Opis:
Girders with corrugated steel web are preferred and widely used in recently constructed bridges and industrial buildings. Sandwich core girders with corrugated web are constructed by adding two plates (skins) to the corrugated web. This study aims to investigate the shear span-to-depth ratio impact on the performance of sandwich core steel girders with corrugated web. Three span-to-depth ratios (a/d): 1.0, 1.833 and 2.5, were examined. The test includes three girders with sandwich web thickness of 30 mm, three girders with 60 mm sandwich web thickness, and three girders with conventional flat webs. A total of nine simply supported steel girders subjected to a concentrated load were fabricated and tested up to failure. The responses of the examined girders are presented in term of the load deflection curves, the ultimate load, and the maximum displacement. Among the conclusions drawn in this study that girders with sandwich core thickness of 30 mm demonstrate higher ultimate load capacity than girders with sandwich core of 60 mm, the maximum difference in the ultimate load capacity was about 20% and can be seen at a/d equals to 1.0. The results also pointed out that the behavior of the beams was noticeably impacted by the shear span-to-depth ratio.

The general classification of coal mining waste also includes wastes located in heaps, which contain waste from every stage of coal production. In this type of landfill, there is minestone from pre-mining operations such as preparatory or enabling works as well as waste from the coal enrichment processes and the desulphurization of coal. This paper presents an analysis of all available information connected with the physical and mechanical characteristics of mining waste properties from the processes of extraction and preparation of coal. The values of strength parameters for mining wastes from current production as well as those, which have been deposited in heaps were compared.

Opis:
Folds in evaporites typically have non-cylindrical shapes. Various fold structures are associated with slip surfaces, which, in some cases, can be interpreted as the folding trigger. In the article, we present the analysis of fold shape evolution, studying folds that develop in the vicinity of the layer-parallel slip surface during simple shear deformation. We employ an analytical model that describes the deformation around the slip surface in an isotropic, viscous material. Folds that develop during deformation are clearly non-cylindrical. Folds with an eye pattern in the sections perpendicular to the shearing directions are observed after shear strain γ>5, whereas sheath folds that are specific types of non-cylindrical folds with opening angle exceeding 90º, require γ>10. The folds are characterised by small height. The eye-shape is highly elongated, and their axial ratio commonly exceeds 10. Folds with largest height and elongation are formed in the layers located at the distance of ca. 0.2 of the slip surface radius from the slip surface. Eye structures that develop in the layers closest to the slip surface can have geometry of a concave crescent-shaped roll. Folds with the eye pattern are unlikely to develop next to the slip surfaces in the model, thus, also in the nature these two structures can hardly be noticeable in a single outcrop.

Opis:
In order to meet environmental and socio-economic challenges, the recycling of waste tobe used in the treatment of geotechnical problems is one of the main ways of preserving the environment with a lower economic value. The objective of this experimental work is to improve the characteristics and to study the mechanical behaviour of collapsible soil treated with a new hydraulic stabilizer composed of Crushed Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (CGBS) active by Eggshell Waste (CES). The specimens were mixed with stabilizer content, varying from 0 to 15% in mass, with an initial water content of 4, 6 and 8% respectively. in mass. Oedometer apparatus was used to study the addition of new hydraulic stabilizer effect on the Collapse Potential. Triaxial tests are also conducted to determine the shear strength parameters (cohesion and internal friction angle) of this treated soil. The results of this research study show that the mechanical properties of the treated collapsible soil were significantly improved. An appreciable reduction in the collapse potential is observed. The addition of 15% of this new stabilizer with initial water content of 4% under a compaction of 60 blows/ layer is capable of increasing internal friction angle and cohesion. It can be concluded from this study that the mixture of granulated slag and calcined eggshell can be used as an effective treatment of collapsibility phenomenon at low cost while protecting the environment from industrial waste.

Biochar is proven to enhance soil fertility and increase crop productivity. Given that the influence of biochar on soil compaction remains unclear, selected physico-mechanical properties of soil amended with wood-derived biochar were assessed. For unamended silt loam, the bulk density, maximum bulk density, optimum moisture content, plastic limit, liquid limit, and plasticity index were 1.05 Mg m-3, 1.69 Mg m-3, 16.55, 17.1, 29.3, and 12.2%, respectively. The penetration resistance and shear strength of the unamended silt loam compacted in the standard compaction Proctor mold and at its optimum moisture content were 1800 kPa and 850 kPa, respectively. Results from amending the silt loam with 10% particle size ranges (0.5-212 μm) led to relative decreases of 18.1, 17.75, 66.66, and 97.4% in bulk density, maximum bulk density, penetration resistance, and shear strength, respectively; a 26.8% relative increase in optimum moisture content; along with absolute increases in plastic limit, liquid limit, and plasticity index of 5.3, 13.7, and 8.4%, respectively. While the biochar-amended silt loam soil was more susceptible to compaction, however, soil mechanical impedance enhanced.

