The concept of subjectivity can help in the reflection on the ontological status of the human being and his or her community, and on the relations between people and communities, as well as the importance of a human being within the communities. This concept can and should be the outset of a reflection on society, the state, politics, humanity, mental health, and identity. This paper drafts a theory of subjectivity at a time of the contemporary civilizational crisis, when humans and values often get lost in the liquid reality.

The paper focuses on the transformation of civilizations as a change of culture and the alteration of the professed value systems. Feliks Koneczny – a Polish historian and history philosopher, an author of the original comparative civilization theory – outlined his innovative way of understanding the concept of Civilization and the laws which rule within. The article’s main thesis articulates that in the contemporary Western Europe, not only the structure of values is transforming, but simultaneously there exist two structures of values, which are antagonizing perpetually and which derive from two different Civilizations. Consequently, the antagonism implies a conflict between Latin and post-modern civilization. They both exist beside one another and also dictate the methods of social life functioning. According to one of the civilizational laws outlined by Koneczny in his theory, Civilizations tend to expand in every way possible. This consequently leads to conflicts and wars between them, whilst most of the time the younger civilizations win over the older ones. The contemporary civilization crisis is the very outcome of the clash of the Civilizations.

The article is about the conception of sustainable development settled in the context of cultural and civilization changes. It can be taken as an alternative to further civilization development and a new panorama, opening up perspectives for the further sustainable development of civilization. The conception is a global strategy of development. It relies on the including of the natural environment into the social and economic development of a region, country or, from a global perspective, of the whole world. It assumes a long-lasting improvement of the quality of life of the present and future generations which is integrally associated with environmental improvement. It also shows the necessity of the spiritual growth and changes of the material aims of the development into immaterial ones. In all these aims and assumptions, there are a lot of practical and mental problems in the sphere of sustainable development which retard and even make it impossible to put these conceptions effectively into life.
Artykuł dotyczy koncepcji zrównoważonego rozwoju w kontekście przemian kulturowych i cywilizacyjnych. Można być ona traktowana jako alternatywa dla dalszego rozwoju cywilizacyjnego i nowej panoramy, otwierającej perspektywy dalszego zrównoważonego rozwoju cywilizacji. Koncepcja ta jest globalną strategią rozwoju. Polega na włączeniu środowiska naturalnego w rozwój społeczno-gospodarczy regionu, kraju lub w ujęciu globalnym nawet całego świata. Zakłada ona trwałą poprawę jakości życia obecnych i przyszłych pokoleń, co jest nierozerwalnie związane z poprawą stanu środowiska. Wskazuje także na konieczność duchowego wzrostu i przemiany materialnych celów rozwoju na cele niematerialne. We wszystkich tych celach i założeniach istnieje wiele praktycznych i psychologicznych wyzwań w związku z wdrażaniem koncepcji zrównoważonego rozwoju. Wyzwania te opóźniają, a nawet uniemożliwiają skuteczną implementację tej koncepcji.

The contemporary education faces the worsening structural crisis. It is the real e d u c a t i o n a l c r i s i s – it’s being exposed at a scale not experienced before. This crisis is determined with the civilization and economy. It’s being invoked with expanded scientific-technology and information civilization and co-related new neoliberal socio-economic system. Thus, the educational crisis is global, as it’s determinants are. The article focus on the main manifestations of the educational crisis: 1) the excessive orientation of higher education programmes on the utilitarian (professional, vocational) knowledge at the expense of the general (cultural and humanistic) knowledge, which is driven by the economic growth; 2) the collapse of the great pedagogical narratives and ideas; 3) the regress of academic identity of the most of universities; 4) the increasing dysfunction of the classical models of school, teacher and upbringing; 5) the permanent decrease of the quality of the general education and upbringing. The contemporary educational crisis is the major threat to the comprehensive and harmonious human development, in a sense it’s the crisis of the man himself.

In this article the authors look at the topic of the crisis of Western civilisation in the context of the ecological crisis. In the opinion of a Polish ecophilosopher, the latter is a symptom of the failure of a scientific-technological civilization, which Skolimowski often contemptuously calls plastic. In the first part, the authors present Skolimowski's diagnosis of Western civilisation, in the second part they describe the postulate of a new ecological civilization. The Polish ecophilosopher is aware of the fact that this requires a new look at philosophy itself, a new science, new ethics, a new education and even a new ecological spirituality. The recurring adjective 'new' points on the one hand to the necessity of breaking with current philosophical tradition and on the other – to opening up to and looking for inspiration in present existential dimensions; this referring mainly to broadly understood spirituality. In the last part of the article the authors take a critical look at H. Skolimowski's civilizational project, at the same time holding in great regard his work and his engagement in relation to environmental protection.

