Opis:
In recent years, both airborne and terrestrial laser scanning developed to a standard technique for acquiring information on terrestrial landscapes. Here forest inventory and orchard management is considered. Inventory and parameterization of individual trees in orchards and forests are of large interest in nowadays society because of the potential of economical maximization of orchard production and the sustainable nnanagement of forests. Complex objects like trees require a detailed structural analysis before an analysis of single trees is possible. Skeletonization is such a structural description that enables the extraction of length, diarneters, volumes and position of individual branches but also of trees as a whole. Ln this paper an overview of current possibilities for skeletonization algorithms on trees is given. A new method of skeletonization, especially designed for the analysis of tree data is deseribed and its applicability demonstrated on airborne and terrestrial laser scanning scenarios. The evidence reviewed in this paper leads to conclude that skeletonization is a valuable tool for forest inventory and orchard management. It will be shown that skeletonization offers the possibility of species independent measurement of trees, which make skeletonization a general tool for parameter extraction on trees that empowers also research fields different from orchard management and forest inventory.

Opis:
Trees are long living organisms, rarely used in molecular experiments because of large size of the genome and long time of reproduction cycle. Sequencing data from Populus trichocarpa genome allowed for the development of research on the processes associated with tree biology such as secondary wood formation, long-term perennial growth, seasonal changes, biotic interactions, evolution etc. Reference data enable the investigation of non-model trees such as Quercus or Fagus, having ecological and economic significance. During projects scientists use genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and metabolomic approaches which contribute to better understanding of the physiological processes regulating tree biology. Data collected from these multiple studies need to be integrated. The integration of data is the subject of the newly established field of science called systems biology. This review presents progress in tree research after finishing the sequencing project of Populus. It concentrates on modern trends in 'omics' and systems biology study of temperate broadleave trees during the last 10 years of studies.

Opis:
The effect of monoterpenoid 1,8-cineol on the toxicity and physiology of elm leaf beetle, Xanthogaleruca luteola Müller under laboratory conditions (26 ± 1°C, 65 ± 10% RH and 16L : 8D h) was investigated. Initially, LC30 and LC50 values of the constituent were estimated to be 23.5 ppm and 31.9 ppm for the last instar larvae after 48 h, respectively. Significant changes were observed in the values of relative growth rate (RGR), efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI), efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD), approximate digestibility (AD) and consumption index (CI) between control and treated larvae with 1,8-cineol. The amounts of protein, glucose and urea decreased in the treated larvae in comparison with control. Similar findings were observed in the activities of alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase while the activities of glutathione S-transferase and esterase significantly increased in the treated larvae using CDNB and α-naphtyl acetates as the substrates. Morphological and histological changes brought about by 1,8-cineol in the present study are indicative of growth inhibition targeting specific organs such as those of reproduction. We believe that 1,8-cineol can be considered as a safe and environmentally friendly compound.

Opis:
Investigations were conducted on the strongly infested by microbes embryos isolated from seed stratified in non-sterile conditions or from tree buds. The results showed, that PPM (Plant Preservative Mixture, produced by Plant Cell Technology, Inc.) was very useful for increasing the percentage of sterile cultures disinfected in a 5% solution of NaOCl. The best way of applying PPM turned out to be adding the substance directly to the growing medium. At the concentration of 2 or 4 cm3 x dm-3 of PPM there was an 30% increase in percentage of sterile of in vitro cultures developed from embryos and 70-80% of cultures developed from buds, as compared with the control without PPM. At the range of concentrations employed in this study, no negative effects of PPM upon the development and growth of callus were observed.
