Opis:
Sleep is a very important aspect of human life, as it is responsible for regulation of the circadian cycle, body regeneration and reduction of harmful metabolites. Sleep deprivation can be associated with chronic stress, which can have an extremely negative impact on bodily function. The presented study covered 220 students of medical faculties; their correlations between the sleep quality and the level of perceived stress were analyzed. Sleep quality was measured using the PSQI (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), and perceived stress was measured using PSS-10 (10-Item Perceived Stress Scale). A high correlation was shown between the PSQI and PSS-10 results (rs = 0.60), which means that people who were characterized by a low sleep quality also showed a high level of perceived stress. Among the PSQI components that were the most correlated with PSS-10, can be counted in such components as C1 (subjective sleep quality, rs = 0.50), C2 (sleep latency,  rs = 0.51), and C7 (daytime dysfunctions, rs = 0.52). Mobile phone usage at bedtime has also been demonstrated to correlate with poor sleep quality. The study shows a significant relationship between sleep quality and the level of perceived stress, which has also been shown in other studies.

Introduction and aim. Given the potential relationship between oxidative stress and fibromyalgia and well-documented antioxidant efficacy of zinc, the present study aimed to determine serum zinc concentration in FM patients as compared to healthy controls, as well as to identify the correlation of serum zinc concentration with the body mass index (BMI) and sleep quality. Material and methods. In this case-control study, 54 fibromyalgia patients were consecutively recruited between October 01, 2021 and December 01, 2021. The control group consisted of 54 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Results. Fibromyalgia group had significantly lower zinc concentration, higher body mass index, and lower sleep quality scores as compared to the healthy control group. The correlation analysis revealed a significantly negative correlation between serum zinc concentration and body mass index and a significantly positive correlation between serum zinc concentration and sleep quality both in fibromyalgia and healthy control groups. Conclusion. Our results both support the hypothesis that low serum zinc concentration plays a role in the pathophysiology of fibromyalgia and indicate that fibromyalgia may lead to weight gain and poor sleep quality, which needs to be confirmed in large-cohort studies.

Opis:
INTRODUCTION: : Sleep is vital for physical, psychological, emotional, and cognitive well-being. Cancer becomes life-threatening once it affects major organs and their ability to function. Sleep disturbance is one of the most common complaints in patients with cancer which interferes with the symptom burden, coping ability, and treatment effectiveness. Current study aimed to assess sleep quality and its associated factors among critically ill cancer patients who were admitted to the Apeksha Hospital, Sri Lanka. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 384 patients with cancer, who were admitted to Apeksha Hospital. Pretested interviewer-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Sleep quality was classified as good (Global PSQI score ≤5) and poor (Global PSQI score >5). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and associations between categorical variables were assessed by performing a Chi-square test. IBM SPSS Version 26 was used as the analytical tool. RESULTS: Of 384 patients with cancer, 58.9% (n=226) were females. Most of the patients (78.4%, n=301) were adults (25-64 years), and 63.0% (n=242) were married. Breast cancers (20.1%), blood cancers (19.3%), and ovarian cancers [13.8%) were the most common cancers reported by the study participants. The mean Global PSQI score was 10.27±3.48 (range 3-20) and 95.3% of the participants were categorized as having poor sleep quality. Age (p=0.002), income (p=0.050), engaging in leisure time activities (p=0.036), social media use (p=0.022), and fatigue (p=0.012), and level of pain (p<0.001) were significantly associated with the sleep quality of patients with cancer. CONCLUSIONS: Poor sleep quality is highly prevalent among patients with cancer and evidence-based interventions should be implemented to improve sleep quality.

