Virtual Machine (VM), called also machine simulator, is 3D computer model which is geometrically and functionally the same like real machine (CNC machine tool or robot). They are used mainly for different kind of syntax errors and collision detection in CNC programs. Whole simulation process is also called Virtual Machining. This kind of off-line programming require CAM software support to generate tool paths and transform them to machine commands. The most advanced virtual machining software gives more possibilities to influence machines behavior – it is not only simulation software. This article describe it based on Eureka virtual machining software.

Opis:
Despite several technical advances over the last decade, CNC controlled manufacturing still bases upon outdated paradigms: manufacturing data are generated and transferred along a heterogeneous and divided CAD/CAM/CNC data chain. The role of the NC controller is limited to the execution of tool paths generated beforehand and the possibility of online tool path adaptation is not planned in legacy NC controllers. In contrast, practical observations make this legacy approach quite inappropriate in an industrial framework. Significant geometrical variability is sometimes observed both prior and after milling in parts that belong to the same batch. In that context, the integration of online tool path adaptation strategies appears to be essential. In this paper, a methodology for correcting the tool path in real-time thanks to measurements provided by a laser scanner moving with the tool is introduced. The resulting local information is used to approximate the workpiece exact geometry by using a POD (Prosper Orthogonal Decomposition) snapshot technique and to adjust the path in accordance. This method has the great advantage of taking into consideration geometrical features such as curvature, twist but also additional parameters whose impact on the tool path is significant (unexpected initial setup of the part for example). This method has been implemented on the advanced CNC programming platform of the laboratory, which hosts in particular a high speed machining centre equipped with an open NC controller.

Opis:
Three-axis machines are limited in the production of geometrical features in powder-bed additive manufacturing processes. In case of overhangs, support material has to be added due to the nature of the process, which causes some disadvantages. Robot-based wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is able to fabricate overhangs without adding support material. Hence, build time, waste of material, and post-processing might be reduced considerably. In order to make full use of multi-axis advantages, slicing strategies are needed. To this end, the CAD (computer-aided design) model of the part to be built is first partitioned into sub-parts, and for each sub-part, an individual build direction is identified. Path planning for these sub-parts by slicing then enables to produce the parts. This study presents a heuristic method to deal with the decomposition of CAD models and build direction identification for sub-entities. The geometric data of two adjacent slices are analyzed to construct centroidal axes. These centroidal axes are used to navigate the slicing and building processes. A case study and experiments are presented to exemplify the algorithm.

Opis:
The article presents a comparison of three trochoidal paths: written by G-Code, generated using the overlays from the machine level, and generated using the CAD/CAM environment. The parameters determining the effectiveness of the process were: maximum achievable feed speed, surface roughness and waviness, cutting forces and cutting temperature when milling NC6 steel (50HRC) using a 10 mm cutter dimeter. The main measurement results include: an increase in the maximum feed speed value by almost 35% when using the A and C paths compared to the type B path and nearly a double increase in surface roughness when using the path generated using the CAD/CAM environment compared to the B path. The most important conclusions was that it is not always possible to machine with the recommended parameters by the tool manufacturer, especially when machining narrow grooves. It was proven that that the use of paths with the displacement described by arcs and straight lines as a trochoidal step over reduces the possibility of milling at high feed rate.

The purpose of the presented paper is to show how with the help of artificial Neural Network (NN) the prediction of milling tool-path strategies could be performed in order to determine which milling tool - path strategies or their sequences will yield the best results (i.e. the most appropriate ones) of free form surface machining, in accordance with a selected technological aim. Usually, the machining task could be completed successfully using different tool-path strategies or their sequences. They can all perform the machining task according to the demands but always only one of the all possible applied strategies is optimal in terms of the desired technological goal (surface quality in most cases). In the presented paper, the best possible surface quality of a machined surface was taken as the primary technological aim. Configuration of the applied Neural Network is presented and the whole procedure of determining the optimal tool-path sequence is shown through an example of a light switch mould. Verification of the machined surface quality, in relation to the average mean roughness Ra is also being performed and compared with the NN predicted results.

Opis:
Marine propellers are complex surfaces that are usually machined with a perfect roughness in order not to disturb the theoretical flow. Because this requirement is penalizing from a manufacturing point of view, the global objective of the study is to propose an approach in which the machining parameters are linked to functional properties of the blade in order to remove the polishing phase. To reach this objective, hydrodynamic data are used: streak lines, that are computed during the propeller design phase, characterize the fluid behavior at the close vicinity of the blade. Those lines, which are theoretically continuous at the leading edge, turn out to be discontinuous, due to the computing method. To be consistent with the fluid behavior as much as possible, the idea presented in the paper is to compose a continuous trajectory, especially at the leading edge, to mill the surface. Thus, an algorithm is developed to plan tool paths which are smoothed at leading edge using Bezier curves. Moreover, this algorithm allows to quantify the cusp height at the leading edge to avoid a drop in performance using criteria linked to the dynamical behavior of a five axis machine tool. In this work, a strategy is developed and enables multiaxial milling of a blade surface by using geometric and hydrodynamic data and by respecting the associated constraints.

