A connection between the Landesman-Lazer condition and the solvability of the equation Lx = N(x) in a cone with a noninvertible linear operator L is studied. The result is based on the abstract framework from [5], applied to the existence of periodic solutions of ordinary differential equations, and compared with theorems by Santanilla (see [7]).

Three methods for the study of the solvability of semilinear equations with noninvertible linear parts are compared: the alternative method, the continuation method of Mawhin and a new perturbation method [22]-[27]. Some extension of the last method and applications to differential equations in Banach spaces are presented.

Let Ω be a bounded domain in $ℝ^n$, n ≥ 3, with a smooth boundary ∂Ω; let L be a linear, second order, elliptic operator; let f and g be two real-valued functions defined on Ω × ℝ such that f(x,z) ≤ g(x,z) for almost every x ∈ Ω and every z ∈ ℝ. In this paper we prove that, under suitable assumptions, the problem { f(x,u) ≤ Lu ≤ g(x,u)   in Ω, u = 0     on ∂Ω, has at least one strong solution $u ∈ W^{2,p}(Ω) ∩ W^{1,p}_0(Ω). Next, we present some remarkable special cases.

In this paper, we are concerned with the semilinear parabolic equation ∂u/∂t - Δu = g(t,x,u) if $(t,x) ∈ R_{+} × Ω$ u = 0 if $(t,x) ∈ R_{+} × ∂Ω$, where $Ω ⊂ R^{N}$ is a bounded domain with smooth boundary ∂Ω and $g : R _{+} × \bar{Ω} × R → R $ is T-periodic with respect to the first variable. The existence and the multiplicity of T-periodic solutions for this problem are shown when g(t,x,ξ)/ξ lies between two higher eigenvalues of - Δ in Ω with the Dirichlet boundary condition as ξ → ±∞.

In this paper we show that the set of all mild solutions of the Cauchy problem for a functional-differential inclusion in a separable Banach space E of the form x'(t) ∈ A(t)x(t) + F(t,x_t) is an $R_δ$-set. Here {A(t)} is a family of linear operators and F is a Carathéodory type multifunction. We use the existence result proved by V. V. Obukhovskiĭ [22] and extend theorems on the structure of solutions sets obtained by N. S. Papageorgiou [23] and Ya. I. Umanskiĭ [32].
