Opis:
During the last three decades, few essential transformations of Lithuanian society took place – from a closed (according to the terminology of H. Bergman and K. Popper) soviet society during a short period of open society functioning it evolved into a holed (according to P. Aleksandravičius) society. The Republic of Lithuania becoming the rule of law and creation of liberal democracy was a favourable context of the transformations mentioned. These transformations were ensured not only by establishment of free market economy but also by corresponding legislation and implementation of legal norms. The article analyses inter-directional methodological possibilities to reveal a legal identity of Lithuanian society. Creation of such possibilities is based on three ideas of Western civilisation: 1. The idea of compliance with the rules of common or social (now – public) behaviour. 2. The idea of legitimate powers of sovereign to create common (social or public) behaviour rules and to organize and control their implementation. It evolved into the idea of the rule of law. 3. The idea of natural rights and freedom. It evolved into the protection of human rights and freedom. Based on these ideas and analysis of peculiarities of the process of the Republic of Lithuania becoming the rule of law, there are justified five stages of Lithuanian society’s legal identity development.

Peasants, and more general rural dwellers, were the only class of Polish pre-war society which did not disintegrated in result of the World War Two, and became a recruitment base of a new working class and a new intelligentsia. They transferred their peasant-rooted value systems and their mentality shaped by a permanent poverty of Polish rural areas into their new environments, mostly urban and industrial, and in this way contributed to the

The situation of man in the beginning of 21st century is known as the postmodern. The concept of postmodernism indicates theoretically more or less elaborated opinions on current status of the process of globalization. The process of globalization does not produce only progress and positives but also threats, risks and transformation of man which are not only humanizing. The problem of postmodernism is mastery of plurality, heterogenity and otherness of ways, values and experiences of life, specialization of branches of science and societal development trends so that it contributes to digni ed human life in society. The concept of postmodernism and its consequences for education of the younger generation project into conceptions of educational institutions, education in the family, but they also nd their re ection in state policy due to the younger generation. Social changes, which occured at the end of 20th century, are part of global context of economical, political, social and cultural evolution. Their reach and importance must be seen into the future and in these wider connections.

What are closed societies? What are the threats? How does one build an open society? Are the above questions important and current? Popper claimed that they are. The article analyses Popper’s theory of an open and closed society. The first part of the article considers the ‘closed’ society and describes its characteristics. These include obedience, indoctrination, a constant form of mobilisation, caste, state autarchies, nationalism, glorification of war. In the second part of the article, the author introduces the axiological dimension of an open society. The principles and values on which Popper based his theory are considered.

The concept of the society of consumption says that in this type of society everything is “for sale” if there is a consumer for this. That means that one can sell not only products and services but people, ideas and values as well. On the other hand, people face many global risks. Confronted by risks, they have become equal regardless of their origins, education or financial status. Anxiety about future and awareness of fragility of a human life causes people to be more likely to indulge themselves with different pleasures. They want to “have fun before they die”. The media, advertisements and medicine offer a variety of products and services that are to make one`s life better and to bring more pleasure and happiness to them. Contemporary hedonism is, after all, different in the sense that it does not avoid pain and suffering. People are willing to suffer in the name of the future pleasure. Will this race to satisfy whims and desires end someday? Will the fast defeat the carnival? Is there a place for reflection and altruism? These are some questions that this paper examines.

The subject of this article concerns the community impact of the Church within a society. This issue is primarily reviewed on a social-historic ground while taking into account the theological perspective. In the traditional model of a society, religion played an important role in integrating, organising and legislating a nation and state as well as setting the code of conduct for individuals who live within. Throughout the centuries the influence of religion on a community had taken different scopes and forms. It was transformed, i.e. weakened and reoriented, in order to satisfy individual’s needs. Nonetheless, in a society the Church (religion) remains as an abiding reservoir of national and social symbols, which serves as a criterion of moral judgments, a „provider“ of existential meaning, a source of internal motivation and support during critical situations as well as a „barrier“ of perspective concerning the ultimate destiny of mankind.

The author discusses the idea of ecological society that is described as sustainable society or as constant development society or simply as eco-development society. These three notions are not synonimie. For example, according to deep ecology the notion of constant development is contradict as it cannot be agreed with the idea of the finite world, where all the processes of development have natural external limits. The main part of author’s discussion is devoted to the structure of the survival problem that is analyzed in the global aspect. This perspective points out ecological and social conditions of survival concerning the division into postindustrial societies and the third world. The discussed problems differs in both the cases. We could observe a sort of argument whether the biggest threat were caused by the Western World (the north) or undeveloped world (the south)? Sociologists should be particularly interested in social conditions of survival such as the world of values and demographic, economic, technical possibilities for developing human desires.

