Opis:
On the basis of the analysis of wide temporal monitoring data, a forecast of the integrated hydrochemical indicators of the waters of the Inhul river (Ukraine) was carried out. The performed analysis was also the basis for the determination of a mathematical model of natural fluctuations of the indicators studied. The determined sinusoidal dependence of the integrated water quality indicators allowed determining the average time of fluctuations concerning the processes of self-organisation of river waters. In practice, the developed mathematical models may constitute a valuable support and supplement to the existing models in the field of prediction of self-organization processes of river waters. They may also contribute to even more effective minimization of undesirable effects of anthropogenic impact on aquatic ecosystems.

The dynamics of hydrochemical parameters of surface waters from the upper, middle and lower reaches of the river was analyzed. On the basis of the analysis of temporal and spatial monitoring data, a comprehensive assessment of the environmental status of the Inhulets river (Ukraine) waters by hydrochemical indicators was carried out. The study performed a comparative analysis of the river water quality assessment using different methods: an integrated assessment based on the calculation of water pollution indexes, pollution rate. A result of the evaluation of water quality in certain classes: in terms of ammonium ions and BOD5 – III quality class, the water is slightly polluted; phosphate content – V quality class, water is very low in the bottom; according to the content of suspended solids, in phosphates and BOD5 – III class of water quality, water is polluted; by a concentration of chlorides – V class of quality, degree of purity – very dirty; the value of suspended solids and chlorides – III class; in terms of the sulfate content – IV class. In general, the very excessive concentration of substances in the middle course remains stable, the environmental state is poor (quality class IV).

The study area of the Nida valley was examined to investigate variations in groundwater and surface water levels, as well as the interaction between them. In the valley, there were three branches. The two actives were the Nida River itself and the Smuga Umianowicka branch while the Stara Nida branch was dry during the measurement session. Over a 12-month period from June 2021 to June 2022, 7 monitoring points were equipped with piezometers, comprising 5 groundwater points and 2 surface water points. The monitoring frequency was set to 30 minutes. The results of this research indicate that there are significant differences in the water level at the same observed point at different times. This study demonstrates seasonal changes in both surface water and groundwater levels with higher levels in autumn and winter and lower levels in spring and summer, which are closely tied to the changes in meteorological conditions during the research period, such as precipitation and air temperature. The study results also indicate that during summer and winter at the Nida River and its riparian area, losing stream is the primary process occurring in the studied reach. Conversely, during autumn and spring, the main process is gaining stream. At the human-maintained Smuga Umianowicka branch and in its riparian area, losing stream is the main process during summer and autumn, and gaining stream is the main process during spring. During winter, losing stream and gaining stream processes can occur simultaneously, and neither process takes place mainly.

During the current research the level of groundwater (piezometers P2,P3,P4) and surface water (reservoir B) contamination during landfill operation and after its closure were examined. 113 samples of groundwater and surface water were collected from spring 2005 until spring 2012, i.e. three years after the landfill closure. The samples were analyzed for pH, EC, PAH, TOC and six heavy metals: Cr, Hg, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cu. The heavy metal concentration in groundwater and surface water both during landfill operations and after the landfill closure remained on a similar level and did not exceed permissible levels determined by WHO. Cr was an exception, because its concentra¬tion, during landfill exploitation, reached the value of 0.028 mg/l in surface water. In all examined after the landfill was closed a decrease in the EC value was observed. With the landfill closure the TOC concentration in groundwater increased from 1.8–3.4 to 2.07–3.6 mg/l and the PAH concentration from 0.01 to 0.02 mikrog/l. It may be attributed to a slowdown of decomposition in landfill. An additional PAH source for ground and surface water are surface run-offs form road pavements, yards and parking lots. The remaining high TOC level in a surface reservoir after the landfill closure is also a result of eurotrophisation, which enriches water with organic substances. Seasonal changes in the concentration of pollutants were observed, resulting both from their dilution by atmospheric precipitation (EC, pH, Cd, Cu) and due to washing them out from neighboring areas and enriching with them the analyzed water (Cu, PAH, Hg).

A possible use of synchronous culture of Chlorella vulgaris algae has been examined as a shortterm bioassay for water quality control. Experiments were performed with algae cultivated in liquid media prepared with distilled water (control) and with water aliquots sampled from the Goczałkowice Reservoir. It has been demonstrated that changes in the absorbance (at 680 nm) of algae liquid synchronous culture and the rate of algae cellular division may be useful as criteria for water quality control. Changes in the algae metabolic activity are clearly a sign of the July flood and autumnal water quality changes.

The research analyzed seasonal changes of the oxygen regime and related indicators on the example of water objects of the Ukrainian Polesie Region. The region shows different directions of economic use. Zebrafish (Danio rerio Hamilton–Buchanan) and the Prussian carp (Carassius auratus gibelio Bloch) were used as test objects to investigate survival responses. Dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration in water, pH values and temperatures were determined by standard methods. Based on research results, the main problems were determined pertaining to the oxygen regime of investigated waters, i.e. the increase in temperature and toxicity of the aquatic environment in the summer. A rather dangerous decrease in DO concentration, almost up to the levels of maximum allowable concentration (MAC) (4.10 mg∙dm–3 in group E1 and 6.07 mg∙dm–3 in group E2), was observed in August and it was typical for the reservoirs with a slow water movement. Flowing river waters (group E3) were eliminated due to their better aeration compared to other groups. The correlation analysis based on the presented data revealed a high and average degree of probable correlation between the DO concentration and water temperature, as well as an average degree of correlation with general toxicity determined on sensitive species of D. rerio, and in group E1 on the persistent species C. auratus gibelio as well. The interrelations and equations of the rectilinear regression can be used to predict the oxygen regime of the waters investigated and other surface waters having similar problems.

