Opis:
The following article presents the goals and assumptions contained in the project entitled “Psychosocial influences concerning disabled people’s professional activity”. The study was conducted in four stages: (1) document analysis and literature review presenting research concerning how disabled people function on the job market; (2) expert opinions, including disabled people; (3) qualitative studies employing Maxqda2 to analyze information gathered from 311 interviews; and (4) quantitative research on a sample of 1498 participants with various types of disabilities (hearing, sight, physical, somatic, and psychological) conducted in 2007. The following article presents the first set of results obtained, referring to connections on a socio-demographic level (place of residence, gender, age, education, and marital status) as well as those isolating disability characteristics (type, level, and genesis) against degree of life satisfaction. Comparisons were executed for five groups with various employment statuses: employed, those looking for employment who had worked before, those looking for employment who had no previous employment experience, previously employed but had no intention of returning to the workforce and those who had never worked and had no intention of becoming employed. Lowest feelings of life satisfaction were among those not looking for employment whereas highest levels of life satisfaction occurred amongst employed participants. Important risk factors: gender (female), age (elderly), low education, marital status (single), place of residence (non-city dwellers), disability (innate and level).

In a dynamically developing scientific environment, there is a tendency toward creating mechanisms that objectively evaluate the output of individual scientific units. Selected indicators can be applied, inter alia, to work out specific criteria for awarding funds for scientific research activities. One of the most important indicators used is the impact of researchers’ publications, which today determines the overall outcome of the evaluation of a research unit. The key question in this context is whether any socio-demographic factors are correlated with the impact of the scholarship work of individual researchers and, if yes, what those indicators are, specifically. The purpose of this study was to determine the existence and, if confirmed, the nature of correlation between the impact of researchers’ publications and selected socio-demographic factors such as: age, gender and family status. The study sample included all the academic employees of the Faculty of Political Sciences and International Studies, Nicolaus Copernicus University, in Toruń (Poland). The results demonstrated that the socio-demographic factors considered showed little correlation with publications’ impactfulness as measured in the Polish evaluation system of research units.

Opis:
Introduction. The presented study of 4,535 children aged 7–17 years in the Upper Silesian region of Poland yielded 186 cases of previously known asthma, and 44 children with newly diagnosed asthma. The aim of the presented study was to identify non-medical factors that could explain why children with a newly established diagnosis (‘undiagnosed asthma’) had not been diagnosed in the past. Materials and method. The study was performed according to a case-control design. Parents of the children answered questionnaires on socio-economic status and family-related factors. Statistical determinants of undiagnosed asthma were explored using raw (OR) and logistic odds ratios with their 95% confidence intervals (logOR, 95%CI). Results. Children with undiagnosed asthma were younger compared to the group with previously known asthma (11.3±2.1 vs. 12.6±2.5 years; p=0.0008). Newly diagnosed cases were more frequent in children who had less parental attention (less than 1 hour/day spent by parent with child – OR=4.36; 95%CI: 1.76–10.81) and who were not registered with specialized health care (OR=2.20; 95%CI: 0.95–5.06). Results of logistic regression analysis suggest that under-diagnosis of asthma is related to age below 12 years – logOR = 3.59 (95%CI: 1.28–10.36), distance to a health centre > 5 km – logOR = 3.45 (95%CI: 1.05–11.36), time spent with child < 1 hour/day – logOR = 6.28 (95%CI: 1.98–19.91). Conclusion. Among non-medical determinants of undiagnosed asthma the age of a child plays a major role. Another factors of importance is the large distance between residence and health centre, and low parental attention at home.

Opis:
This research was inspired by broad discussions on the motives for saving. We examine the relationship between the motives for saving and the socio-economic characteristics of households in the eurozone, Croatia, Hungary and Poland, such as: the social type of the household, gender of the reference person (RP), their age, level of education, marital status, taking into account the differences in the value of these households’ financial assets. For this purpose, we used data from the Household Finance and Consumption Survey. The logit model was used to analyse with maximum likelihood estimation the different saving motives and country groups. We also used a Poisson model for a count variable. The results demonstrate that the social type of households is crucial in determining their motives for saving, particularly for child education and leaving an inheritance. Additionally, we identify differences in the number and sets of saving motives between households from countries with both high and low levels of financial assets. In countries where households are less well-off, the motive for saving to purchase residential estate is of greater importance. Moreover, households with more financial assets – mainly from the countries of Western Europe – show more concern about saving for old age and investment.
W tym celu wykorzystano dane z Household Finance and Consumption Survey. Dodatkowo zidentyfikowano różnice w liczbie i zestawach motywów oszczędzania pomiędzy gospodarstwami domowymi z krajów o zarówno wysokim, jak i niskim poziomie aktywów finansowych. Ponadto gospodarstwa domowe z większymi zasobami finansowymi – głównie z krajów Europy Zachodniej – wykazują większą troskę o oszczędzanie na starość i inwestycje.

