The basic definitions and theorems from the semi-Markov processes theory are discussed in the paper. The semi-Markov processes theory allows us to construct the models of the reliability systems evolution within the time frame. Applications of semi-Markov processes in reliability are considered. Semi-Markov model of the cold standby system with repair, semi-Markov process as the reliability model of the operation with perturbations and semi-Markov process as a failure rate are presented in the paper.

The paper is concerned with the application of perturbed semi-Markov (SM) processes in reliability problems. There are two kinds of perturbed SM processes presented in the paper. First of them was defined by Shpak and the second one was introduced by Pavlov and Ushakov. Shpak’s concept of perturbed SM is applied for calculating the approximate reliability function of many tasks operation process and Pavlov and Ushakov concept of that one is used to obtain the approximate reliability function of a repairable cold standby system with a switch.

The paper presents semi-Markov models of technical state transitions for diesel engines, useful for determination of their reliability, as a result of the conducted statistical empirical studies. Interpretation of technical states provided for this sort of engines refers to ship main engines, i.e. engines employed in propulsion systems of sea-going ships. The considerations recognize diesel engine as a diagnosed system (SDN), of which state can be identified by a diagnosing system (SDG). Both of the systems: SDN and SDG compose a diagnostic system (SD). Examples of three-state semi-Markov models were applied to demonstrate that in case of use of proper diagnosing systems (SDG) for identification of technical states of such engines as SDN, by classification of the states to the relevant class of the reference states, it is possible to make use of a Markov model to determine reliability of the engines. For developing a Markov model of state transitions for the engines, there were applied functions of the risk of damage: λ12 that causes transition from state s1 to state s2, and λ13 that causes transition from state s1 to state s3, as well as intensity functions of recovery (restitution): λ21 that causes transition from state s2 to state s1, and λ31 that causes transition from state s3 to state s1.

In this article there is presented a description of a method for control of the operation process in a complex operation system of technical objects operation where semi-Markov decision processes are used for control. The study has been based on the operation process of a real bus municipal transportation system. For complex systems of technical objects operation, it is possible to achieve the set goal – appropriate accomplishment of the assigned task (tasks) with required efficiency - only when the control decisions, made by the system decision-makers, are rational. In systems where the complex operation process of technical objects is carried out, the choice of rational control decisions (from possible variants) is an issue of great importance and difficulty. In real complex operation systems of technical objects operation, the process of making control decisions should be carried out using mathematical procedures and methods, rather than according to the system decision makers' intuition or experience. Use of appropriate mathematical methods for control of the operation process facilitates the choice of rational control decisions providing correct and efficient accomplishment of the assigned tasks. The presented method involves elaborating a mathematical operation model (semi-Markov model) and choosing the best control strategy (from possible decision variants), according to the accepted criterion (criteria) of technical objects operation system assessment.

The problems presented in this article deal with operation and maintenance process control in complex systems of technical object operation and maintenance. The article presents the description of the method concerning the control availability for technical objects (means of transport) on the basis of the mathematical model of the operation and maintenance process with the implementation of the decisive processes by semi-Markov. The presented method means focused on the preparing the decisive for the operation and maintenance process for technical objects (semi-Markov model) and after that specifying the best control strategy (optimal strategy) from among possible decisive variants in accordance with the approved criterion (criteria) of the activity evaluation of the system of technical objects operation and maintenance. In the presented method specifying the optimal strategy for control availability in the technical objects means a choice of a sequence of control decisions made in individual states of modelled operation and maintenance process for which the function being a criterion of evaluation reaches the extreme value. In order to choose the optimal control strategy the implementation of the genetic algorithm was chosen. Depending on one’s needs, the genetic algorithm including the obtained model of operation and maintenance process may be implemented for mathematic formulation and solution of a wide array of problems connected with control of complex systems of technical object operation and maintenance. It pertains mostly to the economic analysis, safety management and controlling availability and reliability of complex systems. The opinions were presented on the example of the operation and maintenance process of the means of transport implemented in the real system of the bus municipal transport.