Organic substances in water, both of natural and synthetic origin, especially their share in water treatment by-products can pose a threat to drinkers. That is why adsorption, as a very effective process of dissolved organic compounds removal is commonly used in surface water treatment systems. For process design and optimization, mathematical models both mechanistic and statistics are created. The results of the investigation of granular activated carbon (GAC) bed adsorption in a pilot plant with a capacity of 3 m3/h have been presented. Two systems have been tested – without ozonation and with ozonation before GAC adsorption. The models of the kinetics of GAC adsorption capacity exhaustion, the model of minimal GAC bed depth (adsorption zone) for assumed process efficiency (C/CO), as well as the model of adsorption zone movement velocity to the bottom of GAC bed, have been created. For the state of adsorptive equilibrium, the first model enables the determination of the isotherm parameters of the Freundlich type, the two other models are used for the calculation of GAC bed run time for the certain bed depth and assumed efficiency. It has been shown that in this case (water pollution, GAC type, pre-treatment) ozonation plays a minor role.

Opis:
Coagulation is a process commonly used in water treatment, especially for surface water. This process aims to effectively remove organic matter [1, 2] especially precursors of oxidation and disinfection by-products [3–5], whose creation potential is related to absorption values at 254 nm (UV254) [6] Due to a very large variability in surface water composition over the course of the year and different contamination levels dependent on water source location, it is important to optimally choose coagulant type and dosage. Such optimization is difficult due to the presence of a large number of coagulants on the market. Świderska-Bróż and Rak [7] and Lee et al. [8] have shown that prehydrolyzed coagulants are less sensitive to changes in temperature and pH of the input water than classic ones. Lin et al. [9] suggest however that the effectiveness of coagulation mainly depends on the type and structure of organic matters present in waters, and to a much lesser degree on pH and temperature.

Humic substances are a natural admixture of surface water and determine the level of organic pollution of water and colour intensity. Application of coagulation process in surface water treatment allows for decrease turbidity and colour of water, as well as organic matter content. In Poland most drinking water treatment plants use aluminium sulphate as a coagulant. Research works on pre-hydrolyzed coagulants, e.g. polyaluminium chlorides (general formula Aln(OH)mCl3n-m) are also carried out. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the coagulation process using polyaluminium chlorides with different basicity, in reducing the level of pollution of surface water with organic substances. Apart from the typical indicators used to evaluate the content of organic compounds, the potential for trihalomethanes formation THM-FP was also determined. The influence of the type of coagulant (low, medium, highly alkaline) on the efficiency of organic compound removal, determined as total organic carbon TOC, oxidisability OXI, absorbance UV254, was stated. Under the conditions of the coagulation (pH 7.2–7.4, temperature of 19–21°C), the best results were obtained using highly alkaline polyaluminium chlorides PAX-XL19F, PAX-XL1905 and PAX-XL1910S, decrease in TOC and OXI by 43–46%, slightly worse – 40–41% using low alkaline PAX18. Using the medium alkaline coagulants PAX-XL61 and PAXX-XL69, 30–35% removal of organic matter was obtained. Despite various effects of dissolved organic carbon removal, depending on the used coagulant, THM-FP in purified water did not differ significantly and ranged from 10.0 to 10.9 mgCHCl3 m-3. It was by 37–42% lower than in surface water.

The intensive agricultural use of the land affects both quantity and quality of river water in the catchment area. Such impact is visible also in the Szreniawa River catchment in the Małopolskie Voivodeship. The combination of intensive plowing and soil susceptibility to water erosion are the main causes of soil and nutrients depletion during the heavy rainfall. The aim of the study is to determine changes in the water quality in the Szreniawa River catchment compared to the agriculture use and precipitation level. The quality of surface water has been analysed in the river catchment area in three sampling points. The concentration of the total suspended soils in the samples collected after heavy rainfall in August 2017 reached a value of 837 mg·dm–3. The average concentrations of N-NO3 in the years of 2016–2019 ranged from 0.16 to 13.46 mg·dm–3, with the highest values in the summer (up to 13.46 mg·dm–3). The concentration of N-NH4 and P-PO4 in the Szreniawa water was affected by precipitation. The highest value of average concentration of N-NH4 3.00 mg·dm–3 was recorded in the autumn of 2019 in the middle section of the river. The highest value of P-PO4 0.90 mg·dm–3 was recorded in the autumn of 2019 mostly due to water erosion of the loess areas. Erosion has been caused by the short-term heavy rainfall. As a result, suspended solids, soluble and insoluble phosphorus compounds leaked to the river.

