Opis:
The word “life” and its beginning represent a series of phenomena that relate to different areas. The explanation of this term, its value and its origin can be observed in biology, anthropology and also in theology. When it comes to the question of when human life begins, we find different answers, whether it be a religious point of view, claiming that life begins with conception, or bioethical or philosophical points of view. “Christian bioethics not materially equivalent to a secular bioethics appears particular and sectarian rather than universal” (Engelhardt 2000, p. 1). The question of the value of life is also consulted in various areas. In biology, life is a phenomenon that takes place in cells, in individual organs, and ultimately in the whole organism. From an anthropological point of view, we distinguish three aspects of life: its corporeality, its psyche and personality and also its social-com- munication aspect. From the theological point of view, human life is a gift that comes from God and is something sacred that deserves respect. Life is something that goes beyond our everyday life and leads to the foundation of the meaning of all life and our whole being. Since the beginning of rational thinking, we have been trying to explain life and its beginning to various philosophers who associate this issue with the relationship between body and soul. There are opinions on their indivisibility, but also dualistic concepts. We encounter here the theories of the immortality of the soul, the existence of the soul according to Plato but we also find opinions on the non-existent soul. This relationship of body and soul is most important at the critical points of our earthly life, namely its birth and death.

Preview: /Douglas Anderson interviewed by Eli Kramer/ As history tells us, Greek philosophy was not a profession but a feature of living – an active search for a good life. It was not driven by final answers but, if Plato is to be believed, by an ongoing eros for beauty and goodness. The phrase “philosophy of culture” reminds me of what the profession calls an area of specialization or competence. For me, it is better to think of philosophy – a love of wisdom – as one aspect of cultural life. In this way, I see every culture as being philosophical. Oddly, our profession often denies the term “philosophy” to Asian thought, to American Indian thought, and so forth. Again, as I view things, this is not only a colossal and misplaced arrogance but a thorough misunderstanding of the life of philosophy.

Countries in transition, such as Serbia, have been going through obligatory system reforms, including the reform of the healthcare system. As a rule, occupational health becomes marginalized by the authorities who decide on medical care. In spite of the fact that this branch of medicine cares for working population that mostly carries the burden of transition, when material situation equals the existential minimum, its potentials are not recognized. On the other hand, the World Health Organization makes a remark that such population’s health is undermined now more than ever, and adopts a binding global plan for member countries and their experts in occupational health to take urgent measures for overall working people’s health according to their needs. It seems that former work method of biomedicine specialists could not realize such ambition. This paper discusses the possibilities of occupational health future orientation toward holistic medicine, for the sake of workers’ well-being and better quality of their lives, then creation of more humane society and vocational affirmation. Health promotion at workplace and salutogenic concept may have crucial roles. This concept is a huge challenge for academic public and vocational practitioners in poor countries in transition that are already burdened with the current economic and financial crisis. Each in their own way, helped by self-education and education, without big material investments, together they may take their countries to the road of health, the road still rarely taken, yet more secure.

Opis:
The term respect is frequently used in ordinary communication however it also has a significant role in philosophical discussions focused on environmental ethics. This essay deals with the ambiguity of the term respect. The author analyzes respect from a philosophical point of view claiming that several possible interpretations of what the word respect means and what standards of behavior to which it is to be related. It is pointed out that the issue of whether respect should be understood as an attitude or behavior. The author highlights the problem of constraints imposed by respect and the relation of respect to intrinsic and instrumental value. The approach is analyzed also from the point of view of Kant’s ethics, nevertheless the author examines it also from the standpoints of various contemporary environmental ethicists (e.g. Taylor, Goodpaster, Katz, Lo). However, author concludes that understanding respect as a virtue appears to be a most promising approach in contemporary environmental ethics because it can solve the problem of finding balanced interpretation of respect.

This article deals with the issue of ancient Greek models of life up to the time of Plato’s philosophy. The author presents in a brief way the ideals in the writing of Homer’s and Hesiod’s, in the Pericleus’ speech from the Peloponnesian war, the Spartans, Pythagoreans and Plato’s model of life and education. Next he tries to describe how and which of these models were assimilated by Christians in the first centuries and which were rejected. The purpose of this article is to show how important ancient Greek culture and philosophy was for Christians not to mention the Greek language in which the New Testament was written. Understanding the development of theology in the early Greek Church requires knowledge of ideals and values which were important for people before accepting the Jesus Gospel.

