Opis:
Uniaxial tensile tests were performed on porcine skin to investigate the tensile stress-strain constitutive characteristic at qua-sistatic deformations using uniaxial tensile tests. Experimental results were then used to determine the parameters of the various constitutive model types for rubber, including the Mooney-Rivlin, Yeoh, Ogden, and others. The Prony series viscoelastic model was also calibrated based on the stress relaxation test. To investigate the calibrated constitutive equations (visco-hyperelastic), the falling impact test was conducted. From the viewpoint of the maximum impact load, the error was approximately 15.87%. Overall, the Ogden model predicted the experimental measurements most reasonably. The calibrated constitutive model is expected to be of practical use in describing the mechanical properties of porcine skin.

Opis:
The objective of this research work was to estimate the effect of thermal cycling on the tensile behavior of CARALL composites. Fiber metal laminates (FMLs), based on 2D woven carbon fabric and 2024-T3 Alclad aluminum alloy sheet were manufactured by pressure molding technique followed by hand layup method. Before fabrication, aluminum sheets were anodized with phosphoric acid to produce a micro porous alumina layer on surface. This microporous layer is beneficial to produce a strong bond between the metal and fiber surfaces in FMLs. The effect of thermal cycling (-65 to +70ºC) on the tensile behavior of Cf/Al based FML was studied. Tensile strength was increased after 10 thermal cycles, but it was decreased slightly to some extent after 30 and 50 thermal cycles. Tensile modulus also show similar behavior as that of tensile strength.

Opis:
The dynamic tensile behavior of a ZrB2-SiC ceramic was investigated via split Hopkinson pressure bar tests and a bond-based peridynamic model. The experimental results showed that the peak dynamic splitting tensile stress increased linearly with the strain rate. The dynamic tensile stress history and fracture pattern exhibited a significant strain-rate dependence. In simulation, the strain-rate dependent on the critical energy release rate was introduced to predict the dynamic tensile behavior of the ZrB2-SiC ceramic. The numerical results were in good agreement with the experimental results, verifying the applicability of the peridynamic model. The maximum error of the peak dynamic splitting tensile stress between the experimental and numerical results was no greater than 6%. Moreover, the effect of the strain rate on the fracture patterns of the ZrB2-SiC ceramic composite can be well predicted by the peridynamics method. The ZrB2-SiC composite specimen split into two large fragments with additional small fragments under dynamic splitting tension. With the increase of strain rate, the main crack propagation and branching led to a larger fracture region in the middle of the specimen.

In this study, we investigate the mechanical behavior of each skin layer, in terms of the nominal stress-strain curve by uniaxial tensile tests using specimens of porcine skin in two forms: dermis containing epidermis, and all three layers. All tests were performed under cyclic loading at the constant strain rate of 10-3 s-1 at ambient temperature. To measure the precise initial crosssectional areas of each layer, the thickness of each skin layer was quantified by counting the number of pixels on the photo-image using image-processing software. In the tensile test, force-strain curves of the total skin and dermis with epidermis were obtained. Subsequently, a rule of mixtures was applied to determine the nonlinear mechanical properties of the hypodermis layer. In conclusion, we could define the uniaxial tensile behavior of the hypodermis, and additionally predict the weight effect of the dermis and hypodermis layers in the tensile test.

Opis:
Although many studies have focused on the unique plastic deformation behavior of nanocrystalline aluminum (e.g., the positive deviation from Hall-Petch relation, the unusual yield-drop phenomenon in tensile mode, etc.), the data reported by different research groups are inconsistent with each other, possibly because of different fabrication processes. In this study, aluminum samples with a wide grain-size spectrum – from a few micrometers down to 100 nanometers – are manufactured by powder metallurgy. The grain size was measured by X-ray diffraction analysis and transmission electron microscope observation. Furthermore, the tensile behavior, which varied according to a grain size, is discussed with a comparison of the theoretical models.

Opis:
The finite element analysis method (FEM), for its advantages of lower time and economic costing in predicting the mechanical properties of fabrics, was applied to warp-knitted fabrics. In this paper, two bar warp-knitted fabric knitted with wires was used as reflecting mesh antennas. Firstly the loop unit of the metallic warp-knitted fabric was simulated in 3-D by TexGen software. Secondly the 3-D loop unit model was inputted into ABAQUS software to form a model of the metallic warp-knitted fabric sheet for uni-axial tension analysis. Thirdly numerical results were obtained after setting the parameters in ABAQUS. Finally numerical results were verified by uni-axial tensile experiments on the metallic warp-knitted fabric. The results showed that the simulation was in good agreement with the experimental tensile process, where the transfer of yarns between loops when in low fabric elongation and in yarn elongation when in high fabric elongation were simulated by FEM of warp-knitted fabric in the tensile process. Also the same trend of tensile force was found in experiment and FEM results. Therefore it can be concluded that FEM can be used to predict the mechanical properties of warp-knitted fabric with a complex structure.

