Opis:
In March 2011 Japan experienced a series of disasters starting from a magnitude 9 earthquake, followed by a devastating tsunami and hydrogen explosion at the Fukushima nuclear plant as a consequence of the damage and failure of the cooling system incurred from the tsunami wave. This triple severe impact crippled Japanese people living in the area up to 20 km from the damaged plant who were forcibly evacuated, many of them forsaking their hometowns forever. As the Chernobyl accident demonstrated before, we cannot fully embrace the nuclear power. It would seem natural that Japan, being the only country that experienced destruction caused by the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, would be entirely avoiding the use of nuclear power. Up until now, nuclear power was thought to be a clean and safe source of energy while potential consequences of an accident were played down. Too bad, the last earthquake and tsunami pierced the veil of that belief. Despite the fact that one year has passed since the explosion and the nuclear contamination, the crisis continues while the area in the radius of 20 km from the former Fukushima nuclear power plant is a collection of ghost towns. For the politicians, nuclear power is a blessing, because it provides cheap energy for the economy and creates jobs. On the other hand it is just too dangerous and it is inconceivable to sacrifice the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands for the benefits of so few. Although the benefits for the economy are undisputed, I don’t think we need nuclear power anymore. In this essay, I would like to share my vision of a Japan without nuclear power referring to the predictions of Martin Heidegger and the Japanese physicist Jinsaburo Takagi.

It is demonstrated that ‘Eurasianism’ as an interdisciplinary scientific doctrine and an object-focused area of geographical social science is at its root, generally complementary to the methodology of Russian (Soviet) socio-economic (human) geography, and corresponds to its research tradition. The geo-economic, geopolitical and geo-cultural transformation of the post-Soviet ‘Eurasian space’ is analysed. The geo-concept of a multipolar ‘Mega-Eurasia’is proposed and justified. It is emphasised that the effective participation of Russia as one of the dominants of the Eurasian space is associated with the non-admission of an extremely undesirable, harmful scenario for Russia as well as of its possible marginalisation and limitation to the flimsy framework of the ‘Russian world’. A hypothetically possible commitment to only one of the existing global ‘power centres’ is also considered to be a losing one.

Beyond the Garden: On the Erotic in the Vision of the Middle English Pearl

Opis:
The Middle English Pearl is known for its mixture of genres, moods and various discourses. The textual journey the readers of the poem embark on is a long and demanding one, leading from elegiac lamentations and the erotic outbursts of courtly love to theological debates and apocalyptic visions. The heterogeneity of the poem has often prompted critics to overlook the continuity of the erotic mode in Pearl which emerges already in the poem’s first stanza. While it is true that throughout the dream vision the language of the text never eroticizes the relationship between the Dreamer and the Pearl Maiden to the extent that it does in the opening lines, the article argues that eroticism actually underlies the entire structure of the vision proper. Taking recourse to Roland Barthes’s distinction between the erotic and the sexual to explain the exact nature of the bond which connects the two characters, the argument posits eroticism as an expression of somatic longing; a careful analysis of Pearl through this prism provides a number of ironic insights into the mutual interactions between the Dreamer and the Maiden and highlights the poignancy of their inability to understand each other. Further conclusions are also drawn from comparing Pearl with a number of Chaucerian dream visions. Tracing the erotic in both its overt and covert forms and following its transformations in the course of the narrative, the article outlines the poet’s creative use of the mechanics of the dream vision, an increasingly popular genre in the period when the poem was written.

Opis:
This article presents an analysis of forced vibrations of a homogeneous cantilever beam using a vision method. Based on measurements, displacements of defined beam points have been determined as a function of time in directions perpendicular to and along the beam axis together with the trajectory of these points in the plane of the beam transverse vibrations. A model describing the displacement of the beam with a moving holder (kinematic excitation) is presented along with formulas defining motion of points in the plane of the beam transverse vibrations, which have been verified experimentally by recording beam vibrations using a specialised vision system.

Opis:
Starting from Michael Rendell and his team's "Managing tomorrow's people", this paper sets out to build a possible future of leadership in the European engineering education by taking the students' view on tomorrow's world into consideration. We can ask ourselves if European technical universities, and engineering education in particular. could exist in a Blue, Green and Orange World. How would they look like and how efficient would "corporate" universities be, assuming that the Blue World would prevail in the next 10 years. What should their development strategies be and what labor markets would absorb their graduates? What if universities would be in the Green or Orange World? What leaders should they have then? Starting from these questions we try to construct possible scenarios for a European reality.

Opis:
Modern families function differently than families of the previous generations. The set of family functions, the way they are performed changes, and the partnership model of the family is becoming more popular. Especially the young generation considers this model as the most practical and functional, what results from the professional activity of men and women. However, in the circles formed by the dysfunctional families (understood as problematic), so far there is not only paternalism, but also authoritarianism, what implies difficult relations in these families. Supporting young people from such families is dealt with, among others, by the Voluntary Labour Detachments, conducting different types of institutions and forms of action. In the VLD centres there is implemented a program, which constitutes the comprehensive care, educational and preventive impact, while the vocational training is a specific direction. The aim of the interaction is to equip the pupils with the skills and qualification, so they are not at the mercy of poverty, unemployment and pathologies. However, these impacts focus on professional qualifications, while the problem also includes the family functioning of these young people, which are not necessarily corrected by the mere fact of acquiring professional qualifications or even obtaining employment.

Opis:
Współczesna kultura, pomimo podejmowanych w ubiegłym stuleciu prób obalenia bergsonowskiej „tyranii oka”, po raz kolejny popada w pułapkę „fetyszyzmu spojrzenia”. Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu opozycyjne usytuowanie synestezji wobec wzrokocentrycznej machiny kulturowej oraz wskazanie na rozmaite kinematografi czne, architektoniczne, sportowo-artystyczne, chronometryczne, a nawet edukacyjne i kulturowe doświadczenia synestetyczne wieku XXI, sprzeciwiające się okulocentrycznej wizji świata.
Once again contemporary culture, regardless of the XXth century att empts to abolish Bergson’s “tyranny of the eye”, falls victim of the fetishism of the sight. The purpose of this paper is to portray synaesthesia as an antiocularcentric cultural device, as well as to indicate various cinematographic, architectural, sports, artistic, chronometric and even educational synaesthetic XXIst century cultural experiences which defy the ocularcentric vision of the world.

Opis:
Sacred Scripture provides indications of how to channel pastoral care in the parish so that pastors and lay evangelizers will be merciful like the Father. The Merciful God is presented in the Parable of the Lost Sheep, the Parable of the Lost Drachma and the Parable of the Prodigal Son. Pope Francis in Misericordiae Vultus observes that in these parables we discover “the core of the Gospel and of our faith, because mercy is presented as a force that overcomes everything, filling the heart with love and bringing consolation through pardon” (MV, 9). God is portrayed as the Merciful Father searching for those who have left the community of the faithful or got lost in the Church. This image is a foundation for creating a pastoral vision for the parish. From this perspective mercy does not apply only to the charity practices but becomes evangelisation which opens for a personal meeting with Jesus Christ in the Gospel, liturgy, sacraments and the community. From these parables the “imagination of mercy” is born, the imagination which should permeate the parish and indicate the style of pastoral care. The realisation of mercy consists in going to the peripheries of the parish in order to search for those who have left or got lost (cf. NMI, 50). The new “imagination of mercy” encourages us to use the law of gradualness in pastoral care (cf. EG, 34-39; AL, 293-295) and the strategy of facilitation (cf. EG, 44).
