The paper presents the results of the crystallization process of silumin by the TDA thermographic method and the results of the cast microstructure obtained in the sampler TDA-10, that was cooling down in ambient air. The study was conducted for silumin AlSi11 unmodified. The work demonstrated that the use of thermal imaging camera allows for the measurement and recording the solidification process of silumin. Thermal curve was registered with the infrared camera and derivative curve that was calculated on the base of thermal curve have both a very similar shape to adequate them TDA curves obtained from measurements using a thermocouple. Test results by TDA thermographic method enable quantitative analysis of the kinetics of the cooling and solidification process of neareutectic silumin.

The work is a continuation of research concerning the influence of intensive cooling of permanent mold in order to increase the casting efficiency of aluminium alloys using the multipoint water mist cooling system. The paper presents results of investigation of crystallization process and microstructure of multicomponent synthetic hypereutectic alloy AlSi20CuNiCoMg. The study was conducted for unmodified silumin on the research station allowing the cooling of the special permanent sampler using a program of computer control. Furthermore the study used a thermal imaging camera to analyze the solidification process of multicomponent alloy. The study demonstrated that the use of mold cooled with water mist stream allows in wide range to form the microstructure of hypereutectic multicomponent silumin. It leads to higher homogeneity of microstructure and refinement of crystallizing phases of casting.

Opis:
By the method of modern physical material science (optic microscopy scanning and transmission electron microscopy) the analysis of structural phase states, the morphology of the second phase inclusions and defect substructure of Al-Si alloy (silumin) of hypoeutectic composition, subjected to electron beam processing was done with the following parameters: energy density 25-35 J/cm2, beam length 150 μs, pulse number – 3, pulse repetition rate – 0.3 Hz, pressure of residual gas (argon) 0.02 Pa. The surface irradiation results in the melting of the surface layer, the dissolution of boundary inclusions, the stricture formation of high speed cellular crystallization of submicron sizes, the repeated precipitation of the second phase nanodimentional particles. With the increased distance from the irradiation surface the layer containing the second phase inclusions of quasi-equilibrium shape along with the crystallization cells was revealed. It is indicative of the processes of Al-Si alloy structure globalization on electron beam processing.

The microstructure of an unmodified AlSi9Mg alloy comprises large primary α phase dendrites, eutectic β phase crystals and eutectic α phase. This composition is responsible for the alloy’s low strength parameters, and it limits the extent of practical applications. The mechanical properties of hypoeutectic silumins can be improved through chemical modification as well as traditional or technological processing. Modification improves the mechanical properties of alloys through grain refinement. This study presents the results of double modification of an AlSi9Mg alloy with strontium, boron and titanium. The influence of the analyzed modifiers on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the processed alloy was presented in graphs. The modification of a hypoeutectic AlSi9Mg alloy improved the alloy’s properties. The results of the tests indicate that the mechanical properties of the modified alloy are determined by the sequence in which the components are introduced to the alloy.
Mikrostruktura niemodyfikowanego stopu AlSi9Mg składa się z dużych dendrytów pierwotnej fazy α, eutektycznych kryształów fazy β i eutektycznej fazy α. Taki skład fazowy jest przyczyną niskiej wytrzymałości stopu, co ogranicza jego praktyczne zastosowanie w praktyce. Właściwości mechaniczne podeutektycznych siluminów można poprawić poddając stop modyfikacji chemicznej, jak również poprzez zastosowanie procesów technologicznych. Modyfikacja poprawia właściwości mechaniczne stopów poprzez rozdrabnianie ziarna. W pracy przedstawiono wyniki podwójnej modyfikacji stopu AlSi9Mg przy użyciu strontu, boru i tytanu. Wpływ badanych modyfikatorów na mikrostrukturę i właściwości mechaniczne obrabianego stopu przedstawiono na wykresach. Modyfikacja podeutektycznego stopu AlSi9Mg poprawiła jego właściwości. Wyniki badań wskazują, że właściwości mechaniczne modyfikowanego stopu zależą od kolejności, w jakiej składniki są wprowadzane do stopu.

Opis:
Dispersion hardening, as the main heat treatment of silumins having additions of copper and magnesium, results in considerable increase of tensile strength and hardness, with simultaneous decrease of ductility of the alloy. In the paper is presented an attempt of introduction of heat treatment operation consisting in homogenizing treatment prior operation of the dispersion hardening, to minimize negative effects of the T6 heat treatment on plastic properties of hypereutectoidal AlSi17CuNiMg alloy. Tests of the mechanical properties were performed on a test pieces poured in standardized metal moulds. Parameters of different variants of the heat treatment, i.e. temperature and time of soaking for individual operations were selected basing on the ATD (Thermal Derivation Analysis) diagram and analysis of literature. The homogenizing treatment significantly improves ductility of the alloy, resulting in a threefold increase of the elongation and more than fourfold increase of the impact strength in comparison with initial state of the alloy. Moreover, the hardness and the tensile strength (Rm) of the alloy decrease considerably. On the other hand, combination of the homogenizing and dispersion hardening enables increase of elongation with about 40%, and increase of the impact strength with about 25%, comparing with these values after the T6 treatment, maintaining high hardness and slight increase of the tensile strength, comparing with the alloy after the dispersion hardening.