This paper deals with an advanced modeling of the feed drives of a five axis machine tool within the context of High Speed Machining. The management of the multi axes as well as high velocities causes problems to the set machine tool – Numerical Controller throughout the trajectory execution process. As a result, many errors are introduced during machining all process long affecting the surface quality. The paper aims at modeling the feed drive dynamics during trajectory follow-up including the current, the velocity and position loops as well as the feed forward terms, which characterize classical drives on actual HSM machines. It concerns translational axes as well as rotary axes. A procedure of identification of the virtual axis model are detailed for three and five axis trajectories presenting various types of geometrical discontinuities.

Machine learning has been widely used in manufacturing, leading to significant advances in diverse problems, including the prediction of wear and remaining useful life (RUL) of machine tools. However, the data used in many cases correspond to simple and stable processes that differ from practical applications. In this work, a novel dataset consisting of eight cutting tools with complex tool paths is used. The time series of the tool paths, corresponding to the three-dimensional position of the cutting tool, are grouped according to their shape. Three unsupervised clustering techniques are applied, resulting in the identification of DBA-k-means as the most appropriate technique for this case. The clustering process helps to identify training and testing data with similar tool paths, which is then applied to build a simple two-feature prediction model with the same level of precision for RUL prediction as a more complex four-feature prediction model. This work demonstrates that by properly selecting the methodology and number of clusters, tool paths can be effectively classified, which can later be used in prediction problems in more complex settings.

This paper proposes a method of end milling of cycloidal gears using a five-axis computer analytical control (CNC) machine tool. Firstly, the basic principle of the five-axis end milling of cycloidal gears is introduced. The cutting characteristics of the ball-end and the flat-end cutters are analyzed. Secondly, the path planning method of the five-axis end milling of cycloidal gears is researched. A curvature matching method is used to check for local over-cut interference and a minimum distance method is used to check for global collision interference. These two interferences are avoided by calculating the feasible range of cutter orientations and adjusting the dips of cutter shafts. Tests of end milling of cycloidal gears are carried out using a ball-end cutter and a flat-end cutter, respectively. Finally, full tooth profile accuracy measurements are undertaken with an image-measuring instrument to assess the quality of cycloidal gears processed in this way. This study provides a theoretical basis for the improvement of the tooth profile accuracy and surface quality of cycloidal gears.

Today, Parallel Kinematic Machines tools (PKMs) appear in automotive and aeronautic industries. These machines allow a benefit of productivity due to their higher kinematics performances than Serial Kinematic Machines tools (SKMs). However, their machining accuracy is lower. Moreover, the compensation of the defects which penalizes the machined parts quality is difficult due to their anisotropic behaviour. Thus, this article deals with the development of methods improving the machined parts quality and the productivity. In order to improve parts quality, the static behaviour of the machine structure is considered with a model taking into account joints and legs compliances. Then, it allows determining a static workspace. About the productivity, the improvement of kinematics performances is performed through an optimization work of the non productive tool path between cutting operations. The computed tool path must verify a minimum time constraint and avoid collisions between the tool and the machined part. All the methods are illustrated with the PKM Tripteor X7 developed by PCI.

The overall objective of the ongoing work is to develop the computational environment HY DRO-PATH as a flexible tool for forecasting runoff from catchment areas for various hydrometeorological conditions while taking into account the information available on a real-time basis. Ensuring the model’s operational reliability and reducing the uncertainty of generated forecasts is accomplished through the adjustment of both the internal structure of the model and the spatial representation of the computational grid to the physiographical, hydrological and climatological characteristics of a given basin. The research focused on the development of methods for selecting the optimal model structure and parameters by analysing the results obtained for different model structures. This is achieved through the computational environment, in which it is possible to implement different types of hydrological rainfall-runoff models. These models have a unified system of data input, parameter optimisation rules, and procedures for result generation. The developed elements of the computational environment correspond to generation potential of models with a given structure and complexity. Furthermore, within the framework of HY DRO-PATH the following components were developed: an application programming interface (API), a data assimilation module, a module for computational representation of a real object, and a module for the estimation and optimisation of model parameters. The developed computational environment was applied to prepare a version of TOPO-Flex and perform hydrological validation of the model’s results. The hydrological validation was performed for selected flood events in the Bystrzyca Dusznicka subbasin of the Nysa Kłodzka River.

The assessment of dependence between time series is a common dilemma, which is often solved by the use of the Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Unfortunately, sometimes, the results may be highly misleading. In this paper, an alternative measure is presented. It is based on hidden Markov models and Viterbi paths. The proposed method is in no way universal but seems to provide quite an accurate image of the similarities between time series, by disclosing the periods of convergence and divergence. The usefulness of this new measure is verified by specially crafted examples and real‑life macroeconomic data. There are some definite advantages to this method: the weak assumptions of applicability, ease of interpretation of the results, possibility of easy generalization, and high effectiveness in assessing the dependence of different time series of an economic nature. It should not be treated as a substitute for the Pearson’s correlation, but rather as a complementary method of dependence measure.