Opis:
This article attempts to diagnose social communication in post-1989 Poland. It analyses the issue against the larger backdrop of the most familiar communication theories formulated by representatives of the contemporary humanities (Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of creative discourse, Lyotard’s dialogue as the differentiation of rationality,Waldensfels’s category of understanding and communication,Charles Taylor’s communitarianism). Another important reference point in addition to these theoretical conceptualisations is the philosophy of Józef Tischner who devoted many of his essays to dialogue in Polish social life, both in communist times and after the fall of the communist regime. The author proposes a diagnosis of the crisis of social communication in Poland. This crisis is rooted in the weakening of community bonds and the resulting lack of foundations on which dialogic society, based on trust and receptiveness to new experiences and ideas, the prerequisites for civil activity, could be constructed. Two forms of communication have taken its place: individualistic communication (the individual’s world is constricted to personal experiences) and collectivistic communication (the individual unreflectively accepts the current social stereotypes and views them as obvious truths). Such an attitude leads to the development and fortification of the “culture of distrust” syndrome with its extremely significant social consequences. This is particularly visible in the context of the quality of public debate and the relations between the government and society. Such phenomena as poor voter turnout, negligible participation in voluntary associations, lack of confidence in the authorities and interpersonal relations are all symptoms of the crisis of social communication

For the last decade there are characteristic two processes, which are mutually supplemented but directed on a miscellaneous: globalization process and the process of division, individualization. These processes play an important role not only in global economy, but also in everyday life. We collide with increasing amount of opinions, values, and methods of activity organizations. In a context of two complementary processes - globalization and division, the problems of cultures variety and identity are considered. The problem of mutual understanding and dialogue between the cultures becomes acuteness in modern conditions of development. In the society, where the problem of cultures variety is not just the academic problem, but requires decision in everyday life, becomes ripe a question: is that possible to consider non-European cultures equal to European? What are the criterions of an estimation of culture equivalence, by what parameters is it possible to estimate? Certainly the parameter of tolerance to the differences belongs to the strongest parameters, and we consider our culture mature, because it tolerantly concerns differences, but those representatives of our culture, that don't do that we consider as barbarians. The world is doomed for cultures variety which is a great gift for all of us. This term has a lot of measurements and forms of contacts between cultures, that that conducts to creation of absolutely new culture. Variety cultures pawn the tolerance first of all for variety-ethnic societies, so the possibility of dialogue, necessity of mutual trust creation, as a basis of global society creation. Only the joint activity makes some chances for the global problems resolving, and it is possible in borders of historical integration of Europe, including liquidation of division on "two Europe" - western and eastern.

The Society of Physical sciences (phisycs, chemistry and mineralogy) has been an important Romanian scientific society since its establishment, in 1890 until the middle of the twentieth century. This paper seeks to provide an analysis of its activity in the first two decades of existence, a less studied period, namely how its enterprises contributed to the dissemination and spread of the latest scientific ideas within Romania’s culture. The society was founded at the initiative of some of the most proeminent Romanian scientists of that period and, until the end of the nineteenth century, it expanded its sphere of activity by including sections on mathemathics and natural history. Therefore, its activity, exemplified by public conferences, presentation of members’ personal scientific endeavors, intellectual debates or scientific missions, reflected the general development of physical sciences in Romania in that epoch. This research is based mostly on a close scrutiny of society’s scientific journal.

The aim of the paper is to present the European gigabit society which is perceived by European Union’s leaders as a model of the future European society and economy. It is based on new digital technologies of the XXI century and on new, very high capacity mobile telecommunications networks. The rapid growth of information being processed and transmitted through electronic communications networks needs new high-speed and highly reliable broadband networks essential to economic growth, competitiveness and innovation as well as better quality products, services and the citizen’s satisfaction. The 5G communications network is the solution which is perceived as a type of network which should resolve these problems. In the paper the concept of the European gigabit society is clarifi ed, the 5G technology and its level of development in the European Union and in its Member States are described including Poland vis-à-vis the rest of the world. The European gigabit society is already under development and the 5G communication network is crucial to its success. It should be widely available in Europe including Poland. The paper is based on the analysis of official documents of the European Union and its Member States including Poland, official reports of the most active electronic telecommunications companies providing and implementing 5G technologies and on talks with representatives of some of the ones which are active on the Polish market.

In practice, this means that copyrights (which, for the online society, are what ownership rights for the industrial society are) have no serious authority. Informal norms of the exchange of digital information goods (called the “copy culture”) are not accordant with regulations of the formal copyright institution. The main goal of this paper is to determine the importance of copyrights for relationships taking place in the online society. In the paper, a large part of the considerations regards the bi-polarity of the copyright idea that protects authors on the one hand yet prevents the socalled author's monopoly on the other. In the course of considerations, the author made an attempt to verify the hypothesis stating that the bi-polarity of copyrights responds to the needs of the online society; however, the formal copyright institution has no such serious authority as the institution of ownership rights to tangible things. The research method applied in this paper is of a deductive nature. Considerations are based on an analysis of the copyright idea as well as on the traffic, extent, and content on the Internet – in other words, flows within the online society.

