Artykuł omawia projekty realizowane przez Ośrodek KARTA, mające na celu udostępnianie materiałów archiwalnych w Internecie: Bibliotekę Cyfrową Ośrodka KARTA, Bibliotekę Cyfrową sieci Cyfrowych Archiwów Tradycji Lokalnej i Bibliotekę Cyfrową Międzynarodowego Archiwum Białoruskiego. Opis każdego projektu zawiera jego genezę, informacje dotyczące realizacji, tj. dane liczbowe określające wielkość zasobu biblioteki cyfrowej, jej zawartość merytoryczną, plany dalszego rozwoju. Ponadto zostały omówione trudności, jakie napotyka Ośrodek KARTA w trakcie prowadzonych projektów oraz problemy, z którymi stykają się użytkownicy bibliotek cyfrowych.
The article presents three projects which are focused on dissemination of archival material via Internet: Digital Library of the KARTA Center, Digital Library of the Digital Archive of Local Tradition, and Digital Library of the International Belarusian Archive, which are run by the KARTA Centre. Description of each project consists of its genesis and the information concerning realization procedures, such as the size of the digital collection, its subject content, and plans for future development. Moreover, the problems faced by the KARTA Centre during the project realization and difficulties experienced by the users are discussed in detail.

The objective of the article is a preliminary attempt to view contemporary forms of recording and documenting the memory of urban space, i.e. urban digital social archives. These undertakings, fitting into the current research trend on urban dis- course, deserve a discursive description with a focus on the subjective, ideational and interactive plane. The author chose only a small fragment from this extensive research field. She looks at the “memory map of the city” recorded in the form of a social archive. She is interested in which elements (objects) places its inhabitants use to build such a map, and what determines their choices in the context of axi- ological preferences.

This text is devoted to the Political Parties Archive [Archiwum Partii Politycznych; http://archiwumpartiipolitycznych.pl] in the Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The archive has been in operation since 1993 and is presently undergoing reorganization, which chiefly consists in digitalization. The author presents the idea behind the archive, its history, the classification of its resources, and above all, the information that can be found in it. The collected materials (printed, visual, online) provide information not only about the political parties currently operating in Poland (program documents, election campaigns, participation in social and political life) but also information on the period of systemic transformation and the formation of the democratic system from its beginnings, when opposition political circles in the Polish People’s Republic were working on plans for the future. The author emphasizes that the main characteristic of the archive is the activeness of its operators in obtaining materials (through queries to parties and state institutions, interviews with politicians, and monitoring election campaigns, including the archivization of audio-visual materials). The aim is to understand the mechanisms of political life. The Archive is supposed to have an educational function and by making its information accessible it should increase the transparency of political life.

This article describes the emergence and specific characteristics of the largest social archive in Poland, the KARTA Center Archive of the KARTA Center Foundation [Archiwum Ośrodka KARTA; https://karta.org.pl/archiwa], a Polish non-governmental public benefit organization. The archive contains important source material relating to recent Polish history, including documentation of the fate of Polish citizens under Soviet occupation and in the USSR, and the history of the activities of independent groups in the Polish People’s Republic. In the course of its 37 years of operation, over a dozen thousand people have donated their own collections to the KARTA Center. Such gifts have included the personal collections of such significant figures of the anti-regime opposition as Jerzy Jedlicki, Stefan Kisielewski, Jacek Kuroń, Jan Józef Lipski, Zdzisław Najder, and many others.The archive also contains the “Twenty-One Demands-Birth of the Solidarity Trade Union” collection, which has documentation from the years 1980–1981 and was entered in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register in 2003. The KARTA Center Library, which currently contains the largest collection of independent Polish publications from the 1970s and 1980s, has been granted the status of an academic library

The Józef Burszta Digital Archive [Cyfrowe Archiwum im. Józefa Burszty; http://cyfrowearchiwum.amu.edu.pl] is an online platform established in 2014 for publication of audiovisual materials collected since the 1950s by the Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.The Józef Burszta Digital Archive functions on the basis of Creative Commons licenses and has the status of a social archive. There are broad applications for its resources both in academe and beyond. The author discusses the bases for founding the archive, the specifics of its accessible materials, and plans for its future activities.

This text concerns work connected with the organization of the Oral History Archive of Cieszyn Silesia [Archiwum Historii Mówionej Śląska Cieszyńskiego], an initiative combining academic research interests with the activism of the non-governmental sector. The archivization projects showcase the culture of Cieszyn Silesia on both sides of the national border dividing the region; they highlight the cultural pluralism of the past and the multi-faith nature of contemporary times. They also value women’s voices. The methodology of the projects consists in filming narrative interviews addressing important issues agreed upon by the research collective. Two films of oral history were produced on the basis of the material acquired. This article concerns the archival enterprise at the Grodzka Gate-NN Theater Center in Lublin [Ośrodek „Brama Grodzka - Teatr NN”; http://teatrnn.pl] and those aspects of its operation that are connected with the artistic processing of the idea of an archive as a “memory ark.” The author discusses key elements of the archive’s form and function in connection with the Center’s social and educational activities, showing their relation to questions of cultural memory, memory as responsibility, the social dimension of memory, and ethical and artistic aspects of remembering (especially the remembrance and non-remembrance of victims of the Shoah).The article also reviews those works of the Center in which the form and function of the archive are translated into various realizations of “memory theater” (including “behind-the-scenes theater” inspired by the form of the archive, mysteries of memory, the expanded digital archive and its network infrastructure oriented on “memory work”, etc.)

