The forensic thriller has emerged as a significant subgenre of crime fiction that depicts the work of medical examiners, coroners, forensic pathologists, and anthropologists who analyze scientific evidence. Forensic investigators do not engage directly in pursuing the criminal; instead, they interpret the physical evidence collected from the victim's body and the crime scene. The popularity of forensic fiction, film, and TV series has created the general assumption that criminalistics has become a routine police procedure. This article presents Karin Slaughter's novel Blindsighted as an example of the Southern forensic thriller. The American writer Karin Slaughter is the author of crime stories and thrillers set in the American South. Her Grant County series consists of six crime novels, beginning with Blindsighted and followed by Kisscut, A Faint Cold Fear, Indelible, Faithless, and Beyond Reach. The essay introduces the main qualities of a forensic thriller and highlights the novel's generic characteristics. Then, Blindsighted is analyzed within the paradigm of Southern regional literature, with its distinctive qualities and religious imagery.
Thriller medyczny stanowi podgatunek kryminału przedstawiający pracę lekarzy sądowych, koronerów, patologów i antropologów, analizujących dowody naukowe. Śledczy sądowi nie włączają się bezpośrednio w ściganie przestępców, a jedynie badają dowody zebrane z ciał ofiar i miejsc zbrodni. Popularność powieści, filmów i seriali z gatunku thrillera medycznego wpłynęła na przekonanie o stosowaniu kryminalistyki w rutynowych procedurach policyjnych. Niniejszy artykuł analizuje powieść Zaślepienie (2002), autorstwa Karin Slaughter, jako przykład regionalnego thrillera medycznego. Pisarka amerykańska Karin Slaughter jest autorką kryminałów i thrillerów, których miejscem akcji jest amerykańskie Południe. Seria Hrabstwo Grant składa się z sześciu powieści: Zaślepienie, Płytkie nacięcie, Zimny strach, Fatum, Niewierny, Przywilej skóry. Artykuł przedstawia charakterystykę thrillera medycznego i podkreśla przynależność gatunkową powieści Zaślepienie. Następnie analizuje powieść w kontekście specyfiki literatury regionalnej amerykańskiego Południa.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to prove that the narrative of the game The Path reverses the main properties of the fairy tale distinguished by the Russian structuralist Vladimir Propp. This results in the transformation of the game story’s genre from the fairy tale into that of the psychological thriller. The Russian scholar’s theory emphasises the role of characters of the narrative and their actions, which are significant components of the literary story, as well as the one that is told in the computer game. The study proves that the reversal of the functions and roles of dramatis personae in the game’s narrative results in the development of the elements characteristic for the psychological thriller in the game. The fact that this shift is fluent is an evidence that those two genres, although dissonant, have many common elements. The fairy tale and thriller are complementary – the latter reveals the hidden and suppressed aspects of the former.
Celem artykułu jest próba analizy procesu transformacji baśni w thriller psychologiczny w grze komputerowej The Path. Punkt wyjścia do rozważań stanowi teoria strukturalna Vladimira Proppa, który poddał badaniom tradycyjne baśni, wyodrębniając ich elementy wspólne, takie jak funkcje i role postaci. Rosyjski strukturalista w swojej teorii jako kluczowe elementy opowieści uwypukla bohaterów i ich działania, istotne nie tylko z punktu widzenia teoretyków literatury, ale również badaczy podejmujących refleksję nad grami komputerowymi. Studium wykazuje, że funkcje i role bohaterów tradycyjnych baśni wyróżnione przez Proppa zostają w The Path zdeformowane: gra „schodzi” z wyznaczonej przez strukturę baśni ścieżki, tworząc lukę w gatunkowej przestrzeni, która zostaje wypełniona elementami właściwymi dla thrillera psychologicznego. Odwrócenie i deformacja funkcji oraz roli postaci baśniowych skutkuje przeobrażeniem opowiedzianej w grze historii w thriller. Owo przeobrażenie wydaje się niezwykle płynne dlatego, że baśń i thriller psychologiczny nie są całkowicie odmiennymi, wykluczającymi się gatunkami; przeciwnie – uzupełniają się wzajemnie. Drugi pokazuje i dopowiada to, co pierwszy przemilcza lub zataja.

This article is an attempt to answer the question whether, in the specific conditions in which thecinematography of the Soviet Union was created and developed, we can talk about the productionof thrillers. The notion of the thriller is considered and attention is paid to the problem of the definitionof the term itself and the fact that some researchers do not treat the thriller as a genre at all.The thriller, associated by the Soviet decision-makers with Western culture (and thus also American),was perceived as a bourgeois creation, which made it an undesirable genre in the Soviet Union.Nevertheless, for many years immediately after the end of World War II and at the very end of theexistence of the historical empire, a series of films were created and they could be called thrillers inthe general modern sense of the word. Titles of Soviet films created in the years 1947–1991 havebeen chosen from the rich resources of cinematography of our eastern neighbours. At the cinemahistorian’s workshop, there were both images of well-known and popular Soviet directors(Boris Barnet, Stanisław Goworouchin, Eldar Riazanow), as well as slightly less known personalities,(Gieorgij Nikulin, Boris Durow).