Opis:
Contemporary societies are all multicultural societies. One of the consequences of this fact is the necessity of transformation of educational systems in such a way that the systems will serve a multicultural society and its variety. Different standpoints in the subject of multicultural education are taken under consideration. Advocates of adjusting educational system to the conditions of multicultural society, among whom the voice of Will Kymlicka is outstanding, argue that each individual is firmly attached to her cultural group. In a way everybody is a member of cultural minority, because each individual refers to some values which are not shared by the majority. Multicultural education is necessary if we don't want to deprive the students of their essential cultural roots during the educational process. Against this background the opponent argument of Brian Barry is outlined. For Barry multicultural education doesn't help the individual to function in contemporary liberal society. The difficulties met by the individuals from the minority groups in universal educational systems are exaggerated according to Barry. The different views on the problem of multicultural education are caused by the different understanding of the foundations of human activity. The advocates of multicultural education are primary concerned of culture, values and social conditions of individual identity while their opponents put at the first place successful work of political community and concern for individual liberty.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to criticize the global civil society as a counterpower, i.e. social power opposing to the rule of bureaucracy and global capital. The basic point of reference are the theories of Manuel Castells and Ulrich Beck, representing the movement under discussion. By means of comparing them the author wishes to indicate the weaknesses common to the discourse around the global civil society as a counterpower. The main flaw of this discourse turns out to be the insufficient recognition of agency. Next, the grounds for attractiveness of this model are indicated as well as the contradictions inherent to it. In the end, the author reflects on the usefulness of the simplified approach to the global civil society and presents an outline of an alternative model. He proposes a wave-corpuscle metaphor, which may serve as means of further search for an adequate model of society on a global level.

Knowledge and democracy are commonly viewed the social phenomena and practices which should support each other and should be mutually dependent. However, a knowledge society cannot be fully reconciled with the democratic system as the latter produces ideologies and inspires actions that are mutually contradictory and do not always do a good service to democracy. However, there is nothing peculiar about it since knowledge is based on democratisation, and this is best exemplified in tertiary education. However, one may, and must, eliminate barriers preventing access to knowledge, and this is the purpose that democracy today needs to serve.

The culture of slavery is a product of functional dynamics in human society that seeks to sustain unbalanced power relations among interacting persons for political, economic, social or intellectual benefits. This reality is part and parcel of human history and every epoch has to deal with slavery based on its cultural anthropological resources. This paper proposes the argument that in human history the dynamics of the culture of slavery is similar; but the difference consists in the material of domination at the behest of every age or civilisation. Consequently, this work seeks to deconstruct the culture of slavery in traditional African societies and the emerging global society so that their dynamics of slave culture may stand out. Robert Merton’s theory of structural functionalism, and Orlando Patterson’s theory on slavery and race theories are used as the theoretical frameworks for understanding the culture of slavery. With this, the x-ray of the dysfunctions of the culture of slavery is germane so that the various means of freedom or controlling it in the twenty-first century could be arrived at.

The paper shows the phenomenon of popular culture against the background of modern society. The latter society, in view of its properties, constitutes perfect conditions for the development of the culture in question. The variety of bits of information „floating” through modern society, the large number of principles, values, attitudes or life styles make up a mirror in which the „image” of popular culture is reflected. The paper turns our attention to specific processes and phenomena characteristic of today society. Accordingly, popular culture has this particular shape. The paper stresses the role of modern society in shaping popular culture, and shows that there is an obvious relationship between the two phenomena. Besides, it makes us aware that popular culture is not a phenomenon isolated from reality, or a phenomenon which is „beyond us”. Rather, it is something that we, more or less consciously, create and in which we participate.

Purpose: The aim of the paper is to analyse entrepreneurial behaviour of Polish society and level of entrepreneurship in Poland in the years 2014-2018. Design/methodology/approach: The first part of the article is based on an analysis of literature on the issues discussed. Then, based on the GEM Reports, the various manifestations of entrepreneurship and its level in Poland in 2014-2018 was assessed. Findings: The conducted research indicates that more and more Poles see business opportunities in their environment and do not feel fear of failure. On the other hand, fewer people plan to set up their own business, which is undoubtedly the reflection of a good situation in the labour market, which allows people to freely choose between their own business and labour for hire, which, in turn, affects a decline in entrepreneurial intentions. The better motivation structure of young entrepreneurs is also visible in Poland, as most people start their own business seeing it as an opportunity rather than necessity. Originality/value: The analysis allows the identification of areas requiring changes. Therefore, it may constitute the basis for the government to take appropriate actions to increase the level and quality of entrepreneurial activity.