The article summarises the discussions about defining a social archive, describes the organisations that maintain such archives, and their collections. Social archives are distinguished by their activities, which are addressed to the local community — and the article describes the scope of these activities. The article concludes with reflections on the perspectives of social archives.

Records of doctoral proceedings of the Faculty of Historical and Social Studies contained in the archive of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University include not only the opened and completed doctoral proceedings of the faculty but also the records of recognition of doctoral degrees granted by foreign academic institutions. There are in total 89 archived units. There are supplemented by doctoral proceedings, which were opened but not completed for a variety of reasons - 6 units. Together they span the years 1973 to 1999. The complete documentation can be seen in Table 1. The records hare been filed according to their signatures following the rearrangement and cataloguing of the archive. They are therefore filed chronologically. The Table shows the main elements of the doctoral proceedings: - the signed records, - doctorant’s name, - thesis title, - number of pages in each volume of the thesis, - the discipline in which the doctorate was awarded, - the supervisor’s name, - the names of the reviewers, - commencement of the proceedings, - the date of the examination, - the date of the Faculty Board’s decision to award the degree, - the date and number of the doctoral certificate. The information in this article is primarily intended for those researching the history and studies carried out in the faculty.

During the 1960s, the Archaeological Survey of Sudanese Nubia (ASSN) created a systematic record of the archaeology of a whole landscape, now lost, providing a body of data of exceptional value. Drawing on still unpublished data this paper explores the medieval settlement archaeology of the Duweishat region of the central Batn al-Hajar. Evidence is examined for a gradual agricultural colonisation during the first millennium AD as well as the penetration of Christianity into this isolated rural area. How social landscapes may have been organised around churches and cemeteries is also discussed, as well as how such regions may have interacted with (episcopal) centres such as Sai and Faras.

The popularity of Jerzy Lewczyński (1924-2014) coincided with the academic interest in the problem of archive, corresponding to Lewczyński’s program of the “archeology of photography,” developed in the 1970s. Lewczyński’s idea consisted in restoring Kantor’s “reality of the lowest rank,” i.e. the rejected microhistories hidden in the anonymous and the forgotten or taken out of an ashtray at the Warsaw Central train station. Today, however, one tends to forget that Lewczyński’s gesture of artistic legitimization did not aim at giving new meanings, but above all at blurring the boundary between everyday items and those which emerged from some kind of “aesthetic situation” (Maria Gołaszewska). This aspect of his art can be seen, e. g, in his visual journal, where the artist included objects of particular importance – next to Xerox copies of his own works or works of other artists, he placed also shopping receipts. Lewczyński equaled the value of cheap receipt paper with the noble velvety quality of bromine. He did not reduce his collected items to their aesthetic function, having rejected the institutionalized idea of the artifact as a work of art to enjoy by the audience. Anticipating the postulates of Bruno Latour, instead of showing objects appropriated by the power of the gaze, he presented actors: things that asked questions on their own.

The importance of consolidated information resources development for social data institutions at the level of towns and establishments with a view to their further integration into national information resource is substantiated. “Smart city” projects portfolio is a new innovative model of the city, region and country development. A considerable part of the world cities and towns use the current innovation for project implementation providing their development with application of intellectual digital information – telecommunication networks and technologies. “Smart city” project implementation is encouraged by the world developed countries in order to rise living standards and economic growth of regions and cities. “Smart city” consolidated information recourse development is based on the application of modern information and communication technologies, tools design and operation algorithms and ways of polymodal information presentation and processing.

The article focuses on the attestations of clergy in the Oxyrhynchite archive of the Apion estate. In this group of texts, clerics feature in various roles such as administrators, cultivators, and legal specialists. A close reading of these documents within the context of normative sources and testimonies from outside the Apion archive allows us to come closer to an understanding of the clergy as a socially and economically diverse group poised to play intermediary roles in the networks of a great estate. The various aspects of the profiles of clerics recorded in the texts (wealth, education, skills, place of origin) encourage us to envisage the clerical status as an intersectional experience where symbolic-religious and socio-economic factors remained in constant interplay.

This article was written on the basis of the project ‘See Culture: The Archive of Visual Materials from Research into Culture in Poland’ conducted in 2014. It speaks of the internet creation of a social database using visual materials—the Visual Archive (archiwumwizualne.pl). The authors present their findings from interviews with members of the research teams and directors of the projects that were included in the internet archive. These primarily concern the various approaches and research practices of the interlocutors and their definitions of visual material’s potential as a tool in social research. The profiles of the researchers presented earlier is then compared to the category of the practice-oriented intellectual, which broadens the classical understanding of the intellectual and points to an emerging manner of thinking about research practice in contemporary social sciences. The usefulness of the Visual Archive for the practice-oriented intellectual is indicated.
