Minority stress theory explains psychological vulnerability in sexual minorities; however, data is scarce in the Central and Eastern European region. Combining the minority stress model with the Psychological Mediation Framework, we tested a theoretically developed path model. Participants were 1452 (Mage = 24.9 years) Czech sexual-minority individuals (38.7% gay, 27.1% lesbian, 18.7% bisexual women). The model explained 55.5% of the variance of psychological distress in the overall sample, representing a total effect of 9.75% (p < .001) increase in measurement units by the modeled associations. Within the subsamples, the associations were similar between harassment and rejection, stigma awareness, and rejection sensitivity, as well as emotional dysregulation, rumination, and psychological distress. However, internalized homonegativity was a stronger factor of psychological well-being in gay men and lesbian women than in bisexual women. Bisexual women may have experienced less social support and more emotional dysregulation due to more concealment and rejection sensitivity, respectively. While we confirmed that the minority stress model applies to the Czech context and explained well psychological distress in sexual minorities, our data highlights notable differences between bisexual women who reported highest rates of distress compared to gay men and lesbian women.

W niniejszym artykule analizie poddałam stanowiska polskich partii politycznych wobec tematyki związków partnerskich. Przeanalizowałam ten wątek w kontekście kwestii dotyczących związków par jednopłciowych. Zamierzeniem badawczym jest wykazanie, jak partie odnoszą się do tematyki związków partnerskich. Przeanalizowane zostaną także aspekty, wokół których koncentrują się oponenci oraz zwolennicy związków partnerskich. Analiza programów poszczególnych partii pozwala na wyciągniecie wniosku, iż niektóre z postulatów środowiska LGBT nie mają w nich bezpośredniego odbicia w postaci stanowiska danej partii. Niemniej jednak warte przytoczenia są także ogólne deklaracje ideowe, bowiem to na nich często bazuje społeczność mniejszości seksualnych, odnosząc do nich swoje deklaracje ewentualnego poparcia.
In this article, I present an analysis of the position of Polish political parties on the subject of human partnerships. I have analysed this topic in the context of issues concerning couples of the same sex. The purpose of the research is to show how parties treat the theme of human partnerships. I have also analysed the aspects which opponents and supporters of the samesex partnerships focus their attention to. Some of the demands of the LGBT community are not compatible with political parties’ programmes. I have quoted some general ideological declarations of political parties as the communities of sexual minorities quite often refer to them looking for support.

The principle of equality and the prohibition of discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation are enshrined in the EU Treaties. A strong baseline is also laid down in secondary EU legislation. However, the impact of the respective provisions is constrained in two ways: by challenges to their enforcement and, regarding the secondary EU law, by limitations in their scope to employment. This paper takes stock of the EU non-discrimination law with respect to sexual minorities’ rights as well as the enforcement mechanisms applied by the EU to safeguard implementation in Member States. To contextualize the findings, we analyse the cases of Hungary and Poland where measures adopted by state and local authorities have led to decisive steps by the EU, including withholding financial transfers. The paper identifies systemic weaknesses in existing enforcement mechanisms and concludes by pointing to institutional reform which could address them.

Equality Parades, which are connected with demonstrating social diversity which is the source of social inequality of Polish society to the public and which have been organised in big Polish cities for a few years, get a varied public response. They evoke reluctance of a part of the society, are actively supported by others but the majority of Poles do not openly declare their support or disapproval for public manifesting of otherness and demanding equal rights for minorities. Lack of open manifestation of views thus makes it difficult to analyse tolerance level that would determine the actual attitude of Poles to minorities, including sexual ones. The survey that was carried out in Krakow after Equality Parade in 2010 was an attempt to examine the views of Krakow residents concerning the organisation of such demonstrations and getting to know the level of tolerance for public manifestation of views by minorities, including sexual ones.

Social work in Poland and in the United States shares the values of human dignity and self-determination, but there are often value conflicts in terms of how various groups experience social roles and social expectations. This paper explores the use of multiple lenses to understand the past and current conditions for LGBT+ people in Poland. An international, university-level collaboration uses a framework of “invisible groups” to highlight the needs of those who are on the margins of society and whose human and individual rights are suppressed. The article reviews the results of a recently published on-line survey of LGBT+ populations and their views of their experiences in Polish society to illustrate their “invisibility” and the need for advocacy from the international social work community.