Automation of machining operations, being result of mass volume production of components, imposes more restrictive requirements concerning mechanical properties of starting materials, inclusive of machinability mainly. In stage of preparation of material, the machinability is influenced by such factors as chemical composition, structure, mechanical properties, plastic working and heat treatment, as well as a factors present during machining operations, as machining type, cutting parameters, material and geometry of cutting tools, stiffness of the system: workpiece – machine tool – fixture and cutting tool. In the paper are presented investigations concerning machinability of the EN AC-AlSi9Cu3(Fe) silumin put to refining, modification and heat treatment. As the parameter to describe starting condition of the alloy was used its tensile strength Rm. Measurement of the machining properties of the investigated alloy was performed using a reboring method with measurement of cutting force, cutting torque and cutting power. It has been determined an effect of the starting condition of the alloy on its machining properties in terms of the cutting power, being indication of machinability of the investigated alloy. The best machining properties (minimal cutting power - Pc=48,3W) were obtained for the refined alloy, without heat treatment, for which the tensile strength Rm=250 MPa. The worst machinability (maximal cutting power Pc=89,0W) was obtained for the alloy after refining, solutioning at temperature 510 oC for 1,5 hour and aged for 5 hours at temperature 175 oC. A further investigations should be connected with selection of optimal parameters of solutioning and ageing treatments, and with their effect on the starting condition of the alloy in terms of improvement of both mechanical properties of the alloy and its machining properties, taking into consideration obtained surface roughness.

The paper presents a research on the effect of extreme - for the technology of the considered silumin EN AB 47100 - parameters of high-pressure die casting on occurrence of casting nonconformities. Considered was influence of the way of assembling the mould cooled-down to 140-160°C, non-standard for the selected casting, and pouring temperature in the range of 705 to 720°C (higher than the recommended) of non-refined alloy. The castings were prepared with use of a high-pressure casting machine made by Kirov with mould closing force of 2500 kN. Occurrence of nonconformities was evaluated on properly prepared specimens taken from the castings manufactured with various parameters of the injection piston and various multiplication pressures. The results were subjected to quantitative and qualitative analyses of casting nonconformities and distribution of major alloying elements. It was found that proper selection of working parameters of the casting machine, in spite of disadvantageous pouring conditions, makes it possible to reduce occurrence of some casting defects, like shrinkage cavities and porosity, to improve tightness of castings even when the alloy refining process is omitted.

The work is a continuation of research on the use water mist cooling in order to increase efficiency of die-casting aluminum alloys using multipoint water mist cooling system. The paper presents results of investigation of crystallization process and microstructure of synthetic hypereutectic AlSi20 alloy. Casts were made in permanent mold cooled with water mist stream. The study was conducted for unmodified AlSi20 alloy and modified with phosphorus, titanium and boron on the research station allowing sequential multipoint cooling using a dedicated program of computer control. The study demonstrated that the use of mold cooled with water mist stream allows the formation of the microstructure of hypereutectic silumins. A wide range of solidification temperature of hypereutectic silumins increases the potential impact of changes in the cooling rate on a size, a number and a morphology of preeutectic silicon and eutectic α+β (Al+Si).

Opis:
The paper presents the application of the casting method for the production of porous composites, called syntactic foams, of the casting alloy - solid particles type. This method was used to produce composites based on Al alloys reinforced with particles of clinoptilolite, a natural mineral from the zeolite group. Before the casting process, tests were carried out on the morphology, physicochemical properties and chemical composition of the zeolite, which was obtained from a rock called zeolite tuff, mined in a quarry in Kucin, (VSK PRO-ZEO s.r.o., Slovakia). Observations of the microstructure of the produced composites were also carried out using a scanning electron microscope. Diffractometric tests of zeolite rock as delivered for research and of the produced samples reinforced with zeolite particles were also carried out. Initial studies of the density and porosity of the produced composites were performed. The usefulness of the presented method of composite production was assessed on the basis of the conducted structural tests, with particular emphasis on the particle distribution in the alloy matrix.

This paper presents the results of measurements of liquid metal fluidity and linear shrinkage of nickel alloy IN-713C in vacuum induction melting furnace Balzers VSG-2. Because of limited volume of the furnace chamber special models for technological trials were fluidity of hypoeutectic silumin, however in case of nickel superalloy the mould cavity was completely filled in each test because of high required pouring temperature. Positive results were obtained from the modified spiral test for all alloys used in the research. Relationship between the linear shrinkage for the test rod and a specific indicator of contraction defined on a spiral was observed.

