Opis:
Sometimes you may judge the book by its cover. Those familiar with the works of Guglielmo Meardi know very well that his name as the author usually signals a controversial, if not a provocative content. Italian-born Meardi, who currently is the Head of prestigious Industrial Relations Research Unit at the Warwick Business School, has been covering developments in the field of work and employment relations in Europe for more than two decades, paying special attention to transformations of that field in the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). He pioneered field research in the Polish a# liates of multinational corporations. In $%%$ Meardi stepped forward with a thesis that fuzziness, disorganization and hybridity of Polish industrial relations make our country look like an ‘American Trojan horse (Meardi 2002), posing a threat to the foundations of European Social Model. Ten years later the Author does not hesitate to formulate even more acute diagnosis, writing openly about EU’s lack of capability to maintain the social dimension of European integration after the 2004-2007 enlargement. In his book Meardi claims that the accession of post-communist countries to the EU produced a convenient excuse for undermining the idea of the intrinsic nature of work as a value, which should not be assessed only from a market perspective, as either profitable or not. What happened in the New Member States (NMS) from the CEE after the accession, serves as the evidence.

Opis:
Social dialogue in post-1989 Poland has followed a long and curvy road. Introduction of tripartism, establishment of social dialogue institutions and conclusion of the 'Pact on the Transformation of State Enterprise' in 1993 propelled high hopes and expectations towards the domestic mutation of neocorporatism. In the following years, however, social dialogue in Poland would not produce another social pact, despite the fact that tripartite institutions have been working on regular basis and number of minor agreements have been consensually reached. The overall reception of Polish social dialogue both locally and internationally has been mixed with negative opinions prevailing. The article aims to show that such dismissive views are oversimplified by providing an account of obstacles, functions, chances and achievements social dialogue has had in Poland in comparison to western countries that did sign social pacts.

Opis:
Within several centuries the family model has been considerably transformed. After radical social changes different types of families arose. One of them is a dysfunctional family which is known for not meeting their children's basic needs. Many external factors contribute to dysfunctionality of a family. One of them is the phenomenon of physical or psychical violence. Others are: alcoholism, poverty, negative parental attitudes which affect negatively on child's personality.

In this article I discuss the question: „What is mathematics really all about?” How mathematics is viewed is significant on many levels, especially in education and society. For many years, sociologists of mathematics education, have stressed that mathematics acts as a gatekeeper: mathematics more than any other subject, has been cast in the role as an ,,objective” judge. The main purpose of this article is to conjoin several sets of problems such as the mathematical underparticipation of women and ethnic minorities , the sense of cultural alienation from mathematics felt by many social groups, mathematics in the process of transmission of social and political values, its role in the unequal distribution of power and the social nature of mathematics as a discipline.

Professor Tadeusz Kowalik (1926-2012) was the most outstanding Polish economist of social-democratic convictions in the post-1989 period. In the very first issue of WFES [vol. 1, no 1 (1)] we published his significant paper pertaining to the relation between economy and sociology (Is Cooperation of Sociologists and Economists Possible and if so When?). In the preface to the previous issue [vol. 3, no 1 (5)] we announced an article containing a synthetic presentation of Professor Kowaliks most essential views on political economy featured in selected works published in his final years. In this issue of WFES we hold our word and deliver the article as promised.

The “memory” misinformation effect may not be caused by memory failures: Exploring memory states of misinformed subjects

Opis:
In experiments concerning the misinformation effect, participants first watch some original material, e.g. a video clip, and read a description that in the experimental group contains information inconsistent with the video clip. Afterwards, all participants answer questions about the video. Typically, the misled group more often reports erroneous misleading information than the non-misled one.Theoretical explanations of this effect are usually formulated in terms of the cognitive theories of memory. This article presents three experiments that demonstrate that the misinformation effect can occur even if the memory of the original and postevent materials is correct. In the experiments, after watching a video clip, reading a narrative about it, and answering questions about the video, the participants were debriefed and required to indicate questions in which they noticed differences between the video and the narrative, as well as provide answers about the original and postevent materials. A substantial number of the participants yielded to the misinformation effect in the memory test even though they had correct memory about the original (and postevent) materials. The discussion emphasizes the need of the social influence framework to explain these results. Key message: the misinformation effect is important for applied forensic eyewitness psychology. To get a better understanding of this effect, there is a need to study it not only in terms of the cognitive psychology of memory, but also from the perspective of social psychology, because in many cases witnesses give wrong answers even when remembering the correct information.