His works also include three excellent interdisciplinary books that show the personality of the scientist, a system of thought, ideological affiliation, source of strength, and motivation. These are Catharsis. The healing power of Nature and Art (2007); Kore. The sick, sickness and the search for the medicine of the soul (2007) and thirdly, the posthumously published Immortality. Promethean sleep medicine (2012), all published by the Krakow printing house Znak. The author does engage in systematic exposition, rather the works take the form of an almanac. The professor talks about his research and treatment of patients, shows the di&culties encountered and emerging concerns, and even includes anecdotes of his family life. These books are written in lively, beautiful Polish.

The article is an attempt to link the philosophy of Levinas with the bioethical issues of the beginning of human life. The author refers to those statements of Levinas in which he describes who a person is, what is human body, being male/female, fatherhood. The ethical-anthropological character of Levinas’ thought makes it a profound source for contemporary discussions on moral themes, bioethical problems included. However, certain difficulties arise on account of the philosopher’s highly individual language. The aim of the article is to confront the language o f Levinas with the traditional language of Aristotelian-Thomistic philosophy and colloquial language. The text is a proposition how to build bioethics not only on Aristotelian-Thomistic philosophy or utilitarian or pragmatic philosophy but also on the philosophy of Levinas, as it sheds additional light on the problem of man, existence, life and interpersonal relations.

The article presents reflections on the idea of sustainable development from the perspective of Henryk Skolimowski's concept. It presents an analysis of the key assumptions of the Polish philosopher's eco-philosophy and an attempt to combine them with the goals of sustainable development. The considerations oscillate around the following question: Is the concept of Henryk Skolimowski, and especially his postulates of giving the culture a universal pro-ecological character, be reconciled with the global goals of sustainable development included in the Resolution adopted by the General Assembly on September 25, 2015, entitled "We are transforming our world: Agenda for sustainable development 2030"?

The technological progress which dynamizes the process of mediatization, makes communication become transformed. Its main feature becomes imagery and rhetoricalness. Communiques are built on the basis of image and features of image which is a carrier of various functions, where the rhetorical persuasion is the main function. The present considerations are an analysis of examples of signs of mediatization of man and society as a phenomenon which is founded on the object of communiques formulated by man by means of digital media and communiques built without their contribution. A common feature of these acts of communication is imagery which seems to be a perennial tendency of the human mind and is visible already on the level of the language of words. Reflexions are a certain proposal of a direction of research of mediatization and many possible aspects, in which this process reveals itself, as well as contexts and interpretative prisms of rhetorical-philosophical conceptions.

This paper examines philosophy as a way of life in a time of crisis by focusing on Buddhism, envisioned as a path exercising the faculty of “mindfulness.” From this standpoint of “Buddhist philosophy as mindful exercise,” and following the Kyōto School’s inspiration of engaging a dialogue with Western traditions, including modern psychology and medicine, the paper reflects upon the role of philosophy during this critical period. In response to the contemporary fragmentation of knowledge, it conceives creatively a set of core principles in the form of maxims – to be examined and adapted by each potentially interested individual – as tools to retain vital information, organize reflection, and reorient one’s attention and destiny. Structured according to the Buddhist categories of view, meditation, and conduct, this collection of maxims serves to articulate the organic movement that goes back and forth between the distinctions made in philosophical discourse and the unity of lived philosophy.

Opis:
This work is developed within the context of the theological turn of French phenomenology (Janicaud), analyzing the notion of life that Michel Henry stages in the first of his works, The Essence of Manifestation. To this end, we intend to explain what the French author understands both by the alienated manifestation of phenomena in terms of representation or ontological monism, and by the self-manifestation of life that he privileges, which does not consist in placing the phenomena in the light of a conscience, as would be characteristic of the first manifestation, but in a philosophy of Night that owes nothing in the strict sense to mundane transcendence. The latter is preceded and, in any case, made possible by the former. According to Henry, there is an absolute knowledge that is not susceptible to any progress, thus founding a pathetic philosophy by which life reveals itself (Parousia) without the need for intermediaries that would alienate its intimate immediacy.
