Opis:
Fluorine and sodium chloride are common elements present in the water environment. According to WHO guidelines fluoride content in water cannot be not higher than 1.5 mF-/dm3. Elevated fluoride content was observed all over the world and it leads to many health issues. It can be removed with the usage of various methods (ion exchange, membrane processes, adsorption, precipitation). In this paper fluoride removal with nanofiltration usage was described. Tests were performed with the application of Amicon 86400 filtration cells. Two types of commercial nanofiltration membranes NP010P and NP030P (Microdyn Nadir) were used. Transmembrane pressure was established as 0.3 MPa. For lower fluoride concentrations (5 mgF-/dm3) NF process allowed to decrease fluoride content under level 1.5 mgF-/dm3. Removal efficiency decreased with increasing fluoride content. Membrane NP030P showed better separation properties. Sodium chloride influenced removal efficiency as well as fluoride adsorption on/in membranes during the process. According to obtained data, better hydraulic properties exhibited membrane NP010P. For both membranes decrease in permeate flux in comparison to pure water was noticed what was observed. Relative permeability was lowered even to 0.32.

Sixteen identified and three unidentified species belonging to six genera of zoosporic fungi were isolated from forty water samples which were collected from different fish and fish hatcheries farms at Abbassa city, Sharkiya governorate, Egypt, using sesame seeds baiting technique at 20±2°C. Saprolegnia and Achlya contributed the broadest spectra of species diversity amongst the other genera of zoosporic fungi. Saprolegnia diclina and Aphanomyces sp. were the most prevalent species of zoosporic fungi. The abundance of zoosporic fungal species in these aquacultures was correlated with some physicochemical characteristics of the water samples. The two dominant species of zoosporic fungi were tested for their tolerance of NaCl solution and its impact on some morphological and metabolic activities of these fungi. Saprolegnia diclina tolerated concentrations of NaCl solution till 12000 μg/ml whereas the maximum resistance of Aphanomyces sp. was 8000 μg/ml. The examined morphological aspects of the two studied fungal species, which included the colony diameters, the vegetative hyphae, zoosporogenesis, zoospores discharge, sexual reproductive structures and gemmae formation, were generally affected depending upon the tested fungal species and the applied dose of NaCl solution. The low treatments of NaCl solution were significantly stimulative compared with the control for protease production by S. diclina but higher doses were significantly suppressive. A significant decline in protease activity at all applications was found when Aphanomyces sp. was treated with NaCl solution. The total free amino acids and total protein content of S. diclina and Aphanomyces sp. mycelia were almost significantly increased relative to untreated controls at the low dose of NaCl solution and they were significantly dropped at the higher concentrations by the two zoosporic fungi.

Opis:
The main goal of the research presented in the article is to assess the impact of the destruction (degradation) of epoxy coatings, caused by the influence of a 25% aqueous solution of sodium chloride (brine), on the operational properties that determine the coatings reliability (durability). Samples of two-layer epoxy coatings (obtained from powder paints) were aged by immersing them in brine for a maximum period of 1680 h. The following criteria were used to assess the operational properties of the coatings: thickness, roughness and surface morphology, hardness, water absorption (mass increase), surface free energy. The FTIR and DSC tests performed showed a progressive development of the oxidation processes of the epoxy with the ageing period. The long-term impact of the brine resulted in the destruction of the coatings in the form of: craters, grooves, microcracks, including silver cracks. The contact of the coatings with brine also increased their: surface roughness (Ra, Rz, Rmax), thickness, mass, surface free energy, and decreased hardness and heat resistance.

There is a rising demand for salt-tolerant species for landscaping. Purpletop vervain is an excellent landscape plant for gardens and parks, with fragrant lavender to rose-purple flowers. However, little is known concerning the effect of sodium chloride on morphological characteristics, flowering and mineral uptake of purpletop vervain. In this study, carried out in 2013–2014, the plants of purpletop vervain were grown in pots in an unheated plastic tunnel. The plants were watered with 200 mM NaCl solution four times, every seven days. Salinity-exposed plants were characterized by slightly reduced plant height, weight of the aboveground part and visual score. Salt stress caused also an increase in leaf content sodium, chlorine and manganese. Salinity had no effect on earliness of flowering and content in leaves of phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, copper, zinc and iron. Purpletop vervain seems to be plant species able to tolerate salt stress under controlled conditions.