In the paper a Semi-markov processes are used to construct a general model of complex industrial systems’ operation processes. Main characteristics of this model are determined as well. In particular case, for a port oil pipeline transportation system, its operation states are defined, the relationships between them are fixed and particular model of its operation process is constructed and its main characteristics are determined. Further, the joint model of the system operation process and the system reliability is defined and applied to the reliability and risk evaluation of the port oil pipeline transportation system.

During rational operation of technical objects and systems various operational decisions are made and decision-making process itself should be consisted in selecting that considered most favourable out of all possible to be taken. Choice of such decision is possible after taking into account many different information items but it never be completely correct without accounting for data and indices dealing with reliability. In the case when probabilistic principle of failure occurrence is determined , values of reliability indices can be estimated by using reliability mathematical models. During operation of many technical devices and systems ( e.g. ship main propulsion systems ) was observed many times the fact that their correct operation time is not a unique measure of their wear. Therefore for description of their serviceability and reliability can be used models of change of their reliability states in the form of semi-Markov processes based on the assumption of multi-state character of technical objects. This paper presents a comparative analysis of results of simulation reliability tests of a hypothetical technical object , obtained with the use of reliability models in the form of Markov processes and semi-Markov ones, corresponding to them, called also “half-Markov” processes.

Operation of ship propulsion system is associated with realization of definite operational goals. If to elements of the system the operational reliability strategy could be applied, the situation would be very simple as existing conditions would unambiguously determine application of means being on hand. However decision to reject application of the strategy (even if hypothetical) becomes obvious with a view of necessity of ensuring an acceptable level of safety to ship and environment as well as presence of associated formal and legal limitations. Therefore complexity of operational reality makes that means intended for operation may be used in various ways. Objectivity and rationality in making decision, assumed optimal in given conditions, forces to apply an evaluating (quantitative) approach to the problem, hence to search for such their parameters (indices) which, in a given decision situation, can be deemed most adequate. To precisely determine the task it is necessary to specify also its duration time, apart from conditions in which it will be realized. When considering propulsion engine, i.e. the main element of ship propulsion system, especially important becomes not only the problem which amount of energy could be at one's disposal but also within which time interval it could be delivered. Therefore apart from applying the commonly used reliability indices, it seems sensible to consider the operation in such evaluating approach as it could be determined by energy and time simultaneously.

In this paper is presented possible application of the theory of semi-Markov processes to elaborating an eight-state model of the process of occurrence of serviceability state and unserviceability states of sea-going ships making critical manoeuvres during their entering and leaving the ports. In the analysis it was taken into account that sea-going ships are in service for a very long time t (t → ∞). The model was elaborated to determine the probability (P0) of correct execution of critical manoeuvres during ship’s entering and leaving the port as well as the probabilities Pj(j = 1, 2, 3, …, 7) of incorrect execution of critical manoeuvres by a ship, that leads to marine accidents. It was assumed that such accidents result from: ship’s grounding on port approaching fairway, collision with a ship on port approching fairway, collision with a pierhead during passing through port entrance, collision with a hydrotechnical structure during ship’s passing through port channels, collision with a port quay during coming alongside it and collision with a ship already moored to the quay. The probability (P0) was assumed a measure of safe execution of a critical manoeuvre. The probability characterizes possibility of avoiding any collision during ship’s entering and leaving the port. The probability Pa = 1 – P0 was assumed a measure of occurrence of a collsion and - consequently - marine accident. The probability Pa was interpreted as a sum of the probabilities Pj(j = 1, 2, 3, …, 7) of occurrence of all the selected events. In summing up the paper, attention was drawn to its merits which - in opinion of this author - are crucial for research on real process of accidents during entering the port and leaving it by sea-going ship in difficult navigation conditions.

To describe the safety evolution of the system, we constructed a Semi-Markov process by defining the states and the renewal kernel of that one. In our model, the time of the safety system operation is represented by a random variable that denotes the first passage of time from the given state to the subset of states. Appropriate theorems from the Semi-Markov processes theory allow us to calculate the safety function and the mean time of the safety operation.

