Opis:
In binaural audio systems, for an optimal virtual acoustic space a set of head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) should be used that closely matches the listener’s ones. This study aims to select the most appropriate HRTF dataset from a large database for users without the need for extensive listening tests. Currently, there is no way to reliably reduce the number of datasets to a smaller, more manageable number without risking discarding potentially good matches. A neural network that estimates the appropriateness of HRTF datasets based on input vectors of anthropometric measurements is proposed. The shapes and sizes of listeners’ heads and pinnas were measured using digital photography; the measured anthropometric parameters form the feature vectors used by the neural network. A graphical user interface (GUI) was developed for participants to listen to music transformed using different HRTFs and to evaluate the fitness of each HRTF dataset. The listening scores recorded were the target outputs used to train the neural networks. The aim was to learn a mapping between anthropometric parameters and listener’s perception scores. Experimental validations were performed on 30 subjects. It is demonstrated that the proposed system produces a much more reliable HRTF selection than previously used methods.

The paper presents proposal of a model of the fluidized bed boiler adapted for use in model-based controllers e.g. predictive, adaptive or internal model control (IMC). The model has been derived in the form of transfer function matrix which allows its direct implementation in the controller structure. Formulated model takes into consideration the principal cross-coupling between process variables which enables the opportunity to search for feasibility of decoupling control. The results of the identification of the dynamics of the 2 MW industrial bubbling fluidized bed boiler using the proposed model form was presented. According to the experimental data it was found that despite of introduced simplifications presented model allows the boiler behavior prediction.

Opis:
Expressing head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) in the spherical harmonic (SH) domain has been thoroughly studied as a method of obtaining continuity over space. However, HRTFs are functions not only of direction but also of frequency. This paper presents an extension of the SH-based method, utilizing hyperspherical harmonics (HSHs) to obtain an HRTF representation that is continuous over both space and frequency. The application of the HSH approximation results in a relatively small set of coefficients which can be decoded into HRTF values at any direction and frequency. The paper discusses results obtained by applying the method to magnitude spectra extracted from exemplary HRTF measurements. The HRTF representations based on SHs and HSHs exhibit similar reproduction accuracy, with the latter one featuring continuity over both space and frequency and requiring much lower number of coefficients. The developed HSH-based continuous functional model can serve multiple purposes, such as interpolation, compression or parametrization for machine-learning applications.

The relevance of this study lies in the fact that it presents a mathematical model of the dynamics of the propulsion system of a ship that takes into consideration the mass of water added to it. The influence of this phenomenon on the resonant frequencies of the propeller shaft is examined, and a transfer function for a controllable-pitch propeller is obtained for various operating modes. The purpose of the study is to improve the calculation of the dynamic operating modes of a controllable-pitch propeller by examining the features of a visual models. The VisSim software package is used in the study. A visual model is developed that considers the influence of the rotational speed on the value of the rotational inertia attached to the variable-pitch screw of the mass of water, and a special transfer function is proposed. The study shows that a transfer function of this type has a loop enabling negative feedback. An analysis of the operation of the propeller shaft at its resonant frequency is conducted based on the application of frequency characteristics using the transfer functions obtained. We show that in the low-frequency region, a consideration of the added rotational inertia using the proposed transfer function leads to a significant difference compared to the result obtained with the existing calculation method.

Opis:
The analysis of the influence of transfer function zeros on the parameters of state feedback controllers has been conducted. If a transfer function of a control object has zeros which are located closely to poles, the control object tends to singularity, and the influence of the input control signal to the states of the control object becomes weaker. The problem of the state feedback controller synthesis becomes ill-conditioned, which leads to the appearance of extremely large state feedback coefficients. In this case, the state feedback coefficients are sensitive to the parameters of the control object. As a result, the parametric robustness of the control system is reduced. Known methods of structural analysis of control object models are included amongst different methods of the numerical evaluation of the controllability and the observability, as well as methods of the model order reduction. These methods have some disadvantages, such as dependence on the state space representation form of the control object, ignoring a part of the control object model. In this paper, some ways of the preliminary structural analysis of the state space models of control objects have been proposed. The singular (Hankel) matrix is proposed for analyzing the properties of control object models. The singular matrix is the invariant characteristic of the control object in various state space forms and it characterizes the property of the control object completeness. As a result of the research, it was found that the coefficients of the state feedback controller are inversely proportional to the determinant of the singular matrix, and the determinant of the singular matrix is equal to the resultant of the transfer function polynomials. Thus the value of the determinant of the singular matrix depends on the location of the zeros of the transfer function. The method of the structural transformation (decomposition) of the control object for the defining the need of the reducing the order of the control object model is proposed.

The presented THD correction can be used in e.g. amplifier systems that cooperate with arbitrary generators.

Although abundant research has been done on this subject using laboratory windings as test objects, it is hard to find one, whose test objects are actual large-power transformer windings. Hence, a 400 kV disc winding consisting of 86 discs is used in this paper to study turn-to-turn short circuit with the help of the TF method. To evaluate the effects of this type of fault on TF curves, some mathematical comparison algorithms are used in this research.

Results of transfer function analysis for a class of distributed parameter systems described by dissipative hyperbolic partial differential equations defined on a one-dimensional spatial domain are presented. For the case of two boundary inputs, the closed-form expressions for the individual elements of the 2×2 transfer function matrix are derived both in the exponential and in the hyperbolic form, based on the decoupled canonical representation of the system. Some important properties of the transfer functions considered are pointed out based on the existing results of semigroup theory. The influence of the location of the boundary inputs on the transfer function representation is demonstrated. The pole-zero as well as frequency response analyses are also performed. The discussion is illustrated with a practical example of a shell and tube heat exchanger operating in parallel- and countercurrent-flow modes.