This paper presents ultrafiltration results of model BSA (bovine serum albumin) and MB (myoglobin) solutions prepared with or without NaCl addition. The protein concentrations in the solutions were equal to 0.05 g dm 3 for MB and 0.5 g dm 3 for BSA. The ultrafiltration tests were performed using a laboratory scale unit equipped with 90 mm ceramic disc membranes with a filtration area of 5:6-10-3 m2 and cut-off of 50 or 150 kDa. The tests were run under constant process conditions, i.e. a cross flow volume (CFV) of 5 ms-1, transmembrane pressure (TMP) of 0.2 MPa, temperature of 20 ◦C and NaCl concentration of 0 or 10 wt%. The installation worked in a semi-open mode with a continuous permeate discharge and retentate recycle. The performance of the membranes was measured with the permeate volumetric flow rate, JV (m3m 2s 1) while their selectivity was determined by the protein rejection, R. The paper evaluates and discusses the protein rejection mechanisms as well as the influence of the membrane cut-off and sodium chloride concentration in the feed on the flux decline during the ultrafiltration of BSA and MB. Moreover, it provides an analysis of the first fouling phase by applying usual filtration laws.

The high temperature drying process of corundum cylinders partially saturated with aqueous solutions of sodium chloride was investigated with neutron imaging technique accompanied with mass and temperature measurements. The statistical analysis of neutron images was applied in order to quantify the time evolution of the process. The substantial slowing down of drying with increasing salt concentration was found. This effect was attributed to increase of viscosity of the solution with increasing salt content as well as to the formation of an outer layer of NaCl on the sample surface.

The aim of this study was to assess the potential of cultivation of Pelargonium × hortorum cv. Survivor Dark Red in a substrate contaminated with sodium chloride. After applying 0.45, 0.96, 1.47, 1.98, 2.49, 2,99 g NaCl dm-3, the substrate contained 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200 mg Na+ and 287, 595, 903, 1211, 1519, 1827 mg Cl- dm3. Growing medium with natural sodium (22 mg Na+) and chloride (13 mg Cl-) content comprised the control. Electrical conductivity (EC) of the substrates was as follows: 0.11, 0.62, 1.28, 1.75, 2.42, 2.82, 3.72 mS cm-1. Water purified by reverse osmosis was used for watering the pelargonium plants. The effect of sodium chloride on the chemical composition of leaves was evaluated based on the analysis of leaf blades collected at the flowering stage. Sodium chloride negatively influenced all measured plant growth parameters. Increasing salinity also decreased the chlorophyll index values. Significant reduction in the number of inflorescences was recorded in plants grown at ≥ 800 mg Na+ and ≥ 1211 mg Cl- in 1 dm3 of peat substrate. However, the pelargonium plants grown in a substrate containing up to 600 mg Na and 903 mg Cl still retain high decorative value. The increasing sodium chloride content in peat substrate increased the concentrations of phosphorus and calcium in the leaves. Simultaneously, the concentrations of potassium and magnesium decreased, while the concentration of nitrogen was found to be stable. Despite increasing doses of sodium chloride, the content of N, P, K, Ca and Mg in pelargonium leaves fell within or slightly exceeded the established range of guideline values.

The effect of sodium chloride and calcium chloride on the fracture properties of whey protein concentrates (WPCs) and whey protein isolate (WPI) gels was investigated. Compression of gel samples was used to measure true shear stress at fracture and true shear strain at fracture. Investigated WPCs had such a great content of sodium and calcium ions, that they had a detrimental effect on shear stress values. Gels made from WPI and WPCs had similar salt- associated changes in shear stress at fracture, but shear strain responded in opposite way. Considering the content of calcium and sodium in concentrates, added NaCl and СаСІ2 influenced the fracture properties in the same way as WPI gels.

