 Bio-Rad spectrometer with Ge detector. The samples were excited with a Nd-YAG laser (1064nm). Additional all materials in all steps experiments were observed under Scanning Electron Microscopy (Nova Nano SEM). Vibrational spectroscopy methods (FT Raman and FTIR) can be used for investigation of nanocomposite foils basing on biopolymers. High sensitivity the applied spectroscopy techniques show that in the result of the neutralization of CS/ MMT foil (via incubation in NaOH solution the biopolymer chain breaks. This phenomena is visible by intensity ratio between COC/COH bands. Increase of reactivity of chitosane chain lead to entrapment of PO4+3-, which is the origin of the apatite forms nucleation process. Chemical treatment of the nanocomposite foils, i.e. NaOH washes in fluences their chemical structure and microstructure. Neutralisation of the foils is the first processing stage which precedes the potential use o fCS/ MMT foils in biomedical applications. The materials show a tendency to apatite crystallisation which may support regeneration of damaged bone tissue. The applied spectroscopic methods allowed to observe changes in the whole volume of the sample. Individual ATR measurements taken at various spectral ranges and penetration depths allow to observe subtle changes in the polymer matrix caused by chemical treatment (NaOH and SBF incubation). Results of the investigations indicate that in the CS/ MMT systems new chemical bonds and related to them vibrations appear. Quantity and quality of the interact ions is related to characteristics of the nanoparticle and the presence of forming apatite structures.

Vibrational spectroscopy has been extensively used for in vitro and in vivo investigations of degradation mechanism and kinetics of different biomedical materials as well as it has been used to characterize the crystalline and amorphous domains in bio-mineralization process. Infrared and Raman spectroscopy methods are valuable tools in the biomaterials engineering allowing to study processes occurring during their preparation. In vitro tests, where the materials are immersed in simulated body fluids and/or artificial saliva, were used to evaluate the biocompatibility of biomaterials. This kind of tests are a wide range of repeatable and reproducible methods, which are regulated by international standards for commercial use and scientific development of new materials and products. The aim of this work was to examine phase composition of materials applied in dentistry. The bioactivity of such biomaterials was studied by immersing the samples in synthetic body fluid and artificial saliva. The changes were determined by the Fourier transform infrared and Raman microspectroscopy as well as scanning electron microscopy. It was found that results obtained by vibrational spectroscopy show the differences between the studied samples. Chemical reactions occurring during incubation of cements in artificial saliva as well as in synthetic body fluid result in formation of phosphates which deposit on the cement surface.

Opis:
An algebraic model of coupled anharmonic oscillators is introduced, capable of describing the stretching vibrations of medium-size molecules. This model is applied to the calculation of O-H vibrational modes of water molecules. In this paper, we have reported the stretching and bending vibrational energy levels of water molecule using the algebraic and density functional theory method. The results obtained by theoretical models show good agreement with the experimental values.

Developments of three new time-resolved vibrational spectroscopies and their applications to electronically excited states are reviewed. Transformlimited picosecond time-resolved Raman spectroscopy has been used to study the vibrational dynamics of trans-stilbene in the lowest excited singlet state. Picosecond time-frequency two-dimensional multiplex Coherent Antistokes Raman Scattering spectroscopy has been used to probe the structure of diphenylacetylene in the lowest and the second lowest excited singlet states. Nanosecond time-resolved dispersive infrared spectroscopy has detected the singlet and triplet intramolecular charge transfer states of 4-(di-methylamino)benzonitrile. Strong evidence for a charge transfer structure has been obtained.

We studied the photoinduced ionic to neutral phase transition in tetrathiafulvalene-p-chloranil (TTF-CA) using time-resolved infrared vibrational spectroscopy. By monitoring the charge sensitive $b_{1u}$ $ν_{10}$ band of CA after photoexcitation by a 1.55 eV pulse, we found that the photoinduced N-phase has the same charge of the N-phase in thermal equilibrium and there is no charge variation during the photoinduced phase transition. We also found that the photoinduced N-phase grows through at least two steps over 300 ps.

Lopinavir (LPV) and ritonavir (RTV) are anti-viral drugs used in combination and commonly prepared through hot-melt extrusion techniques. Mechanical processes are greatly involved, including blending and milling. Therefore, the crystal behaviour of LPV and RTV under the mechanical process is an interesting study. Here, the LPV, RTV, and their mixtures were processed by two different treatments: grinding and compression processes. The solid-state properties of the drugs were evaluated by powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Single-crystal XRD analysis was also carried out to confirm the packing structure in the crystal lattice. It was observed that LPV was very sensitive to the grinding process, where it tends to form an amorphous solid in both the pure and mixture forms. On the other hand, RTV has a very stable crystalline structure and was able to retain its crystallinity even under grinding. Both LPV and RTV were observed to be quite stable under compression, where both retained their crystalline form with only slight changes in their d-spacing values. This study highlighted the molecular origin of LPV and RTV crystal behaviour after grinding and compression processes.

Opis:
The prevalence of lifestyle diseases and trends related to healthy eating contribute to the constant search for chemical compounds with specific biological activity. Studies are conducted on plants and substances of natural origin that have been used in medicine for millennia. Techniques of vibrational spectroscopy are an underrated group of methods enabling direct analysis of plant raw material and food in their native forms. The presented examples of Arabidopsis tissues, various species and hybrids of poplar and Cistus herb classification, as well as quantitative analyses of active compounds in plant material and pharmaceutical products and determination of physicochemical parameters of common food (i.e. milk, yoghurts, pasta and flour), demonstrate the possibility of using vibrational spectroscopy for comprehensive analysis of samples of natural origin. Typical measurement techniques and chemometric methods are briefly described in this paper. The scheme of quantitative analysis based on vibrational spectra is shown and the impact of selected experimental parameters on the accuracy of the obtained results is discussed. The imaging techniques used to analyse the changes in plant tissue structures caused by genetic mutations were also presented.