The capabilities of different constitutive equations of approximating the tensile flow curves and correlating plastic behavior with the microstructure were investigated in austempered ductile iron ADI 1050. In a previous paper, the microstructure evolution of ADI 1050 during austempering was investigated through quenching the ADI 1050 after 14 increasing austempering times to room temperature. The 14 samples were tensile tested and two classes of constitutive equations were examined in the present paper. The Hollomon-type constitutive equations approximated all of the tensile flow curves of ADI 1050 very well but failed in correlating the plastic behavior with microstructure evolution. Voce-type constitutive equations approximated the tensile flow curves only at high stresses very well but could correlate the plastic behavior with the microstructure evolution of ADI 1050 during austempering excellently. The reason of this success was rationalized in terms of the physical basis of Voce-type equations, while Hollomon-type equations are empirical.

This study attempted to manufacture an ODS alloy by combining multiple milling processes in mechanical alloying stage to achieve high strength and fracture elongation. The complex milling process of this study conducted planetary ball milling, cryogenic ball milling and drum ball milling in sequential order, and then the microstructure and tensile deformation behavior were investigated after additional heat treatment. The oxide particles distributed within the microstructure were fine oxide particles of 5~20 nm and coarse oxide particles of 100~200 nm, and the oxide particles were confirmed to be composed of Cr, Ti, Y and O. Results of tensile tests at room temperature measured yield strength, tensile strength and elongation as 1320 MPa, 2245 MPa and 4.2%, respectively, before heat treatment, and 1161 MPa, 2020 MPa and 5.5% after heat treatment. This results indicate that the ODS alloy of this study gained very high strengths compared to other known ODS alloys, allowing greater plastic zones.

In this paper, as a purpose to apply the supersaturated solid-solutionized Al-9Mg alloy to the structural sheet parts of automotive, tensile tests were conducted under the various conditions and a constitutive equation was derived from the tensile test results. Al-9Mg alloy was produced using a special Mg master alloy containing Al2Ca during the casting process and extruded into the sheet. In order to study the deformation behavior of Al-9Mg alloy in warm temperature forming environments, tensile tests were conducted under the temperature of 373 K-573 K and the strain rate of 0.001/s~0.1/s. in addition, by using the raw data obtained from tensile tests, a constitutive equation of the Al-9Mg alloy was derived for predicting the optimized condition of the hot stamping process. Al-9Mg alloy showed uncommon deformation behavior at the 373 K and 473 K temperature conditions. The calculated curves from the constitutive equation well-matched with the measured curves from the experiments particularly under the low temperature and high strain rate conditions.

Opis:
Tensile tests of 8009Al alloy reinforced with SiC and Al₂O₃ particles fabricated by powder metallurgy (PM) were conducted at temperatures of 250–350°C and strain rates of 0.001–0.1 s⁻¹. The ultimate tensile strength and yield strength of the samples decreased while the temperature and strain rate increased. The elongation slightly decreased at first and then increased with growing temperature because of the medium-temperature brittleness of the alloy matrix. When the strain rate was 0.1 s⁻¹, the elongation of the 8009Al/Al₂O₃ composites always decreased with an increase in temperature because of the poorly coordinated deformation and weak bonding between the matrix and Al₂O₃ particles at such a high strain rate. The work-hardening rates of the composites sharply increased to maxima and then decreased rapidly as the strain increased. Meanwhile, the 8009Al/SiCₚ composites displayed superior UTS, YS, elongation, and work-hardening rates than those of the 8009Al/Al₂O₃ composites under the same conditions. Compared to 8009Al alloys reinforced with spherical Al₂O₃ particle, 8009Al alloys reinforced with irregular SiC particles exhibited a better strengthening effect. The fracture mechanism of the 8009Al/SiCₚ composites was mainly ductile, while that of the 8009Al/Al₂O₃ composites was primarily debonding at the matrix–particle interfaces in a brittle mode.