Salt stress is one of the most severe environmental factors that reduces and limits growth and development of plants. Abiotic stresses such as heavy metals, salinity, drought, temperature, UV-radiation, ozone causes drastic yield reduction in most of the crops. Especially salt stress affects around 20 of NaCl on germination and seedling growth of Zea mays L. Seeds of Zea mays were germinated in glass Petri- 100 × 15 mm diameter lined with blotting paper. Ten seeds were placed in each petri-dish. Petridishes were irrigated with 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175 and 200 mM concentrations of NaCl. A control was moistened with ten milliliters of distilled water. The germination percentage, water absorption of the seeds, water uptake percentage and the growth parameters were observed. The results obtained showed that the inhibition of the germination percentage, germination rate, water uptake, growth and biomass accumulation of the seedlings were observed to decrease with increasing NaCl concentrations. At the highest level of stress both plumule and radical decreased significantly. The salt stress decreased seed germination, biomass and growth of maize seedlings due to ion toxicity, decrease osmotic potential and oxidative stress.

Flotation of copper-bearing shale in aqueous solutions of NaCl at their different pH values was investigated. The tests were carried out in a laboratory flotation machine. The pH range was between 5 and 10 while NaCl concentrations were 0.5M, 1.0M and 2.0M. It was observed that the flotation recovery of the copper shale was increasing with the increase of pH and concentration of the salt solution. On the basis of thermodynamic and hydrodynamic considerations it was postulated that the increasing surface tension was responsible for better shale flotation observed with increasing salt concentration. The observed improved shale flotation caused by increasing pH is most likely due to changes in the properties of the thin film between particle and bubble including mosaic structure of water on the surface of shale. It was shown that the zeta potential of shale particles, zeta potential of air bubbles, solution surface tension, and shale hydrophobicity were not responsible for the increasing with pH recoveries.

The ion exchange method (dynamic method) was applied in the preconcentration of palladium(II) ions from the chloride solutions with sodium chloride addition. Varion resins such as the strongly basic anion exchange resins: Varion ADM and Varion ATM and the weakly basic anion exchange resin Varion ADAM were taken into account during the sorption process. The selectivity series were obtained based on the breakthrough curves of palladium(II) ions determined by means of dynamic method. Moreover, the distribution coefficients: weight and bed as well as the working anion exchange capacities were calculated. From the Varion resins — Varion ADAM is the most promising in the preconcentration of Pd(II).

In the present investigation, a comparative study was made on the effect of exogenous addition of sodium chloride on net leaf photosynthesis (CO2 uptake) in Aegiceras corniculatum (L.) Blanco, a dicotyledonous mangrove species. The net leaf photosynthesis of A. corniculatum was modified in the presence of sodium chloride, it may be called a preferential halophyte. Salinity is one of the most significant environmental challenges also abiotic constraints limiting plant productivity. A. corniculatum could tolerate up to 800 mM sodium chloride concentrations. The net leaf photosynthesis rate was increased with increasing NaCl salinity up to 400 mM. This concentration was found to be the optimum salinity level for this species. In conclusion, it may be inferred that sodium chloride promoted the photosynthesis concentrations upto optimum level of 400 mM in Aegiceras corniculatum (L.) Blanco. beyond 400 mM NaCl decreased the CO2 uptake. The maximum photosynthetic obtained at 400 mM NaCl on the l20th day.

Opis:
Selective separation of Na-feldspar (NaAl3SiO8) from K-feldspar (KAl3SiO8) by flotation appears to be the only alternative in commonly found mixed-type ore formations. For this purpose, various mechanisms in various studies have been proposed by which selective separation can be achieved in the presence of salt ions. These mechanisms under different flotation conditions are systematically discussed in this study. Literature review reveals that two adsorption mechanisms are operating in the presence of Na+ ions and natural pH: Ion exchange and ion adsorption. In mixed feldspar systems, the mineral surface properties change due to ion exchange of counter ions on K-feldspar surface and become suitable for amine adsorption, while Na-feldspar surface is suppressed due to co-ion adsorption leading to limited amine adsorption. Similar mechanisms occur in acidic conditions with fluorine ions which increases the dispersion of particles and provides selectivity for K-feldspar by forming AlSiF-amine complexes. K-feldspar at alkaline pH with NaOH is activated with fluorine ions at the previous flotation stages and then floated with amine releasing K ions into the solution. The ion exchange/ion adsorption mechanism seems effective in alkaline as well as in natural and acidic conditions.
