Opis:
Day after day it is being demonstrated that Greece hides a buried treasure in its forests. The wild black truffles Tuber aestivum, T. uncinatum, T. brumale and T. melanosporum and the white truffle T. borchii and recently T. magnatum are picked in a variety of forest ecosystems all over the country. The information which has been collected has initiated a national programme on truffle cultivation which, so far, has immense appeal, especially among young farmers. The discovery of carpophores of T. magnatum, the most valued white truffle in the market, triggered the interest in studying the site characteristics, botanical and pedological, in order to help farmers to cultivate the species in similar sites. All carpophores were found under hornbeam (Carpinus orientalis) along the banks of a creek on alluvial sediment. Soil analyses of four soil samples from truffle nests showed a narrow range of values of pH in water (7.57–7.78) and 1N KCL (6.94–7.07) and a similar granulometric soil texture.

Radioactive veins in shear zones of the El-Seboah granite in Egypt with anomalous concentrations of Nd, Ce, Zr, Y, Nb, Sm, Th and U were studied by petrographic microscopy, x-ray diffraction, 57Fe Mössbauer and wet chemical methods. The veins are composed essentially of quartz, aegirine-augite and minor K-feldspar ± α-iron oxide (hematite) ± γ-iron oxide hydroxide (goethite). They likely represent late-stage felsic melt that was quenched and devitrified at high temperature to yield crystals and crystallites, and then subjected to low temperature alteration during which most of the K feldspar transformed to kaolinite and opal. Mössbauer parameters of the samples indicate that the existing Fe-bearing minerals are primary, with appreciable ordering in the Fe sites. The bulk-sample iron (ΣFe) contents are extremely high (12.3-22.4%). The extent of oxidation of the Fe has been found to be 100% by Mössbauer spectroscopy and 95.36-99.69% by a chemical method. These conditions of Fe enrichment and strong oxidation suggest that the veins are extreme differentiates of granite magmas where high states of oxygen fugacity prevailed.

Patterned ground develops at three geographic site-types: convex uplands; concave mountain passes and cols; and valleyside slopes. Data were collected at each site to characterize the patterned ground morphometry. Morphometry was similar regardless of site-type, and occurrence was dependent on the presence of fine-grained material on older solifluction terraces or sorted nets.

The site preference of some transition metals during B2-type ordering has been investigated in the ternary Cu0.5 (Zn1-x Mx )0.5 alloys with M = Ti, V, Ag, Au, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta, W, Re or Pt (x ≤ 0.01). The statistic-o-thermodynamical theory combined with the electronic theory of alloys has been used to calculate the partial ordering energies, partial short range order parameters and the order-disorder transformation temperatures. The values of partial short range order parameters have been used to determine the site preference of the metal M. The analysis shows that the metals M can be divided into two groups with regard to lattice site occupancy. One group comprising of Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta, W, Re or Pt was found to prefer Zn sublattice sites, while the second group of Ti, V, Ag or Au atoms prefer Cu sublattice sites. It is found that order-disorder transformation temperature and the site preference of metal M both depend strongly on the partial ordering energies and ternary alloying addition of metal M.

