In this paper, a study of the lightning phenomenon and its harmful effect on Aqaba Thermal Power Station (ATPS), located in the south-western border of Jordan, is presented using the Electromagnetic Transients Program – Alternative Transients Program (EMTPATP). This study has been arisen due to an installation need of appropriate lightning arresters (LAs) for the 15/410 kV step-up transformers of the ATPS to eliminate the destructive effect of lightning. The simulation is carried out for two cases, once without using LAs and once more with using them. Two scenarios are applied for each of these cases, once when lightning strikes the primary side of the transformer and once more when it strikes the secondary side. The results obtained by the simulation indicate the necessity of LAs installation. This study, with using the EMTP-ATP program, is done for the first time with additional details that help researchers, designers, and engineers to get a broad overview of the ATPS in order to protect it against lightning.

The objective of the study reported in this paper was to determine the effect of structure on thermal power of cast-iron heat exchangers which in this case were furnace chambers constituting the main component of household fireplace-based heating systems and known commonly as fireplace inserts. For the purpose of relevant tests, plate-shaped castings were prepared of gray iron with flake graphite in pearlitic matrix (the material used to date typically for fireplace inserts) as well as similar castings of gray cast iron with vermicular graphite in pearlitic, ferritic-pearlitic, and ferritic matrix. For all the cast iron variants of different structures (graphite precipitate shapes and matrix type), calorimetric measurements were carried out consisting in determining the heat power which is quantity representing the rate of heat transfer to the ambient environment. It has been found that the value of the observed heat power was affected by both the shape of graphite precipitates and the type of alloy matrix. Higher thermal power values characterize plate castings of gray iron with vermicular graphite compared to plates cast of the flake graphite gray iron. In case of plates made of gray cast iron with vermicular graphite, the highest values of thermal power were observed for castings made of iron with ferritic matrix.

The purpose of the article was to estimate the thermal power of groundwater intakes of the Kielce district within the sheets of hydrogeological maps with the serial numbers MHP 813-817, MHP 850-851, and to indicate in this area prospective areas for the development of low-temperature geothermal energy supported by water/water heat pumps. Based on the calculations on the basis of 147 groundwater intakes, it was determined that the estimated values of thermal power resources are in the range of 3.47 kW to 5757.34 kW. The created map of the low-temperature geothermal potential for groundwater intakes indicates the towns of Bodzentyn, Morawica and the villages of Piekoszów, Wolica and the area around the village of Górno as prospective areas.

Pulverizing system is an important part in the clean and efficient utilization of coal in thermal power plant, and the optimal control of the system is an important way to achieve this goal. This paper presents a stair-like multivariable generalized predictive control scheme for a pulverizing system. This control scheme focuses on the problem of predictive control algorithm in practical application, and integrates the feedforward experience in traditional control schemes of pulverizing system. Simulation results showed that the scheme are able to realize the decoupling control of the pulverizing system, avoid the problem of matrix inversion, reduce the amount of calculation, and has certain engineering application value.

This paper presents the results of developing a methodology for assessing and predicting the technical condition of boiler plants and steam turbines. The proposed method is based on generalized experimental data on failures to predict the damage of the principal elements and components of thermal power plants by Monte-Carlo simulation. The proposed method considers the complexity of technological processes, turnaround time, failure rate, and condition of the residual metal life. It allows developing approaches to assessing each element’s safety to obtain a reliable and representative sample of failure statistics to reliability assessment of boilers and steam turbines of thermal power plants. According to the results, the probability of failure operation of steam boilers and turbines is 0.037 in the 100 MW conditions. The obtained results can be used to create predictive models that provide approaches to prolonging the operational state of elements of boiler plants and steam turbines of thermal power plants. It can be used in the implementation of projects of digital energy systems for monitoring and diagnostics of the main power equipment of thermal power plants.