Biomembranes, which are the structural and functional basis of the cells of all living organisms, have been an extremely interesting research object for biology and chemistry scientists for years. The multitude of elements constituting the components of natural lipid membranes, however, is associated with interpretation difficulties regarding the nature of the processes taking place in them. A useful research object that is a model of bilamellar biosystems with a significantly simplified composition and at the same time retaining properties that can be a reference point in relation to natural membranes are lipid membranes in the form of one or several component liposomes. It is precisely such systems built of molecules of dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) or dipalmitoyl phosphatidylglycerol (DPPG), and analogous systems with the addition of cholesterol (Chol), that were the subject of research in this work. Near-infrared (NIR) vibrational spectroscopy provides a suitable method for the study of the hydrated samples. In most cases it can be alternatively adopted instead of commonly used mid-infrared (MIR) vibrational spectroscopy. This technique was applied for the first time to identify the spectral changes associated with the conformational changes in the hydrophobic region of model lipid bilayers. Trans/gauche isomerization of CH2 groups of lipid hydrocarbon chains is accompanied by characteristic changes in spectral parameters of both νas,s CH2 bands and their first overtones (2νas,s CH2). The heating of all types of analyzed liposomes results in main phase transition (Tm) accompanied by trans to gauche isomerization of CH2 groups of lipid hydrocarbon chains. The NIR-spectroscopy was able to describe in proper way (similar to MIR results) the character of Tm in studied bilayers.

Zapewnienie bezpieczeństwa zdrowotnego konsumenta jest podstawowym wymaganiem stawianym producentom żywności. Bezpieczeństwo żywności zależy od czystości mikrobiologicznej produktów i surowców spożywczych, a także od obecności zanieczyszczeń chemicznych w żywności. W pracy omówiono metody spektroskopii oscylacyjnej, które mają zastosowanie w analizie jakości żywności, są też poręcznym narzędziem w wykrywaniu jej zafałszowań. Przedstawiono również zastosowanie radiolizy impulsowej do badań wpływu wolnych rodników na właściwości fizykochemiczne żywności i jej składników.
Providing the safety of consumer health is a basic requirement for food producers. Food safety depends on the microbiological purity of food products and raw materials, and the presence of chemical contaminants in food. The paper discusses the method of vibrational spectroscopy, which are applied in the analysis of food quality, there are also a handy tool in the detection of adulteration. It also presents application of pulse radiolysis to study the impact of free radicals on the physicochemical properties of foods and food ingredients.

This review provides fundamental information on theoretical and practical aspects of two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS). At first, is shown a brief development of this method since its introduction by Isao Noda in 1986. In the next part is explained the general idea of 2DCOS, and details of determination of the synchronous and asynchronous spectra from the experimental data. Next section includes comprehensive description of the properties and the rules for interpretation of the 2D correlation spectra. The most common problems with interpretation of 2DCOS spectra, and the ways of improving results of correlation analysis by a proper data pre-treatment are widely discussed. In addition, some of the most important modifications of this method like moving-window analysis and PCMW2D are described. Finally, the usefulness of the power spectra is presented. It has been shown that 2D correlation analysis is a versatile and powerful tool for data analysis and provides information not readily accessible from the original data set.

Phase transitions from insulator to metal induced by thermal excitation and by photo-irradiation at the surface of β'-(BEDT-TTF)(TCNQ) are investigated using vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy. The results are compared with linear reflectivity measurements which detect the information mainly from bulk. IR absorption spectra of $a_{g}$ vibrational modes of TCNQ induced by the dimerization are observed using vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy, and its intensity is found to become smaller by thermal excitation indicating the transition to the metal phase. Time-dependent degree of dimerization is also observed by pump-probe experiments with almost the same statistics as the static measurements. On the other hand, in the reflectivity experiments, the reduction of dimerization is also observed by elevating the temperature, however, the spectral shapes are deformed for the time-resolved measurements. These results imply that the different dynamics occur at the surface and in the bulk.

Opis:
Vibrational dynamics of the excited state in the light-harvesting complex (LH1) have been investigated by femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (FSRS). The native and reconstituted LH1 complexes have same dynamics. The ν1 (C=C stretching) vibrational mode of spirilloxanthin in LH1 shows ultrafast high-frequency shift in the S1 excited state with a time constant of 0.3 ps. It is assigned to the vibrational relaxation of the S1 state following the internal conversion from the photoexcited S2 state.

Opis:
Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is a fundamental technique capable to characterize proteins and to investigate their conformation and dynamics in real physiological environments. Actually, a FTIR spectrum is characterized by many features, which may be correlated to the different components of the protein structure. In the last decade many relevant results have been achieved with this technique in terms of chemical imaging of proteins at subcellular level and in the investigation of cooperative phenomena. This contribution presents a few examples that illustrate the capability of the FTIR spectroscopy to investigate both protein structure and function and the opportunities offered by IR synchrotron radiation sources. Indeed the high source brilliance of these sources enables FTIR micro-spectroscopy to be performed with spatial and time resolution not available with standard sources. Moreover, the combination of synchrotron radiation and new two-dimensional detectors open new opportunities to investigate in the IR energy domain different protein processes in real time and with proteins in their native environments.