Namely, the nation state is characterized by two strategies defining the attitude to the cultural diversity of society. It is a strategy of cultural homogenization and a pluralistic. The emergence of a pluralistic strategy begins with the occurrence and eventual growth of phenomena and processes referred to as multiculturalism and multicultural society.

It is difficult to characterize Ukrainian society as fully active or passive, as, on the one hand, public participation and involvement in political life as well as large mobilization in situations where civil interests are violated are clearly visible, and, on the other, we can notice a decrease of political activity as a consequence of these events. The aim of the present work was to analyze and explain the specificity of the functioning of Ukrainian society in the years 2000 – 2012. The study was conducted with the author’s own designed tool based on the concept of ideal types developed by Max Weber. The analysis of political apathy used a dissonant category of political activity and the conclusions were drawn on the basis of whether the legislation of Ukraine promotes an active attitude of society and the extent to which the provisions of the law are reflected in real involvement of Ukrainian citizens in political matters. The results show that participation of Ukrainian society in different forms of political activity does not entail its full realization, while the fact that Ukrainian citizens got involved in public affairs excludes the recognition of Ukrainian society as fully apathetic. Thus, in the case of Ukraine, we are dealing with a hybrid society characterized by political activity with elements of political apathy.

The article departs from the discussion of the sources of the scholar interest in civil society and proceeds to the functional expectations about it. It claims that the concept of civil society, as it is frequently used in scientific and political debates, has specific cultural roots, which makes a trans-cultural analysis difficult or perhaps even impossible. Furthermore, the article addresses three conceptual problems of civil society, namely the issue of what constitutes civil society, its autonomy and impact as well as the challenge of civil society to the state. The central argument of the article is that in order to examine the impact of civil society on governance and democracy, it is recommendable to include three levels of analysis, namely the structure and functions of civil society (including also the possibly negative impact of civil society), the type of state co-existing with civil society as well as the character of the relationship between state and civil society.

Opis:
“Diffused religion” is to be understood in at least a double sense. First of all, it is diffused in that it comprises vast sections of the population and goes beyond the simple limits of church religion. Besides, it has become widespread, since it has been shown to be a historical and cultural result of the almost bi-millennial presence of the Catholic institution in Italy and of its socializing and legitimizing action. However values diffused in the Italian civil society can be considered as a form of conflict with the established institution of Catholic Church. Civil society shows a peculiar trend towards civic freedoms and ethical pluralism. Although the Catholic perspective is dominant, the civil society prefers a different system of values, even though not so much different from ecclesiastical social doctrine. This way there is a public space where religion is not the reference point and other perspectives take place.

Opis:
The article concerns homosexuality as a social phenomenon, constructed and regulated by cultural definition and norms. Historical changes of these definitions go hand in hand with the evolution of social sciences’ approach to non-normative sexualities. These transformations are reflected in language, which in turn heavily influence the processes of constructing sexual identities. This article presents excerpts from research which illustrates the aforementioned phenomena. The research consisted of biographic-narrative interviews with gay men who built the core of their sexual identity in times of Polish People’s Republic, where available language resources were more of a barrier than aid in such processes.

The article addresses selected problems related to the perspective on the development of Industry 4.0 and social and cultural changes that accompany this development and lead toward the so-called post-digital society. In the field of industry, the changes concern, among others, the functioning of various organizations, and in the perspective of post-digital society – human beings and their relations with the world of technology. These changes lead to an increase in the role of technological factors, hence the current revival of technological determinism, and this, in turn, has to do with questions regarding human subjectivity. In this context, questions regarding humans also revolve around the need to acknowledge their increasing capabilities and scope of freedom, and on the other hand, their loss of autonomy in relation to the world of technology.

Opis:
This article is situated in the humanistic sociology and social anthropology approach. In this approach, civil society is viewed as a society’s style of culture with respect to individual participation in group life based on common moral order. Its objective is to try to determine the extent to which western conceptions of civil society can be transferred to Chinese culture. It also strives to reconstruct civil behaviour patterns in China from a historical perspective. The basic tenet of this article is that, in the course of its evolution, Chinese culture developed various motivation and action patterns which may be the beginnings of a civil engagement. It is possible to formulate such a tenet on the assumption that civil society in contemporary China is largely based on tradition. It is tradition which defines the forms of non-institutional, self-organizing “second society.” One of the consequences of the adoption of this tenet is this article’s focus on analysis of the barriers against, and opportunities for, further development of civil society in contemporary China.