Technical reliability plays an important role among factors affecting the power output of a wind farm. The reliability is determined by an internal collection grid topology and reliability of its electrical components, e.g. generators, transformers, cables, switch breakers, protective relays, and busbars. A wind farm reliability’s quantitative measure can be the probability distribution of combinations of operating and failed states of the farm’s wind turbines. The operating state of a wind turbine is its ability to generate power and to transfer it to an external power grid, which means the availability of the wind turbine and other equipment necessary for the power transfer to the external grid. This measure can be used for quantitative analysis of the impact of various wind farm topologies and the reliability of individual farm components on the farm reliability, and for determining the expected farm output power with consideration of the reliability. This knowledge may be useful in an analysis of power generation reliability in power systems. The paper presents probabilistic models that quantify the wind farm reliability taking into account the above-mentioned technical factors. To formulate the reliability models Bayesian networks and semi-Markov processes were used. Using Bayesian networks the wind farm structural reliability was mapped, as well as quantitative characteristics describing equipment reliability. Wśród czynników wpływających na moc wyjściową farmy wiatrowej (FW) istotną rolę odgrywa niezawodność techniczna. O niezawodności tej decydują m.in.: topologia wewnętrznej sieci elektroenergetycznej FW i niezawodność urządzeń elektrycznych wchodzących w jej skład, np. generatorów, transformatorów, kabli, łączników, zabezpieczeń elektroenergetycznych, szyn zbiorczych. Ilościową miarą niezawodności FW może być rozkład prawdopodobieństwa kombinacji stanów gotowości elektrowni wiatrowych (EW) farmy. Stan gotowości danej EW oznacza jej gotowość do produkcji energii elektrycznej i przekazywania jej do zewnętrznej sieci elektroenergetycznej, co oznacza zdatność EW oraz pozostałych urządzeń niezbędnych do przekazania energii do sieci zewnętrznej. Miarę tę można wykorzystywać m.in. do ilościowej analizy wpływu różnych topologii FW i niezawodności poszczególnych urządzeń farmy na jej niezawodność oraz wyznaczać wartość oczekiwaną mocy farmy z uwzględnieniem niezawodności. Wiedza ta może być przydatna w analizie niezawodności wytwarzania energii elektrycznej w systemach elektroenergetycznych. W artykule przedstawiono modele probabilistyczne opisujące ilościowo niezawodność FW z uwzględnieniem wspomnianych wyżej czynników technicznych. Do sformułowania modeli niezawodnościowych wykorzystano sieci Bayesowskie (BN) i procesy semi-Markowa (PSM). Za pomocą BN odwzorowano niezawodność strukturalną FW i charakterystyki ilościowe opisujące niezawodność urządzeń. Do wyznaczania tych charakterystyk zastosowano PSM. W artykule zaprezentowano przykład obliczeniowy dotyczący wyznaczenia: (i) rozkładu prawdopodobieństwa kombinacji stanów gotowości czterech EW wchodzących w skład FW i (ii) oczekiwanej mocy wyjściowej FW z uwzględnieniem jej niezawodności.

