Opis:
Electromyography (EMG) has been proposed as a method for determining muscle effort in repetitive upper limb tasks, which are often related to cumulative trauma disorders. EMG activity of the finger flexor musculature was investigated during a repetitive hand gripping task having 5 different cycle durations (2 to 6 s), various percentage of work time (and rest) within the work cycle (20% to 80%), and 3 different grip force levels. Thirty healthy adult participants each performed 27 randomly ordered 30-s repetitive hand gripping trials as well as 3 isometric contractions, which were used to normalize data from the hand gripping trials. There was a significant decrease in mean EMG as the duration of the work-rest cycle time increased. At each force level, EMG increased as the percentage of work time within the work-rest cycle increased, but to a greater extent at the highest force level. The results of this study suggest that overall muscle effort, and perhaps muscle fatigue, can be reduced most effectively by modifying the force requirements of the repetitive task. Other variables, such as the percentage of work time within a cycle and overall work cycle time have less effect on the EMG activity level. The results of this study have implications for developing strategies to reduce muscle fatigue during repetitive hand gripping tasks in an effort to reduce the effects of cumulative trauma disorders.

Opis:
This document describes the lessons learned from a United States Navy enterprise integration initiative called Web Enabled Navy (WEN). WEN was initiated in April 2001 with the foci of integrating navy resources and providing a single-point-of-access, Web environment to all business and operational applications. The navy's applications operate within a complex network environment that spans commands afoat, ashore, and overseas. The challenges addressed are similar to those faced by large, multi-national corporations and include some unusual characteristics including islands of intermittently, bandwidth-limited, connected information consumers. Both technical and management lessons learned will be described and denoted as either prerequisite or success factors.

Opis:
To evaluate the effect of handle design characteristics on subjective ratings and pulling forces, meat-hook handles with various handle shapes, sizes, and hook positions were tested in a pulling task. Finger and phalange force data measured by force sensitive resistors and subjective ratings of discomfort were also evaluated. Generally subjects preferred 37-mm double frustum, 30-mm oval handles followed by 30-mm double frustum handles, 37-mm oval, and 45-mm double frustum handles. In the analyses of total pulling force, 37- and 45-mm double frustum handles showed less required pulling force than the others. The averages of finger force contributions to the total pulling force were 27.2, 28.1, 23.9, and 20.8% in order from index to little fingers. The average of phalange force contributions were 28.8, 33.6, and 37.6% for the distal, middle, and proximal phalanges, respectively. The findings illustrate that the pulling finger forces and subjective discomfort ratings were related to the handle shape as well as handle size.