This paper provides an optimal approximation of the fundamental linear fractional order transfer function using a distribution of the relaxation time function. Simple methods, useful in systems and control theories, which can be used to approximate the irrational transfer function of a class of fractional systems for a given frequency band by a rational function are presented. The optimal parameters of the approximated model are obtained by minimizing simultaneously the gain and the phase error between the irrational transfer function and its rational approximation. A simple analog circuit which can serve as a fundamental analog fractional system is obtained. Illustrative examples are presented to show the quality and usefulness of the approximation method.

The article presents the results of the Adam and AMSGrad algorithms for online estimation of the Dielectric Electroactive Polymer actuator (DEAP) parameters. This work also aims to validate the learning by batch methodology, which allows to obtain faster convergence and more reliable parameter estimation. This approach is innovative in the field of identification of control systems. The researchwas supplemented with the analysis of the variable amplitude of the input signal. The dynamics of the DEAP parameter convergence depending on the normalization process was presented. Our research has shown how to effectively identify parameters with the use of innovative optimization methods. The results presented graphically confirm that this approach can be successfully applied in the field of control systems.

The elements of the paraunitary transfer function matrix are the transfer function of a given lossy FIR structure and the transfer functions for its complementary structures. The embedding method is used to design complementary FIR filter structures for several known lossy FIR filters. The lossless FIR filter matrix obtained in this article has a size of 3 × 1 and satisfies the paraunitary conditions. The conditions are described by a set of nonlinear equations. A modified Newton method is used to solve this set of equations. The proposed design method is used to determine the lossless structures of two-dimensional FIR filters for various digital processing tasks.

In this paper, to calculate overvoltage in air-cored transformer windings under very fast transient overvoltage, firstly, the voltage transfer functions are calculated which are measured by network analyser or calculated from the distributed parameters of transformer windings. Secondly, the voltage transfer functions are fitted with rational functions by vector fitting codes and then the rational transfer functions are order-reduced by the Pade approximation. Lastly, the resultant voltage transfer functions are synthesized by the elements in Electromagnetic Transients program. The calculated voltages from the circuit by Electromagnetic Transients program are in good agreement with the measured voltages. This shows that the method is simple and robust.

Simulation in Matlab/Simulink or LABVIEW of designed model of pyroelectric detector gives excellent possibilities of investigation that are difficult to realize by analytical methods. It is very important that the tests can be easily modified and the results are obtained quickly.

Opis:
The measurement of frequency characteristics, like magnitude and phase, related to a specific transfer function of DC–DC converters, can be a difficult task - especially when the measured signal approaches the boundary of a small-signal model validity (i.e. 1/3 of the switching frequency fS ). It is hard to find a paper where authors mention the measurement techniques they use to draw frequency characteristics. Meanwhile the presence of noise in the output signal does not enable to directly measure the gain and the phase shift between the input and output signals. In such situations additional analysis is required in order to achieve a reliable result. This paper contains a description of a few methods that can be used to analyse measured signals in order to determine the gain and the phase shift of a specific transfer function. They enable to verify mathematical models in a wide range of frequencies (up to 1/3 fS ). The methods use signals measured in the time domain and can be implemented in mathematical software such as Matlab or Scilab.

Opis:
The study investigates the impact of birefringence exhibited by the cavity material of a fiber-optic Fabry–Pérot interferometer on its transfer function. The theoretical approach to analyze the effect of birefringence in the cavity of a plane Fabry–Pérot interferometer is described. The case of high- and low-finesse interferometer is investigated. It is shown that introduction of a birefringent medium of optimized parameters can be used to increase the density of interference fringes in certain wavelength range – the feature can be used either for reduction of the cavity length in an interferometric sensor or operation with sources of narrower spectral characteristics.

Opis:
The positive and minimal realization problem for continuous-discrete linear single-input and single-outputs (SISO) systems is formulated. Two special case of the continuous-discrete systems are given. Method based on the state variable diagram for finding a positive and minimal realization of a given proper transfer function is proposed. Sufficient conditions for the existence of a positive minimal realization of a given proper transfer function of all-pole and all-zero systems are established. Two procedures for computation of a positive minimal realization are proposed and illustrated by a numerical examples.

Opis:
Since a few years ago, there is an increasing interest for utilization of transfer functions (TF) as a reliable method for diagnosing of mechanical faults in transformer structure. However, this paper aims to develop the application of TF method in order to evaluate the drying quality of active part during the manufacturing process of transformer. To reach this goal, the required measurements are carried out on 50 MVA 132 KV/33 KV power transformer when active part is placed in the drying chamber. Two different features extracted from the measured TFs are then used as the inputs to artificial neural network (ANN) to give an estimate for required time in drying process. Results show that this new represented method could well forecast the required time. The results obtained from this method are valid for all the transformers which have the same design.

Opis:
This paper analyses the performance of Differential Head-Related Transfer Function (DHRTF), an alternative transfer function for headphone-based virtual sound source positioning within a horizontal plane. This experimental one-channel function is used to reduce processing and avoid timbre affection while preserving signal features important for sound localisation. The use of positioning algorithm employing the DHRTF is compared to two other common positioning methods: amplitude panning and HRTF processing. Results of theoretical comparison and quality assessment of the methods by subjective listening tests are presented. The tests focus on distinctive aspects of the positioning methods: spatial impression, timbre affection, and loudness fluctuations. The results show that the DHRTF positioning method is applicable with very promising performance; it avoids perceptible channel coloration that occurs within the HRTF method, and it delivers spatial impression more successfully than the simple amplitude panning method.
