Opis:
This work presents the synthesis of fluorine- and chlorine-doped silica thin films on stainless steel (316L) prepared by the sol–gel method. Obtained materials were examined: structurally (SEM, roughness measurements), mechanically (four-point bending test) and biologically (in vitro). The results of the tests show that it is a possibility to synthesis by sol-gel method stable, continuous and biocompatible coating for materials used for implants.

Opis:
SiO₂-Al₂O₃ sol gel coating solution was used for coating of mild steel substrate by dip coating technique with withdrawing speeds of 250, 500, 750 and 1000 mm/min. The coatings were subsequently heat treated at 200°C for 1 hour in order to improve their corrosion resistance properties. The coating sol was synthesised using Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (C₉H₂₀O₅Si) and Aluminium triisopropylate (C₉H₂₁O₃Al). The corrosion resistance of the both coated and uncoated samples was evaluated by the Tafel polarization in NaCl solution. Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analyses were used to identify the presence of various functional groups in the coating solution. A comparison of the corrosion resistance of the coated and uncoated mild steel is presented. Variation of corrosion potential $(E_\text{corr})$ has increased and corrosion current density (i_{corr}) has decreased in the coated samples. i_{corr} values of coated specimens, heat treated at 200°C, were 12 to 14 times smaller than those of uncoated specimen. The measured electrochemical parameters indicate that the corrosion resistance was improved by the coating.

Despite of applying modern biomaterials during constructing long term orthopaedic implants, in clinical practice there are still present wide range of complications, particularly concerning matter of implant - tissue interactions. Since interaction between implant and living tissue depends mainly on biomaterial surface features, we decided to modify orthopaedic alloys to improve their biological properties. The object of this experiment was in vitro evaluation of selected biological properties, particularly cytotoxicity of titanium alloy and 316L stainless steel substrates coated with SiO2 or TiO2 thin films. The coatings were synthesized by sol-gel method. Each samples was placed into mouse fibroblast culture. The cultures in presence of tested materials were maintained for three days. We found no distinct toxic effect of tested biomaterials. We noticed increase of fibroblast proliferation in cultures with uncoated titanium and particularly SiO2 coated titanium plates.

Opis:
The basic factor limiting the use of glasses is their unsatisfactory mechanical strength. The improvement of the mechanical strength of glasses is usually obtained by applying their respective thin surface layers. The object of the research was glass coated with zirconium oxide. For the application of zirconium oxide layer, dip-coating method was used. The resulting materials were subjected to detailed examination of the microstructure (SEM), and mechanical tests (Vickers hardness and modulus of elasticity). In order to evaluate the optical characteristics, the tests were performed by UV/VIS. The thickness of the overlying layers were determined using the method of ellipsometry. The study showed that the obtained sol-gel layer of zirconium oxide (IV) on glasses influence the improvement of the mechanical properties. It has been shown that the applied layers have high adhesion to the substrate.

Opis:
In this study, using spin-coating sol-gel method we fabricated TiO₂ thin films, doped with different concentrations (1, 2, and 3 mole %) of Ce, Dy, and Eu. Characterization of the prepared samples was performed by means of the X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, ultraviolet visible absorption, and differential thermal and thermo gravimetric analysis. X-ray diffraction measurements have shown that in Eu and Dy-doped samples crystal structure consists of mixed rutile and the dominant anatase phases, however the Ce doped samples consist of anatase phase only. Scanning electron microscopy images have revealed that while average thin film thickness of the Dy-doped samples decreases with increasing concentration of Dy, the average film thicknesses of samples doped with Ce and Eu increases with increasing concentrations of these dopants. Ultraviolet visible absorption spectroscopy measurements have shown that while absorbances of the samples doped by 1 and 2 mole % of the dopants have nearly similar properties, these properties differ from each other for 3 mole % of the dopants. Finally, differential thermal and thermo gravimetric analyses have shown that the chemical reactions and weight losses of the samples have occurred at the expected temperatures.