The paper "The influence of impuriries on the surface water of the Upper Biebrza Basin" presents description of areas, environmental elements and the description of the potential pollution sources in Upper Biebrza Basin. The article presents a short description of the municipalities, located in the immediate vicinity of the Biebrza River. They are: Lipsk, Sztabin and Nowy Dwor. The Biebrza Valley is an area of great natural significance, mainly due to its largest wetlands in Central and Western Europe. Their well-being depends mainly on the hydrologic conditions. Biebrza National Park and the area of the Upper Biebrza Basin, have been reported by Poland to the the Ramsar Convention, NATURA 2000, BirdLife International classification. Therefore, water, as a basic element of shaping the whole Biebrza Valley habitat is also protection subject, including constant monitoring of water quality. The aim of the article was to characterize the Upper Biebrza Basin which covers the area between the Sztabin Village and the Polish border with Belarus.

Opis:
Polish water resources in comparison to other European countries are small. It is one of the factors leading to increased interest in monitoring tests for their quality. Heavy metals are major water pollutants in Poland. The aim of this study was to determine seasonal variability in concentrations of cadmium, lead, zinc and copper in various reservoirs and water courses in the Wielkopolska region. Water samples were collected from lakes, large and small rivers and drainage ditches. These water bodies differ in land use in the surrounding. These were mostly rural. The study was conducted during the growing season from May to December 2012. Quantitative analysis of heavy metals was performed on the AA spectrometer Agilent 280Z. The results showed high seasonal variation in heavy metal contents in different water bodies. The concentrations of cadmium and zinc mainly depend on the date of discharge to water. Lead concentrations were caused by emissions and depended mainly on cultivation measures in fields. The highest concentration of copper was observed in the lakes, which could be due to the use of compounds that eliminate algal blooms. Under Polish law, all water bodies are classified into water quality classes I or II intended for drinking. Living conditions for cyprinids and salmonids were satisfactory in all the locations.
Były to głównie tereny rolnicze. We wszystkich miejscach były spełnione warunki do życia ryb karpiowatych i łososiowatych.

Opis:
Over a number of years the quality of surface water in Poland has been monitored and assessed. Water quality assessments are published every year by specialized institutions. The criteria of assessment used by different regions (voivodships) have not been standardised. The Water Frame Directive has enforced the application of uniform assessment procedures. This directive emphasises mainly the biological quality of water and essentially changes the previous classification methods. In the paper the author has described some aspects of Water Frame Directive, the ways the surface water had been classified over the past 25 years as well the projected aims in this area.

Opis:
Progressive environmental degradation results in an increase in the number of waters that do not meet the standards in force. Surface waters are particularly vulnerable to pollution because they are receivers of purified water and agricultural or industrial wastewater flow. In addition, the local increase in temperature and the increase amount and availability of nutrients associated with wastewater discharged improves the microbial growth and thus increase their quantity. The treated sewage must meet certain requirements regarding their physicochemical and biological parameters. However, the regulations do not require to check microbiological quality by treatment plants, so the purpose of the study was to determine the impact of discharge of purified wastewater by the "Warta" sewage treatment plant down to Warta river. The study was conducted in 2008-2016 at three collection points near the place of discharge of purified sewage from Warta SA sewage treatment plant. It has been demonstrated that the process of sewage treatment is not enough in terms of microbiological pollution because the water samples collected at the points behind the discharge site of the effluent into the river were characterized by increased abundance and microbiological diversity.

Opis:
One explicit and three implicit finite volume method schemes of the Roe type are presented in the paper. The properties and applicability of these methods for modelling unsteady, rapidly varied, open channel flow are investigated. The schemes are used for numerical simulation of one-dimensional extreme flow described by de Saint-Venant equations. The computational results are compared with each other and an analytical (exact) solution to an idealized dam-break problem. The classical versions of general scheme implicit in time - fully implicit and trapezoidal scheme - are not restricted by a stability condition, like an explicit one, however they add some numerical diffusion and dispersion errors to the solution. The modification of parameter , originally proposed for a box scheme of finite difference method, has improved computational properties of the general one-step implicit scheme. This version of finite volume scheme of the Roe type implicit in time can be recommended for modelling and simulation of transient flows in storm sewers and open channel networks.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of physical and chemical tests of surface water samples taken from the areas of the Ostrzeszów Commune, which is part of the Ostrzeszów County, located in the southern part of the Wielkopolska Province. The Ostrzeszów commune is included in the urban-rural areas. The physicochemical analysis of surface waters covered samples taken from seventeen measurement and control points from places as accessible as possible. The water quality was assessed in accordance with the applicable regulations of the Minister of the Environment. Surface waters were characterized by typical variability for agricultural areas, i.e. slightly alkaline, pH in the range of 7.5-8.45; specific conductivity in the range of 246-512 μS/cm; turbidity in the range of 1.7-10.5 NTU; total hardness in the range of 1.6-3.2 mmol∙dm-3 Ca2+, Mg2+; alkalinity in the range of 66-142 mg∙dm-3 CaCO3 ; chloride content in the range of 19-47 mg/dm3 Cl-; content of biogenic compounds, ie: nitrites in the range of 0.02-0.36 mg∙dm-3 N-NO2 - ; nitrates in the range of 0.05 - 4,9 mg∙dm-3 N-NO3 - ; ammonium ion in the range of 0.04-0.94 mg∙dm-3 N-NH4 + ; the content of orthophosphate in the range of 0.11-1,56 mg∙dm-3 P-PO4 3-. The content of metals, i.e. manganese Mn, Fe iron, was characterized by high variability depending on the location of the sampling site (Mn manganese in the range of 0.006-0.22 mg∙dm-3, Fe iron in the range of 0.02-0.28 mg∙dm-3, potassium K in the range of 10-13 mg∙dm-3). In all analyzed samples, the presence of copper Cu, nickel Ni and zinc Zn was not detected. The quality of surface waters of the Ostrzeszów commune, in addition to natural hydrological factors, is affected by areas covered by agricultural activity and the evident lack of developed sewerage system in the analyzed sampling regions. The research carried out at the turn of the year showed that the use of artificial and natural fertilizers in cultivated areas contributed to the increase in the content of biogenic and mineral substances in surface.