Tensile deformation behavior of nuclear grade Austenitic Stainless Steel (SS) and its welded joints fabricated by Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) and Activated Flux Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (AGTAW) processes were studied and correlated with relevant microstructural morphologies using Infrared Thermography (IRT) technique. The microstructure of base metal showed a complete austenite phase. GTAW Fusion Zone (FZ) exhibited both primary ferrite and primary austenite mode of solidification. Meantime, AGTAW FZ exhibited only primary austenite mode of solidification. A strain rate of 4.4x10-4 s-1 was used during the tensile test of the base metal and welded joints. The failure locations of the base metal, GTAW and AGTAW samples were noticed at the center of the gauge portion, the base metal side away from Fusion Line (FL) and Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) respectively. The temperature variations of the base metal and weld zones were recorded in the form of thermograms using the IR camera at the different stages of the tensile deformation. During deformation study, peak temperature of 39.2 °C, 38.8 °C and 34 °C were observed at the base metal, GTAW and AGTAW samples respectively. The lesser peak temperature of the AGTAW sample compared to the base metal and GTAW samples indicated that the AGTAW sample undergone lesser deformation. Moreover, tensile deformation behaviours of the base metal and welded joints were correlated with their microstructural morphologies using corresponding temperature curves.
W pracy zbadano zachowanie deformacji podczas rozciągania austenitycznej stali nierdzewnej i jej połączeń spawanych wykonanych metodą GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) oraz AGTAW (Activated Flux Gas Tungsten Arc Welding), a następnie skorelowano je z odpowiednimi morfologiami mikrostrukturalnymi za pomocą termografii w podczerwieni (ang. lnfrared Thermography). Mikrostruktura materiału bazowego wykazała całkowitą fazę austenitu. Spoina GTAW wykazywała zarówno ferryt, jak i austenit, podczas gdy spoina AGTAW wykazywała jedynie austenit. Podczas próby rozciągania materiału bazowego i złączy spawanych zastosowano prędkość odkształcania o wartości 4,4x10-4 s-1. Do zerwania poszczególnych próbek doszło odpowiednio na środku próbki materiału bazowego, w linii wtopienia złącza spawanego GTAW i w strefie wpływu ciepła (SWC) złącza spawanego AGTAW. Zmiany temperatury w materiale rodzimym i poszczególnych obszarach złączy spawanych rejestrowano w formie termogramów za pomocą kamery na podczerwień, przy różnych etapach deformacji podczas rozciągania. Podczas badań odkształceń zaobserwowano maksymalne wartości temperatury: 39,2 °C, 38,8 °C i 34 °C odpowiednio w próbkach z materiału bazowego, spawanych GTAW i spawanych AGTAW.

An understanding of the fundamental correlation between grain size and material damping is crucial for the successful development of structural components offering high strength and good mechanical energy absorption. With this regard, we fabricated aluminum sheets with grain sizes ranging from tens of microns down to 60 nm and investigated their tensile properties and mechanical damping behavior. An obvious transition of the damping mechanism was observed at nanoscale grain sizes, and the underlying causes by grain boundaries were interpreted.

Opis:
The present study aimed to determine the effect of moisture transmission finish on the performance of knitted cotton fabrics in terms of their tensile strength and moisture transmission behavior. Two groups: single and rib-knit cotton fabrics were collected from Nishat Mills Limited. A moisture management finish was applied onto the collected fabrics. The effect of the applied finish was investigated against their moisture transmission behavior by following the AATCC 195-2009 test procedure. The tensile strength was also evaluated with the ASTM D 5035-11 test method. The difference was studied between finished and unfinished samples. It was concluded that the moisture transmission finish has decreased the absorption rate and spreading speed of water through/in treated fabrics as compared to untreated fabrics. Moreover, breaking load and elongation of knitted fabrics in both directions were also improved with the application of finish.