Niezawodność urządzeń technicznych farmy wiatrowej (FW) wpływa między innymi na moc wyjściową farmy. Ilościową miarą tej niezawodności może być rozkład prawdopodobieństwa kombinacji stanów gotowości elektrowni wiatrowych (EW) farmy, tj. stanów oznaczających ich gotowość do produkcji energii elektrycznej i przekazywania jej do sieci elektroenergetycznej. Miarę tę można stosować do np. ilościowej analizy wpływu różnych topologii FW i niezawodności urządzeń farmy na jej niezawodność oraz wyznaczać wartość oczekiwaną mocy farmy z uwzględnieniem niezawodności. W artykule przedstawiono modele probabilistyczne opisujące ilościowo niezawodność FW, wykorzystujące sieci Bayesowskie (BN) i procesy semi-Markowa (PSM). W artykule zaprezentowano przykład obliczeniowy dotyczący analizy niezawodności FW składającej się z 4 EW, potwierdzający użyteczność metody.
Factors that influence wind-farm output power also include the availability of a farm. The availability depends on: arrangements of a wind farm (WF), internal collection grid topology and reliability of electrical equipment included in WF (e.g. generators, transformers, cables, breakers, protective relays, busbars and so on). One of the measures of WF availability can be probability distribution of combinations of availability states of wind turbines generators (WTGs), where availability state means the WTG is able to generate and deliver power to external grid. This measure can be applied in e.g.: (1) study of different internal collection grid topologies and reliability of WF electrical equipment effects on availability of WF and (2) assessment of WF output power considering farm availability. In this work the probabilistic models of WF availability are presented. Because of stochastic nature of electrical equipment failures they rely on two modeling methods, i.e. Bayesian networks and semi-Markov processes. Both approaches allow taking into account the electrical equipment of WF, internal grid topology of WF and reliability characteristics of equipment. The case study of availability modeling is presented as well.

Opis:
The paper presents reasons for the need of discerning the notions: likelihood of diagnosis and rightness of diagnosis while taking operating decisions. A probability formula for establishing the right diagnosis has been derived as a likelihood measure of diagnosis. For deriving the formuła, the theory of semi-Markov processes and Bayes' formula of the conditional probability have been applied. Other probability measures of likelihood of diagnosis have been also presented. These measures concern the technical state of such important systems as combustion engines of sea-going ships. However, they can be of use also for other ship systems. The paper provides description of a stochastic decision situation following from operation of combustion engines in any operating system and on this background there is presented some proposals of applying the technical diagnostics for controlling the engine operating process. Formulating a problem for the combustion engines, solving the problem, diagnostic inference and likelihood of diagnosis as well a simplified model of combustion engine operation taking into account diagnosis and control in time of operation are presented in the paper.

This paper proposes a novel approach to reliability evaluation for active Fault Tolerant Control Systems (FTCSs). By introducing a reliability index based on the control performance and hard deadline, a semi-Markov process model is proposed to describe system operation for reliability evaluation. The degraded performance of FTCSs in the presence of imperfect Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) is reflected by semi-Markov states. The semi-Markov kernel, the key parameter of the process, is determined by four probabilistic parameters based on the Markovian model of FTCSs. Computed from the transition probabilities of the semi-Markov process, the reliability index incorporates control objectives, hard deadline, and the effects of imperfect FDI, a suitable quantitative measure of the overall performance.

Przedstawiony w pracy model może być wykorzystywany w procesie analizy różnego rodzaju zagadnień, obejmujących problem modelowania procesu eksploatacji obiektu technicznego. Opracowany model pozwala na: ocenę zgodności funkcjonującego procesu eksploatacji obiektu z założonym harmonogramem, ocenę wyników procesów eksploatacji obiektu technicznego poprzez analizę funkcji prawdopodobieństw stanów oraz funkcje gotowości obiektu technicznego, symulację procesu eksploatacji w fazie projektowania jego procesu użytkowania oraz obsługiwania. Przedstawiony w pracy model umożliwia analizę oraz symulowanie procesu eksploatacji obiektu technicznego, posiada jednak pewne ograniczenia: brak możliwości zmiany harmonogramu procesu eksploatacji obiektu technicznego w dowolnej chwili jego realizacji; brak własności dyspozytorskich modelu, mających na celu wskazanie możliwości zmian w procesie eksploatacji mających na celu osiągnięcie założonych kryteriów (minimalna wartość prawdopodobieństwa stanu, minimalny poziom funkcji gotowości procesu); brak implementacji zdarzeń losowych z innego systemu, w celu zamodelowania potencjalnie możliwych zdarzeń losowych, mających wpływ na proces eksploatacji obiektu technicznego.
Aim of the study which was to develop a model of the operation of a technical process of timing, was executed by developing the following partial tasks: defining the basic relationship between the stages of the operation of a technical process, adopting theoretical assumptions, describing modeled the operation of a technical process, developing a model of the operation of a technical process, verify the operation of a process model based on a technical inquiry into the real system operation of low cost airlines aircrafts. Model presented in this work can be used in the analysis of various issues, including the problem of modeling the operation of a technical process. The model allows to: evaluate of assessment process, exploit the functioning of the schedule, evaluate the results of the operation of a technical process by analyzing the functions of probabilities of states of readiness of a technical object, simulating the operation process in the design phase of the process of use and handling. Presented model provides analyzing and simulating the operation of a technical process, but it also has some limitations: it is not possible to change the schedule of operation of a technical object at any time for its implementation, lack of ownership of dispatching model, designed to identify possible changes in the operation process to achieve established criteria (minimum probability of a minimum level of preparedness functions of the process), lack of implementation of the mishap from another system, in order to model a potentially possible random events that affect the operation of a technical process.