Opis:
Water quality is an environmental priority for irrigation in rainfed agriculture. Recently, water quality has been affected by the uncontrolled disposal of wastewater, the use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture and, most significantly, by the excessive exploitation of water resources during the low season. The basin of the Maffragh in the Algerian north-east real is fed by two main rivers: Wadi El Kebir East and Bounnamoussa. From its source, the stream is continually contaminated with domestic and agricultural discharges through the tributaries causing a significant deterioration in water quality. In order to know the current state of water quality in the Maffragh basin and to determine its suitability for irrigation without any prior treatment, research has been conducted in the two streams at representative sampling points in catchment areas used for irrigating crops. To assess the quality of water and detectable compounds monitoring, laboratory methods are used. The various volumetric and colorimetric assays were carried out according to Jean Rodier. Organic parameters such as nitrites, ammonium and phosphates, were measured using a UV/VIS 6705 JENWAY spectrophotometer, at wavelengths of 543 nm, 630 nm and 880 nm respectively for nitrites, ammonium and phosphates. The BOD5 and COD parameter was measured using a DIN EN 1899-1-H51 spectrophotometer and DIN ISO15705: 2002 spectrophotometer. The performed analyses on conductivity shows oscillating values ranging between 425 and 495 μS∙cm–1 for January 2018, while for the low water level of July 2018 the conductivity varies between 433 and 796 μS∙cm–1; this parameter is determinant for water quality assessment and its use for irrigation. Beside the conductivity test, the Riverside–Wilcox diagram was applied, to combine conductivity and sodium absorption rate (SAR). The obtained results of the two seasons show satisfactory results in the applicability of the water to irrigate in the basin.

In this work, the studies of various physico-chemical parameters of surface waters originated from the selected area of oil exploitation in the south of Poland are presented. The water samples were collected from streams and ponds or directly from surface tanks situated in the vicinity of operating wells. The observed values of different parameters like pH, odór, color, turbidity, electroconductivity, concentration of sulfate, chloride, nitrate, iron, calcium, magnesium, ammonium, alkanity, dissolved oxygen or petroleum contamination of samples were compared with standard values recommended by the WHO (World Health Organization) and the relevant Polish Regulation. Preliminary studies show that investigated surface waters are slightly affected by anthropogenic pollution. The main two sources of contamination of water from the study area are agriculture and mining industry.

The implementation or optimization of the coagulation process requires prior preliminary tests. Standard Jar-Test method is time-consuming, inaccurate and may not work well, especially for the waters characterized by high variability of quality parameters. Zeta Potential Isoelectric Point (IEP) analysis may give fast and precise data on the coagulant type and dose required for maintaining an efficient coagulation process. The research objects included the surface waters taken directly from the Mała Panew and Odra rivers. The zeta potential and set coagulant dose dependence was measured for each sample. Four aluminum-based coagulants with different characteristics were used in this research: aluminum sulfate (Alum), polyaluminum chloride (PAC), dialuminum chloride pantahydroxide (PACl), polyaluminum chloride hydroxide sulfate (PACS). Charge neutralization effectiveness, by means of Zeta Potential IEP analysis, was the basis for the choice of the most effective coagulant doses. The coagulation process efficacy was based on the parameters of the treated water (pH, turbidity, color, alkalinity), reduction of organic matter (Abs254, Total Organic Carbon (TOC), Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC)) and residual aluminum contamination. The Zeta Potential utility evaluation was based on the DOC reduction.

This paper describes a way of determining selected water parameters using a prototype of a remote-controlled catamaran. The remote controlling allows to steer the boat and to manage the measurement process from the shore. It is possible to monitor the water parameters online as well as to store them and analyze them afterwards. The measured parameters are determined mainly using potentiometric methods and include several ion concentrations. The system is orientated towards monitoring breeding ponds or other similar surface waters. The mechanical construction of the catamaran, its electronic circuits and implemented software are described in detail in the paper. Conclusions obtained from preliminary tests are also included. The described construction allows analysts to perform simple and inexpensive remote measurements or assessments of water quality and reduces the time of such analysis in comparison to traditional sampling.