Aby jeszcze lepiej odwzorować środowisko tkankowe, do roztworu soli fizjologicznej dodano albuminę - białko występujące w osoczu krwi w największej ilości. Właściwości antykorozyjne powłoki TiO2 określono w oparciu o wyznaczone wartości potencjału korozyjnego Ecor, oporu polaryzacyjnego Rp, szybkości korozji CR, gęstości prądu w obszarze pasywnym i0.5 oraz potencjałów przebicia Eb i repasywacji Erep.
In this study we investigated the influence of solution pH and serum protein on the anticorrosion properties of titanium dioxide TiO2 coating. This TiO2 coating with amorphous structure containing crystallites of anatase was obtained by the solgel method on the surface of M30NW biomedical alloy. Corrosion measurements using electrochemical methods were carried out in 0.9 % NaCl (physiological saline) solution at pH of 4.5 and 7.4. The pH values selected for the tests simulate both natural body conditions (pH=7.4) and inflammatory conditions which may occur in the body (pH=4.5). Much better simulation of tissue environment was achieved by adding of albumin – protein found in blood plasma in the greatest amount. Anticorrosion properties of TiO2 coating were determined on the basis of corrosion potential Ecor, polarization resistance Rp, corrosion rate CR, current density in the passive range i0.5 and also breakdown Eb and repasssivation potentials Erep. It was stated that modification of M30NW alloy surface by TiO2 coating cause increase in corrosion resistance of the investigated alloy in NaCl solutions both at pH of 4.5 and 7.4 - anticorrosive effect of TiO2 coating is evident both at corrosion potential and during the anodic polarization. The addition of albumin has an ambiguous effect on the anticorrosion properties of the TiO2 coating at the corrosion potential. Whereas during the anodic polarization the protein effect is visible only in NaCl solution at pH of 4.5 – albumin causes significant increase in the breakdown potential of the alloy coated by TiO2.

Crystal structure and phase composition of stainless steel substrates (AISI 304 type) was studied and it was found that they adopted the cubic symmetry. The calculated elementary cell parameter for the mayor Fe-Ni phase (weight fraction 99%) was a = 3.593 Å, whereas the mean grain size was = 2932 Å. Morphology of the stainless steel substrate surface was studied with profilometry. Mechanical properties of the stainless steel substrates and stainless steel substrates coated with ceramic layer of barium strontium titanate were studied with microhardness tester. For measurements performed according to the Vickers method the average microhardness was found HV = 189 or HV = 186 for the “in-line” and “mapping” measurement pattern, respectively. The sol-gel method was used to coat the surface of the stainless steel substrate with a thin ceramic layer of the chemical composition Ba0.6 Sr0.4 TiO3 . It was found that the stainless steel substrate covered with sol-gel deposited ceramic coating exhibited the average hardness within the range HV = 217 up to HV = 235 for loading force F = 98 mN and F = 0.98 N, respectively. The Knopp method was also used and it was found that the stainless steel substrate with Ba0.6 Sr0.4 TiO3 coating exhibited hardness HK = 386.

Opis:
Highly-oriented ZnO thin films prepared by using low-cost technique such as sol-gel technique are of much importance to ZnO-based white light-emitting diodes. The chose of proper preheating temperature in sol-gel technique is still critical for highly-oriented ZnO thin film so far. The mechanisms for the preheating in the formation of ZnO thin film and for the reactions involved in the sol solution have not been clearly stated yet. Thus, in this work, the highly-oriented ZnO thin films were prepared on glass substrates by using sol-gel spin-coating technique. The sol solution was prepared by using the two-step method rather than usual one-step method, which facilitates the understanding of the mechanism for the reactions involved in the sol solution. The effect of the preheating temperature on the microstructure and the optical properties of the films were in particular investigated. The mechanisms for the preheating in the formation of the films and for the reactions involved in the sol solution prepared by the two-step method were also proposed in terms of the experimental results. The preheating not only enhances the volatilization of the solvent 2-methoxyethanol and the decomposition of the residual organic species, but also results into the formation of small number of ZnO particles. The preheating temperature of 300°C is most favorable for the highly-oriented ZnO thin film. Increasing the preheating temperature results into the blue shift of the absorption edges of the films. This can be explained by using the quantum-size effect. The photoluminescence spectra of the films show an UV emission at the near-band edge and a broad green-yellow emission at 470-620 nm. The former is closely related to the excitons, while the latter is to the intrinsic defect species in the film.