Opis:
A possibility of applying the theory of semi-Markov (semimarkovian) processes to the description of the reliability of an automotive vehicle has been presented, with taking a passenger car as an example. In the car considered, such constructional systems (functional components) as engine with fuel, lube oil, and coolant feeding systems, clutch, gearbox, drive shaft, driving axle, steering and suspension system, braking system, electrical system, body with chassis, and measuring and monitoring equipment have been distinguished. A reliability model of the car has been developed in the form of a semi-Markov process, which is a single-state model. The set of reliability states has been built as consisting of one state of car serviceability and ten states of the functional components as specified above. A graph of changes in these states has been shown and an initial distribution and a functional matrix representing changes in the said reliability states of the car have been defined. Formulas have been derived that define the boundary distribution of the process of changes in the technical states of such a car. This distribution represents the probability of the car being serviceable and unserviceable due to a failure of any of the functional components mentioned above. The possibility of using statistics to estimate the probabilities of changes in the said car reliability states has been presented. A possibility of applying the theory of semi-Markov processes to the investigation of car reliability in the case of defining the instantaneous distribution of the process of changes in the car reliability states has also been mentioned.
W artykule przedstawiono możliwość zastosowania teorii procesów semi-Markowa (semimarkowskich) do opisu niezawodności samochodu, na przykładzie samochodu osobowego. W rozważaniach uwzględniony został samochód, w którym wyróżniono takie węzły konstrukcyjne (zespoły funkcjonalne) jak: silnik z układami zasilania czynnikami energetycznymi (paliwem, olejem smarowym i cieczą chłodzącą), sprzęgło, skrzynia biegów, wał napędowy, most napędowy, zespół kierowniczy z zawieszeniem, zespół hamulcowy, zespół urządzeń elektrycznych, nadwozie wraz z podwoziem i zespół urządzeń kontrolno-pomiarowych. Opracowano model niezawodnościowy samochodu w formie procesu semimarkowskiego, który jest modelem jedenastostanowym. Do zbioru stanów niezawodnościowych samochodu zakwalifikowano stan zdatności samochodu oraz dziesięć stanów niezdatności wymienionych zespołów funkcjonalnych. Przedstawiono graf zmian tych stanów oraz określono rozkład początkowy i macierz funkcyjną odwzorowującą zmiany wymienionych stanów niezawodnościowych samochodu. Wyprowadzone zostały wzory określające rozkład graniczny procesu zmian stanów technicznych takiego samochodu. Rozkład ten stanowią prawdopodobieństwa przebywania samochodu w stanie zdatności oraz w stanach niezdatności wskutek uszkodzenia dowolnego z wymienionych jego zespołów funkcjonalnych. Przedstawiono możliwość zastosowania statystyki do oszacowania prawdopodobieństw zmiany wspominanych stanów niezawodnościowych samochodu. Zasygnalizowano także możliwość zastosowania teorii procesów semimarkowskich do badań niezawodności samochodów w przypadku opracowania rozkładu chwilowego procesu zmian ich stanów niezawodnościowych.

