Opis:
Gearboxes are one of the most important and widely exposed to different types of faults in machines. Therefore, manufacturers and researchers have made significant efforts to develop different fault detection and diagnostic approaches for gearboxes. However, many research foundations, such as universities, are currently working on developing different gearbox test rigs to understand the failure mechanisms in gearboxes. As a result, in this article, a gearbox testing rig was proposed and fabricated to evaluate gear performance under lowspeed working conditions. It describes the primary mechanical apparatus and the measurement tools used during the experimental analysis of a multistage gearbox transmission system. The data-gathering equipment used to acquire the observed vibration data is also discussed. LabVIEW software was used to build a data acquisition platform using an accelerometer and a NI DAQ device. Then different vibration tests were conducted under different operating conditions, when the gearbox was healthy and then faulty, on this test rig, and the gathered vibration data were analyzed based on time domain signal analysis. The preliminary results are promising and open the horizon for simulating different gearbox test scenarios.

Opis:
Based on real-time multi-domain communication signal analysis architecture, a high-efficiency blind carrier frequency estimation algorithm using the power spectrum symmetry of the measured modulated signal is presented. The proposed algorithm, which utilizes the moving averaged power spectrum achieved by the realtime spectrum analysis, iteratively identifies the carrier frequency in according to the power difference between the upper sideband and lower sideband, which is defined and revised by the estimated carrier frequency in each iteration. When the power difference of the two sidebands converges to the preset threshold, the carrier frequency can be obtained. For the modulation analysis, the measured signal can be coarsely compensated by the estimated result, and the residual carrier frequency error is eliminated by a following carrier synchronization loop. Compared with previous works, owing to the moving averaged power spectrum normalization and the smart iterative step variation mechanism for the two sidebands definition, the carrier frequency estimation accuracy and speed can be significantly improved without increasing the computational effort. Experimental results are included to demonstrate the outstanding performance of the proposed algorithm.

The issue of measuring power quality parameters and the most important analyses of disturbances occurring in the power network are presented in the paper. These subjects are developed by a power quality and signal analysis group, working at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatic Control and Informatics. The basic classification of signal analysis methods is given in the paper (Fig. 1). Moreover, the methods currently used in power quality measurement systems are described. In most cases the analyses are based on Fourier Transformation [2-4]. The methods, due to 10-cycles measurement period, cause significant computational errors in case of existence of short duration harmonics in a signal. Moreover, very precise synchronization of the sampling frequency and real power wave-form frequency is needed. Therefore other kinds of analyses in power quality measurement systems are currently investigated. The alternative to Fourier Transformation methods allowing precise estimation of the signal spectrum is Prony analysis [5]. The analysis enables extracting frequency components on the basis of a much shorter measurement window than FFT [6-10]. For localizing the power disturbances, linear (Short-Time Fourier analysis STFT, Gabor Transform GT [12, 13], Wavelet Transform [14, 15, 16]) and bilinear (Wigner-Ville WVD, Pseudo-WVD [17,18]) time-frequency analyses are performed. The combination of both groups of methods (Gabor-Wigner Transform GWT [19,20]) is also presented in the paper. Application of image processing algorithms [21, 22] is also considered in the paper.

The work presents the results of experimental study on the possibilities of determining the source of an ultrasonic signal in two-dimensional space (distance, horizontal angle). During the research the team used a self-constructed linear array of MEMS microphones. Knowledge in the field of sonar systems was utilized to analyse and design a location system based on a microphone array. Using the above mentioned transducers and broadband ultrasound sources allows a quantitative comparison of estimation of the location of an ultrasonic wave source with the use of broadband modulated signals (modelled on bats’ echolocation signals) to be performed. During the laboratory research the team used various signal processing algorithms, which made it possible to select an optimal processing strategy, where the sending signal is known.

Opis:
In this paper, the problem of aliasing and folding effects in spectrum of sampled signals in view of Information Theory is discussed. To this end, the information content of deterministic continuous time signals, which are continuous functions, is formulated first. Then, this notion is extended to the sampled versions of these signals. In connection with it, new signal objects that are partly functions but partly not are introduced. It is shown that they allow to interpret correctly what the Whittaker–Shannon reconstruction formula in fact does. With help of this tool, the spectrum of the sampled signal is correctly calculated. The result achieved demonstrates that no aliasing and folding effects occur in the latter. Finally, it is shown that a Banach–Tarski-like paradox can be observed on the occasion of signal sampling.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between time-frequency, time and frequency measures when considering various upper extremity positions below the level of the shoulder and in trapezius as well as deltoideus muscles. During the experiment, 15 subjects performed a task that involved screwing and unscrewing a screw cap on a board in six different locations, i.e., there were six upper extremity positions. Variables were calculated in the time, frequency and time-frequency domains on a recorded EMG signal. The results showed that parameters analyzed in the time-frequency domain were more sensitive to changes in position than parameters analyzed in the frequency domain.

