Opis:
The article deals with adoption of Christian tradition in poetry of Taras Shevchenko. Theoretical basis includes methodological principles of hermeneutics, the philosophicoaesthetic approach to art, cross-cultural methods. On the one hand, the sources of the creative components by Shevchenko’s ethics and aesthetics are related in Christian tradition. On the other hand, as a result of cordocentrist intention of the Ukrainian ethnos, Christian canon was deprived of the big part of rigorism in Old-Kyiv period. Shevchenko’s aesthetic theology is insufficiently investigated but it characterizes the absence of stark categories, dogmas and rituals. It gives an opportunity to speak about the apophatic approach in Shevchenko’s dialectic of God-seeking which appears in the apophatic approach of individual style which also you can find in Old Kyivan authors’ works. The outcome of our investigation proves that the Shevchenko’s adoption of Christian tradition shows the priority of aesthetic and cultural landmarks of Kyiv Christianity.

Opis:
The paper examines the liaison of key motifs and ways represented in the poetry of Taras Melnychuk through the concepts of trauma and violence. Body, home, and language are the main constituent elements of the indigenous space, and their dramatic destruction is a crucial motif in Melnychuk’s poetry. On the one hand, the poet appeals to the holistic, consistent, formulaic language of folklore and mythology as to a mirror of an idyllic and non-fragmented world. On the other hand, dismemberment and fragmentation conceptualized as an act of violence committed against holistic language become the only way of describing the perverse and violent world in circumstances with no language for its expression at all.

Rację, jakie skłaniają nas do szukania łączności z wielkimi skupiskami polonijnymi, nie dają podstaw do zapominania o innych — małych — polskich społecznościach. Opis:
The essay presents a personal approach to Bruno Schulz not only as an outstanding writer and artist, but above all as a figure of imagination that connects the worlds and cultures of Poles, Ukrainians, and Jews. The author defines this function as “worldbuilding” and places it in a process of reconstructing the semantic landscape of Galicia, devastated by World War II and mass deportations, which turned the postwar generations into semantic orphans. This reconstruction does not consist in the impossible return of Poles, Jews, and Ukrainians to Drogobych or Lviv, but in acknowledging the complex past of the region which is our home. Its picture stems from the text of the architectural heritage as well as written texts. Such a text or archetypal metatext has been the work of Bruno Schulz and many others, born in the same area: Joseph Roth, Leopold Sacher-Masoch, Paul Celan, Stanisław Lem, Zbigniew Herbert, Rosa Ausländer, Gregor von Rezzori, Manès Sperber, Georg Drozdowski or Bogdan-Igor Antonych. The task of reconstructing the Regions of Great Heresy has been performed not just in Drogobych, but all over our part of the world – in Lviv, Vilnius, Gdańsk, Wrocław, and Tschernivtsi. We have been trying to heal the wounds inflicted by World War II, which will take long, is by no means simple, and meets much resistance. Like in Schulz’s stories, we have embarked on a long but interesting journey and much is still to be discovered.

Opis:
This article is a part of the bigger work entitled The Ambivalence of Byzantism in Taras Shevchenko’s Writings. The aim of the article is studying the problem of perception and interpretation of the mytheme of Jerusalem in the works by Taras Shevchenko. The crosscultural, semiotic, hermeneutic and comparative analyses allow for discovering deep semantic levels of the “Jerusalem” loci in the works by T. Shevchenko, for clearing out its subtexts and for defining its poetic structure and the levels of the artistic interpretation. In the result of the analyses it has been found that the association “Kiev–Jerusalem” in the works by Shevchenko has its loci of various meanings, which have been formed in the course of a long trajectory within the historic space. The mytheme “Jerusalem” is realized primarily in its Biblical and genetic aspect. The contents of the “Jerusalem idea” proves Shevchenko’s solid knowledge of the Old Testament dogmas in the field of the Judaic history and culture. The resemblance of/between Kiev and Jerusalem is formed on the basis of [the] allegories, the poetical means aiming at the context reading with regard to the urgent social and historic reality. Introducing the mytheme “Jerusalem” into a discourse of fiction, T. Shevchenko accounts for actualization/transposition of its Biblical semantic field/range unto the social, political, cultural and spiritual needs of the epoch. The image of Kiev in Shevchenko’s works has strong sacred characteristics/connotations which indirectly correlate with Christian viewpoints. The importance of Kiev as the spiritual habitable globe is underlined by frequent recollections about numeruous temples, monasteries, saints, monks, icons, pilgrimage traditions, etc. The results of the research can be used for courses in the Ukrainian History of Literature and Theory, for text-books and training aids, for further comparative studies of Shevchenko’s works. The results of the study are addressed to philologists and researchers of the Ukrainian literature. The academic novelty of this article lies in the fact that the mytheme “Jerusalem” in Shevchenko’s works has for the first time become the object of individual research and that theoretic aspects and comparative typological levels of this problem have been elaborated.

The text presents the unique friendship between Ira Aldridge (1807–1867), the first Africa–American tragedian and Taras Shevchenko (1814–1861), Ukrainian artist, poet and painter. They met for a short time in 1858, when Aldridge came to St Petersburg to play Shakespeare with a German troupe. Since their lives’ experiences were similar – Aldridge suffered from racial discrimination, while Shevchenko was born as a serf – their friendship was instantaneous. Shevchenko appreciated Aldridge’s theatrical skills and Aldridge highly valued Shevchenko’s art. Aldridge’s portrait painted by Shevchenko is a memento of their meetings and friendship and is exhibited in the Moscow Tretiakov Gallery.

Opis:
The problem of cultural identity of ethnic communities has been recently rising up on all continents. It has been noticed in the United States that there is a group of uprooted people having neither cultural heritage nor cultural identity. What does cultural identity of an ethnic group or community consist in? Culture constitutes the quality of human needs (both intellectual and material), the ways of satisfying them, behavioral patterns, systems of social activities, and the supply of goods and inherited values (both acquired and created) in the situation of social perception. Moreover, culture is of social character and never constitutes a monolith. It consists of a number of elements which are either common or else characteristic of a given ethnic community designating its identity. Identity can be viewed upon either as an action or as a state. While considered as the action, identity consists in acquiring the goods and values, making use of them and co-creating them. Therefore, T. Parsons treats identity as the main mechanism of socialization and internalization of culture. While considered as the state, identity consists in sharing the same features, goods and values or belonging to the same system of social action. It is defined then by the social status of an individual in a given community (society). From the structural and subjective point of view there are four groups of factors which designate identity and identify all members of a given nation (ethnic community): 1) background, common history;2) tradition, customs, behavioral patterns;3) common social activities, organizations, institutions, ideology;4) symbols, language, art, literature. An individual identifies himself with his society as long as he is able to satisfy his needs. The greater the common good is, the more he is connected and satisfied with his society. Cultural identity depends on quality and quantity of identifying designates. If the designates are important identification is strong, and conversly, if the designates are unimportant (eg. some customs or a hobby easy to give up) identification is weak. Besides, an individual may belong to many social groups and participate in the life of many communities. Thus, his identification may have a number of stages though sometimes with slight differences between them. All the designates of cultural identity may differ only slightly and are typical only of a given community. They lie in the consciousness of its members and help them identify themselves as „we”. It is principal for the problem of socio-cultural identity of ethnic groups to accept the theory of gradation and minimal differences between designates. Similarly, personal identity consists of minimal physiological and psychic differences which help to distinguish different persons. Analogically, socio-cultural identity is based on some even minimal features which make a group of people feel identity and create their own culture through their way of living, behavioral patterns, created goods and values.
