Opis:
Nowadays, technical possibilities to build and implement new solution in industry or scientists research are very wide. PC computer with dedicated environmental software makes building equipment previously reserved to FPGA systems possible. In this article we focus on building a sound level meter application. The main reason to undertake this problem was to check precision of sound level meter consisting of a dedicated computer program and the main board integrated sound card. All algorithms were implemented in LabVIEW 8.6, thus we call our system SLM_LV_v1.2c. In testing SLM_LV_v1.2c we have performed the calibration procedure in the Vibroacoustics Laboratory of the Department of Mechanics and Vibroacoustics (a Calibration Laboratory accredited by Polish Centre for Accreditation). The presented results show that our meter in a specific range meets requirements for 1st class sound level meters. Certainly, we can not use it as regular sound level meter without any other research like e.g. type approval, but at the same time we can consider it to be an inexpensive sound level indicator. At the end of the paper, we present results of comparison between measurements obtained with SLM_LV_v1.2c and the popular sound level meter SVAN 945A and show some sources of errors.

Opis:
As a consequence of recent implementations of EU Directives related to noise protection more and more students of various AGH-UST programs are introduced to the basics of acoustic measurements. Students at various levels of theoretical background in the field of acoustic measurements are offered practical training in measurements using digital sound analyzers. The situation would be optimal if each student could have a device at his/her own disposal. Unfortunately, such a situation is not possible at the moment because of various reasons. With the above problem in mind, a dedicated software package has been developed, implemented in the LabVIEW environment, which allows detailed studies of problems related to the acoustic signal measurement using sound level meters, as well as tasks in spectral analysis (1/1 and 1/3 band filters) and narrow-band (FFT) analysis. With such organization during the introductory laboratory classes each student is offered a direct individual contact with a virtual device that is properly pre-programmed for realization of a well-constructed learning process. It definitely facilitates understanding of the essence of acoustic signal measurements and provides a good basis for further laboratory work carried out as a team-activity.

Opis:
The condition monitoring techniques like acoustic emission, vibration analysis, and infrared thermography, used for the failure diagnosis of bearings, require longer processing time, as they have to per form acoustical measurement followed by signal processing and further analysis using special software. However, for any bearing, its period of usage can be easily determined within an hour, by measuring the bearing sound, using sound level meter (SLM). In this paper the acoustical analysis of the spindle Bering of a radial drilling machine was performed using SLM, by measuring the sound pressure level of the bearing in decibels, for different frequencies, while muting all the other noises. Then using an experimental set up, two database readings were taken, one for new bearing and the other for completely damaged bearing, both are SKF6207, which itself is the spindle bearing. From these three sets of sound pressure level readings, the period of usage of the spindle bearing, was calculated using an interpolation equation, by substituting the life of the bearing from the manufacturer’s catalogue. Therefore, for any machine with a SKF6207 bearing, its usage time can be estimated using the database readings and one measurement on that machine, all with the same speed.

Opis:
The article presents basic concepts related to accredited calibration laboratories in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025. It describes in detail one of the only few existing in Poland calibration laboratories which deals with instruments for sound measurements. This laboratory is an interesting case as it is the only one in Poland, located in a company developing new instruments, producing, selling them and conducting their service in all over the world. Thanks to this location, the laboratory is able to provide their services not only in Poland but also abroad, which could affect revenues. In the paper laboratory equipment is presented and the innovative ways to increase measurement throughput is discussed. The calibration and measurement capability developed on the basis of uncertainty budgets is given. The activities carried out during the calibration are presented as well as the contents of the first page of the certificate. In the conclusions the strengths of the laboratory are listed.

Opis:
Human activity is main source of all environmental pollutions. Noise is common environmental issuesthat cannot be generated without geospatial location. It has great impact on mankind such as physical disturbance, physiological disturbance and affects human health. The aim of this research work is to identify the geospatial noise level and mapping noise vulnerability in some part of Ibadan North East Local Government Area. DSLM and GPS are used for survey method in which sixteen different location points were selected for noise vulnerability. The Mathematical Model is used to calculate Equivalent continuous sound level for morning, afternoon and evening (Lm_a_e), mean noise level for the morning, afternoon, evening and Daily Average of Noise values were generated. World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation standard was used as a standard in this research because Nigeria Noise pollution bill is still under consideration in the National Assembly. ArcGIS software was used for analysis and noise zones were carved out based on WHO yardsticks. Noise vulnerability mapping generated shown that land uses within the study area were experiencing very higher noise levels which are risky to the environment and society. Environmental agency and Government should set standard values for the noise barriers by passing the noise bill in the National Assembly assiduously and soonest.

Opis:
An industrial process such as wheat processing generates significant noise which can cause adverse effects on workers and the general public. This study assessed the noise level at a wheat processing mill in Ilorin, Nigeria. A portable digital sound level meter HD600 manufactured by Extech Inc., USA was used to determine the noise level around various machines, sections and offices in the factory at pre-determined distances. Subjective assessment was also mode using a World Health Organization (WHO) standard questionnaire to obtain information regarding noise ratings, effect of noise on personnel and noise preventive measures. The result of the study shows that the highest noise of 99.4 dBA was recorded at a pressure blower when compared to other machines. WHO Class-4 hearing protector is recommended for workers on the shop floor and room acoustics should be upgraded to absorb some sounds transmitted to offices.