Opis:
Mechanical site preparation is recommended to create optimum conditions for seed germination and seedling growth in a clear−cut area. Lack of soil scarification or less−intense methods may be more suitable from an environmental point of view, but can result in a failure to obtain natural regeneration. This study compared the effects of three mechanical site preparation methods (SPM) characterized by different levels of soil scarification (i.e. double mould−board forest plough (LPz), active plough (PA) or forest mill (FL)), as well as a control variant without mechanical site preparation, on height, density, spatial distribution and survival among naturally regenerating Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris L.) in the first 2 years of growth in a clear−cut area of NE Poland. The experiment was based around a four−block randomized block design involving the four variants. Seedling height was measured at the end of the first and second growing seasons, with measurements performed on 8 meter−wide transects extending across the entire width of the cleat−cut. We found no effect of SPM on seedling height, though the density of seedlings regenerating naturally was found to be dependent. After two years, the highest density was achieved in the PA variant (8.1 seedlings/m2) and the FL variant (7.0 seedlings/m2). A significantly lower density characterized the LPz variant (5.1 seedlings/m2) and the lowest of all the variant without soil scarification (3.2 seedlings/m2). The most homogeneous natural regeneration was achieved following the use of PA (2.6% of 1 m2 plots without seedlings after two growing seasons), while the least homogeneous was the variant without soil scarification (22.4% of 1 m2 plots). Survival of pines after the second growing seasons was quite high (over 80%), and did not differ significantly depending on the SPM. Our research therefore confirmed that, in the absence of mechanical site preparation, natural regeneration of sufficient density and homogeneity cannot be obtained. The best natural regeneration was obtained on sites prepared with PA, and FL scarification being only slightly less favorable. The low density and uneven distribution of seedlings on the soil prepared with LPz was a surprising result. The probable reason for this lay in the high precipitation in the first growing season. On one hand, this provided very good moisture conditions for seed germination and seedling growth on a substrate with high porosity in the PA and FL variants, but on the other the high bulk density of mineral soil in the LPz variant led to oxygen deficit.

Opis:
Recently, Norway spruce stands in Beskid ¯ywiecki (Western Carpathians) have been plagued by bark beetle outbreak affecting an extensive area over a large range of altitudes. Georeferenced data (2356 records) from 2009–2011 of the volume of felled spruces showing insect infestation in forest sub-compartments were analysed with respect to selected site and stand characteristics. The infestation intensity varied between individual parts of the examined area. Spruce mortality, recorded evenly across all slope expositions, was higher in the zones 800 m – 1000 m and above 1000 m than in the zone below 800 m. The infestation intensity increased slightly with spruce representation in the stands and was higher in stands older than 80 years. There was no clear correlation between spruce mortality and site quality. However, in areas with more diverse and fertile sites mortality was lower. In overall, the results obtained in this study are in line with previous knowledge on the subject, but patterns describing bark beetle preferences in infested areas appear to be less pronounced than those found in earlier publications. Risk assessment and current planning of forest protection measures in stands affected by bark beetle outbreaks should be based on the here described characteristics of spruce susceptibility to insect infection.

The microbiological research on the area of the palaeontological site in Starunia (Ukraine) reveals the details of biological activity of the near-surface layers and Quaternary sediments. In Starunia area remnants of a mammoth and three woolly rhinoceroses, and one almost completely preserved rhinoceros carcass were found in 1907 and 1929. The gained quantitative results regarding the occurrence of different physiological groups of microorganisms show that their number varied significantly depending on the sampling place, sampling depth, pH, humidity and the organic matter content. The amount and differentiation of the tested groups of microorganisms typically decreased with the depth. In several deep-sampling locations there was increase in the microorganisms, especially with methanogens and methanotrophs. The metanogens occurred mainly in Pleistocene sediments, comprised of clayey mud and peat, while saprophytic microorganisms (bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes) occur in Holocene sediments comprised of clayey mud, peat and peat mud. The quantity of microorganisms in selected boreholes was related to high concentration of the organic matter (mainly peat and peat mud) and correlated with methane occurrence.