Objectives This study’s objective was to examine association between sleep duration and sleep quality, and metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components in Taiwanese male police officers. Material and Methods Male police officers who underwent annual health examinations were invited to join the study and eventually a total of 796 subjects was included in it. The study subjects were divided into 5 groups according to the length (duration) of sleep: < 5, 5–5.9, 6–6.9, 7–7.9 and ≥ 8 h per day, and the global Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to categorize their sleep quality as good or poor. To analyze the association between sleep problems and MetS, adjusted odds ratio and respective 95% confidence intervals (CI) were computed. Results The prevalence of MetS in Taiwanese male police officers was 24.5%. Abdominal obesity had the highest proportion (36.2%) among 5 components of MetS. More than 1/2 of the police officers (52.3%) had poor sleep quality. Police officers with higher scores of sleep disturbances had a higher prevalence of MetS (p = 0.029) and abdominal obesity (p = 0.009). After adjusting for age, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, smoking status, alcohol drinking habit, physical habitual exercise, snoring and type of shift work, the police officers who slept less than 5 h were 88% more likely to suffer from abdominal obesity than those who slept 7–7.9 h (95% CI: 1.01–3.5). Sleep quality was not associated with MetS and its components. Conclusions The police officers who slept less than 5 h were more likely to experience abdominal obesity in Taiwan, and those with higher scores of sleep disturbances had a higher prevalence of MetS and abdominal obesity. It is recommended that police officers with short sleep duration or sleep disturbances be screened for MetS and waist circumference in order to prevent cardiovascular diseases.

Opis:
Maritime students spend a certain period of their training on board, depending on their qualifications. Deck officer candidates (deck cadets) must perform an open sea internship on commercial vessels for one year. Deck officers are among to member of crew with important responsibilities to cooperate with the Master during voyage including being involved in navigation and port watches as well as maintenance of the ship and its safety equipment. Deck cadets perform their practical training between academic education periods according to general practice in Turkey. They can be subjected to unusual working hours and rest periods during the mission on the ship. Considering the importance of adequate sleep for productivity, vigilance, sustaining attention and even over-all health and well-being, it is not only sleep quantity but sleep quality is critical. The aim of this study was to investigate of the effect of the long-term onboard training (aprox. 7 months) on the sleep quantity and quality of the maritime students. Data regarding sleep quantity and perceptive quality among the subjects were obtained by using Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). PSQI is a scale providing information on type and violence of sleep disorders and the quality of sleep during the past month. A total of 60 maritime students were asked to fill PSQI before and after onboard training. Demographical information such as age, gender, weight, height and information regarding the internship were also obtained. Of the students 43.3% rated as poor sleeper before the internship and this ratio increased to 73.3% after the internship. A prominent decrease in sleep quality was determined. Sleep duration did not change significantly. This study showed a significant negative effect of onboard training on sleep quality among participants and they did not recover within a month after returning from the sea which indicates potential long term consequencies.

INTRODUCTION: Adequate sleep protects the mental and physical health of individuals while boosting brain and body functions. Significant lifestyle changes due to COVID 19 can affect the sleep quality and level of stress among nurses. The aim of the study was to evaluate the association between sleep quality and perceived stress among nurses during this COVID 19 outbreak. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 292 registered nurses in Sri Lanka through an anonymous online survey. Data were collected using self-administered, structured questionnaire that included Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). SPSS 25 software (version 25) was used for data analysis. RESULTS: The majority (79.8%) were between 26-35 years and females (93.5%). Among all participants, the average hours of sleep per night was 5.50 (±1.07). The results of the PSQI scale revealed that 78.4 % of nurses had poor sleep quality (PSQI > 5points), while 67.1% of nurses had moderate level of perceived stress according to the PSS scale. Pearson’s coefficient correlation demonstrated that, as nurses’ sleep quality decreased, stress level of the nurses increased moderately (r=0.53). CONCLUSIONS: The majority of nurses had poor sleep quality and moderate stress. Furthermore, it showed that there is a moderate positive correlation (r=0.53) between the PSQI global score and the perceived stress scale score.