Opis:
Purpose: This paper aims to assess microstructures and mechanical properties of annealed and un-annealed Al-Li alloys (AA8090) and provide valid information regarding influence of anisotropy on tensile properties, fatigue lives. Design/methodology/approach: The methodology included investigating the influence of annealing on grain size, tensile strength and fatigue lives of AA8090. Optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction were utilized to analyse the crystallographic texture. Findings: The results showed that the un-annealed alloy exhibited much finer grain structure in three directions, namely longitudinal (L) rolling direction, L-45° and Long transverse (LT) combined with stronger crystallographic texture. Regarding to mechanical properties, un-annealed alloy presented superior tensile strength with strong anisotropic behaviour. L and LT grains direction showed highest tensile strength value of 550 MPa and L-45° showed lowest tensile strength value of 420 MPa. Results of fatigue test revealed that annealed Al-Li alloy has lower fatigue lives with high influence of test direction on fatigue properties. Higher variation in fatigue life to failure links with un-annealed alloy over annealed alloy. Examination of fractured surface showed that the morphology of fractured surface is a mixture of ductile and brittle fractures in both annealed and un-annealed alloys with more brittle behaviour in un-annealed alloy. Research limitations/implications: The main challenge of this work is the determination of the test direction (test angle in respect to rolling direction), which is necessary to provide correct information regarding mechanical properties. Further study of low cycle fatigue can be done in future, which will be an excellent indication to mechanical properties of this alloy since it provides more understanding to the behaviour of the material and better comprehend crack propagation and strain stress concentration. Practical implications: AA8090 alloy is an important candidate for aerospace and aircraft industries. Influence of annealing heat treatment and rolling direction on mechanical properties of AA8090 alloy provides more accurate information to the manufacturers who deal with this alloy. Originality/value: This study is affording a significant information regarding the effect of annealing and anisotropic behaviour on mechanical properties of AA8090. To our knowledge, there are few reports that study this combination of factors on AA8090 alloy.

Opis:
An analytical approach is proposed for studying the elastic-plastic behavior of short fiber reinforced metal matrix composites under tensile loading. In the proposed research, a micro- mechanical approach is employed considering an axi-symmetric unit cell including one fiber and the surrounding matrix. First, the governing equations and the boundary conditions are derived and the elastic solution is obtained based on some shear lag type methods. Since under normal loading conditions and according to the fiber material characteristics the me- tal matrix undergoes plastic deformation, while the fiber remains within the elastic region, a plastic deformation is obtained for the matrix under each small tensile loading step. Then, the elastic-plastic stress transfer behavior of the composite is studied considering this plastic deformation. The results are finally compared with the numerical results obtained from the FE analysis of the considered micromechanical model.

Activated tungsten inert gas (ATIG) welding has a good depth of penetration (DOP) as compared to the conventional tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding. This paper is mainly focused on ATIG characterization and mechanical behavior of aluminum alloy (AA) 6063-T6 using SiO2 flux. The characterization of the base material (BM), fusion zone (FZ), heat affected zone (HAZ) and, partially melted zone is carried out using the suitable characterization methods. The weld quality is characterized using ultrasonic-assisted non-destructive evaluation. A-scan result confirms that the ATIG welded samples have more DOP and less bead width as compared to conventional TIG. The recorded tensile strength of ATIG with SiO2 is better than the conventional TIG welding. The failure mode is ductile for ATIG welding with larger fracture edges and is brittle in the case of conventional TIG welding.

Opis:
This study investigates the effects of frequency, compression force and Vee angle parameters of High-Frequency Electric Resistance Welding (HF-ERW) process on mechanical properties of API X52 microalloy steel welding joint. Therefore, API X52 microalloy steel sheets having thickness of 8 mm was provided to manufacture pipes with the diameter of 16”. with direct weld seams using the HF-ERW method. During the manufacturing process, frequency values of 150, 200 and 250 kHz, compression forces of 2, 4 and 6 mark and Vee angles of 3°, 5°, and 7° were adopted. After changing the welding parameters, from the welded pipes, tensile and Charpy impact test samples prepared to macroscopically evaluate the weld metal flow and examine the effects of these parameters on mechanical properties of the welded joints. According to the results, it was concluded that frequency of 150 kHz, the compression force of 4 mark and Vee angle of 5° yields best mechanical properties in the HF-ERW joint of API X52 microalloy steel.

Opis:
The main aim of this paper is to provide an analytical approach for the nonlinear buckling behaviors of toroidal shell segments made by three layers included honeycomb auxetic-core and two Graphene reinforced face sheets under axial compressive or tensile loads. The auxetic core is designed in a honeycomb form and three distribution laws of Graphene are considered for two symmetric face sheets. The homogenization technique for honeycomb auxetic plates and shells is applied to establish the stiffness formulations of the core. By approximating the doubly curved coordinate to the simpler coordinate with the Stein and McElman assumption, the nonlinear basic equations are formulated using the nonlinear Donnell shell theory and the model of the two-parameter foundation. The Galerkin method can be performed three times for three states of buckling responses and the expressions of the load-deflection postbuckling curves can be determined. The numerical examinations present that the bifurcation buckling occurs with both axial tensile and compressive loads for convex and concave shells and the significantly beneficial effects of auxetic core and functionally graded Graphene reinforced face sheets on nonlinear buckling responses of shell segments.