The study aimed to assess the surface water quality in the Hau Giang province in 2021 at 44 locations (with a frequency of 5 times per year) using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Cluster Analysis (CA) and GIS. Surface water quality was compared with the national technical regulation on surface water quality (QCVN 08-MT:2015/BTNMT, column A1) and Water Quality Index (WQI). The results showed that the surface water quality parameters of total suspended solids, organic matters, nutrients, coliform, and Fe far exceeded the allowable limits, while the Cl-, color, and CN- parameters were within the allowable limits of QCVN 08-MT:2015/BTNMT, column A1. The values of WQI showed that the water quality of the Hau Giang province ranged from poor to excellent. The water quality at the Vam Cai Dau and Hau River areas could only be exploited for water supply, but appropriate treatment is needed. CA divided the monitoring months into three distinct clusters and reduced the sampling sites from 44 to 33 locations, reducing 25% of monitoring cost per year. PCA revealed three main factors which could explain 69.0% of the variation in water quality. The water pollution sources were mainly industrial and agricultural discharges, domestic and urban activities, transportation activities, salinity, hydrological conditions and water runoff. The current findings provide useful information which support local environmental managers and water supply companies for safe and sustainable.

Water is one of the most important natural resources for all living organisms, including humans. Water consumption is increasing over the years as a result of the increase in the number of people, and at the same time, the causes of pollution of surface water sources increase. Water pollution is one of the most important causes of diseases and the transmission of infection to the organisms that use it. Also, the quality of agricultural crops is linked to the quality of the water used for irrigation. As a result, there was a need to monitor and evaluate the main water sources to maintain the quality of their water suitable for use by humans and other organisms. As is well known, it is difficult to evaluate the water quality of large samples with concentrations of many parameters using traditional methods, which depend on comparing experimentally determined parameter values with current standards. As a result, over the past century and the present, many methods of assessing water quality have emerged. This research aims to introduce the most important indices of water quality used at present to assess the quality of surface water for drinking and irrigation purposes, as well as the history of these methods and their development over time and their most important advantages, in addition to a group of the most important research that used these methods during the past few years.

Opis:
Wody powierzchniowe najczęściej oprócz organicznych i mineralnych cząstek koloidalnych powodujących mętność zawierają substancje rozpuszczone, w tym humusowe, nadające wodzie zapach i barwę. Substancje humusowe (SH) będące wielkocząsteczkowymi produktami humifikacji cząstek roślinnych i zwierzęcych, mają bliżej nieokreśloną strukturę chemiczną z fragmentami alifatycznymi i aromatycznymi o różnym stopniu rozgałęzienia.
In general surface waters have high colour and turbidity. Colour is caused by humic substances (SH), macromolecular compounds formed as a result of humification of vegetal and animal remnants. SH due to their sorption ability of many harmful organic pollutants produced by human and their ability of forming complexes with heavy metals, are removed from water during its treatment. The coagulation process, which is most often used for this purpose, can be intensified by adding aiding substances to water, which make sedimentation of formed flocs easier and adsorb pollutants at the same time. This paper presents results of research on the efficiency of SH removal during the coagulation with aluminium sulphate or iron sulphate in the presence of the aiding substances. The following aiding substances were applied: bentonite, activated bentonite and two kinds of powdered activated carbons, which have different surface charge. Experiments were performed in matrixes 25 according to Yates' method and then the main effects and interactions were calculated. Factors like initial concentration of humic substances, pH, dosage time, dose of aiding substance, as well as hardness of water were variable. Basis of colour and turbidity of the treated water the efficiency of coagulation was defined. In this paper the influence of chosen factors and electrokinetic potential of particles, which took part in the process on the efficiency of water treatment was defined. The interactions between selected factors were revealed. Results of the carried out research show that humic substances are removed more effectively in the acid environment. In this environment their carboxyl groups are less dissociated than in alkali or neutral environment and that's why SH have less electronegative surface charge. The research also showed that due to effectiveness of turbidity removal it is better to dose the aiding substances after the coagulant. This dependence results from surface charge of coagulated particles. Electropositive hydroxy complexes with humic substances connect with electronegative aiding substances more willingly than with electronegative SH.

In Indonesia, the river water quality has been determined based on Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia No. 22 of 2021. This study aimed to determine the quality of surface water from the Damsari, Jabawi, Kleblow, and Komba Rivers in Jayapura Regency based on the monitoring data from 2016 to 2019. The CCME-WQI method is used to determine the status of rivers based on river water quality standards (class 1 to class 4). The results of the study showed that the parameters of water temperature, TDS, pH, $NH_3, NO_3^-, SO_4^-2$, surfactant, oil/grease, Cr-(IV), Mn, Fe, Fecal Coliform, and Total Coliform were still in accordance with the quality standard. Meanwhile, TSS, COD, BOD, Total Phosphate, Hg, and Ni have exceeded the water quality standard, where the dominant pollutant source is an anthropogenic waste. On the basis of the WQI average value, the four rivers are not suitable as a source of drinking water (Poor-Marginal; 41.33 – 58.25). The Jabawi River can be used as a recreational facility, but it must be under special management (Fair; 69.75), while the other three rivers are not suitable (Marginal; 52.00 – 61.67). The Jabawi and Komba Rivers are in the Fair category (75.50 and 69.33) to support aquatic life, while the Damsari and Kleblow Rivers are in the Marginal category (59.00 and 61.25). The water quality of the four rivers is very good and suitable to be used as a water source for irrigation (Good category; 80.00 – 88.00). The strategies for controlling river water pollution and increasing the role of the government, stakeholders, and the community are needed.