The present paper is devoted to the study of phase velocity and attenuation of longitudinal shear vibrations of hollow poroelastic circular cylinders in the presence of dissipation. The explicit expressions for phase velocity and attenuation of longitudinal shear vibrations are derived. The frequency equation of longitudinal shear vibrations and modes obtained in a previous paper are used to compute the phase velocity and attenuation for different dissipations for thin and thick poroelastic cylindrical shells and poroelastic solid cylinder. The physical parameters of sandstone saturated with kerosene and sandstone saturated with water are used for the purpose of computation. It is found that the phase velocity is linear beyond certain frequency. Phase velocity is smaller for a typical anti-symmetric mode compared to the flexural mode. It is greater for the second mode than that of the first mode. Also the phase velocity is larger for a thin poroelastic cylindrical shell than that of a thick poroelastic cylindrical shell. The same is true for attenuation also. Attenuation is very high for the considered dissipations and it increases with the increase in dissipation.

Aeromagnetic data was processed in order to delineate structural trends which may be indicative of potential gold mineral traps in the Watari hill gold prospect located between longitude 5°8''and 5°16'', and latitude 11°24'' and 11°30'' in Garin Hawal district, northwest Nigeria. Landsat-8 OLI data was processed to produce colour composite, band ratio and minimum noise fraction images that mapped the hydrothermal alteration zone in the study area. The multispectral images which were displayed in Red-Green-Blue colours were subsequently pan-sharpened to display a greater image resolution of the area. The application of enhancement algorithms such as an analytic signal to the aeromagnetic data over the alteration zone helped in mapping the mafic metavolcanics, felsic metasediments and intruding granitoid complexes. Further reductions using the second vertical derivative and tilt angle derivative filters aided in delineating fracture/faults and the contact zones of the formations, especially the metasediments-metavolcanic boundary that delineates the shear zone. This study showed that the low-angle geologic structure between the metasediments and metavolcanics where hydrothermal alteration is present is likely to accommodate veins of gold mineralization in the study area.

Opis:
Waste material such as used tires is increasing every year, which poses environmental problems. However, such material has been used in several geotechnical applications as alternative lightweight backfill in highway embankments and/or behind retaining walls, providing environmental, economic and technical benefits. These applications require knowledge of engineering properties of soil-tire rubber mixtures. The present study aims to show the possibility of tire rubber usage in sand by evaluating the shear strength and deformability of sand mixed with granulated rubber, in weight percentages between 0 and 50%. The tire rubber content was found to influence the stress-strain and deformation behavior of the mixtures. The shear strength of sand mixed with 10% or 20% tire rubber was higher than that measured for sand only. However, the trend for TRC = 30–50% was different. Samples with a rubber content of 30-50% exhibited a rapid decrease in the stress ratio compared with that of sand. The major principal strain at maximum stress ratio was found to increase with increasing tire rubber content. However, it was observed that the lateral strains (minor and intermediate principal strains) of samples reduced significantly with the addition of tire rubber to the sand.

Purpose: The paper shows that in order to increase the efficiency of hydraulic transport systems in mining a transition to the transportation of slurries with a high concentration of solids in the slurry flow is necessary. Design/methodology/approach: The aim of the research is to determine the optimal concentrations to ensure effectiveness of thickened tailings hydrotransport using the example of the Verninskaya processing factory, taking into account the maximum possible concentration of the solid phase and the rheological properties of the pulp. Findings: Experimental studies have shown that slurry tailings of gold-containing ore with mass concentrations of more than 55% are viscoplastic fluids. Experiments on a rotational viscometer allowed us to establish the main rheological characteristics of the studied slurries — shear stress and the dynamic effective viscosity. It has been established that over the entire range of concentrations from 55 to 65%, the flow of slurries is described by the Bingham rheological equation. Experimental studies of hydraulic transport performed on a laboratory setup with a pipeline diameter of 50 mm confirmed the results obtained on a rotational viscometer. Curves of mixture stream are inclined straight lines that cut off on the axis of head of the sections, which determine the initial hydraulic slope corresponding to the yield shear stress on the rheological curves. Originality/value: According to the results of the experiments, a method has been developed for calculating the hydraulic transport of high concentrated slurries of tailings of gold-bearing ore. Calculations showed that in a given range of performance of hydrotransport system and the mass concentration of the solid phase pressure losses vary from 11 to 84 m water column/m. Head loss values grow with increasing concentration. A sharp increase in head loss occurs in the concentration range from 60 to 65% and above.

