Opis:
This book deals with the inverse problem of identification of dynamic loads and its applications for low frequency structural health monitoring (SHM). It collects and unifies the work performed by the author within the framework of three research projects either alone or together with the three Ph.D. students under his supervision or co-supervision. In particular: - The inverse linear problem of load identification is discussed in the practically important case of limited instrumentation. Various techniques for augmenting the missing information are described together with three complementary quantitative measures of optimum sensor placement. - A method for identification of dynamic loads in elastoplastic structures is developed, including sensitivity analysis of the response and gradient-based optimization. - The general methodology of the virtual distortion method (VDM) is used to represent various SHM problems in terms of a load identification problem. This includes - A methodology for virtual isolation of substructures for the purpose of local SHM. - A model-free (nonparametric and based on purely experimental data) methodology for identification of structural damages, modifications and inelastic impacts. - A unified approach to the problem of simultaneous identification of unknown excitations and structural damages. All presented approaches are tested and illustrated in numerical examples that use a realistic numerical noise level of at least 5% rms. Depending on laboratory constraints, experimental verification is performed in selected cases.

Opis:
An optimal sensor placement methodology is implemented and herein proposed for SHM model-assisted design and analysis purposes. The kernel of this approach analysis is a genetic-based algorithm providing the sensor network layout by optimizing the probability of detection (PoD) function while, in this preliminary phase, a classic strain energy approach is adopted as well established damage detection criteria. The layout of the sensor network is assessed with respect to its own capability of detection, parameterized through the PoD. A distributed fiber optic strain sensor is adopted in order to get dense information of the structural strain field. The overall methodology includes an original user-friendly graphical interface (GUI) that reduces the time-to-design costs needs. The proposed methodology is preliminarily validated for isotropic and anisotropic elements.

Opis:
Ships and offshore structures operate in a severe corrosion degradation environment and face difficulty in providing longlasting corrosion protection. The Classification Societies recommend regular thickness measurements leading to structural component replacements, to ensure structural integrity during service life. The measurements are usually performed using ultrasonic thickness gauges and such an approach requires multiple measurements of the corroded structural components. Otherwise, the collected data are insufficient to precisely assess the corrosion degradation level. This study aims to perform numerical and experimental analyses to verify the use of guided ultrasonic waves in defining the corrosion degradation level of the corroded structural components of a ship. The study incorporates the fundamental antisymmetric Lamb mode, excited by piezoelectric transducers attached at the pre-selected points on stiffened panels, representing typical structural ship components. The specimens are exposed to accelerated marine corrosion degradation, the influence of the degree of degradation on the wave time of flight being analysed. The study indicates that guided waves are a promising approach for diagnosing corroded structural components. The signals characterised by a high signal-to-noise ratio have been captured, even for relatively long distances between the transducers. This proves that the proposed approach can be suitable for monitoring more extensive areas of ship structures by employing a single measurement.

The common damage in engineering structures, especially in functionally graded materials, such as failure resulting from fiber breaking or cracking in the matrix or deboning between fibers and matrix, as well as the delamination between the composite material plies and between its layers, may be due to thermal effects, vibration, load concentration as a result of stress and strain for provides information’s about structural health monitoring. Virtual energy method such as Hamilton's was used to investigate the effect of the design parameters such as side to thickness and modular as well as material graduation index ratio on the stress-strain relationships, displacement, resultants of stresses, and resultants of mid plane strain. The analysis and simulation of the FGM shells is done in this paper utilizing MATLAB19 code and ABAQUS20 programs. The distribution of characteristics across shell thickness had also been determined using a power law. Normal stress was varied gradually from 5.74 MPa to 9.55 MPa with material index (n) from 0 to 10 respectively, while shear stress varied from 4.2 to 8.23 MPa for the same value of (n). The strain percent increased slightly from 0.00059 to 0.0012 with displacement 0.22 and 1.2 respectively for the same value of (n).

