Opis:
We have analytically examined surface-gravity waves which propagate in space- and time-dependent random velocity fields. Using a perturbative method, we have derived a dispersion relation which is solved for the case of wave-noise whose spectrum E(k,omega) ~ E(k)delta(omega-crk), where delta is Dirac's delta-function and cr is the random phase speed. We have found that for a dispersionless noise resonance occurs when cr is equal to the group velocity cg of the surface-gravity wave. In this resonance the real part of the wave frequency is finite, but its imaginary part exhibits the characteristic 1/x singularity. The wave-noise interacts with a packet of the surface-gravity waves in such a way that the waves are attenuated for cr < cg and are amplified for cr > cg. As the real part is positive for high values of k, the surface-gravity waves are accelerated by the wave-noise.

Opis:
Breaking waves (whitecaps) are one of the most important and least understood processes associated with the evolution of the surface gravity wave field in the open sea. This process is the principal means by which energy and momentum are transferred away from a developing sea. However, an estimation of the frequency of breaking waves or the fraction of sea surface covered by whitecaps and the amount of dissipated energy induced by breaking is very difficult to carry out under real sea conditions. A controlled experiment, funded by the European Commission under the Improving Human Potential Access Infrastructures programme, was carried out in the Ocean Basin Laboratory at MARINTEK, Trondheim (Norway). Simulation of random waves of the prescribed spectra by wave makers provided a very realistic pattern of the sea surface. The number of breaking waves was estimated by photographing the sea surface and recording the noise caused by the breaking waves. The experimental data will serve for calibration of the theoretical models of the sea surface fraction related to the whitecaps.

Opis:
The present work discusses the conceptual and technical issues encountered in formulating a quantized theory of gravity, via the reconciliation of quantum mechanics and general relativity. Quantum effects arising in a classically defined space-time derived through a semi classical approximation are studied at length and the significance of the particle interpretation in quantum field theory in the origin of such effects is established. The contradicting nature of the quantum effects against classically established principles is studied by considering the Hawking effect in a Schwarzschild black hole space-time. Further, the limits of prominent manifestation of the quantum effects with regards to the black hole mass is calculated taking into consideration the cosmic microwave background and the lifetime of the universe. Quantum effects are established as essential in incorporating thermal physics and black hole mechanics in a consistent formulation. Finally, the validity of the semi classical approximation is studied in terms of Planck scale black holes, transplanckian problem and the information loss paradox and the requirement for a fully quantized theory of gravity is realized.

Opis:
Fourth order nonlinear evolution equations, which are a good starting point for the study of nonlinear water waves, are derived for deep water surface capillary gravity waves in the presence of second waves in which air is blowing over water. Here it is assumed that the space variation of the amplitude takes place only in a direction along which the group velocity projection of the two waves overlap. A stability analysis is made for a uniform wave train in the presence of a second wave train. Graphs are plotted for the maximum growth rate of instability wave number at marginal stability and wave number separation of fastest growing sideband component against wave steepness. Significant improvements are noticed from the results obtained from the two coupled third order nonlinear Schrödinger equations.

The samples of gravity-operated water were taken quarterly in 2009 from collectors put in fifteen points in areas located nearby coking plant in Dąbrowa Górnicza (Upper Silesia region, Poland). The results allowed determining the seasonal variability of PAHs concentration in gravity-operated water. Significant differences in concentration of PAHs in the summer and wintertime were observed. Moreover, to check the presence of PAHs contamination in the surface flowing water from selected streams, watercourses and draining system were collected.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań zawartości pięciu WWA w próbkach wód opadowych i powierzchniowych. Próbki wód opadowych pobierano kwartalnie w 2009 roku z 15 kolektorów umieszczonych na terenach zlokalizowanych w pobliżu zakładów koksowniczych w Dąbrowie Górniczej (woj. śląskie). Uzyskane wyniki pozwoliły określić zmienność sezonową stężeń WWA w wodach opadowych. Wyraźnie podwyższone stężenia WWA zaobserwowano w sezonie zimowym. Ponadto, w celu sprawdzenia obecności zanieczyszczeń WWA w wodach powierzchniowych, przebadano próbki wód (płynących) powierzchniowych pobranych z wybranych potoków, cieków wodnych oraz rowów melioracyjnych.

Gravity can play a tremendous effect on deformation of rubberlike materials and biological soft tissues. In this paper, considering the gravity effect, we proposed a surface Green’s function of a soft elastomer based on the neo-Hookean model. The proposed surface Green’s function is applied to analyze the elastic deformation of a soft elastomer subjected to uniform pressure. The surface normal displacement of the soft elastomer is calculated and the results show that gravity has a large impact on the surface deformation of the elastomer. Generally, the surface normal displacement decreases with the increasing gravitational force.

The aim of the present paper is to investigate surface waves in an anisotropic, elastic solid medium under the influence of gravity. First, a theory of generalised surface waves was developed and then it was employed to investigate particular cases of waves, viz., Stoneley and Rayleigh, Love type. The wave velocity equations were obtained for different cases and they are in well agreement with the corresponding classical result, when the effect of gravity, viscosity as well as parameters for fibre-reinforcement of the material medium are ignored.

It has become an active research area for treating low specific gravity (SG) deposits by centrifugal separation due to its high efficiency, low cost and minor environmental impact. Laboratory Knelson Concentrator has shown its potential for processing high density ores on a dry basis. This study investigated the feasibility and the optimum operating conditions when processing a dry low SG feed with a modified Knelson Concentrator. A synthetic mixture of magnetite and quartz with a grade of 1% magnetite was used to mimic a low-density ratio ore. Bowl speed (G), air fluidizing pressure (psi) and solids feed rate (g/min) were chosen as the operating variables. Box-Behnken design was used to design the experiments and response surface method was used for optimization. The effects of each individual factors and their interactions on concentrate grade and magnetite recovery were evaluated. The dry process achieved up to 60 % magnetite recovery with an upgrade ratio of 5. The optimized values for the concentration with the highest recovery and grade of bowl speed, solids feed rate and air fluidizing pressure are 27 G, 200 g/min and 12 psi, respectively.

