Opis:
The author distinguishes three types of evolutionary theories: 1) ahistorical theories, constructed according to the methodological patterns of classical physics (mechanics), 2) supra-historical theories, in which the historical nature of the evolutionary process is reflected in a more complete (than only in the sense of the chronology of events) and richer, but its mechanism remains unchanged—“taken out of history,” 3) fully historical theories, recognizing that the factors and mechanisms of evolution themselves are entangled in history: are subject to changes in the course of historical development. A prominent representative of the third type is the theory of Ivan I. Schmalhauzen. Some peculiarities of its methodological structure are analyzed. This analysis allowed to reveal the premises of the process of evolution understood as a process of self-organization and to determine the basis on which it can be concluded that the general theory of evolution is nothing else than a theory of biological organization.

Opis:
This paper deals with the problem of alleged conflict between the theological idea of the creation of man by God and the scientific theories that explain the origin of the human body referring to the process of evolution. It is argued that there is no contradiction between these two domains and that there is no real conflict between the idea of creation and the theory of evolution. At first, the conception of evolution is introduced. Afterwards, the evolutionary creationism is presented as the theological doctrine which claims that God created man, using for this purpose mechanisms of evolution. It is argued that the Biblical account of creation must not be understood literally and that during the lecture of this account one should respect the interpretative principle of St. Augustine concerning metaphorical sense of some Biblical texts. Finally, a “method” of explaining of the emergence of the human body by a direct action of God (“God of the gaps”) is criticized.

Opis:
The objective of the paper is to present a Cognitive Semantics approach to Darwin’s theory of evolution. An analysis of the text of The Origin of Species allowed to identify a number of conceptual metaphors, such as: EVOLUTIONARY CHANGE IS A JOURNEY, MODIFICATION IS SUBSTANCE, ORGANISMS ARE FAMILY MEMBERS, RELATIONSHIPS AMONG ORGANISMS ARE STRUGGLE, and personification of natural selection. The metaphors are illustrated by excerpts from Darwin’s book. It is claimed that conceptual metaphors contribute to coherence of Darwin’s argument, help to present the theory in a comprehensive and interesting way, and have impact on evolutionary reasoning due to metaphorical entailments. The analysis provides evidence that the logic of the evolutionary theory derives partially from the logic of source domains through which the fundamental concepts of change and relationships among organisms are conceptualized. Finally, it is argued that evolutionary texts offer a rich source of well-documented materials valuable for diachronic studies of metaphor in scientific discourse, beginning with Darwin’s notebooks, through his books, and then over 150 years of evolutionary texts, both scientific and popular, by various authors. It is also believed that a Cognitive Semantics analysis can provide useful insights for better understanding the evolutionary theory as well as controversies around its presentation and reception.

The article challenges the view that the Neo-Darwinian theory of evolutionis sufficient to explain the ongoing evolution. The classical evolutionary algorithmsbased on that theory suffer from the loss of diversity, stagnation andpremature convergence. The author claims that the cosmetic changes of thosetools are not sufficient to overcome this situation and the change of overall theoreticalframework is required. The proposition of a semiotic theory of evolutioncreated by Charles Sanders Peirce is revealed as an alternative to the classicalModern Synthesis. This alternative model of evolution is implemented intwo kinds of evolutionary algorithms: P-EA and SEAM, which simulate evolutionby virtue of cooperation and symbiosis respectively. The new approach toalgorithms constructs shows significant benefits upon classical evolutionaryalgorithms in benchmark tests, which may support the original claim that theaccepted theory of evolution needs rethinking today.

Opis:
This paper challenges the critical cliché that in recent fiction Darwinism replaces religion and that the scientific worldview is always in opposition to Christian belief. A close reading of three British novels written between the late 1960s and the early 1990s – namely, John Fowles’s The French Lieutenant’s Woman, A.S. Byatt’s Morpho Eugenia (a short novel published together with her other novelette Conjugal Angel in the volume entitled Angels and Insects), and Hilary Mantel’s A Change of Climate demonstrates how Darwinian references themselves evolve over time. Three aspects of the novels are juxtaposed: primarily, the way they depict natural history in the 19th century – Darwin and his fellow naturalists – and thus create the myth of how modern science was born in Victorian England. Secondly, the paper establishes what the novelists in question understand by the word ‘science’ and whether for them natural science is or is not science proper. Thirdly and lastly, what is the novelists’ attitude to the alleged conflict between Christian belief and the theory of evolution. In the quarter century dividing Fowles’s novel from Mantel’s much changes in the way each of these problems is handled.