Punktem wyjścia rozważań jest analiza obecnego kryzysu cywilizacyjnego i poszukiwań nowych wizji dalszego rozwoju „zglobalizowanej ludzkości”. W tym kontekście ukazane sa różne rozumienia postulatu zrównoważonego rozwoju i uzasadniana jest teza, iż dominujące obecnie w świecie polityki i biznesu pojmowanie sustainable development mieści sie w ramach dotychczasowego paradygmatu rozwoju cywilizacyjnego i de facto wyraża dążenie do kontynuowania (w zmodyfikowanej wersji) dotychczasowego modelu rozwoju. Zarazem zarysowuje sie możliwość takiego rozumienia zrównoważonego rozwoju, które moe stac sie punktem wyjścia dla nowej wizji rozwoju społecznego. Wymaga to gruntownego przemyślenia i rewizji filozoficznych (przede wszystkim antropologicznych i aksjologicznych), ekonomicznych (dogmatycznego neoliberalizmu w gospodarce i dominujacego modelu konsumpcji i własności) oraz politycznych (partykularyzmu w myśleniu zbiorowym i tradycyjnego pojmowania idei suwerennosci państwowej), podstaw dalszego rozwoju i włączenia do tresci sustainable development wszystkich sfer i aspektów ewolucji kulturowej ludzkosci.
The starting point of the consideration is an analysis of the present crisis of civilisation and a search for a new vision of the further advance of humankind. In this context different understandings of the postulate of sustainable development are exposed. There is a justified thesis that the meaning of sustainable development in the world of politics and business remains within the confines of the current paradigm of human development and, in fact, expresses an aspiration to continue, though somewhat modified, the previous model of the advancement of civilization. Simultaneously, it outlines a possibility of such understanding of sustainable development which can become a starting point for a new vision of social development. It requires thorough rethinking and revision of the philosophical, economical and political basis of further development including all spheres and aspects of human culture.

Mimo olbrzymiego postępu cywilizacyjnego – współczesny świat przeżywa głęboki kryzys, który można zdefiniować trzema kategoriami sformułowanymi przez komisję ekspertów prezydenta Stanów Zjednoczonych. Pierwszy wynika z totalnego konfliktu współczesnego świata w dziedzinie ideologii i religii. Drugi ma naturę ekonomiczną i wyraża się ciągle dramatycznymi nierównościami. Trzeci – to zagrożenia ekologiczne. Autor próbuje odnaleźć i sformułować drogi wyjścia z owych pułapek ideologicznych, ekonomicznych i przyrodniczych.
The message of this paper is to raise the awareness of modern man and the world he has created to impending threats and crisis events. Despite the tremendous civilizatory progress mankind has achieved the world is currently experiencing a severe crisis which can be devided into three categories as defined by the Expert Commission of the President of the United States. The first one results from a clash of ideologies and religions in today‘s world. The second is of economic nature and expresses itself in social inequalities of a dramatic scale. The third one comprises ecologic disasters. The author attempts to show how mankind may securely avoid these ideological, economic and natural pitfalls.

The implementation of the modern postulate of scientific and technical progress is considered the main cause of the ecological crisis. This study aims to show that – despite the authors ecologizing Karl Marx's thought – his philosophy continues to call for the well-being of nations through the ruthless use of nature and justifies progress understood in terms of imperialist anthropocentric subordination of nature to man, contributing to further deepening the feeling of alienation from nature and the disappearance of any respect for it.
Za zasadniczą przyczynę kryzysu ekologicznego uznaje się realizację nowożytnego postulatu postępu naukowo-technicznego. Niniejsze opracowanie ma na celu wykazanie, że – wbrew głosom ekologizującym myśl Karola Marksa – jego filozofia kontynuuje wezwanie do tworzenia dobrobytu narodów na drodze bezwzględnego wykorzystania przyrody i usprawiedliwia postęp rozumiany w kategoriach imperialistycznego antropocentrycznego podporządkowania przyrody człowiekowi, prowadząc jednocześnie do dalszego pogłębienia poczucia wyobcowania człowieka z przyrody i zaniku jakiegokolwiek respektu wobec niej.

A perusal of Conrad’s novels and Norwid’s Civilization easily allows us to discern a similarity of ideas. Both authors analyse the social consequences of technological progress and are particularly disturbed by the illusionary feeling of security that it brings, coming from a conviction that the forces of nature have finally been subdued. Modernity deprives Man of his greatness - it “takes the spell away”. With the disappearance of the common toil that holds people together comes a loosening of social bonds. Norwid wrote his Civilization in reaction to the news of the sinking of the Pacific - a steamship on which he had once returned from America. Conrad for his part was fascinated by the greatest sea disaster of his times: the sinking of the Titanic. The reluctance of both authors to acknowledge progress as an absolute entity may be explained by their shared Romantic view of the world, which was incompatible with any order based solely on “material interests”.