Abstract The paper deals with the possibilities of influencing the final microstructure of aluminium alloy castings by changing the external conditions of crystallization and solidification. Aluminum alloys, especially Al-Si alloys, are nowadays one of the most used non-ferrous metal alloys, especially due to their mass application in the automotive field. It is in this industry that extreme emphasis is placed on the quality of cast parts with regard to safety. For this reason, a key production parameter is the mastery of the control of the resulting microstructure of the castings and the associated internal quality, which is subject to high demands defined by international standards. The aim of the experiment of this paper is to evaluate the effect of different preheating of the metal mould on the resulting structure and hardness of test castings made of AlSi7Mg0.3 material. The hardness measurement will be evaluated on a hardness tester. The parameter SDAS, Microporosity, Content of excluded eutectic will be evaluated. Dependencies will be found and plotted.

Among non-ferrous alloys, the aluminum alloys have found the most widespread applications within foundry industry. Hypoeutectic silumin of the AlSi9Mg grade is commonly used for large, heavy duty machinery castings with complicated shape and high strength. From technical point of view, tendency to creation of coarse structure can be considered as a drawback of such alloy, what can have adverse effect on properties of the alloy. To obtain optimal structure of the castings and to assure improvement of their mechanical properties, the most effective treatment to perform is modification. Quality of performed modification treatment depends on proper dosing of inoculant and maintaining suitable temperature and time of keeping the alloy before pouring. In the paper are presented test results of crystallization course of refined and modified silumin of the EN AC–43300 (AlSi9Mg) grade, used in castings of pump casings. It has been determined an effect of performed processes of refining and modification on the mechanical properties (Rm, A5, HB and KCV), additionally, metallurgical tests of the alloy have been performed. Basing on analysis of obtained results, the most advantageous modification variant, which is suitable for castings of pump casings and complying with requirements of customers, has been selected.

One of the most common castings applied in industrial production is aluminium-silicon alloy (ca. 9% Si with Mg). The Al-SiMg alloys have high corrosion resistance, high strength to weight ratio with modifications, very good castability, a low thermal-expansion coefficient, and relatively good wear resistance. These properties make it possible to widely apply the foundry Al-9% SiMg alloy to number of aviation, automotive, and others materials working on tribological applications. Similar to silumins, the aluminium bronze CuAl10Fe3Mn2 is characterized by good mechanical properties and wear and corrosion resistance. This paper presents the research on the treatment of Al-9%SiMg alloy with a composition of CuAl10Fe3Mn2 in different mass ranges. The experiments were conducted by a factor plan 23 for three independent variables. The main additions were strontium, Al-9%SiMg, aluminium bronze, as well as pure or melted with raw silumin. The effect of the tested additions on the microstructure and tensile strength of the Al-9%SiMg alloy was presented in figures. All analysed parameters (mechanical and tribological) of the hypo-eutectic Al-9%SiMg alloy with tested bronze additions are improved. Based on the analysis of the study results, it was found that the microstructure and tensile strength of the tested alloy are determined through the contents introduced of CuAl10Fe3Mn2 to the alloy.
Jednym z najczęściej stosowanych w produkcji przemysłowej stopów odlewniczych jest stop aluminium--krzem (ok. 9% Si z dodatkiem Mg). Stopy Al-SiMg charakteryzują się wysoką odpornością na korozję, w stanie zmodyfikowanym wysokim stosunkiem wytrzymałości do wagi odlewu, bardzo dobrą lejnością, niskim współczynnikiem rozszerzalności cieplnej, względnie dobrą odpornością na zużycie. Te właściwości umożliwiają szerokie zastosowanie odlewniczego stopu Al-9% SiMg do wielu materiałów lotniczych, motoryzacyjnych i innych pracujących również w zastosowaniach tribologicznych. Podobnie jak w przypadku siluminu brąz aluminiowy CuAl10Fe3Mn2 charakteryzuje się dobrymi właściwościami mechanicznymi, zużyciem i odpornością na korozję. W artykule przedstawiono badania dotyczące obróbki stopu Al-9% SiMg składnikiem CuAl10Fe3Mn2 w różnych zakresach masowych. Eksperymenty przeprowadzono za pomocą planu czynnikowego 23 dla trzech niezależnych zmiennych. Głównym dodatkiem były: stront Al-9%SiMg, brąz aluminiowy, zarówno czysty, jak i stopiony z surowym siluminem. Wpływ badanych dodatków na mikrostrukturę i wytrzymałość na rozciąganie stopu Al-9% SiMg przedstawiono na rysunkach. Wszystkie analizowane parametry (mechaniczne i tribologiczne) stopu podeutektycznego Al-9% SiMg z badanym dodatkiem brązu zostały poprawione. Na podstawie analizy wyników badań stwierdzono, że mikrostruktura i właściwości mechaniczne badanego stopu są określone przez zawartość CuAl10Fe3Mn2 wprowadzoną do stopu.