One of the most important subsystems of the vehicles and machines operating currently in industry and transportation are the rotating subsystems. During the subsystems operation, due to the forcing factors influence, the technical state of them is changing and the failure can occur. In order to avoid such a situation the technical state should be identified online. To do this the analysis of the subsystems vibrations is performed. The identified technical state should be considered in a context of the ability and different inability states. Therefore, the first step of the diagnostic procedure is the ability and different inability states identification. In the article, it is proposed to accomplish this goal by the vibrations analysis in time domain. The described research started with the vibration signals acquisition using the experimental stand. In this way, the vibration signals for ability and different inability states were obtained. Afterwards, the signals were divided into learning and testing data sets. For each signal from learning data set, several characteristics were calculated, and they selected the most significant among them. Using the selected characteristics, the signals from the testing data set were analysed. Thanks to it, the testing vibrations signals were counted among the signals collected on the rotating subsystem operating in ability or selected inability state. The result of the performed studies and the accuracy of the technical state of the tested system identification can be found at the end of the article.

Opis:
A new supervised classification algorithm of a heavily distorted pattern (shape) obtained from noisy observations of nonstationary signals is proposed in the paper. Based on the Gabor transform of 1-D non-stationary signals, 2-D shapes of signals are formulated and the classification formula is developed using the pattern matching idea, which is the simplest case of a pattern recognition task. In the pattern matching problem, where a set of known patterns creates predefined classes, classification relies on assigning the examined pattern to one of the classes. Classical formulation of a Bayes decision rule requires a priori knowledge about statistical features characterising each class, which are rarely known in practice. In the proposed algorithm, the necessity of the statistical approach is avoided, especially since the probability distribution of noise is unknown. In the algorithm, the concept of discriminant functions, represented by Frobenius inner products, is used. The classification rule relies on the choice of the class corresponding to the max discriminant function. Computer simulation results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new classification algorithm. It is shown that the proposed approach is able to correctly classify signals which are embedded in noise with a very low SNR ratio. One of the goals here is to develop a pattern recognition algorithm as the best possible way to automatically make decisions. All simulations have been performed in Matlab. The proposed algorithm can be applied to non-stationary frequency modulated signal classification and non-stationary signal recognition.

Opis:
The paper presents new approach to problem of signal averaging which is commonly used to extract a useful signal distorted by a noise. The averaging is especially useful for biomedical signal such as ECG signal, where the spectra of the signal and noise significantly overlap. In reality can be observed variability of noise power from cycle to cycle which is motivation for using methods of weighted averaging. Performance of the new method, based on partition of input set in time domain and criterion function minimization, is experimentally compared with the traditional averaging by using arithmetic mean, weighted averaging method based on empirical Bayesian approach and weighted averaging method based on criterion function minimization.

In this paper, the effect of the resolution of an analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) on the accuracy of timedomain low-frequency electrical impedance spectroscopy is examined. For the first time, we demonstrated that different wideband stimuli signals used for impedance spectroscopy have different sensitivities to the resolution of ADC used in impedance spectroscopy systems. We also proposed Ramp and Half-Gaussian signals as new wideband stimulating signals for EIS. The effect of ADC resolution was studied for Sinc, Gaussian, Half-Gaussian, and Ramp excitation signals using both simulation and experiments. We found that Ramp and Half-Gaussian signals have the best performance, especially at low frequencies. Based on the results, a wideband electrical impedance spectroscopy circuit was implemented with a high accuracy at frequencies bellow 10 Hz.

Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a serious occupational related health problem worldwide. The A-wave impulse noise could cause severe hearing loss, and characteristics of such kind of impulse noise in the joint time-frequency (T-F) domain are critical for evaluation of auditory hazard level. This study focuses on the analysis of A-wave impulse noise in the T-F domain using continual wavelet transforms. Three different wavelets, referring to Morlet, Mexican hat, and Meyer wavelets, were investigated and compared based on theoretical analysis and applications to experimental generated A-wave impulse noise signals. The underlying theory of continuous wavelet transform was given and the temporal and spectral resolutions were theoretically analyzed. The main results showed that the Mexican hat wavelet demonstrated significant advantages over the Morlet and Meyer wavelets for the characterization and analysis of the A-wave impulse noise. The results of this study provide useful information for applying wavelet transform on signal processing of the A-wave impulse noise.

This paper presents the issues concerning interlaboratory comparisons in time and frequency domain organized by the Central Office of Measures [5, 6, 7]. A short description of the purpose of such comparisons is presented in the first section. The second section contains description of the previous comparisons with a HS-1000 stopwatch as a portable standard which, however, was not stable long-term enough and was not resistant to influence of outside temperature (Fig. 1). In Section 3, there is presented a comparison of 2011 with a new model of the portable standard – a generator with a microprocessor signal simulator of the electronic watch stepper motor (Fig. 2 and 3) whose internal control system and motor stepper signal simulator were made in GUM. This standard is characterized by small dependence of the relative frequency deviation on changes of the outside temperature and simulates three detuning signals with a frequency of about 1 Hz. The analysis of the comparison results of 2011 (Section 4) was focused on the causes of a relatively large discrepancy between the results obtained by participants and the actual (correct) values of the simulated detuned signals in some cases. It was found that the characteristics of the work of the control instruments (clock testers) were critical and needed to be adequately taken into account in estimation of the measurement uncertainty. This comparison helped the participants to better understand the work of the clock testers and allowed them to verify and improve procedures of evaluation of the measurement results obtained with use of this type of equipment.
