Opis:
Building a temple in Ancient Egypt began with the Foundation Ritual and ended with the consecration of the completed monument to its gods. The moment when the temple was ready for its cultic functions is by a majority of authors placed at the end of the process. The importance and complexity of the Foundation Ritual shows that directly after its completing the Egyptians might have treated extent of the future temple as a sacred space which already during the construction of the temple required some sort of cult. There seems to be no royal document referring to the official worship, but a number of ostraca from Deir el-Bahari and another longer document may be linked to this early stage unmaterialized existence of the temple. All these documents record the offerings presented in the temple by different officials of the time of Hatshepsut. At least some of them predate the completion of building operation.

This paper considers some evidence for active priestly management of the economic affairs of temples in the Ptolemaic period, especially in the Fayum. In particular, I examine the case of the ‘royal temple land’ attested in late second century bc Kerkeosiris, and suggest that the most common sacred tenant, the temple of Petesouchos, may have done so as a means of economic survival.

A reinvestigation of the so-called Serapis temple of Berenike produced proof for the existence of undisturbed archaeology around and even inside the building. Until recently it was assumed that this temple was completely excavated during the several, poorly documented, excavations of the 19th century. A small test trench against the back wall of the temple uncovered the remains of a secondary stone wall and parts of a small statue. The excavation of the northwest room resulted in the find of architectural details never published by the early excavators.

The project “Mammals in the iconography of the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut”, initiated by the author in the 2011/2012 season, encompasses a detailed documentation of the animals depicted in various parts of Hatshepsut’s temple in Deir el-Bahari as a prerequisite for in-depth research. The study follows a multi-disciplinary approach within faunal analysis, and is complemented with technological observations on the execution of relief representations from the temple. At this stage of the project, a general taxonomic identification of the animal representations is nearly complete and a further detailed study of each taxon has been undertaken. Both complete animals (mainly mammals for now) and animal raw materials were studied in addition to the contexts and scenes in which they appear.

This article is devoted to the description and analysis of the limestone stela of Haremwia from Abydos. It was on display in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo (CG 34079 / JE 22011) and is currently in the storerooms of the Grand Egyptian Museum, Giza. It dates to the period from the mid to the late Eighteenth Dynasty, New Kingdom, and probably from the reign of Amenhotep III, on the basis of its stylistic, iconographic, and epigraphic details. It is extremely well preserved and most of the colours are intact, apart from some damage to the bottom. The stela records a significant title of Haremwia, namely hry šnʿ n tȝ wʿbt, ‘chief of the provisioning sector of the temple workshop’. The importance of this stela, above all, is that it records the first attestation of this title on Egyptian monuments. Furthermore, it records Asiatic names of foreign origin for family members. The offering formula in the first register is very interesting due to the retrograde orientation of its hieroglyphic inscription. The author describes the stela, deals with its individual idiosyncrasies, inscriptions, iconographic and phraseological traits, and focuses on the titles and professions of its individuals.

Aim. To analyse the spiritual and mental existentials of Ukrainian culture, which allows identifying the immanent features of Ukrainian culture itself through the symbolic-thematic series Home-Field-Temple and examine the symbolism of the concepts “Home,” “Field,” and “Temple.” Results. The thesis that spiritual and mental existentials, in particular the Home-Field-Temple, reveal the mentality of the Ukrainian people, its spiritual and cultural identity has been further developed. Conclusion. The essence of the mentality of the Ukrainian people is revealed with the help of spiritual and mental existentials Home-Field-Temple. They play an important part in the creation of a single mental field of the Ukrainian nation, being revealed in its ideological life by certain inclinations or archetypes. The Home-Field-Temple symbol is a reference point for searching for certain archetypes of the nation. The concepts of Home-Field-Temple symbolise the trinity of one spiritual state of man, which is objectified in three guises. These concepts are so intertwined in the minds of Ukrainians that they see them as an inseparable unity – something symbolising their homeland. Home, land, and church have always been reliable support for the Ukrainian people.

Opis:
Known from a few representations in Predynastic Egyptian art, the secretarybird has otherwise been elusive, in the art of Pharaonic Egypt as well as the scientific discourse on iconographic imagery of birds in ancient Egypt. The author's studies of the animal decoration at the Temple for her doctoral dissertation identified three images of birds belonging most likely to the same species, depicted in the context of the expedition of Hatshepsut shown in the Portico of Punt. The zoological identification of the species as the secretarybird (another possibility is the African harrier-hawk) derives from an in-depth analysis of the bird’s systematics, appearance, distribution and habitat, as well as behavior, which are essential for proper species recognition and instrumental for understanding the rationale behind bringing it from the “God’s Land”. Iconographic features contesting this identification and suggesting a different species, that is, the African harrier-hawk, are discussed based on a combination of theoretical background, material analysis, on-site interviews with experts and the author’s personal experience with the species.