The article’s subject is the status of the homosexual minority in the world of sports, which-as one would assume-is a hetero-normative world. The author draws attention to the different situations of lesbians and gays in sports as a result both of the manner in which sports themselves are seen and of how femininity and masculinity in sports are viewed (certain types of sports activity are perceived as being masculine, and certain as being feminine). The attitudes of the male and female athletes themselves are described, as well as the attitude towards them in the sports environment and their perception in public opinion. The Gay Games, competitions for sexual minorities, are also presented, with their relation to mainstream (heterosexual) sports. Particular attention is paid to the ambiguous status of sexual minorities and various practices used within these milieus and towards them

This article examines sociological, psychological, and suicidological research on the determinants of male suicide to explore the fact that Polish men complete suicide 7.4 times more than women, a frequency twice as high as in the US. This paper is based upon an examination of relevant literature and statistical databases. A keyword search was completed in both Polish and English language databases. Ideals of masculinity and negative social attitudes towards a non-binary view of gender may increase stressors and discourage men in Poland from revealing their problems while seeking support, explaining the high rates of suicide completion among Polish men. Suicide prevention programs must tackle gender conceptualizations and alcohol use patterns as well as increase avenues for male help-seeking behaviors. These changes will require political and religious organizations to confront the weakening of male hegemony as the organizing principle for family and society. This paper explores the increased rate of male suicide in Poland from the perspective of gender.

Homosexual, bisexual, and transgender persons (collectively labelled sexual minorities) have created a characteristic sociolect, whose most conspicuous aspect is its lexis. The major criterion for identifying the words and expressions of the sociolect in relation to standard Polish is the former’s differential nature with regard to the latter. The present study collects and characterizes the otherwise dispersed lexis of the sociolect. Within the lexis, the most numerous group are (semantic and word-formational) neologisms, while (internal and external, esp. English) borrowings are not so frequent. It is concluded that the slang of Polish sexual minorities has above all an integrating function and facilitates expressive communication among the members of the group. It is also “professional”, in a certain understanding of the term, while its weakest function is that of blocking out-group communication.
Środowisko osób homoseksualnych, biseksualnych i transgenderowych (nazywane ogólnie mniejszościami seksualnymi) wytworzyło typowy dla siebie język, w tym przede wszystkim słownictwo. Podstawowym kryterium wyodrębnienia wyrazów, wyrażeń i zwrotów specyficznych dla tego socjolektu jest ich dyferencyjność w stosunku do standardowego języka ogólnego. W artykule zebrano rozproszone w różnych zapisach (najczęściej internetowych) słownictwo charakterystyczne dla mniejszości seksualnych oraz dokonano jego charakterystyki. Stwierdzono, że większość stanowią neologizmy (semantyczne i słowotwórcze), mniej liczną grupę zaś – zapożyczenia (wewnętrzne – z polszczyzny potocznej – i zewnętrzne – z języka angielskiego).Przeprowadzona analiza prowadzi do wniosku, ze slang polskich mniejszości seksualnych spełnia przede wszystkim funkcje spajającą to środowisko i pozwala na ekspresywne porozumiewanie się osób, które z nim się utożsamiają; cechuje go też swoista „zawodowość”, natomiast w najsłabszym stopniu ujawnia się w nim funkcja utajniania komunikacji.

The paper analyses the concept of equality in theoretical, philosophical, and practical context, as it appears in the programs of the Polish political parties. Inquiries regard the concept of equality for the LGBTQ community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) in the context of human rights. The concept of human rights is discussed within the vertical and horizontal approach. The following questions are addressed: How do political parties relate to the concept of equality? Does equality appear in the political programs, and if it does, then in relation to which social groups? Do political parties engage in the problem of equality with regard to the LGBTQ community? The aim of the paper is to indicate significant differences in this respect between political parties.

Tematem artykułu jest polityka emancypacji kobiet oraz mniejszości seksualnych na przykładzie e-sportu. Omawia on zagadnienie mechanizmów emancypacyjnych, których narzędziem jest wirtualna rywalizacja sportowa. E-sport jest zjawiskiem stosunkowo młodym, dlatego też temat egalitaryzmu i działań równościowych w jego obszarze nie był jeszcze przedmiotem naukowej refleksji. Problem ten został zbadany przy użyciu pojęcia polityki emancypacji według Anthony’ego Giddensa. W procesie badawczym zastosowano podejście neoinstytucjonalne, a wyniki zaprezentowano w postaci analizy. Niniejszy artykuł konceptualizuje podstawowe pojęcia dla tak zarysowanego pola badawczego oraz inicjuje dyskusję naukową na ten temat.
This article focuses on the politics of emancipation of women and sexual minorities in e-sports. It discusses emancipation mechanisms, which use virtual sports competition as a tool. Due to the fact that e-sports is a relatively young phenomenon, the topic of egalitarianism and equality measures in e-sports has not yet been the subject of scientific reflection.The problem was investigated using the concept of the politics of emancipation as defined by Anthony Giddens. The research process uses a neo-institutional approach and the results are presented in the form of an analysis. This article conceptualizes the basic concepts of the research field and initiates a scientific discussion on the subject.