The electricity production by combustion of organic fuels, especially coal, increases the atmospheric CO2 content, which contributes to global warming. The greenhouse gas emissions by the power production industry may be reduced by the application of CO2 capture and storage systems, but it remarkably decreases the thermal power plant (TPP) efficiency because of the considerable increase of the auxiliary electricity requirements. This paper describes the thermodynamic analysis of a combined cycle TPP with coal gasification and preliminary carbon dioxide capture from the syngas. Utilization of the heat produced in the fuel preparation increases the TPP net efficiency from 42.3% to 47.2%. Moreover, the analysis included the combined cycle power plant with coal gasification and the CO2 capture from the heat recovery steam generator exhaust gas, and the oxy-fuel combustion power cycle with coal gasification. The coal-fired combined cycle power plant efficiency with the preliminary CO2 capture from syngas is 0.6% higher than that of the CO2 capture after combustion and 9.9% higher than that with the oxy-fuel combustion and further CO2 capture. The specific CO2 emissions are equal to 103 g/kWh for the case of CO2 capture from syngas, 90 g/kWh for the case of CO2 capture from the exhaust gas and 9 g/kWh for the case of oxy-fuel combustion.

The paper presents the results of calorimetric tests of segment elements of fireplace inserts. The aim of the work was to optimize their thermal power by replacing the previously used gray cast iron with flake graphite with gray iron with vermicular graphite and replacing the existing geometry of the heat transfer surface with a more developed one. It turned out that the thermal power of the test segments made of cast iron with vermicular graphite was higher compared to the segments of the same shape made of gray cast iron with flake graphite. It was found that the use of segments made of vermicular cast iron with a ferritic matrix allowed for an increase in the thermal power value by dozen percent, compared to segments of the same shape made of vermicular cast iron with a pearlitic matrix. The test results showed that the thermal power of the test segments depends on the variant of the development of both the heat receiving surface and the heat giving off surface. The highest value of the thermal power was obtained when ribbing in the form of a lattice was used on both of these surfaces, and the lowest when using flat surfaces.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań eksperymentalnych prototypowego, powietrznego kolektora słonecznego. Badania przeprowadzono w warunkach laboratoryjnych. Ich celem było wyznaczenie wpływu natężenia promieniowania na przyrost temperatury powietrza oraz prędkość przepływu powietrza (na skutek ruchów konwekcyjnych). W efekcie pomiarów wyznaczono natężenie przepływu powietrza oraz moc cieplną kolektora. Pionierskie rozwiązanie konstrukcyjne jak i wyniki badań będą stanowiły punkt odniesienia dla wyników badań innych konstrukcji.
The results of experimental investigations of the prototype flat air solar collector are presented in this paper. The collector consists of an aluminum casing with dimensions 1.04 m (width) x 2.08 m (height) x 0.18 m (thickness). The air inlet to the collector has an inlet channel with diameter, din, of 110 mm and a length of 0.5 m. The air outlet channel has an internal diameter, dout, 130 mm and a length of 0.5 m. The prototype solar air collector has a cover made of a cellular polycarbonate with a thickness of 5 mm and in brown color. The study was performed on a laboratory set-up. The collector worked under conditions of natural convection. The tests were performed for a range of irradiance I = 0 - 325 W/m2. The absorber surface temperature variations, air temperature increase and the collector thermal power were determined. It was found that at maximum irradiation, the air velocity was w = 1 m/s, volume flow rate of air = 28 m3/h, and the corresponding heat transfer rate was Q = 270 W.

Artykuł dotyczy górniczej sprężarkowej chłodziarki powietrza. Rozważono jej pracę zarówno z wewnętrznym regeneracyjnym wymiennikiem ciepła (dochładzaczem), jak i bez tego wymiennika. Podano równania, z których wyznaczyć można moce cieplne parownika, skraplacza i dochładzacza chłodziarki. Założono skupiony charakter wszystkich elementów chłodziarki (oprócz wymienionych, także sprężarki i zaworu rozprężnego). W przypadku chłodziarki z dochładzaczem otrzymano układ złożony z 12 równań algebraicznych, w którym niewiadomymi, oprócz mocy cieplnych trzech wspomnianych wymienników, są temperatura i wilgotność powietrza schłodzonego, temperatura wody za skraplaczem i temperatura czynnika chłodniczego w pięciu charakterystycznych punktach jego obiegu oraz stopień suchości czynnika na wlocie parownika. W przypadku chłodziarki bez dochładzacza układ składa się z dziewięciu równań o tych samych, co poprzednio, niewiadomych, z wyjątkiem trzech dotyczących dochładzacza.
This article applies to mine compression refrigerator of air. In this article, work of refrigerator with or without inner regenerative heat exchanger (subcooler) is considered. The equations are given, from which thermal powers of evaporator, condenser and subcooler of refrigerator are determined. Focused character of all elements of refrigerator is assumed (expect specified, compressor and expansion valve also). For refrigerator with subcooler, system compound with 12 algebraic equations is received, in which unknowns are: temperature and humidity of cooled air, temperature of water after the condenser and temperature of refrigerant in five characteristic points of its circulation and ariolity degree of refrigerant of evaporator's inlet. For refrigerator without subcooler, the system is composed of 9 equations with the same as before unknowns, with the exception of 3 equations refer to subcooler.

