Sytuacja osób z niepełnosprawnościami ulega zasadniczej przemianie w ostatnich dziesięcioleciach. Przyczyniają się do tego zmiany zachodzące w samym środowisku osób z niepełnosprawnościami, które aktywnie włączają się do walki o swoje prawa oraz upowszechniający się społeczny model definiowania niepełnosprawności. Stwarza to warunki, w których tożsamości osób z niepełnosprawnościami mogą ulec przedefiniowniu. Szczególnie dotyczy to osób podejmujących aktywne działania na rzecz swojego środowiska, których tożsamość jest konstruowana w oparciu o nowe role społeczne i związane z nimi działania, polegające na zaangażowaniu w aktywności mające na celu zmianę położenia osób z niepełnosprawnościami w społeczeństwie. Zasadniczym celem artykułu jest pokazanie, na ile w środowisku osób z niepełnosprawnościami wśród osób aktywnie działających na jego rzecz kształtują się dziś pozytywne tożsamości oparte na afirmacji różnorodności, a na ile wciąż jeszcze postrzegają oni niepełnosprawność jako piętno, powodujące wykluczenie osób z niepełnosprawnościami ze społeczeństwa. Badanie zrealizowano za pomocą wywiadu narracyjnego z osobami aktywnie działającymi na rzecz środowiska osób z niepełnosprawnościami, aby zobaczyć, jakie przyjmują tożsamości.
The situation of people with disabilities has been fundamentally transformed in the last decades. Changes in the environment of people with disabilities contribute to this. People with disabilities are actively involved in fighting for their rights. This is also due to the widespread social model of defining disability. This creates conditions in which the identity of persons with disabilities may be redefined. This is particularly true for those who are actively involved in the development of people with disabilities. Their identity is constructed on the basis of new social roles that involve engaging in activities aimed at changing the position of persons with disabilities in society. The main aim of the article is to show how active people working for the environment of people with disabilities develop positive identities based on the affirmation of diversity, and to what extent they still perceive disability as a stigma, causing the exclusion of persons with disabilities from society. The study was based on narrative interviews with people actively working for the environment of people with disabilities to see what their identity orientation is.

The accessibility of tourism space is becoming an increasingly significant issue in geographical research due to, amongst other things, demographic changes (an ageing population, growing numbers of people with disabilities) alongside guaranteeing a universal right of access to tourism. The nature of geographical research (physical, socio-economic) allows this issue to be viewed systemically. Drawing on the fields of geography and accessible tourism, this article presents the assumptions of a model which makes a systemic analysis of the factors conditioning the accessibility of tourism space possible. It also highlights the need for further research into the optimal level of detail in universal design principles which can be applied in tourism.

In the following article, the author presents an analysis of meanings projected onto intellectual disabilities by the internet users by referring to the cultural model of disability, the theory of social constructivism, as well as, to the post-structuralist discourse theories. In accordance with the cultural model of disability theory, the author perceives intellectual disability as generated by social practices, and as a “product” of discourse. A discourse perceived as a “system of statements” and as a practice that shapes the subjects which it speaks of. From this perspective, intellectual disability is perceived as a phenomenon created by its continuing interpretations. By applying the critical discourse analysis, the article presents an answer tok users? The presented means of comprehending and perceiving intellectual disability, its revealed meanings included in the internet discourse dthe question: how is intellectual disability defined and interpreted within the internet discourse, what meanings are projected onto intellectual disability by the networetermine the current assortment of practices regarding how society responds to otherness.

The social model of disability, the requirement for the subjective treatment of participants in social research and the availability of research subjects to the research process, resulting from the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, put researchers before the need to seek new research strategies that grasp the world of meanings of the respondents. The model of participatory research, which seems also appropriate for capturing the intersectionality of the gender and disability, seems to meet these challenges.

DOI: 10.14746/kse.2019.16.1 The aim of the article is to present a critical analysis of the social model of disability.In the first part, the author discusses the genesis, essence and basic advantages of the social model of disability. Next, five major disadvantages of this model are analysed:/1/ avoiding dealing with impairment as an important aspect of the lives of people with disabilities, /2/ separating impairment from disability, /3/ assuming that all people with disabilities are exposed to social oppression, /4/ postulating the creation of an environment without barriers and /5/ assuming that disability is the basis of the identity of people affected by it. In the final part of the article, the author presents reflections on the possibility of creating a new, more holistic model of disability.

In the first part of article the author presents the origins and basic tenets of the social model of disability emphasizing its key elements: the distinction between impairment and disability and the phenomenon of social oppression. Next, he describe the benefits of the social model. In the remainder of this article, the author analyze the main weaknesses of the social model of disability. The paper concludes with some reflections on the need to change in understanding of disability.