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of temperature change on the Lamb wave-based SHM method. This study evaluates the Lamb wave method’s ability to detect damage to an AL2024-T3 sheet, assessed by a near-surface hole. Lamb waves are created via numerical simulation with the commercial Finite Element (FE) package ABAQUS. In this study, the Lamb wave-based SHM method using displacement responses is used. The results indicate that this method is able to detect a near-surface hole in the AL2024-T3 sheet as well as its location, with close approximation. Subsequently, the AL1100 sheet was investigated for changes in temperature from this method, which was evaluated over a temperature range of –200°C to 204°C. The results show that temperature change in the range of –200°C to 93°C has no effect on the displacement responses. However, the graphs related to temperature change of more than 149°C do not overlap with the reference temperature. Hence, it has been concluded that Lamb waves can be used as an SHM method in the temperature range of –200°C to 93°C without having to worry about the effects of temperature change on the results.

Opis:
Laboratory for Materials Strength Testing (LMST) has been conducting accredited mechanical research for aviation from 2003. Among accredited procedures are e.g. low and high cycle fatigue tests, fracture toughness tests and fatigue crack growth rate tests. The main goal of them is obtaining materials constants and characteristics. However knowledge how to conduct these tests could be used also in other applications, for instance in the work on development of Structural Health Monitoring systems (SHM). When cracks propagate in a controlled way in laboratory conditions, it allows verifying the operation of a single sensor or a network of sensors. In this paper, an overview of mechanical tests carried out at the Laboratory for Materials Strength Testing within Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) work on research and development of SHM systems is presented. Specimens prepared from materials such as aluminum alloys (among other withdrawn PZL-130 Orlik TC-II aircraft) and CFRP composite were tested under different mechanical loads, i.e., cycle and impact loads. In the presented research, both constant amplitude and spectrum loads were applied.

This article is based on research done during the author’s PhD at Cardiff University, UK. A prototype of a novel wireless energy transmission system aimed at the use with wireless aircraft structural health monitoring (SHM) sensor nodes is described. The system uses ultrasonic guided plate waves (Lamb waves) to transmit energy along an aluminium plate, similar to those used in aircraft structures. Three types of piezoelectric transducers generating and receiving the ultrasonic vibration were compared. The Smart Material MFC M8528-P1 was found to achieve the best performance, allowing the transmission of 17 mW across a 54 cm distance, while being driven with a 20 V signal. Laser vibrometer imaging and LISA software simulation of the Lamb wave propagation in the experimental plate were also performed. Based on these, ideas for a further development of the system were proposed.

Opis:
In recent years an intensive research activity into the application of guided waves (GWs) for structural health monitoring (SHM) can be observed. For instance, Lamb waves (LWs) have shown a great potential in monitoring of thin, planar structures. However, due to the dispersive and multimodal nature of the LWs, their snapshots can consist of many pulses even for an intact structure, which makes damage detection very complex. Moreover, small PZT transducers, most commonly used in SHM systems, act normally as omni-directional wave sources; therefore, dense or sparse transducers networks are required for damage localization. Some of the above-mentioned drawbacks of single PZT emitters and sensors can be overcome using interdigital transducers (IDT) designed to excite and sense a single, selected mode. The mode-tuning is performed by changing the span of finger electrodes to match the wavelength of the excited mode for the selected frequency. An IDT is a directional source, therefore, it generates a wave steered to the direction perpendicular to the electrodes. The width of the excited main lobe can be determined by the length of the electrodes. Since many parameters of the IDTs infl uence the LWs propagation, techniques for the simulation of the wave excitation and propagation are needed. In the paper, numerical tools for the computer aided design and virtual prototyping of the IDTs are presented. The simulation technique is based on the frequency-dependent transfer function of the structure, and due to its computational efficiency it can be used for fast testing of IDTs’ performance and for preliminary transducer design for further finite element simulations, and prototyping.

One approach to developing a system of continues automated monitoring of structural health is to use elastic waves excited in a given medium by a piezoelectric transducers network. Depending on their source and the geometry of the structure under consideration elastic waves can propagate over a significant distance. They are also sensitive to local structure discontinuities and deformations providing a tool for detecting local damage in large aerospace structures. This paper investigates the issue of Barely Visible Impact Damages (BVIDs) detection in composite materials. The model description and the results of impact tests verifying damage detection capabilities of the proposed signal characteristics are presented in the paper.