MATERIAŁ I METODY: Zbadano 223 księży diecezjalnych i zakonnych Archidiecezji Katowickiej. WNIOSKI: Księża niechętnie poddają się badaniu kwestionariuszowemu dotyczącemu stanu zdrowia psychicznego, jednocześnie stanowią grupę wysokiego ryzyka występowania zaburzeń snu i zaburzeń depresyjnych. Perfekcjonizm, nadmierne zaangażowanie, poczucie niezrozumienia, potrzeba uznania i wysoka wrażliwość interpersonalna sprzyjały nasileniu symptomów depresji w badanej grupie.
INTRODUCTION: Chronic stress affects sleep quality and causes symptoms of depression among professionally active people. Priesthood, due to its specificity, can generate chronic stress. The aim of the study was to analyse the occupational load among a group of Catholic priests, evaluate the sleep quality and the prevalence of depressive disorders as well as identify the factors affecting their occurrence among clergymen. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 223 diocesan and monastic priests of the Archdiocese of Katowice were examined. A proprietary, validated questionnaire, as well as the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) and the Sleep Quality Scale (SQS) were used in the study. RESULTS: The factors generating the most stress among the studied priests were relations with their superiors (68.2%) and the change of parish (66.8%). The most prevalent of the negative states felt subjectively throughout their priesthood was fatigue (92.4%). A degraded quality of sleep occurred in 20.2% of the researched priests, while depressive disorders of various severity were found in 27.4%. The intensity of stress related to changing the parish, relations with superiors, celibacy and living alone were found to influence the quality of sleep and depression. CONCLUSIONS: Priests are reluctant to submit to a questionnaire survey regarding the state of mental health, while being at high risk of sleep disorders and depressive disorders. The lower the sleep quality, the higher the indicators of depressive disorders. Perfectionism, overcommitment, a feeling of being misunderstood, a need for recognition and high interpersonal sensitivity were conducive to the intensification of symptoms of depression among the studied group.

INTRODUCTION: Impaired sleep quality is very common among pregnant women. Research shows that it has many negative consequences. The aim of the study was to assess the quality of sleep of pregnant women in each trimester in comparison to non-pregnant women. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 65 pregnant women and 67 women from a control group participated in an anonymous study. The criteria for inclusion were: 18–35 years of age, lack of recognized and treated mental and chronic disorders, not working in a shift/night shift system. For the study group the additional criterion was a normal pregnancy. The employed tools were: a questionnaire (demographic data, course of pregnancy), scales: Sleep Quality Scale, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, actigraphy. RESULTS: The pregnant women slept more than an hour longer than the control group, however, their sleep quality was worse and daytime sleepiness was more intense. Over 58% of the pregnant women noticed a reduction in their sleep quality compared to the pre-pregnancy state. The factors connected with low sleep quality were: sleep position, night calf cramps, the need to go to the toilet at night, stress, night awakening. CONCLUSIONS: Most pregnant women experience a reduction in sleep quality during pregnancy. In more than 43% of woman reduced quality of sleep was observed and almost 1/3 had a significant increase in daytime sleepiness. Considering the negative effects for both women and children, it would be advisable to pay attention to the problems of impaired sleep quality: education, early screening diagnostics and sleep hygiene. Such a holistic approach may help improve sleep quality in pregnant women.
Kryteriami włączenia były: 18–35 lat, brak rozpoznanych i leczonych chorób psychicznych, przewlekłych, brak pracy w systemie zmianowym/nocnym, a dla grupy badanej dodatkowo ciąża o przebiegu prawidłowym. U ponad 43% kobiet zaobserwowano obniżoną jakość snu, a u prawie 1/3 istotne nasilenie senności dziennej.

Objectives: To investigate associations between sexual intercourse and sleep quality and duration, controlling for a range of confounders, in a large, representative sample of older English adults. Methods: Data were from 2,743 men and 2,990 women aged ? 50 years, participating in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Participants reported whether or not they had engaged in sexual activity in the last year, and those who were sexually active reported frequency of intercourse in the past month. Information on sleep disturbance and duration and socio-demographic and health-related covariates was also collected. Findings: Being sexually active was not associated with sleep disturbance or sleep duration. Men who had less frequent intercourse reported greater sleep disturbance than those who reported no sexual intercourse (OR=1.29, 95% CI 1.02-1.65), but had lower odds of reporting longer than optimal sleep duration (OR=0.45, 95% CI 0.24-0.86). Men who engaged in sexual intercourse once a week or more (OR=0.43, 95% CI 0.23-0.80) also had lower odds of long sleep relative to those who reported no sexual intercourse. Women who engaged in more frequent (? once a week) intercourse reported less sleep disturbance than those who reported no sexual intercourse in the last month (OR=0.68, 95% CI 0.53-0.86), and women who reported sexual intercourse once in the past month had lower odds of long sleep (OR=0.51, 95% CI 0.26-0.996). Conclusions: In a population-based sample of older men and women in England, there was inconsistent evidence of an association between sexual activity and sleep disturbance and sleep duration.