Opis:
The purpose of the paper is to analyse the folk understanding of physical and mental illness in Polish and Italian proverbs. The analysis shows that this is not a uniform picture, and that acceptance of disease and itstreatment have had several dimensions in the world of premonitions, superstitions and religion, and the physician treating a disease is just one and not the most important component in the process of recovery. The image of the disease in Italian proverbs seems to be similar to Polish proverbs, though not identical. It is extremely interesting that a part of the folk world connected with diseases and the fight against them has survived in modern Polish and standard Italian languages.

The aim of this article is to propose a new conceptual tool and an inspiration for sociological analysis of disability as an alternative to the predominant social model. It first discusses the social model and argues that in spite of its numerous merits it may be regarded as a manifestation of sociological reductionism of the actual complexity of disability. The notions of representation and translation are then contrasted, the former being the core of the social constructionist accounts and the latter being deeply rooted in a post‑constructivist perspective of actor‑network theory. Next, examples of translation, related to data visualization, disability simulation technologies and disability certification schemas are presented and discussed, emphasizing the action possibilities they enable by this impacting both the situation of people with disabilities and policy‑making processes. Finally, it is argued that sociology could engage in not only the examination but also the development of translational tools, which could be an important and welcome contribution of the discipline to disability policies.

W artykule poruszone zostały kwestie polityki społecznej w kontekście niepełnosprawności i wsparcia udzielanego osobom niepełnosprawnym. W pierwszej części zestawiono opisy pojęcia polityka społeczna w języku naukowym, polskim, jak i światowym. Następnie przedstawiono odniesienia do tego terminu w dokumentach europejskich oraz polskim ustawodawstwie. Kontekst teoretyczny artykułu stanowią głównie krytyczno-afirmatywne podejście do polityki społecznej (Ryszard Szarfenberg) oraz evidendenced-based policy (Ray Pawson), a także społeczny i oparty na prawach obywatelskich model niepełnosprawności. Autorzy analizują, jak akademicka dyskusja na temat niepełnosprawności i obecne w niej modele teoretyczne przekładają się na filozofię funkcjonowania systemu wsparcia wobec niepełnosprawnych w Polsce, formę jego ustawowego uregulowania i konkretne działania w jego ramach. Realne funkcjonowanie tego obszaru polityki społecznej przedstawiono wykorzystując dane zastane i case study czterech projektów na rzecz wsparcia osób z niepełnosprawnościami (zrealizowanych przez organizacje pozarządowe w Małopolsce).
In the article the question of social policy is discussed in the context of disability and support of disabled persons. The first part contains an overview of the ways in which the concept of social policy is defined in scientific language in Poland and abroad. Next, references to this term are presented in EU legal documents and in Polish legislation. Theoretical context of the article are the critical-affirmative approach to social policy (Ryszard Szarfenberg) and evidendenced-based policy (Ray Pawson), as well as social and civic rights-based model of disability. The authors analyze how the academic debate regarding disability and the theoretical models represented therein transpire into the philosophy of system of supporting the disabled in Poland, the forms of its legislative regulations and particular actions within its framework. Real operations of this sphere of social policy were presented based on ready data and case studies of four projects supporting disabled persons, conducted by non-governmental organizations in Małopolska.

The article attempts to define social work as a social practice, using the sociological understanding of practices as (1) habit and (2) disposition to register what is new. Such a theoretical perspective helped to reveal the causes of failure in implementing appropriate and effective assistance for parents with disabilities as a result of interference of several connected factors. Three such factors are discussed: institutionalization of helplessness in social assistance, relying on the stereotype of a disabled person (which corresponds to the medical model) and organizational ignorance. Finally, the necessity of introducing ground breaking innovations axiologically based on tolerance as an expression of social concern is emphasized.

The author’s aim is to support the hypothesis that what is considered the norm (normal, normality) is of fundamental importance in shaping the biomedical and social model of disability. The content of that norm largely determines whether an individual in society will be classified as a person with or without a disability. All norms concerning health and functioning have their source in axiological considerations of set ideas about the human body and society. In this sense, the norms do not reflect the entire phenomenon of disability, which they standardize. At most they reflect how it is treated by social institutions (the authorities) in a given time and place and what consequences this has for the development of the individual with a disability (the problem of emancipation). The theoretical basis for these thoughts is the philosophical perspective proposed by Georges Canguilhem, Jürgen Habermas, and Michel Foucault.

Beginning from the position of disability understood as a social and cultural construct, this paper aims to analyze and compare representations of disability in fairy tales by such authors as the Grimm brothers, Hans Christian Andersen, Oscar Wilde, Charles Perrault, Giovanni Francesco Straparola, and Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont. Despite the prevalence of disabled characters in many fairy tales, there exists just a handful of articles on disability in fairy tales within the field of disability studies (Schmiesing 2014). Therefore, this study attempts to fill in a knowledge gap in the area of disability studies by looking at disability and characters with disabilities in fairy tales from the perspective of the social model of disability. In this paper I seek to explore variations in the way different authors describe disability/sickness/deformity and to discuss such subjects related to the area of disability studies as overcoming disability and the question of cure (understood, in the context of fairy tales, as a supernatural restoration to the able-bodied state). In addition, I attempt to see if there exist any differences in how sick/disabled/deformed fairy tales characters are portrayed depending on their gender.