A Polish medical thriller is a response to the American prototype. It seems that the native authors are trying to work out new determinants of the species, which will stand up to Polish reality. However, writers do not overlook topics that are important from a medical thriller point of view, such as the moral choices of doctors, the uncontrolled progress of science and technology. The new species on Polish soil did not manage to be protected by literary themes taken from American medical thrillers. Polish medical thrillers are forms of hybrids. Writers scooping out elements of the crime, psychological novels, teenage novels, or folklore literature are woven into the American medical thriller convention.Not all the novels discussed here can be called medical thrillers. Doktor śmierć of Jacek Caba appears closest to the American prototype. The writer, like American medical thriller authors, is a doctor and more credible in his narrative, based on his knowledge and experience.

Reguły konstrukcyjne literatury kryminalnej doczekały się licznych opisów, opracowań i rekapitulacji. Dzisiejszy renesans tej literatury wywołuje jednak potrzebę nowych odczytań i, zwłaszcza że odbywa się w atmosferze postmodernistycznej pobłażliwości dla korzystania z popularnych schematów fabularnych i konstrukcyjnych, mieszania kategorii gatunkowych oraz predylekcji do heterogenizacji dyskursów, zmusza do zastanowienia się nad przyczynami atrakcyjności thrillera jako formy genologicznej, po którą nierzadko sięgają pisarze, by zaprezentować czytelnikowi fikcjonalną wypowiedź „pogłębioną” o diagnozowanie rozmaitych mankamentów nowoczesnego świata. W literaturze czeskiej prozaicy Roman Ludva i Miloš Urban, zainspirowani nie tylko Ecowsko-Brownowską grą z utartymi rozwiązaniami fabularnymi, lecz także tradycją rodzimą (opowiadaniami dziewiętnastowiecznego neoromantyka, Jakuba Arbesa), wpisują szablony „dreszczowca” w szeroko zakrojoną dyskusję na temat współczesnej kondycji sztuki i jednocześnie – dzięki strategii „wzmożonej” intersemiotyczności – nadają swym narracjom wymiar autotematyczny.
The structural parameters for crime literature have been the subject of numerous overviews, critical essays, and recapitulations. Yet the renaissance of this literature unfolding today calls for new interpretations. To be more specific, this renaissance takes place in a climate of postmodern penchants for popular narrative and structural schemas, a blending of genre categories, and a predilection for heterogeneous discourses. This very fact should compel us to reflect on the factors contributing to the thriller’s appeal as a genre form that writers so often evoke to provide the reader with a fictional and “deep” statement on the various deficits of the contemporary world.  In Czech literature, prose writers such as Roman Ludva and Miloš Urban have taken cues from Umberto Eco and Dan Brown’s tendencies to experiment with well-worn narrative strategies, as well as their local tradition (the tales of the 19th-century neoromantic Jakub Arbes). Following suit, Ludva and Urban embed the templates of the thriller in a broadly organized interrogation of the contemporary condition of art. Simultaneously, using the strategy of “amplified” intersemiosis, they impart an autothematic dimension to their narratives.

Rola pielęgniarki w literaturze zdaje się marginalizowana. Pielęgniarki stanowią margines, zwłaszcza w thrillerach medycznych, w których szpitalny świat zdominowany jest przez mężczyzn. Bohaterowie książek chociażby Robina Cooka nazywają pielęgniarki, nieco z pogardą, personelem niższego szczebla, upodrzędniając je w stosunku do lekarzy. Przeniesienie optyki z lekarzy na pielęgniarki podnosi ważną kwestię, jaką są role społeczne i stereotypy ugruntowywane od lat również przez literaturę. Ten schemat starają się łamać bohaterki Siostrzyczek Michaela Palmera oraz protagonistka powieści Robina Cooka Marker. Niemniej jednak należy pamiętać, iż te dwa jednostkowe przykłady zmiany optyki i oddanie głosu pielęgniarkom stanowią margines thrillerów medycznych (zarówno polskich, jak i amerykańskich), w których niepodzielnie rządzą męscy bohaterowie.
The nurse’s role in literature seems to be marginalised. Nurses constitute a margin, especially in medical thrillers, in which men dominate the hospital world. The books’ characters, such as Robin Cook’s, call the nurses “the lower-level staff”. The transfer of optics from men-doctors to women‑nurses raises an important issue of social roles and stereotypes that has been grounded in literature for years. The heroines of Michael Palmer’s Little Sisters and the protagonist of Marker by Robin Cook break the inferiority of nurses to male medical staff pattern. Nevertheless, one should remember that these two particular examples of changing the optics, allowing nurses to speak their own words, are the margin of medical thrillers (both Polish and American), in which men’s characters rule.

Thriller is considered to be a subgenre of criminal fiction, in which the most significant role is played by fast-paced action, suspense, spectacular events. In case of so called international and political thrillers it should also be mentioned that their authors construct their plots around the problems such as global conflicts, international conspiracy, terrorism, the development of nuclear weapon. However, problems commonly mentioned by many authors of other subgenres of criminal fiction, are also present in the novels classified as thrillers. The collapse of well-being society, unstable interpersonal relationships, mental problems of an individual, childhood traumas are therefore often mentioned by the writers, although they do not usually constitute main subjects of the novels. The article concentrates on some examples from international and political thrillers, in which such issues seem to be equally important, written by the most popular Finnish authors of this particular genre, namely Ilkka Remes and Taavi Soininvaara