Opis:
The results of studies focused on membrane fouling during surface water treatment by use, of ultrafiltration, coagulation/sedimentation/ultrafiltration and in-line coagulation/ultrafiltration processes were presented. Medium- and low-molecular organic compounds (NOM) that are not rejecting in UF/MF process tan be remove by use of pre-coagulation. The surface water used in the tests coming from Smieszek Lake located in Zory (Silesia province, Poland) contained organic matter of about 14 mg/dm3 TOC. Aluminum su1fate was used in both coagula-tions (4.9 mg Al/dm3, pH = 7.0). Molecular mass distribution in feed water and permeates was determined by use of high performance size exclusion (HPSEC). Applications of coagulation/sedimentation/ultrafiltration and in-line coagulation/ultrafiltration processes in water treatment allowed to get better quality of permeate than in ultrafiltration process alone. The smallest flux decline and the highest membrane capacity were observed in in-line coagulation/ultrafiltration process. Molecular weight distribution showed that integrated/hybrid processes allow rejecting molecules > 10 kDa in the highest degree. These molecules were responsible for membrane blocking as they deposit on surface and/or in membrane pores. The paper also presents impact hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity of NOM on UF membrane fouling. From isolated fractions the hydrophobic fraction of NOM caused the largest flux decline, while hydrophilic fraction - the smallest. Transphilic fraction pollutants were removed in highest grade. They might have a significant influence on membrane fouling.
Przedstawiono wyniki badania intensywności foulingu membran podczas oczyszczania wody naturalnej w procesie jednostkowym ultrafiltracji, zintegrowanym koagulacji klasycznej/ultrafiltracji oraz hybrydowym koagulacji in-line/ultrafiltracji zawierającej naturalne substancje organiczne (NOM). W procesie koagula-cji zastosowano siarczan glinu (4,9 mg Al/dm3, pH = 7,0). W strumieniach powstających podczas procesu oczyszczania wyznaczono rozkład mas molekularnych za pomocą HPSEC. Zastosowanie układu hybrydowego/zintegrowanego do oczyszczania wody zawierającej substancje organiczne pozwoliło na uzyskanie permeatu lepszej jakości niż w bezpośredniej UF. Ponadto proces koagulacji in-line/UF w największym stopniu zmniejszył fouling membrany UF i w konsekwencji polepszył jej wydajność.

Opis:
The interaction between groundwater and surface water plays an important role in the function of riparian ecosystems and sustainable water resource management. Hydraulic fracturing, an unconventional oil and gas well stimulation method, has increased dramatically in North America in an effort to exploit previously inaccessible shale oil and gas reserves. Hydraulic fracturing often requires several thousand cubic meters of water to fracture the source formations. Use of such a high volume of water has raised considerable public concern over the sustainability of this activity and the potential impacts on surface water and groundwater. This paper provides a review of the published literature addressing the effects of water withdrawal for hydraulic fracturing on surface water and groundwater. The potential effects of such withdrawal are: decreased volume of water in rivers, streams, lakes and aquifers; alteration of natural flow regimes; regional water shortages during periods of drought; creating conflicts with other water users in water-stressed regions; inadequate downstream water availability; reduced downstream water quality for human uses, due to less water availability for dilution; and degradation of habitat and aquatic ecosystem function, impacting local wildlife. This review demonstrates that relatively little attention has been paid to quantify and understand these interactions, and suggests that there is a significant need for further research in this area to address the currently limited availability of data.

The article describes modern anthropogenic load on the surface water of the Southern Bug River Basin in a changing climate. The main water users-pollutants of the Southern Bug River Basin in Vinnytska and Mykolaivska regions were identified. The water quality of the surface water of the Southern Bug River in time and space (along the river stream) was analyzed. The water quality of the Southern Bug River was assessed by complex indices for different water users. In order to assess water quality, it is recommended to use complex indices that take into account the effect of the total action of pollutants. The self-purification potential and capability of restoration in space (along the river stream) of the aquatic ecosystem of the Southern Bug River was established for 2019. The results of the study allow us to state that the use of surface water of the Southern Bug River Basin for drinking, fishery, cultural and recreational needs is related to certain environmental risks. It is recommended to carry out the environmental protection measures aimed at adjusting the priorities of economic activity, reduction of wastewater discharge and increase in the water content of the river by regulating the operation of energy complexes.