Powołując się na wprowadzoną przez Wrighta Millsa kategorię wyobraźni socjologicznej autorki stawiają pytanie o obecność studiów nad niepełnosprawnością w socjologii. Przedstawienie teoretycznych modeli niepełnosprawności w naukach społecznych staje się punktem wyjścia rozważań metodologicznych, związanych z prowadzeniem badań wyznaczonych przez społeczny model niepełnosprawności. Refleksji poddano zarówno założenia, jak i praktykę prezentowanych badań jakościowych, dotyczących genderowego wymiaru niepełnosprawności. Są one analizowane w aspekcie komplementarności wymiarów badawczego i emancypacyjnego oraz jako splot perspektyw indywidualnych, strukturalnych i obywatelskich. Autorki, lokując swoje badania w perspektywie metodologii feministycznej i socjologii zaangażowanej, podkreślają: ich procesualny i wzmacniający charakter, przełamanie tradycyjnych relacji badacz/ka – osoba badana, unikanie narzucania siatki pojęciowej badaczki i uznanie kompetencji uczestniczek badań, jak również konieczność zapewnienia pełnej dostępności jako warunku podmiotowego traktowania uczestniczek.
Referring to the concept of sociological imagination introduced by Charles Wright Mills, the authors reflect on the place of disability studies in sociology. Presenting theoretical models of disability in social sciences becomes a starting point for a discussion of methodological insights concerning research based on the social model of disability. They are analyzed both from the point of view of complementarity between research and emancipatory dimension and as a combination of individual, structural and civic perspectives. The authors situate their research in the perspective of feminist methodology and public sociology. They stress its process aspect and empowering effects as well as the resulting breach of traditional relationship between the researcher and the subject. They also discuss the avoidance of imposing the researcher’s conceptual network and recognition of the participants’ competences as well as the necessity to provide for as full an accessibility as possible as a condition of subjective approach to the participants of research.

In the light of the contemporary biopsychosocial model of disability, social exclusion is not an individual problem of the individual, but the situation significantly altering the functioning of the entire family system. Disability can be a cause of social exclusion for both the persons with disability and their families. Therefore, it is important to look for effective (formal and informal, institutional and non-institutional) ways to support families with disabled persons particularly in those activities that enhance the quality of life of families affected by disability. The purpose of this article is to show the importance of social support and examples of good practice that prevent social exclusion of both the persons with disabilities and their careers.
W świetle współczesnego biopsychospołecznego modelu niepełnosprawności wykluczenie społeczne nie jest indywidualnym problemem jednostek lecz sytuacją, która w dużym stopniu wpływa na funkcjonowanie całego systemu rodzinnego. Niepełnosprawność bywa przyczyną wykluczenia społecznego zarówno w odniesieniu do samych osób niepełnosprawnych, jak i dla ich rodzin. Dlatego ważne jest znalezienie skutecznych (formalnych i nieformalnych a także nie-instytucjonalnych) sposobów wsparcia rodzin osób niepełnosprawnych, w szczególności w odniesieniu do działań, które podnoszą jakość życia rodzin dotkniętych niepełnosprawnością. Celem tego artykułu jest wskazanie dużego znaczenia wsparcia społecznego oraz przykładów dobrych praktyk, które zapobiegają wykluczeniu społecznemu zarówno osób niepełnosprawnych jak i ich dróg kariery.

The present article undertakes an attempt to present the contemporary concept of intellectual disability in the context of the social model of disability. Attention was focused on the definition of intellectual disability, its assumptions and the basic dimensions of the functioning of people with intellectual disability. In addition, it was attempted to assess their compatibility with the postulates included in the social model of disability. As a result of the analysis, it was established that placing a stronger emphasis in the concept of intellectual disability on the interrelations between how it is perceived and who a person with intellectual disability becomes would promote stressing the role of the social environment in their development, in addition to encouraging the support and strengthening the tendency to perceive intellectual disability in the socio-educational dimension.
W artykule podjęto próbę prezentacji współczesnej koncepcji niepełnosprawności intelektualnej w kontekście społecznego modelu niepełnosprawności. Zwrócono uwagę na definicję niepełnosprawności intelektualnej, jej założenia oraz podstawowe wymiary funkcjonowania osób z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną, a także starano się ocenić ich zgodność z postulatami zawartymi w społecznym modelu niepełnosprawności. W rezultacie przeprowadzonej analizy stwierdzono, iż położenie większego nacisku w koncepcji niepełnosprawności intelektualnej na współzależność między tym, jak jest postrzegana, i tym, kim staje się osoba z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną, sprzyjałoby w większym zakresie podkreśleniu roli otoczenia społecznego w jej rozwoju, a także zachęcało do udzielania wsparcia i utrwalało tendencje do postrzegania niepełnosprawności intelektualnej w wymiarze socjopedagogicznym.