The Temple of Hatshepsut was in use, and frequently modified, between the 16th century BC and the 12th century AD. From the beginning of the archaeological work at the site in the 19th century, one of the primary research goals has been to understand the modifications made to the building since its initial construction. The present paper provides an overview of the different arguments and ideas proposed for the original configuration of the Upper Courtyard, confronted with evidence from recent excavations between 2014 and 2016 in different parts of the court. In 2000, architect Andrzej Kwaśnica argued for an unprecedented arrangement of the architectural elements of the Upper Courtyard. However, recent archaeological discoveries suggest that the issue should be revisited. The examination of the foundations of the Ptolemaic Portico columns has shown that the six bases may have been in situ since the reign of Hatshepsut.

The small room with a window situated in the south-east corner of the Upper Terrace of the Hatshepsut Temple at Deir el-Bahari has been interpreted by scholars to be either a slaughterhouse or a temple palace of the female pharaoh. Considering the axes of the Temple, the meaning assigned to the southern direction in connection with the solar theology, as well as the relief decoration preserved around the mentioned window, the paper proposes to reconstruct in the said space a symbolic residence of the deceased divine Hatshepsut, later turned into a palace of the sun god in its aspect of the day sun. Besides describing the changing function of the structure, it also looks into the transformation of the pharaoh into a divine being, the form of the sun god. Finally, the paper suggests possible original locations for some of the Hatshepsut statues, now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Opis:
The Ammonites, a people living east of the Jordan River, were neighbors of the ancient Israelites. The Old Testament (1 Kings, 11,5; 2 Kings, 23,13) and probably an inscription from the citadel of Amman mention Milkom as the supreme God of the Ammonites. Most Ammonite names did not contain the name of their national god, but used a more generic divine name, ’El. We don’t know if the name: ’El refers to the Canaanite god or to a local manifestation of this deity. Ammonites also worshiped other deities (i.e. ‘Astarte, ‘Anat, Ba‘al, Hadad/’Adad, Qos, Šamas, YHWH and Yerah). A number of limestone statues and clay figurines of bearded individuals wearing an atef-crown could be Ammonite monarchs or deity (Milkom or ’El). An Ammonite sanctuary has been excavated in Ruğm el-Kursi, situated north-west of Amman. Excavations at this site unearthed a rectangular building measuring 18,70 x 12,60 m. The orientation of the temple is east-west, with the entrance facing east. The Temple of Ruğm el-Kursi is an important example of religious architecture in the Levant. It’s not just about the first Iron Age monumental temple in Ammon and in Jordan, but it is also the first excavated monumental sanctuary of the moon god in the Levant. The two reliefs on the door jambs depicted the full moon within the crescent and confirm that the moon god was worshiped there. Because of the reliefs the sanctuary has been dated to Iron Age II. The temple of Ruğm el-Kursi was divided into two or in three rooms and belongs to the „Langraum” temple type, which is known in the region since the middle of the 3rd mill. BC.

Archaeological fieldwork in the Kushite temple in Soniyat (Tergis 40) was conducted from 1997 to 2001 with an additional short season in 2013. A team supervised by Bogdan Żurawski returned to the site in 2016 to continue the excavation of the southern section of the complex. Remains of substantial mud-brick architecture were discovered together with large quantities of small finds (potsherds and objects made of metal, stone and faience) and faunal remains. A compact layer of Nile alluvial deposits, about 0.10 m thick, covering the remains represented evidence most probably of a flood. A single stone column was visible at that level. The spatial distribution of the discovered architectural features matches the temple orientation; they can be interpreted as the remains of a pylon with an entrance flanked by columns.

Examination of the set of preserved gate lintels from the Temple of Hatshepsut in Deir el-Bahari has revealed two models of the iconographic decoration: one that emphasizes pictorial content in the form of scenes of a cultic or symbolic nature, with inscriptions playing merely a complementary role, and the other based on the textual message alone. The use of a given model of lintel decoration appears to be a measure either of the function of the room or, more broadly, of the space, accessed through the gate, or of the context of the wall decoration around the entrance.

Opis:
A geological field investigation of rocks present under and above the temple of Queen Hatshepsut in Upper Egypt was performed. Investigation showed the place prepared for construction of temple was specially prepared. The part of the rocky cliff present at the end of Deir el-Bahari valley was cut by miners (Photo 1a, Fig 1). Observation of temple foundations showed the presence of a thin layer containing remains of human activity represented by fragments of pottery, charcoal, dactyl stones etc. Documenting the area under consideration was the building lot. The construction of architectonic elements of the temple was constructed step by step. Moreover observation of the bases of foundations showed that they are situated on the top surface of limestone layers constituting intercalations in Esna shale or are located on Esna shale cut in the form of steps. At the same places layers of limestones were used as the roof of underground tombs and chapels. They were perforated from the top down. The chambers and corridors of tombs were shafted in soft Esna shale. Rocky material removed from the cut cliff was deposited as the base for construction of the middle terrace of the temple. In conclusion, one can say that the investigation and reconstruction of geology conditions as well as the engineering work helped to understand the general scheme of the phases of the Hatshepsut Temple construction.
Same łupki przycinano pod fundamenty w formie stopni.