Opis:
Background. The introduction and maintenance of healthy habits in the field of physical activity at the early stage of life is particularly important for public health. With increasing of public awareness in physical activity, researchers are increasingly questioning its determinants in different age groups. In this paper we focus on variables such as age, sex and place of residence. Objectives. To determine what selected socio-demographic factors influence the level of physical activity of school youth from the eastern region of Poland in different domains of daily life. Material and Methods. A random sample of 916 Polish school youth from Secondary Schools from Eastern Region of Poland aged 16-18 was interviewed in spring 2016 by diagnostic survey method with the use of the official Polish long version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Results. Analysing the relationship between gender and the level of physical activity statistically significant differences were found in all domains in favour of boys. The level of total physical activity in girls was 5345.5 MET-min./week, whereas in boys – 6556.6 MET-min./week. In the area of total physical activity, the highest values were observed in pupils from small towns and villages, with lower values in the youth living in large and medium-sized cities. When the relationship of age with the level of physical activity in particular domains was examined, only the activity in the work/ school domain (p = 0.0129) spoke in favour of the youngest pupils (2578.7 MET-min./week) when compared to the oldest ones (2226.4 MET-min./week). Conclusions. The level of physical activity in young people from the Eastern region of Poland is decreasing with age, both in girls and boys. It is therefore important, especially for the group emerging adulthood, to offer a wide variety of updated, involving, age and gender-oriented school physical activity classes that could be easily practised outside the school environment to improve the level of physical activity in leisure domain.
Wprowadzenie. Cel pracy. Poznanie jakie wybrane czynniki socjodemograficzne warunkują aktywność fizyczną młodzieży ponadgimnazjalnej ze wschodniego regionu Polski w różnych domenach życia. Materiał i metoda. Badania przeprowadzono wiosną 2016 roku na losowo wybranej grupie 916 uczniów ponadgimnazjalnych, będących w przedziale wieku 16-18 lat. Badania przeprowadzono metodą sondażu diagnostycznego, przy wykorzystaniu oficjalnej polskiej wersji Międzynarodowego Kwestionariusza Aktywności Fizycznej (IPAQ-wersji długiej). Wyniki. Analizując związek płci z poziomem aktywności fizycznej stwierdzono istotne statystycznie zróżnicowanie z całkowitym poziomem aktywności fizycznej we wszystkich analizowanych obszarach na korzyść chłopców. Poziom całkowitej aktywności fizycznej u dziewcząt wynosił 5345,5 MET-min./tydz., podczas gdy u chłopców - 6556,6 MET-min./tydz. W obszarze całkowitej aktywności fizycznej zaobserwowano najwyższe wartości u uczniów z małych miast i wsi, z niższymi wartościami u młodzieży mieszkającej w dużych i średnich miastach. Gdy badano związek wieku z poziomem aktywności fizycznej w poszczególnych domenach życia, jedynie aktywność w domenie praca/szkoła (p = 0,0129) przemawiała na korzyść najmłodszych uczniów (2578,7 MET-min./tydz.) w porównaniu do najstarszych (2226,4 MET-min./tydz.). Wnioski.

Introduction. Socio-demographic factors may affect the decision making associated with the disease and the long-term results of treatment. Objective. Exploring the relationship between socio-demographic factors of women treated for breast cancer and decision- making associated with the disease and treatment. Material and methods. The study involved 100 women aged 30 to 72 (mean: 57 years) who were treated at the Oncology Center in Bydgoszcz in 2013–2014 due to breast cancer. A survey questionnaire on socio-demographic factors and data on knowledge about prevention and disease was used in the study. Results. The number of women performing breast self-examination decreased with age; 83% of patients over 50 years old and 76% (p = 0.0001) over 69 years old underwent mainly mammography (p = 0.03). Self-detection of breast tumor also decreased with age and was detected more frequently by the medical personnel (p = 0.0001). More educated women (85%) examined themselves more often than those with primary and vocational education (p = 0.001). According to our assessment, the number of women with knowledge about cancer decreased with age (p = 0.004). The same was true for women in a very good and good financial situation, with 94% of them declaring a higher knowledge level (p = 0.001). Conclusions. Women’s knowledge about breast cancer is not satisfactory, especially in older and less educated women. They obtain knowledge from the Internet mainly and from the medical staff in the smallest degree. Young women up to 49 years of age perform self-examination to detect breast cancer most often, while older women use mammography. Almost all women immediately report to the doctor and are admitted to clinics after detecting lesions with mammography or self-examination.