Developments in agriculture, industry, and urban life have caused the deterioration of water resources, such as rivers and reservoirs in terms of their quality and quantity. This includes the Saguling Reservoir located in the Citarum Basin, Indonesia. A review of previous studies reveals that the water quality index (WQI) is efficient for the identification of pollution sources, as well as for the understanding of temporal and spatial variations in reservoir water quality. The NSFWQI (The National Sanitation Foundation water quality index) is one of WQI calculation methods. The NSFWQI is commonly used as an indicator of surface water quality. It is based on nitrate, phosphate, turbidity, temperature, faecal coliform, pH, DO, TDS, and BOD. The average NSFWQI has been 48.42 during a dry year, 43.97 during a normal year, and 45.82 during a wet year. The WQI helped to classify water quality in the Saguling Reservoir as “bad”. This study reveals that the strongest and most significant correlation between the parameter concentration and the WQI is the turbidity concentration, for which the coefficient correlation is 0.821 in a dry year, and faecal coli, for which the coefficient correlation is 0.729 in a dry year. Both parameters can be used to calculate the WQI. The research also included a nitrate concentration distribution analysis around the Saguling Reservoir using the Inverse Distance Weighted method.

Opis:
River-lake systems comprise chains of lakes connected by rivers and streams that flow into and out of them. The contact zone between a lake and a river can act as a barrier, where inflowing matter is accumulated and transformed. Magnesium and calcium are natural components of surface water, and their concentrations can be shaped by various factors, mostly the geological structure of a catchment area, soil class and type, plant cover, weather conditions (precipitation- evaporation, seasonal variations), land relief, type and intensity of water supply (surface runoffs and groundwater inflows), etc. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of a river-lake system on magnesium and calcium concentrations in surface water (inflows, lake, outflow) and their accumulation in bottom deposits. The study was performed between March 2011 and May 2014 in a river-lake system comprising Lake Symsar with inflows, lying in the Olsztyn Lakeland region. The study revealed that calcium and magnesium were retained in the water column and the bottom deposits of the lake at 12.75 t Mg year-1 and 1.97 t Ca year-1. On average, 12.7±1.2 g of calcium and 1.77±0.9 g of magnesium accumulated in 1 kg of bottom deposits in Lake Symsar. The river-lake system, which received pollutants from an agricultural catchment, influenced the Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations in the water and the bottom deposits of Lake Symsar. The Tolknicka Struga drainage canal, to which incompletely treated municipal wastewater was discharged, also affected Ca2+ and Mg2+ levels, thus indicating the significant influence of anthropogenic factors.

Opis:
The most frequent cause of salmonelloses are food poisonings. However, many studies prove the occurrence and possibility of survival of rods of the genus Salmonella in lakes. The bacteria are often isolated from water sources, which act as a bacterial reservoir. Rods of Salmonella are constantly released to the environment, which results in infections of people and animals. In comparison with other microorganisms, bacteria of the genus Salmonella are characterized by a high survival rate in water environments, particularly in waters of highly eutrophicated lakes. Temperature, the shortage of nutrients, osmotic stress and light has the most negative effect on their survival. Due to its common accessibility, water is an environment which plays an essential role in spread of diseases. The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of selected temperatures on the survival rate of bacilli Salmonella Enteritidis, and the dynamics of quantitative changes of the bacteria in time in bathing waters used for recreation, tested under laboratory conditions. As well as to determine the dynamic of quantitative changes of the bacteria in time under laboratory conditions. The samples for the study were collected from a lake in the Bydgoszcz district. In the conducted experiment it was indicated that Salmonella Enteritidis survived longer in water at 4°C (51 days), as compared with 20°C (39 days). In the present study the elimination rate of bacteria population, according to the analysis of regression, amounted to 0.16 log daily at 4°C, whereas at 20°C it assumed a value of 0.15 log daily. Consequently, it may be concluded that a lower temperature has a more stabilizing effect on rods of the genus Salmonella.

Monitoring of surface waters within the transboundary section of the Western Bug River showed, that during 2014–2018, a significant excess of the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) was observed for some substances for fish ponds. As a result of this, the water in the river for these substances was rated as “dirty” in terms of purity and corresponded to water quality class IV, namely: phosphorus was observed to exceed the MPC at the observation point Ambukіv village in 2015 (9.7 times), for manganese – an excess of the MPC at the observation point Ambukіv village in 2018 (9.7 times) and in point Zabuzhzhia village in 2014 (7.9 times), 2015 (8.0 times), 2017 (7.1 times), 2018 (8.3 times); for the total iron – the exceeding of MPC at the observation point Ambukіv village in 2016 (5.95 times) and 2017 (6.13 times); at the observation point Ustilug town in 2016 (5.23 times); in the observation point Zabuzhzhia village in 2016 (9.44 times) and 2017 (5.27 times). The assessment of the surface waters based on the determination of the pollution factor showed that during the study period their quality did not deteriorate but did not meet the norms. In general, surface waters of the river correspond to the second class of quality and are characterized as “poorly polluted” waters by the level of pollution.