The destruction of pagan temples and/or their conversion to churches during the Late Antiquity have been the subject of much study and speculation. For a long period debate on this topic was shaped chiefly by various literary accounts, while archaeological data were somewhat neglected. The purpose of this article is to provide some observations on this issue from a strictly archaeological perspective. The occasion for this are the results of the Polish excavations at Hippos-Sussita. A large basilica that has been unearthed there was built directly on the remains of an earlier Roman temple. The first section of the paper presents elements of the Roman temple which have been identified in various parts of the church area. The second part briefly discusses the other sites in Palestine which have yielded archaeological evidence of churches built over pagan temples.

Jerusalem Temple
Opis:
For most religions, the sign of the divine presence, the sacred, is the temple. Temple buildings, through their form, functional and spatial arrangement, location or design, from the very beginning carried many symbolic meanings and communicated transcendental associations. The temple is also the basic manifestation of sacred architecture, the development of which was associated with complex transformations on many levels. Christian sacred architecture has two archetypes, whose common features combined with theological thought contained in biblical and patristic texts and historical factors have led to the evolution of subsequent forms of temple buildings. The first is a residential house and the second is the Jerusalem Temple. They are at the root of the development of Christian religious architecture. The text of the article, referring to both archetypes, presents the genesis of the Christian temple and indicates its first forms, which were domus ecclesiae, as well as houses of prayer - the first free-standing, autonomous church buildings. The text is also a contribution to further, in-depth research on this subject.
To właśnie one leżą u źródeł rozwoju chrześcijańskiej architektury sakralnej. Tekst artykułu, odnosząc się do obydwu archetypów, przedstawia genezę świątyni chrześcijańskiej oraz sygnalizuje jej pierwsze formy, którymi były domus ecclesiae, a także domy modlitwy – pierwsze wolno stojące, autonomiczne budynki kościelne. Tekst stanowi jednocześnie przyczynek do dalszych, pogłębionych badań w tej tematyce.

Opis:
In a recent article Andrzej Ćwiek (2015) criticized on ideological grounds one of the hypotheses concerning the reconstruction of the Solar Altar in the Complex of the Sun Cult of the Temple of Hatshepsut in Deir el-Bahari. The theoretical reconstruction in question, presented as one of the possibilities in an earlier text by the present author (Dziedzic 2013), called for two obelisks and a sacrificial table standing on the Solar Altar located in the open courtyard of the complex. Ćwiek also pointed to the practical difficulties associated with transportation and placement of stone obelisks. This article describes the technical aspects of transporting and placing obelisks in two different locations. It also contains calculations concerning the weight impact of the altar elements (obelisks) on the altar structure.

Opis:
The reconstruction of the iconographic program of the decoration of the sandstone bases of a group of sphinxes of Hatshepsut lining the processional avenue leading to the Queen’s Mansion of a Million Years in the temple at Deir el-Bahari is the prime focus of this article. The fragments of these statues discovered in the 1920s by the archaeological mission of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York were never published. The pieces were rediscovered in storage in 2005. A theoretical reconstruction has been undertaken, leading the author to identify an unusual iconographical pattern that reflects changes in art introduced in the times of Hatshepsut. The representations on the bases of the royal sandstone sphinxes from the queen’s temple include, among others, rekhyt birds, pat-people and “enemies of Egypt”. They take on a form that departs from that known from other sphinx sculptures.

Tirunallar Saniswaran Temple dedicated to Lord Darbaranyeswaran, a form of Lord Shiva. Temple management imposes restrictions over misuse of these holy ponds. The devotees use the holy water for washing their limbs before entering the temple. Sometimes they make a holy dip into the water; people believe that it can wash all their sins away. Thousands of devotees visit the temple. So, the present investigation deals with the physiochemical properties of Sri Saneeshwaran temple pond water. Analysis of water samples revealed that the physico chemical properties such as pH , Electrical conductivity, Total hardness (mg/l), Ca hardness (mg/l), Mg hardness (mg/l), BOD (mg/l), Total Dissolved solids (mg/l), Suspended solids (mg/l), Chlorides (mg/l), Sulphate (mg/l), Sodium (mg/l), Potassium (mg/l), Dissolved Oxygen (mg/l) and Oil & grease (mg/l)., is varied significantly. Similarly the bacterial load is higher in after mass bathing than in before mass bathing.

Opis:
In a recent article Teresa Dziedzic presented a theoretical reconstruction of the solar altar in the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, with two obelisks standing on the top of it. From both a technological/logistic and an ideological point of view this hypothesis seems untenable. An alternative reconstruction may be offered in agreement with the archaeological evidence and the ideological program of the temple. Statues of the king and of Amun-Ra placed on the altar served as focal points of an early version of the ritual of ‘joining the sun-disk’.