In this paper, characterization of fly ashes obtained from the Yatagan Thermal Power plant, Mugla, Turkey was performed in order to determine their radioactive element contents, especially uranium and thorium. The representative fly ash samples were subjected to hydrochloric acid (HCl) leaching considering solid concentration, acid dosage, leaching time and temperature in order to reach certain uranium and thorium recoveries. The obtained results showed that the optimum conditions for leaching tests were: 30% solid concentration, 2.36 mmol/dm3 HCl addition, 240 min leaching time and 40 oC temperature. Dissolution efficiencies for uranium and thorium from the Yatagan Thermal Power Plant fly ashes were calculated as 90.12 and 81.18%, respectively.

Condition monitoring is technique used to monitor the condition of an equipment or machinery without interrupting it working. Condition monitoring techniques are carried out when the machine is in operation. Most widely used condition monitoring techniques include vibration monitoring, motor current signature analysis, noise monitoring and wear debris analysis. Vibration monitoring detects the presence of unbalanced forces generated due to misalignment, damaged bearing, electrical defects and resonance. Motor current signature analysis is used to determine the defects in motor by analyzing the spectrum generated by the tongue tester. Noise monitoring is performed with the help of acoustic noise meter and wear debris is done to determine the contamination level of lubrication oil in various engines. These techniques are found to be highly efficient in determining the defects of the systems like pump at an early stage. A detailed study on these condition monitoring techniques has been carried out in this paper and also the methods for analysis of the results obtained from these tests are also discussed.

This research article contributes to the challenge of global warming by presenting the approach of the use of green hydrogen to reduce greenhouse gases. It shows that CO2 emissions can be significantly reduced in thermal power plants by replacing natural gas with green hydrogen as a fuel. This work presents the techno-economic study of the energy transition of a 12 MW thermal power plant based on green hydrogen. The presented study is based on the energy consumption of Nigeria, 73% of which is covered by natural gas thermal power plants. The obtained results show that the cost of this transition is ca. 17 million dollars (USD) for a reduction of 114 tCO2 per plant with a return on investment between 4-5 years. In addition, through modeling and numerical simulation, this article shows that estimated return on investment can be shortened by using the thermal power resulting from the turbine, through industrial use.

Jednym z najważniejszych zagadnień dotyczących środowiska pracy jest identyfikacja i analiza zagrożeń. Zagrożenia określamy na podstawie pomiaru częstości i ilości różnorodnych czynników występujących w środowisku pracy. Pracodawca wskazuje czynniki szkodliwe po przeprowadzeniu rozpoznania źródeł emisji oraz warunków wykonywania pracy, które mają wpływ na poziom stężeń lub natężeń tych czynników lub na poziom narażenia na oddziaływanie tychże. W elektrowniach cieplnych produkujących energię elektryczną z paliw kopalnych (węgiel) prowadzi się badania i pomiary praktycznie większości czynników z grup czynników fizycznych i chemicznych, na które może być narażony pracownik w środowisku pracy. W artykule przedstawiono identyfikację zagrożeń w elektrowni cieplnej i dokonano ich analizy z uwzględnieniem metod eliminacji tych zagrożeń.
One of the most essential issue regarding work environment is identification and analysis of hazards. Hazards are defined based on measurement of frequency and number of various factors occurring at the work environment. The employer specifies harmful factors after recognizing sources of emission and work conditions, which influence levels of concentrations or intensity of the mentioned factors, or level of exposure to the mentioned factors. Tests and measurements of practically all physical and chemical factors, to which the worker at the work environment may be exposed, are carried out in thermal power plants which generate electric energy of fossil fuels (coal). The article covers identification of hazards at the thermal power plant and their analysis considering methods of their elimination.
