Opis:
The article presents the results of monitoring the aftereffect of the use of excessive zonal doses of mineral fertilisers on soil contamination with heavy metals (HM). With traditional soybean cultivation technology, the level of soil contamination when applying excessive doses (N60 P180 K90) of fertilisers is quite high and indicates violations of the ecological balance of the agroecosystem. By the nature of the accumulation of heavy metals in meadow-chestnut soil, depending on the application of the studied doses (P60 K30, N30 P60 K30, N60 P180K90) of fertiliser, the content of HM (Pb, Zn, Cd) increases. The greatest contamination of the soil with Cu was revealed, the content of which increases to 3.2 mg∙kg-1 of soil, which is higher than the threshold of the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) - 3.0 mg∙kg-1. According to the level of contamination of the soil with copper, it belongs to the highly dangerous classes. In a comparative assessment of the level of soil contamination with HM, optimal norms of mineral fertilisers have been established, namely, against the background of effective resource-saving technology for growing soybeans. The application of fertilisers at a dose of P60 K30 and N30 P60 K30 does not significantly affect the level of soil contamination with HM, optimises the ecological state and nutrient regime of the soil, preserves and restores soil fertility indicators, and increases soybean productivity. This resource-saving technology provides a safe environment for soybean cultivation and a significant increase of 34.5-38.6% in crop productivity (0.53-0.76 Mg∙ha-1) and yield (2.57 Mg∙ha-1).

Opis:
Toxic pollutants of industrial origin can be dangerous for professionals who come into contact with them at work, and also for the people who live near the sources of environmental hazards. There is a known relationship between the soil pollution with heavy metals and the morbidity of the population. This paper reports a study of the soil pollution with ions of heavy metals in the Turkestan region, Kazakhstan. The study found technogenic geochemical anomalies of various size, intensity and origin in the soils of the Turkestan region. The distribution of lead, copper, barium, zinc, molybdenum, phosphorus and arsenic was mapped based on the ecological and geochemical survey of the upper soil layer. The most polluted city is Kentau, where concentrations of Pb, Mo, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Mn, Cr, Ni in the soil exceed the allowable level. The cause of pollution is erosion that occurs in the areas of technogenic waste storage. In some communities, the concentration of only one metal exceeded its MAC or the Clarke number, for example, only scandium exceeded its Clarke number by 1.1 in Lenger and only exceeded its Clarke number by 2.75 in Sholakkorgan.

Degradacja obejmuje biotyczne i abiotyczne przemiany chemiczne.
The contemporary influence of petroleum substances on the natural environment, i.e. soil and water, is extremely large. Pollution of petroleum hydrocarbons in the environment causes enormous ecological effects and is usually introduced into the ecosystem anthropogenically. In soil, petroleum hydrocarbons affect the physical properties of the soil. The degradation depends on the nature, composition, physical and chemical properties. Degradation includes biotic and abiotic chemical transformations. The paper discusses the course of remediation works in the area contaminated with petroleum substances. The work uses the hybrid soil remediation technique, which turned out to be effective. The initial use of chemical oxidation reduced the heavy fraction of the pollutants. The successively applied proprietary treatment with the use of biological factors, such as autochthonous soil microflora or surfactants, allowed for a significant reduction of pollutants, not exceeding the permissible standard. The proposed hybrid technique may be an effective tool for the remediation of soils contaminated with oil derivatives.

Opis:
To assess the level of soil contamination with oil and petroleum products, the criterion of the cenotic level as the nature of the phytocenosisformation was used. It was found that the bioindication reaction of vascular plants to oil pollution is the deterioration of quantitative and qualitative indicators of the native phytocenosis with possible self-recovery of the plant community at the threshold concentrations of petroleum products 6.0±0.3–8.0±0.5 l/m2. Light fractions of oil products cause complete destruction of the existing plant community, and the new community is formed at the expense of the soil stock of seeds and drift ruderal plant species. Dark fractions of petroleum products cause structural changes in the species composition of the existing phytocenosis. The most resistant to oil pollution of the soil are the representatives of the Poaceae family, and the representatives of the families Solanacee and Malvaceae are eliminated from the phytocenosis. For 8 years of research, the projective cover of soil with vegetation is reduced to 92.6±6.3–99.6±0.4%.

Do oceny stanu środowiska, w tym również glebowego, najczęściej stosuje się metody badań ilościowych i jakościowych pojawiających się zanieczyszczeń. Badania obejmują analizy chemiczne i biologiczne.
To assess the condition of the environment, including soil, the methods of quantitative and qualitative research on emerging pollutants are most often used. The research includes chemical and biological analyzes. However, such determinations can be complex and take a long time. The methods of bioindication which are more and more often used include observations of the growth and life reactions of organisms that naturally inhabit the soil. Analyzes are mainly performed using stenobionts, i.e. organisms that have a low tolerance to rapidly changing environmental conditions. Most often, such indicator organisms that indicate the quality of soils are: microorganisms, plants and also soil animals. On the basis of observations of organisms selected for bioindication and comparing their reactions to the condition of the substrate, it is possible to assess, for example, the quality and degree of contamination with selected heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and changes in the reaction. The chapter presents an overview of selected studies on bioindicators of the soil environment.