This study aimed at synthesis, preparation, and physicochemical properties investigation of undoped polysiloxane-based coatings deposited on the glass supports. The other goal was to test the effectiveness of their hydrophobization with hexamethyldisilazane at an elevated temperature using a bubbler. The coatings were obtained in a sol-gel process by acid-assisted hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane and they were applied to the glass supports using the dip coating technique with various withdrawal speeds. The synthesized composition was scanned using TurbiscanLAB and its particle size was determined by means of the dynamic light scattering technique. The obtained surfaces were examined based on the water wettability measurements, photoacoustic spectroscopy, and transmittance measurements. It was found that the stability of the sol did not change during the dip-coating. Smooth, homogeneous, uniform, hydrophobic, and transparent coatings on the glass supports were obtained. Their wettability was determined by the contact angle in the range from 83.5 to 95.2 degrees and very low contact angle hysteresis. The hydrophobic effect obtained by modification with hexamethyldisilazane appears to be permanent – the contact angles do not change significantly after 7 days. The synthesized sol composition appears to be a good starting point for its chemical and physical modification for hydrophobicity increase and surface properties modification. Moreover, the hydrophobization of the coatings with hexamethyldisilazane at an elevated temperature using the bubbler did not have the desired effect.

Fluorine and tungsten co-doped tin (IV) oxide (WFTO) thin films have been prepared first time by a sol–gel spin coating method. The effect of F and W co-dopant ratio on optical, electrical and structural properties of SnO2 was investigated. It was found that the optical properties of the films were obviously affected by the co-dopant ratio. When the F:W co-dopant ratio increases from 0.25:0.25 to 0.75:0.50, the transmittance in the short wavelengths slightly increases and transmittance edge shifts towards shorter wavelength. With an increase in the co-dopant ratio, the reduction and red shifts in the optical transmittance edge are very obvious at all wavelengths. Transmittance values at 550 nm for the films have varied between 79.64% and 50.20%. The indirect and direct band gap values for WFTO-1, WFTO-2, WFTO-3 and WFTO-4 samples were calculated to be 3.73, 3.79, 3.48, 3.40 eV and 4.03, 4.04, 3.98, 3.97 eV, respectively. The crystal structure of the films has been investigated by X-ray diffraction patterns. It has been observed that WFTO-1 and WFTO-2 samples have (111) preferential orientation corresponding to SnO2 cubic phase. This orientation almost disappears and changes to tetragonal phase (110) orientation for WFTO-3 and WFTO-4. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first cubic structure observation for SnO2 grown by the sol–gel technique. The electrical properties were also changed with co-doping ratio. The best optical, electrical and structural properties were obtained for mole ratio 0.75:0.50 (F:W).

Opis:
In this study, ceramic TiO2 thin films were prepared on glass substrates using sol-gel and spin-coating methods from the TNBT/ AcOH/ EtOH/ H2O solution. The obtained coatings were subjected to drying at room temperature and were then calcined in the air at different temperatures in a range of 400–600°C in order to obtain clean TiO2   layers. The surface morphology and chemical composition were characterized with the use of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDX). Research has shown the presence of elements in the TiO2   and the influence of temperatures on layer thickness. Analysis of optical properties and energy gap width of the prepared coatings was determined by means of spectra analysis of absorbance as a function of radiation energy obtained with the use of the UV-VIS spectrophotometer. The obtained spectra of the layers are characterized by a shift of absorption lines towards the visible light wavelengths and the obtained values of band gaps decrease as the calcination temperature rises. The obtained and developed results of TiO2   thin films testify to the wide application possibilities of the layers in elements which use photocatalytic processes such as self-cleaning surfaces, solar cells, pollution removing membranes and optoelectronic components.

Opis:
GZO/IZO semiconductor thin films were prepared on the ITO substrate via sol-gel spin coating method for using in the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). For this purpose, GZO and IZO thin films were optimized by the percentage of doping gallium and indium in zinc oxide and were studied their electrical, optical and structural properties. After that, the layers with the best performance were selected for use in the DSSCs. The concentration of all solutions for spin coating processes was 0.1 M and zinc oxide has been doped with gallium and indium, with different doping percentages (0, 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 volume percentage). So, by studying the properties of the fabricated thin films, it was found the films with 0.5%GZO and 0.5%IZO have the best performance and hence, the optimized dual-layer (0.5% GZO/0.5% IZO (GIZO)) were prepared and studied their electrical and optical properties. The synthesized optimized dual-layer film was successfully used as the working electrode for dye-sensitized solar cells. The sample with 0.5%IZO shows the 9.1 mA/cm2 short-circuit current density, 0.52 V open circuit voltage, 63% fill factor and 2.98% efficiency.