Opis:
In this paper the problem of transient gravitational wave propagation in a viscous incompressible fluid is considered, with a focus on flows with fast-moving free surfaces. The governing equations of the problem are solved by the smoothed particle hydrodynamics method (SPH). In order to impose the incompressibility constraint on the fluid motion, the so-called projection method is applied in which the discrete SPH equations are integrated in time by using a fractional-step technique. Numerical performance of the proposed model has been assessed by comparing its results with experimental data and with results obtained by a standard (weakly compressible) version of the SPH approach. For this purpose, a plane dam-break flow problem is simulated, in order to investigate the formation and propagation of a wave generated by a sudden collapse of a water column initially contained in a rectangular tank, as well as the impact of such a wave on a rigid vertical wall. The results of simulations show the evolution of the free surface of water, the variation of velocity and pressure fields in the fluid, and the time history of pressures exerted by an impacting wave on a wall.

The theory of generalized two-temperature thermoelasticity is used to solve the boundary value problems between two elastic media with two different types of temprature under the influence of gravity. The classical dynamical coupled theory and Lord-Şhulman theory are used to obtain the general solution of the governing equations and investigate the effect of surface waves in an isotropic elastic medium subjected to gravity field. The harmonic vibrations method is used to obtain the displacement components, stress tensor and temperature distribution in the considerd physical domain with comparison with the two theories. The obtained analytic solution of the problem is applied for special cases for which the effect of two temperatures is studied. The conductive and dynamical temperatures as well as stress and strain components are shown graphically for a suitable material. Some comparisons are also introduced in the absence and in the presence of gravity, and two-temperature parameter. The differences in the obtained results between the two theories are considered.

In this paper we basically intend to deductively study aspects and physical behavior of time in the Quantum Mechanical and Loop Quantum Gravity regime and the physical interpretations therein. The implicit gauge invariance of the vortical time is deduced. A new form of the Hamiltonian constraint is produced and the corresponding Vector or Diffeomorphism constraint is also introduced, the Gauss constraint being found to be the same as that in the original. The new consequences are discussed. The paper presents fresh new ideas and interpretations as well as perspectives on the spatial as well as the now introduced temporal aspects of Loop Quantum Gravity. In this we basically intend to deductively study aspects and physical behavior of Time in the Quantum Mechanical and Loop quantum gravity regime and the physical interpretations therein. In what follows, we provide a systematic mathematico-physical treatment of the vortical aspect of quantum gravity or a test quantum system, relative to space, as the time for that system. The implicit gauge invariance of the vortical time is deduced. A general theory of implicit and explicit gauge invariance is proposed. The gauging out of the acausality gauge degree of freedom is deduced and the causal direction of time is shown to nucleate out as a self ordered criticality due to a “tweaking” field which is shown to be a form of magnetic phase transition. This magnetic phase arising in the Kodama holomorphic wave functional universe, arises naturally due to the Ashtekar “magnetic” field in general. Also the wave-particle duality of gravity/ geometry as a quantum system is interpreted in terms of the physical role played by time. The long standing problem of the interpretation of the quantum mechanical time-inverse temperature has apriori been resolved with a heuristic interpretation. As an epilogue, the Pauli theorem on time as an operator has been discussed along with the standard proof.

When conducting geodetic and gravimetric measurements, there is a problem of projecting them to the reference surface. Since the gravitational field is inhomogeneous under the real conditions, the problem arises of determining the corrections to the measured values of gravitational acceleration in order to use the obtained data for the subsequent solutions of projection problems. Currently, the solution to this problem is performed using a Bouguer reduction, which requires information about the internal structure of the upper layer of the earth’s surface, topography, etc. The purpose of this study is to develop a methodological approach that would allow to determine the reduction (projection) corrections for gravitational acceleration on technogenic and geodynamic polygons without using data about the distribution of surface layer density and topography. The research process is based on the use of mathematical analysis methods and a wide range of experimental geodetic and gravimetric measurements. In the course of the performed researches, an algorithm was obtained and a practical implementation of the determination of the corrections in the measured values of gravitational acceleration on the basis of geodetic and gravimetric measurements was carried out at the certain geodynamic polygon in order to bring all corrections to one level surface.

The Gondwana Late Palaeozoic Ice Age is probably best represented by the Dwyka Group in South Africa. Striated and grooved surfaces or pavements are commonly considered to have formed subglacially, as are diamictites which have been interpreted as in-situ or reworked tillites. These interpretations were tested by investigation of outcrops in formerly well-studied areas, throughout South Africa. Detailed analyses have focused on striated surfaces/pavements and surface microtextures on quartz sand grains in diamictites. The sedimentological context of four pavements, interpreter to be glaciogenic, display features commonly associated with sediment gravity flows, rather than glaciation. A total of 4,271 quartz sand grains were subsampled from outcrops that are considered mainly to be tillites formed by Continental glaciation. These grains, analysed by SEM, do not demonstrate the characteristic surface microtexture combinations of fracturing and irregular abrasion associated with Quaternary glacial deposits, but mainly a mix of surface microtextures associated with multicyclical grains. The Dwyka Group diamictites warrant reinterpretation as non-glacial sediment gravity flow deposits.