Objectives. The aim of the study was to analyze the relationship between selected socio-demographic factors and tooth loss in patients using removable dentures. Materials and method. The study comprised 321 individuals, all of whom were residents of the Lublin province in southeastern Poland. The study investigated the influence of socio-demographic factors, such as gender, age and education on the severity of tooth loss. To analyze the structure of tooth loss, the classifications by Galasińska-Lansberger and by Eichner were used. The results were analyzed statistically. Results. Edentulous gaps and lateral edentulism in the maxilla were significantly more frequent in women, while mixed tooth loss was more frequent in men, while the percentages of men and women with maxillary edentulism were similar. There were no statistically significant gender-specific differences concerning mandibular edentulism. The number of individuals who reported total tooth loss in both the maxilla and the mandible increased with age, the differences being statistically significant. Individuals with primary education only were significantly more likely to report maxillary edentulism, while a high percentage of those with secondary or higher education reported edentulous gaps in the maxilla. There was no statistically significant relationship between education and the type of tooth loss in the mandible. Conclusions. There is a strong relationship between age and education level on the one hand, and the severity of tooth loss on the other. However, gender exerts no significant influence on tooth loss, which was confirmed using 2 classifications of edentulism.

Background. In Bangladesh, terrible degradation in the breastfeeding period has occurred with rapid urbanization in recent years that is causing a shortage of child nourishment. Identifying the risk factors of breastfeeding duration is important for planning nutritional programs and strategies. Objectives. This study tries to identify influential demographic and socio-economic factors that affect the breastfeeding period for reducing child nutrition deficiency. Material and methods. The study attempts to proceed with data collected from an observational study entitled the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS) 2014. The breastfeeding period (Ordinal exogenous variable) is classified into three groups: 0–5-months, 6–23 months and at least 24 months. Gamma, chi-square and linear-by-linear statistics are used to identify the associated factors that have an impact on the breastfeeding period. A test of parallelism is conducted to evaluate the proportional odds. The polytomous logistic regression (PLR) model and the proportional odds (PO) model are used to find the marginal effect of demographic and socio-economic predictors that affect the breastfeeding period. Results. Parental educational attainment, wealth index, division, religion, mother’s BMI, drinking water source, household members, amenorrhea and abstaining, respectively, are the most significant factors that influence the breastfeeding period. The PLR model is also more precise than the PO model for indicating the marginal effect among those vital factors for the breastfeeding period. Conclusions. PLR is an appropriate model to recognize the effect of predictors of breastfeeding duration instead of the PO model and other measures.

Introduction. Diabetes is a civilisation disease creating a serious challenge for public health. In Poland, approximately 2 million people suffer from diabetes, of which about 25% are unaware of their illness. A considerable part of persons with diabetes experience complications related with the disease. Objective. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between elements of the state of health and socio-demographic characteristics of diabetic patients treated in the Diabetes Clinic at the Institute of Rural Health (IMW) in Lublin, eastern Poland, and the occurrence of depressive symptoms in these patients. Materials and method. The study was conducted in 2017–2018 among patients treated in the Diabetes Clinic at the Institute of Rural Health in Lublin, by the method of a diagnostic survey using the Beck’s Depression Inventory and an author-constructed questionnaire, as well as data from the patients’ medical records. The study included 314 patients from the Diabetes Clinic who expressed their informed consent to participate in the research. Results. The study showed that diabetes is a disease which predisposes for the occurrence of depression. The occurrence of depressive symptoms of various degrees of intensity was confirmed in more than a half of the examined patients. Among the factors which exerted a significant effect on the occurrence of depressive symptoms were: diabetic neuropathy, type 2 diabetes, high BMI value, lack of occupational activity, poor material standard, and the need to obtain assistance in daily functioning due to the fact of being ill with diabetes. Conclusions. It is necessary to implement routinely performed examinations into the diagnostic-therapeutic process to assess the state of psychological health of diabetic patients, which would allow sufficiently early application of appropriate psychological or psychiatric intervention.