Opis:
The paper analyses the influence of heat treatment parameters on SiO2 coatings obtained by the sol–gel technique. Their adhesion to the glass substrate and corrosion resistance were studied. The changes in thickness and porosity with the firing temperature and time of sintering for the systems of 1, 2 and 3 layers in case of SiO2 layers were studied. It was shown that the sufficient durability of the SiO2 coating on the glass substrate can be achieved only by the appropriate selection of thermal treatment parameters. The results confirmed that higher sintering temperature is required for multilayer systems, as compared with a one-layer system.

This paper presents the method of investigating the sol-gel transition by constant speed removal of plates, made of suitable substrate, from an aqueous colloidal binder. The thickness of the deposited colloidal binder layer depends on the particle sizes in the binder. The processing feasibility of colloidal binders reduced by aggregation of particles is difficult to evaluate without access to special measuring equipment. Development of a simple method for prompt evaluation of performance parameters in colloidal binders may have industrial applications.

This paper describes the sol - gel method barium and titanium compounds materials obtaining, which their physicochemical parameters could be competitive with the materials obtained by classic methods. Additionally dielectric thin layers was obtained with the use of spin and dip coaters. Based on selected precursor elements which form appropriate crystal net, the capacitance construction was created. Dielectric in this contraction was a barium titanate with high electrical permittivity and small grain size. The optimal dry, calcinations and sintering temperature of the dielectric with base was determined. On that capacitor the microscopic analysis with the use of scanning electron microscope (SEM) was carried out. The thickness of the dielectric layer and electrical parameters use by impedance analyzer Solatron SI 1260 was carried out. The capacitance, dielectric loss and electrical permittivity was carried out, cooperative influence of the frequency and temperature on the measurements was determined. The best results had a samples sintered in the 1000°C. The electrical permittivity for measurements in few Hertz for the samples with the base of nickel and BaTiO3 layer coated by spin and dip coaters, in the room temperature and measurements for few Hertz, amount to 4700. The electrical capacity for low frequency was about 3,2ź10-8F.
Dodatkowo wykorzystując urządzenia typu spin i dip coater uzyskano cienkie warstwy dielektryczne. Na podstawie wytypowanych prekursorów pierwiastków tworzących odpowiednia sieć krystaliczna, wykonano układ pojemnosciowy, w którym dielektryk stanowił tytanian baru o wysokiej wartości przenikalności elektrycznej i niewielkich rozmiarach ziaren. Wyznaczono optymalna temperature suszenia, kalcynacji i wypalania dielektryku wraz z podłożem.

Opis:
The paper presents the influence of ZrO2 coating on Ti6Al7Nb titanium alloy depending on the method of deposition. The coatings were made by sol-gel method and atomic layer deposition (ALD). Wettability tests, pitting corrosion assessment and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were carried out in the paper. Complementary macro- and microscopic observations, roughness analysis by profilometric method and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were made. Based on the results obtained, it can be concluded that the type of method of depositing the layer on the surface of the material has a significant influence on its properties and that it should be taken into account during the process of the material improvement. Drawing on the findings presented, it can be inferred that roughness has a significant impact upon the surface wetttability of the tested surfaces and their related corrosion resistance. The obtainment of hydrophobic surfaces is for smaller rougidity values.

Opis:
Titania dioxide (TiO₂) layers were synthesized via the acid-catalysed sol-gel route using titania (IV) ethoxide, and then annealed at temperatures varying in the range of 150-700 °C. The research concerned the effect of annealing temperature on the structure of TiO₂ layers, their surface morphology, and their optical properties. Further, X-ray diffractometry, and Raman spectroscopy were used to determine the structure of TiO₂ layers. Scanning electron and atomic force microscopy were used to study the surface morphology of TiO₂ layers. Transmittance, reflectance, absorption edge, and optical homogeneity were investigated by UV-VIS spectrophotometry, while the refractive index and thicknesses of TiO₂ layers were measured using a monochromatic ellipsometer. Chromatic dispersion characteristics of the complex refractive index were determined using spectroscopic ellipsometry. Structural studies have shown that the TiO₂ layers annealed at temperatures up to 300 °C are amorphous, while those annealed at temperatures exceeding 300 °C are polycrystalline containing only anatase nanocrystals with sizes increasing from 6 to 20 nm with the increase of the annealing temperature. Investigations on the surface morphology of TiO₂ layers have shown that the surface roughness increases with the increase in annealing temperature. Spectrophotometric investigations have shown that TiO₂ layers are homogeneous and the width of the indirect optical band gap varies with annealing temperature from 3.53 eV to 3.73 eV.