Opis:
Biological reality does not consist of chemistry and physics of organism alone. It also includes their information content. This information regulates developmental and reproductive processes. Its quantity is finite. We observe mixing of information (mating patterns, reduction division, hybridisation, genetic engineering), its loss (species extinction, reduction of genetic diversity in domestication, isolation, inbreeding) and increase of useless or injurious information (duplications, neutral and harmful mutations, genetic load). On the other hand we do not observe new useful biological information arising (positive mutations). New useful information does not appear by accident. Nature and man made selections reduce the information resources, mutations debilitate them, population reduction and its isolation cause accidental losses of information. Acquired resistance to antibiotics or herbicides, which is often presented as an example of increase of information, is only a defence mechanism against loss of functionality of an organism or population (e.g. by immunological adaptation). Such mechanisms belong to the already existing information content. No new organs or functions are produced. Until natural sciences come up with an indication of the mode by which useful information resources can be increased in nature, by which new functions or organs are produced, the theory of evolution will remain a hypothesis without substantiation in facts.

Opis:
Attempts of explaining the Catholic doctrine of original sin in the light of the theory of evolution are important in the interdisciplinary dialogue between theology and natural sciences. Solutions, proposed by theologians, can be divided into three main groups. Initially the dominating concepts justified monogenism (Adam as the only origin of humanity), while taking the neutral position towards natural sciences, and basing on conclusions drawn from the doctrinal teaching of the Church and biblical exegesis (e.g. young K. Rahner, L. Scheffczyk). In the 60s of the twentieth century, there were studies which were open to natural sciences and the evolutionary vision of the world. There were attempts of reconciling polygenism (a primary community instead of an indi-vidual Adam) with the dogma of original sin, while respecting the indivisible source of the origi-nal sin (late K. Rahner, Z. Alszeghy, M. Flick, R. Schwager). Concurrently, there were theologi-cal suggestions which under the influence of interdisciplinary dialogue gave up on monogenism, individual sinner, and any first sinful community (P. Teilhard de Chardin).

In September 2006, a symposium on the subject of creation–evolution was held in Castel Gandolfo. It was an opportunity to present the views of Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI on the theory of evolution. At the same time, the Pope pointed to the fundamental “truth” of Christianity. It is rooted in the creative Divine Logos made manifest in Jesus Christ. In many of his texts, Joseph Ratzinger patiently recalls the “rationality”, “logicality” of all creation, especially of man and human cognition. He pays special attention to the uniqueness of Catholic faith and theology, which is expressed in its rationality. The thought of the German theologian captivates with its accuracy, logic and precision. Hence the suggestion of this paper. It presents three important texts, published at different times, on the subject of the “logic” of the Catholic faith.

Opis:
In this article the author considers an attitude of the Russian Orthodox Church towards the theory of evolution beginning with the year of publication of Darwin 'The Evolution of Species' until contemporary times. The orthodox theology relies upon the thought of Greek Fathers of the Church who emphasized a difference between the incomprehensible essence of God and His actions (energies), by which He reveals Himself in the created world. In the light of the above conception the Orthodox Church acknowledges every scientific theory as an reflexion of this revelation, if only it doesn't trespass its relevant boundaries. Thus, the Russian Orthodox Church has never condemned the evolution theory itself, although some of her theologians have been criticizing some of its aspects. In the last part the author presents contemporary polemics between orthodox evolutionists and creationists. He also suggests some insight into their arguments exposing their limitations.
There is, as evolutionists like to say, a mountain of evidence for Charles Darwin’s theory. But quantity does not always make for quality. For the most part, this evidence falls into three categories: comparative anatomy, small-scale change, and the fossil record. We will survey each category and see the same pattern in each case: only when used selectively or superficially does the evidence support evolution. When carefully considered, the evidence is ambiguous and even argues against evolution. The evidence for the theory of evolution are assessed on religious grounds, based on presuppositions about the nature of God and what this God would and would not do. It would be far more accurate to view Darwinian evolution as a religious theory that has penetrated natural science rather than as a scientific theory that impinges on our religious understandings. In purporting to keep science free from religion, evolution foists religion on science and thereby subverts the very integrity of science. Evolutionists have consistently promoted their theory as an objective conclusion based on a purely scientific analysis of the data. This is simply inaccurate. Evolution is an unlikely story fueled by theological presuppositions and religious sentiment, not scientific reasoning.