The article deals with the problems of induction of the anatomical and morphological structure of plants of different life forms under the conditions of a long-term chronic action of ionising radiation on the territory of the Northern nuclear power plant. Currently, the study and assessment of the radioecological situation on the territory of the former Semipalatinsk nuclear test site, taking into account the ecological state of natural plant and animal populations, is of particular importance. The study of the reaction of living organisms, be it plants or animals, to different doses of chronic ionising radiation makes it possible to assess and diagnose the state of environmental quality, and these organisms themselves can serve as bioindicators of pollution. On the territory of the Semipalatinsk test site, at the experimental site “Balapan”, 3 sections with meadow type of soil were studied: polluted section no. 1 - the north-western shore of Lake Chagan, polluted section no. 2 - the north-eastern shore of Lake Chagan, and control section no. 3. For structural analysis, the study recorded the vegetative organs of plant species with an increased radiation background. It was found that when the EDR (exposure dose rate) of gamma radiation increases and the plant growth is stimulated. In the conditions of radioactive contamination, with an increase in the activity of alpha, beta and gamma radiation, plants response and changes occur in the internal structure of their vegetative organs. Such adaptive features arise under the influence of a complex of environmental factors, including radiation pollution.

Opis:
Heavy metals are an urgent environmental problem, since their high concentrations have a negative impact on soil chemistry. Solid domestic waste landfills are a direct source of heavy metals accumulation in soils. Landfills pollute and poison large areas around them. Heavy metals are concentrated in the surface layer of the soil 0–10 cm deep, and can later migrate into plants and further into living organisms. The article examines soil pollution by the total content of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, Ni, Co, Mn) in the areas adjacent to Tbilisi and Telavi (Georgia) landfills and on illegal landfill in the village of Anaga (Sighnaghi municipality). The results show that the soil cover of the territories adjacent to solid domestic waste landfills and illegal landfills is contaminated with heavy metals. The data obtained confirm the migration of heavy metals mainly in terms of the distance from the landfills. High concentrations of heavy metals in soils are characteristic of lead and cadmium. There is also a tendency towards a decrease in the content of lead, cadmium, copper, zinc with distance from the landfill of solid domestic waste.

Contamination generated by dumps is an environmental problem because the soils around the dumps are used for the cultivation of agricultural products and pastures, and could constitute a threat to human health. The contamination index and ecological risk potential for heavy metals in agricultural soils surrounding the solid waste dumps in Agua de las Vírgenes (AV) and El Eden (ED) in Huancayo were evaluated. The concentration of heavy metals in the soils was measured using an inductively coupled optical emission spectrophotometer. The average concentration of As, Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu, Fe and Zn in the soils was 25.77, 1.03, 6.09, 112.07, 48.52, 53733.33 and 349.10 mg/kg in AV and 14.35, 0.28, 2.85, 123.01, 57.47, 36137.50 and 414.31 mg/kg in ED respectively. The mean values of the contamination factor for As determined a very high soil contamination status at both sites. The order of mean Igeo values was As> Cd> Pb> Zn> Cu> Fe> Cr. The soils are strongly enriched with As and Cd. The highest risk index was for Cd, with a higher contribution to the overall potential risk index. The principal component analysis explained that 71% of the data set and the identified sources of heavy metals are the varied composition of wastes in general and crop irrigation with wastewater. In general, agricultural soils are characterized for a level of ecological risk that varies from high to very high. Among the measured heavy metals As, Cd and Pb pose significant health risks. Continuous monitoring of the level of contamination of soils affected by dump leachate and wastewater irrigation is suggested.

The soil samples were collected from 28 representative profiles in Al-Shamiyah city. The soil profiles were defined using virtual characterization. In this study, I-geo was used to analyze soil pollution. The goals and destinations of the I-geo readings Contamination of Cd, Ni, Pb, and Zn in various soil strata. I-geo (Cd) generally range from 0.58 to 4.71, I-geo (Ni) range from 0.09 to 4.07, I-geo (Pb) ranged range from 0.07 to 2.79, and I-geo (Zn) ranges from zero to 2.79, depicting the local differences in I-geo for pollutants in the research area. Suggesting that the research area had been heavily polluted from Cd in the varied layers of the soils. On the maps pertaining to Zn and Pb, the majority of the research area was primarily covered in the orange and blue hues, suggesting that a significant portion of the research area was likely to be severely polluted from Cd and Ni. Moreover, the land cover layouts of Ni in layers of the soils revealed concentrations rising towards to the western sections, which could be attributed to proximity to a major drain. The results display that its I-geo value of four trace metals generally range from non-pollute to significantly heavily polluted. The I-geo data show significant differences in levels of the Ni, Cd, Zn, and Pb in different soils strata. Including these findings, the soil in Al-Shamiya, Al-Qadisiyah Governorate contains high levels of Cd, Ni, Pb, and Zn. Industries of fossil fuel combustion, as well as other man-made wastes include agricultural nutrients, soil conditioners, and sludge, particularly, ammonium phosphate pollution in soils. The pollutant load index (PLI) reveals a baseline level of contamination in 28 locations, as well as a decline in soil quality in four others. Finally, assessing the danger of contamination for trace metals utilizing the I-geo and PLI by using the GIS method and multimodal models is a helpful and relevant strategy.