Opis:
Water quality along the Waratah Rivulet in the Woronora Lake Catchment, New South Wales (NSW), Australia, has been monitored during the last three years by the Sydney Catchment Authority. Water quality data shows changes in chemical composition due to cracking of streambeds and rockbars, and diversion of surface water into subsurface routes in the Hawkesbury Sandstone aquifer. Water quality upstream of the longwall panels is comparable to nearly pristine water in creeks and rivers flowing in similar sandstone bedrock environments and to limited water quality data collected prior to mining. A segment of the Waratah Rivulet, where subsidence and cracking of streambeds and rockbars has occurred, is causing surface water to be redirected into subsurface fracture systems, mix with groundwater already present in the aquifer and partially reappear downstream. This subsurface flow in the shallow fractured sandstone aquifer causes the chemical composition and water quality to change as an effect of water–rock interactions. Salinity, iron, manganese and many cation and anion concentrations increase, whereas oxygen is significantly depleted. Mobilisation of barium and strontium from the rock mass indicates fast chemical dissolution reactions between the subsurface flow and carbonate minerals. Other metals mobilised include zinc, cobalt and nickel. Subsurface water partially discharges from underground receptors downstream of the area impacted by longwall mining. The discharged water is rapidly oxidised by atmospheric oxygen, causing precipitation of iron and manganese oxides / hydroxides out of solution. Hydrogeochemical modelling indicates the dominant iron minerals precipitated out from the water are in this environment goethite, lepidocrocite and ferrihydrite. The paper discusses changes in surface water and groundwater chemistry due to subsurface flow and water–rock interaction, the hydrogeochemical processes responsible for changes in water chemistry, as well as changes in water quality along the rivulet.

For experiments, the drug was used at concentrations of 0,01; 0,001; 0,0001; 0,00001 and 0,000001 mg/ml. Bacteria strains were incubated with carmustine for 3 and 24 hours. Experimental data showed different sensitivity of applied promoters for the same concentrations of carmustine. Obtained results indicated that, recA::gfpmut2, katG::gfpmut2 and sodA::gfpmut2 genetic systems were sensitive to carmustine, especially at the concentrations of 0,001; 0,0001 and 0,00001 mg/ml. The strongest reactivity was noticed for recA promoter (FI = 14,64). The results indicated that gfp E. coli strains with recA, katG and sodA could be potentially useful for monitoring of cyto- and genotoxic effect of pharmacist residues in surface water.

Water samples were taken in test points localized on rivers cut by varied amount of traffic routes and roads with different surface quality. In water was determined: total suspension, CODMn, chlorides, sum of petroleum hydrocarbons, mineral oil index and lead. The result of conducted research in water samples was content of petroleum-derivative substances expressed in mineral oil index and sum of hydrocarbons, lead and chlorides, high concentration of easily decomposable substances and variable suspension value. Presented material indicates problem’s seriousness and proves necessity of making more.
W wodzie oznaczano: zawiesinę ogólną, ChZT-Mn, chlorki, sumę węglowodorów ropopochodnych, indeks oleju mineralnego i ołów. W wyniku przeprowadzonych badań w próbkach wody stwierdzono zawartość substancji ropopochodnych wyrażonych poprzez indeks oleju mineralnego i sumę węglowodorów, ołowiu i chlorków, duże stężenie substancji organicznych łatwo rozkładalnych i zmienną zawartość zawiesiny. Przedstawiony materiał sygnalizuje wagę problemu i dowodzi konieczności dalszych, szczegółowych badań w tym zakresie.

Opis:
Uzyskane wyniki posłużyły do opracowania wariantów badań pilotowych w skali technicznej o wydajności 10÷45 m3/h.
Technological field tests were performed from November 2011 until May 2012 in order to determine treatment technology for river water with low alkalinity, high temperature variability and high organic content resulting from plankton blooms. Flow tests with capacity of 0.1 to 1.5 m3/h were performed simultaneously in 3 types of technical installations differing by coagulation modules. It has been demonstrated that coagulation performed in the system with flash mixing, flocculation and sedimentation chamber and final rapid filtration of suspended solids was the decisive water treatment process. Coagulation with aluminum sulfate at doses of 3 to 6 gAl/m3 which lowered water pH to 6.5÷7.0, ensured TOC removal by 44÷64%. This corresponded to its water content following filtration of up to 4 gC/m3. It was stated that if further efficacy improvement of TOC removal from water was necessary, powdered active carbon dosing at 20 g/m3 prior to rapid filter application would be required. The study results formed the basis for development of pilot study variants at technical scale with capacity of 10÷45 m3/h.

Opis:
Public crude oil fields in Wonocolo sub-district were active from 1942 until now and have inadequately operated. The aims of this research were to measure the level of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) pollution and their distribution in soil and surface water at the Wonocolo public crude oil fields. Twelve composite soil samples were collected from uncontaminated and contaminated sites of old well (OW), transportation line (T), and refinery area (R) at the depths of 0–30 cm, 30–60 cm, and 60–90 cm. The composite surface water sample was obtained from two points with different distances from the river side. TPH from soil and surface water samples were extracted using soxhlet and gravimetric method. Quantification of TPH was performed using Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) Spectrometer. From the results of this study, it was concluded that soils and surface water are contaminated by TPH of 119.80–107,190 µg/g and 211,025.73 µg/L, respectively. TPH is clearly located in the upper of 0–30 cm depth at OW, T, and R sites (52,328.14–107,189.63 µg/g). These concentrations exceeded the soil quality standard of TPH and classified as category A for human hazard risk. The findings from this study show that there are considerable health risks which are potentially poisonous to humans in the local area. We recommend that remediation could be conducted using biological methods to reduce TPH pollution level.