From ancient to modern times, in the historical process of urban development, urban transportation has been developing along with the development of the city's political, economic and cultural industries, and the relationship between each other has always been a topic constantly discussed by planning scholars. The development of urban transportation promotes the urban population gathering and industrial development, and promotes the development of urban geographical space. At the same time, it also brings endless convenience to urban residents, so that they can complete the displacement from the beginning to the destination with relatively low cost. However, with the rapid development of urban scale and the rapid growth of urban population, the problems of traffic congestion and land resource shortage in big cities of China seriously restrict the improvement of the quality of life of residents and the further development of the city. In this context, compact city is the inevitable choice for future urban development, while the transportation system supporting compact city form can only be public transportation. As a high-volume, efficient and rapid public transport mode, rail transit can not only solve the traffic congestion problem in high-density areas of cities, but also optimize the development and utilization of urban land and adjust the urban spatial layout, which is of great significance for the sustainable development of cities. The network of rail transit in Beijing becomes the backbone of public passenger transport system, and play an irreplaceable role in guiding the urban space layout adjustment, population migration and the transformation of traffic structure. The study of travel characteristics of the residents who live along the rail transit, in-depth analysis the relationship of the rail transit, the population migration and commuter travel, it is of great significance providing decision support for urban planning. Based on binary choice model, establishing the residents' travel choice model, rail transit impact model of different crowds. Study the relationship between rail transit and residents' travel characteristics, predict the rail transit to guide the trend of population migration.

Opis:
The following study covers flint artefacts unearthed during the six seasons of archaeological excavations conducted by the Cracow Saltworks Museum in Wieliczka, at the multi-cultural site no. 8 in Zakrzów, Niepołomice municipality, county of Wieliczka. It is intended as the first stage of a wider analysis including the reminder of artefacts, characteristics of archaeological features, and structure of settlements in the microregion. The site was first discovered during surface work within the AZP 103- 58 rectangular area, conducted during 1983 by Antoni Jodłowski, Kazimierz Reguła and Adam Szybowicz2. The site is located at Wieliczka foothills [Pogórze Wielickie], on the south-eastern slopes of the Tropie Góry hills, rolling towards the Bogusława river – also known as the Zakrzówek stream. In the recent years, the area has been under continuous development due to robust expansion of residential areas as well as businesses opening along the national road no. 964. The undeveloped plot no. 495/2, neighbouring the road from the south, was selected for the archaeological work. Its longer axis points approximately towards the S-E direction. The excavations covered an area reaching 60 m in length and 15 m in width. In total, the area of 8 ares was explored, which resulted in the identification of over 100 features, mostly from the Neolithic period. Found underneath the humus layer were deposits with inclusions of historical materials, filling a ground depression between two local humps invisible from the surface. The bottom of the excavated ditch featured formations whose genesis is likely the result of aqueous environment. This allows us to suppose that there was at least a periodically active spring in this region. Further evidence supporting this hypothesis comes from the layout of identified archaeological features, whose placement avoids the likely area of the watercourse. The depression was probably filled gradually, as suggested by the depth-varying numbers and provenance of unearthed artefacts. The substrate consists of hard sandy clay formations, with multiple ferrous inclusions. A large percentage of the unearthed ceramics consists of so-called ‘sandy’ ceramics, which may suggest the spring being used as the source of brine, or perhaps simply of water used in the production of such vessels. This topic will be elaborated upon in the further stages of the study. The site is multi-cultural in its character. Only few among the archaeological finds can be attributed to the final stages of the Palaeolithic and the Mesolithic periods. The core of the finds consists of Neolithic artefacts, present both in the identified deposit strata and within the archaeological features. A small group of artefacts and features is attributable to the Linear Pottery Culture of the Zofipole stage (2nd half of the 6th millennium BCE), with much more numerous finds from the late stages of the Pleszów-Modlnica group (2nd half of the 5th millennium BCE) and the Wyciąże-Złotniki group (1st half of the 4th millennium BCE) of the Lengyel-Polgár circle. Also identified were various numbers of artefacts from the Lusatian Culture, Tyniec group, Przeworsk Culture, and materials dating from the Medieval period up until the modern times, including a rifleman’s strongpoint from 1914. Due to the particulars of the site stratigraphy, the majority of artefacts comes from a secondary fill, which robs them of some cultural and chronological contexts. Consequently, the main part of the analysis of flint material will be focusing on artefacts from anthropogenic features in which culturally homogeneous ceramics were found. The finds were associated with three horizons: Linear Pottery Culture, and Pleszów-Modlnica group and Wyciąże-Złotniki group of the Lengyel-Polgár circle (Table no. I).