Oil pollution is a hazard both in terms of scale and toxicity. Oil and oil products cause poisoning, death of organisms and soil degradation. The natural self-purification of natural objects from pollution depends on the natural conditions of the region, the presence of moisture, heat and the activity of the vital activity of the soil biocenosis. Under the conditions of Siberia, where a low temperature regime is maintained for a long time, self-purification is a long process. As a result of the long industrial use of the Medvezhye oil and gas condensate field, the soils of this area have accumulated pollutants. Thus, it is required to assess the toxicity of the soil, as well as to provide the ways and methods to prevent its environmental pollution. One of the ways to restore disturbed landscapes is technical and biological reclamation, the features and results of which are considered in this study using the Medvezhye deposit sand pit as an example.

The immobilization effect of soil amendments on leaching and bioavailability of Pb, Zn and Cd in highly contaminated soils under industrial impact was studied by collecting the soils in the surroundings of Zn-Pb Smelter “Miasteczko Śląskie” in southern Poland as an example. Various amounts of four additives (phosphate fertilizer, limestone powder, bentonite rock and bog iron ore) were tested in laboratory experiments to compare the effectiveness of three dominant mechanisms of immobilization: precipitation of phosphates, pH increase, and sorption. The contents of metals before immobilization were determined by extraction in CaCl2, EDTA and aqua regia. Cadmium and zinc are mainly represented by soluble, bioavailable forms extractable in CaCl2, while lead by potentially bioavailable speciations extractable by EDTA. Most effective in the immobilization of these metals were the amendments increasing soil pH: limestone powder and phosphate fertilizer. Bog iron ore and bentonite were less effective because the soil pH was too low for efficient cation adsorption.

This research aimed to determine the physicochemical characteristics and heavy metal concentrations of agricultural soils used for grape and wheat production in Morocco in the Mohammedia Benslimane area. The organic matter (OM) content ranged from 0.6% to 2.93%. The degree of total nitrogen was higher in the wheat plots than in the vine plots in the Mohammedia and Benslimane regions. Total nitrogen average rates ranged from 0.04 to 0.5% and from 0.07 to 0.8% in the vine and wheat plots. These results imply that the soil was silty clay and clay texture, neutral to slightly acidic at all stations. The P2O5 concentrations were 11.15 ppm and 68.14 ppm under the vine and the wheat plots, respectively, while the potassium concentration ranged from 33.1 to 287.9 ppm and from 26.9 to 184.75 ppm under the vine and the wheat plots, respectively. Furthermore, the concentrations of Cd at a few stations exceeded the standard value (2 ppm), reaching 10.375 ppm. The Pb and Zn concentrations were higher in vineyard plots than in wheat plots. The Pb and Zn concentrations were 20.22 ppm and 148.60 ppm, respectively. This study reports updated information on the states of eight stations in Mohammedia and Benslimane. However, further research is necessary to determine the pollution factors in local practice crops and naturally growing plants at these stations to assess their impact on livestock and humans.

The environment is considered an ideal machine, a system in which nothing happens without reason. Every transformation, action and stimulus has consequences that are not always immediately plain to see. It is because the environment is like communicating vessels, or a complex organism, in which everything is interdependent, and the organs work together. Despite the processes’ complexity and intricate yet logical correlations between the elements, it is not a perfect system. Examples are weather anomalies and, in extreme cases, cataclysms. The problem arises when man interferes with the environment. By polluting almost every possible place, he initiates irreversible changes, degrading the environment. This paper presents an analysis of atmospheric air pollution in the town of Supraśl, surface water from the Supraśl river, and soil samples from a selected area.

Opis:
Chlorpyrifos-methyl (CM) is a broad-spectrum organophosphate insecticide, which is widely used in pest control. In this research, the isolation, and biochemical and molecular identification of bacterial strains obtained from three soils located in northeastern Algeria were carried out, as well as the evaluation of their ability to grow in the presence of CM. Out of 48 bacterial isolates between Gram-negative and Gram-positive identified, several were able to grow on mineral agar with at least 25 mg·l–1 of CM. Four bacteria showed the best growth capacity, were identified as Bacillus sp. H1-80, Brevibacterium frigoritolerans strain WJB99 and two Bacillus sp. strains GL5. The strains were tested for their ability to grow on liquid media with CM as the sole energy and carbon source. In general, these strains showed slow but significant growth visualized by the 600 nm turbidity control, suggesting that they could be used for bioremediation applications of CM polluted soils.