The article analyses the operation of reciprocal internal combustion engines, with marine engines used as an example. The analysis takes into account types of energy conversion in the work spaces (cylinders) of these engines, loads of their crankshaft-piston assemblies, and types of fuel combustion which can take place in these spaces during engine operation. It is highlighted that the analysed time-dependent loads of marine internal combustion engine crankshaftpiston assemblies are random processes. It is also indicated that the wear of elements of those assemblies resulting from their load should also be considered a random process. A hypothesis is formulated which explains random nature of load and the absence of the theoretically expected detonation combustion in engines supplied with such fuels as Diesel Oil, Marine Diesel Oil, and Heavy Fuel Oil. A model is proposed for fuel combustion in an arbitrary work space of a marine Diesel engine, which has the form of a stochastic four-state process, discrete in states and continuous in time. The model is based on the theory of semi-Markov processes.

Under suitable growth conditions on the cost function and the mean holding time, together with stability properties of the embedded Markov chains, we show the equivalence of several average cost criteria as well as the existence of stationary optimal policies with respect to each of these criteria.

This paper analyzes the semi-Markov model of technical objects age-replacements. The model includes two types of repairs: perfect repairs and minimal repairs. Minimal repairs in semi-Markov models have been studied in literature only to an extent. In this paper, the asymptotic availability coefficient and profit per time unit are considered as criteria for the quality of the system operation. The paper formulates various conditions for the occurrence of the maximum of criteria functions. The two numerical examples given at the end of the paper illustrate the results obtained in the paper.
W pracy bada się semimarkowski model wymian według wieku obiektów technicznych. W modelu uwzględnia się dwa rodzaje napraw: naprawy dokładne i naprawy minimalne. Naprawy minimalne w modelach semimarkowskich były badane w literaturze w niewielkim stopniu. Jako kryteria jakości pracy systemu rozważa się asymptotyczny współczynnik gotowości i zysk przypadający na jednostkę czasu. W pracy sformułowano różne warunki istnienia maksimum funkcji kryterialnych. Podane na końcu pracy dwa przykłady numeryczne ilustrują wyniki uzyskane w pracy.

The paper presents semi-Markov models of technical state transitions for diesel engines, useful for determining the reliability of engines. A possibility of application of a three-state model with a simplified matrix function, or even a two-state model, to determine reliability of the engines, has been described herein on examples of known from literature semi-Markov models, for the case when appropriate diagnosing systems (SDG) are used to identify the technical condition of the engines considered as diagnosed systems (SDN). A risk function and a renewal (restitution) function have been proposed for developing a two-state model of engine state transitions. An opportunity for considering the reliability of diagnosis for making operational decisions by applying the statistical decision theory, has also been presented. Conditional probability P(si/Ki) is recognized as a measure of reliability of diagnosis.
W artykule przestawiono semimarkowskie modele zmian stanów technicznych silników o zapłonie samoczynnym, przydatne do określenia niezawodności tych silników. Wykazano, na przykładzie znanych z literatury modeli semimarkowskich, że do określenia niezawodności tych silników możliwe jest zastosowanie modelu trójstanowego o uproszczonej macierzy funkcyjnej, a nawet modelu dwustanowego, przy zastosowaniu odpowiednich systemów diagnozujących (SDG) do identyfikacji stanu technicznego wspomnianych silników jako systemów diagnozowanych (SDN). Do opracowania dwustanowego modelu zmian stanów silników zaproponowano wykorzystanie funkcji ryzyka i funkcji intensywności odnowy (restytucji). Przedstawiono także możliwość uwzględnienia wiarygodności diagnozy przy podejmowaniu decyzji eksploatacyjnych w sytuacji zastosowania statystycznej teorii decyzji. Za miarę wiarygodności diagnozy przyjęto prawdopodobieństwo warunkowe P(si/Ki).