Hollow Lightweight Concrete (HLC) beams are gaining popularity due to low cost and low weight as compared with the Solid Lightweight Concrete (SLC) beams. HLC and SLC beams decrease in weight, without losing strength and durability. Flexural and shear behavior of reinforced HLC and SLC beams made with sawdust under two-point load is investigated in this study. The ultimate deformation efficiency and shear resistant mechanism of HLC beams are discussed experimentally and compared with other SLC beams. The beams, tested in this research, are rectangular. Beams were designed and constructed as 12 * 23 * 100 cm. Six concrete beam models were prepared including three SLC beams without the hollow and the other three HLC beams poured hollow 50 * 7.5 cm throughout the all beam of 100 cm. All beams were split according to the distance between vertical stirrups, these stirrups were divided into three specimens 45, 13, and 6 cm. By analyzing six experimental test beams, in this research, investigated the effect of diverse factors on the shear of beams. On comparison with normal concrete beams, this work describes the failure of mechanism, process, and ductility. The first crack loads, ultimate loads, load-deflection behavior, crack patterns and shapes of failure were investigated in this study. The experimental results show the ultimate performance of HLC beams are pure shear and controlled by yielding tension and compression steel bars. Also, it is found that the measured size and configuration of the hollow opening had an effect on the load-carry capacity and mid-span deflection of HLC beams. Thus, the design and construction details of beams can be additionally customized to reduce the total cost and weight of the HLC beams.

The impact of steel and polypropylene fibers on the performance of lightweight self-compacting concrete (LWSCC) beams was investigated in this study. Seven beams with various parameters were cast and tested. Partial (50%) and full (100%) replacement of coarse aggregate with lightweight aggregate expanded clay (LECA) were considered. In addition, a 1% volumetric ratio of steel or hybrid (steel and polypropylene) fiber was added to LWSCC beams to study their effect on the shear performance. The LWSCC beams had a decrease in ultimate load and stiffness of 23 and 30% for partial and full replacement, respectively when compared to normal weight beam. The addition of steel fiber improved the efficiency of LWSCC beams in terms of crack formation, failure mode, crack width, and ultimate load, as well as changed the failure mode from shear to flexure. The ultimate load for hybrid LWSCC was increased by around 6% for a partial replacement and 13% for full replacement as compared to beams without fibers. However, hybrid beams had a larger bearing capacity, little more cracks with smaller size, and ductile failure.

Profile deck steel sheets are used in composite deck slabs. These sheets are standard in dimensions and shapes besides they are supplied with embossments and indentations. Such sheets are not available in Iraqi markets nowadays therefore people used another type of sheets which are corrugated without embossments or indentations in very wide range. This study covers the use of such sheets in composite slabs as decks instead of standard profiled steel sheets. The study comprises testing slabs of dimensions 0.9 × 2.5 m reinforced by steel fabric mesh and rested on corrugated sheets. Two types of shear spans are selected shorter and longer to study the longitudinal shear force transmitted due to the applied loads according to the Eurocode 4. The shorter shear spans are 600, 500 and 400 mm while longer one is 800, 750 and 700 mm. The study extended to support the requirements of design equation of the Eurocode by shear bond method also known as m–k method. The evaluated values of m and k are 0.094 and 65 respectively. The result of k which plays a very important role in shear transfer is small compared to what available in literature, therefore it is recommended to make use of shear connectors in such construction or any else method.

Melting temperatures of 145.11°C, 140.89°C and 143.84°C were attained correspondingly for the 1%, 2% and 3% ZrO2 reinforced Sn58Bi solder. The microstructures especially the spacing between the lamellar structures of the Sn58Bi solder alloy was narrower for 1% ZrO2 added with Sn58Bi solder alloy. The highest and lowest hardness value of 32.28 HV and 27.62 HV was recorded for 1% and 2% ZrO2 additions respectively. Highest shear strength value was noted for the 3% ZrO2 added SnBi/Copper joint with 0.8712 kN, while the lowest value of 0.4380 kN noted for the 1% ZrO2 added SnBi/Copper joint. The presence of small-sized ZrO2 nanoparticles can be seen to be properly dispersed at the solder joint to increase the shear load at maximum joint stress.