The article presents the possibility to control the real operation process of an arbitrary device installed in the marine power plant based on the four-state semi-Markov process, being the model of the process, which describes the transition process of operational states of the device (ek , k = 1, 2, 3, 4), and the transition process of its technical states (sl , l = 1, 2, 3). The operational states ek (k = 1, 2, 3, 4) have the following interpretation: e1 – active operation state resulting from the task performed by the device, e2 – state of ready-to-operate stop of the device, e3 – state of planned preventive service of the device, e4 – state of unplanned service of the device, forced by its damage. Whereas the interpretation of the technical states sl (l = 1, 2, 3) is as follows: s1 – state of full serviceability of the device, s2 – state of partial serviceability of the device, and s3 – state of unserviceability of the device. All these states are precisely defined for the ship main engine (SG). A hypothesis is proposed which justifies the use of this model to examine real state transitions in marine power plant device operation processes. The article shows the possibility to make operating decisions ensuring a rational course of the device operation process when the proposed model of this process and the dynamic programming method based on the Bellman’s principle of optimality are applied. The optimisation criterion adopted when making operating decisions is the expected profit to be gained as a result of functioning of the device in the time interval [τ0 , τm], being the sum of the expected profit gained in interval [τ0 , τ1 ] and to be gained in interval [τ1 , τm].

It is based on the theoretical backgrounds concerned with the semi-markov modelling of the complex technical systems operation processes and on the methods of these processes prediction. The illustrations of the proposed methods and procedures practical application in port, shipyard and maritime transport sector and are included.

In the paper an analytical model of port transportation systems environment and infrastructure influence on their operation processes is constructed and presented in an example of shipyard rope transportation systems in Naval Shipyard in Gdynia. A general semi-markov model of a system operation process is proposed and the methods of its parameters statistical identification are presented. Further, the shipyard rope transportation system and the ship rope elevator operation processes are analyzed and their operation states are defined. A preliminary collection of statistical data necessary to the ship transportation systems’ operation processes identification is included.

Opis:
The operation process of the complex industrial system is considered and its operation states are introduced. The semi-markov process is used to construct a general probabilistic model of the considered complex industrial system operation process. To build this model the vector of probabilities of the system operation process initials operation states, the matrix of probabilities of the system operation process transitions between the operation states, the matrix of conditional distribution functions and the matrix of conditional density functions of the system operation process conditional sojourn times in the operation states are defined. To describe the system operation process conditional sojourn times in the particular operation states the uniform distribution, the triangle distribution, the double trapezium distribution, the exponential distribution, the Weibull distribution and the normal distribution are suggested. Under these all assumptions from the constructed general model the main characteristics of the system operation process are find. The mean values of the system operation process conditional sojourn times in particular operation states having these distributions are calculated. Moreover, the unconditional distribution functions of the system operation process unconditional sojourn times in the particular operation states, the mean values of the system operation process unconditional sojourn times in the particular operation states, the limit values of the transient probabilities of the system operation process at the particular operation states and the mean values of the system operation process total sojourn times in the particular operation states are determined.

The complexities of real industrial systems operation processes require computational methods that can analyze the large data and evaluate the behaviours of these systems. The use of methods such as Bayesian Network, Formal Safety Assessment and Statistical-Model based method were discussed as possibilities. Of which, a computational tool, based on the Semi-Markov model, was developed. This tool was then applied to analyze the behaviour of the operation processes of the oil transportation system in Dębogórze, Poland. The analyses showed that the computational solutions generated compared favorably well with the analytical calculations, enabling possible extensions of the tool to include reliability and optimization evaluations to be explored.

The paper objectives are to present the methods and tools useful in the statistical identifying unknown parameters of the operation models of complex technical systems and to apply them in the maritime industry. There are presented statistical methods of determining unknown parameters of the semi-markov model of the complex technical system operation processes. There is also presented the chi-square goodness-of-fit test applied to verifying the distributions of the system operation process conditional sojourn times in the particular operation states. Applications of these tools to identifying and predicting the operation characteristics of a ferry operating at the Baltic Sea waters are presented as well.
