This sketch deals with Różewicz’s feeling that identity issues are unresolvable. This feeling, which became increasingly strong in the poet’s later works, led him to lose control over poetic form and employ more rhetoric as well as caused his works to be similar to performing arts. A description of the similarities between Różewicz’s cultural ideas and the ones that are present in popular rock music is an important part of this article.

Opis:
Current theories of literary research deriving from the sphere of postmodernist aestheticism make us particularly alert to the creative power of the word with regard to non-verbal reality. The word, subject to a variety of immanent conventions, including the convention of literary genre, creates unique textual entities. The alertness enables us to look anew at the autobiographic stamp so characteristic of Cyprian Norwid's work. Earlier scholars have used its presence to illustrate their biographic arguments, but as they discussed various elements of the poet's biography and cited passages from his works they erred (as I think) in ascribing equal information value to his pieces representing different literary genres. The present study was initially written on the assumption that the reading of Norwid's letters would confirm the vision of the poet's self-portrait familiar from other sources (and from letters, previously considered on a par with his other works). That expectation was borne out only in part. The letters do reveal first of all the familiar figure of a solitary man, injured by people and intending to lay down the pen for the fine arts or else to start writing exclusively in French. However, it also becomes clear that the solitude often was of Norwid's own choice. It was the effect of his moods or of his genuine dislike of people, sometimes a dislike they did nothing to deserve. The letters show a man obsessed by ambition. This trait, commendable from today's point of view because it was certainly helpful to Norwid in his tremendous task of creating novel things and in overcoming the many reverses of fortune, was regarded by his contemporaries as unhealthy ambition. It is seen at its clearest in his self-appointed role as an heir to the great trio of Polish Romantic poets (a trio which Norwid's own letters had in fact helped to create). Norwid was an indigent writer, materially dependent on other people. His letters reveal a variety of reactions to that undoubtedly humiliating dependence. The reactions were not always fair to others. As a perpetual debtor Norwid must have been a troublesome person, also because he could hardly ever find the humility and critical attitude that the situation required. What was tragic about the poet's situation was that such a critical attitude might have destroyed him as an artist. Norwid paid a high price for his independence, which only our own century has come to regard as the independence of a genius.

The article makes an attempt to characterize a Polish language teacher who works in a secondary school. The author uses Polish lessons reports which teachers fill out and tries to make generalizations concerning methodological solutions introduced by the teachers.  Opinions of Polish language teachers who implement objectives developed as a part of ‘Tools in Action’ programme were used to analyse such elements of a lesson as: motivation situation, the topic of a lesson or innovations introduced by the teachers to already prepared lesson plans. The teachers’ comments and suggestions which were included in the reports allowed to characterize the image of a Polish language teacher and to describe selected areas of lessons. Due to their realization the perception of an educational thought inscribed within the idea of teaching as extensive humane project is possible during the Polish lessons in secondary schools.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to examine whether their profession is a source of satisfaction for Polish accountants. The study used the results of a nationwide survey by the accountants association in Poland “2017 accountants’ portrait”. As it results from more than 2,500 responses by accountants, over three quarters of respondents assess their own job satisfaction highly. The image of an accountant satisfied with their job does not match the stereotypical perception of this profession. The respondents’ answers indicate that the level of satisfaction is related to the position held and the remuneration received. The perception of accountants as “generators of additional costs” or “business impediments” is also significant, which can lower satisfaction with working in accounting. The paper employs methods of a source analysis and a diagnostic survey. The data collected in the survey was analysed using simple statistical methods and was appropriately presented.

Opis:
The text emphasizes the difference between two artistic approaches. The first one of them is rare and comprises various kinds of artistic games with death undertaken by the artists, whereas the second one depends on playing with the subject of death, where death plays the part of an „embellishment” or some kind of attraction, which should draw the attention of the viewer. The text concentrates on such artistic realizations, in which the first of the mentioned approaches is visible. The selected „games with death” in the works by, among others, K. Kozyra, A. Szapocznikow, R. Opałka and Ch. Boltanski, are analysed. The analyses make use of theoretical works by, among others, H.G. Gadamer, P. Ariès, H. Belting, R. Barthes and G. Steiner.

The article analyzes a series of Adam Zagajewski’s self-portraits against the backdrop of his essays as well as a variety of contemporary theories, especially Paul de Man’s deconstruction and Michel Foucault’s spirituality philosophy. According to this analysis, Zagajewski’s self-portraits are approaching the kind of spiritual exercises described by Pierre Hadot: Zagajewski uses them to try to rebuild his personality, having designed its richer and more mature version, partly following the example of Zagajewski’s masters, such as Józef Czapski. Understood in this way, Zagajewski’s works contain a surprisingly wealthy theoretical substance, heretofore unrecognized by commentators.

Woolf’s maturing as a writer was deeply influenced by her traumatic experiences in childhood, the (in)capacitating states of mental instability, as well as her proto-feminist convictions. Long before Barthes, she toppled the traditional position of the author, and her literary enshrinement of “the other reality” reached unity with the world rather than individuality. This article ponders Woolf’s creative impulse and investigates her autobiographical writings to show the import of their impact on her fiction, which, as Woolfian scholarship suggests, can be viewed as autobiographical, too. I argue that philosophical hermeneutics sheds light on the self-portrait that emerges from Woolf’s autobiographical writings and offers a rewarding insight into her path of becoming an author. I assert that Paul Ricoeur’s philosophy of subjectivity, and, in particular, his notion of narrative identity provide a route to examine how Woolf discovers her writing voice. In light of his hermeneutics of the self, the dispersed elements of the narrative of life can be seen as a possibility of self-encounter. Woolf’s writings bespeak her gradually evolving self-knowledge and self-understanding, which come from the configuration of those separate “stories” into a meaningful whole. The article also interprets Woolf’s autobiographical writings through the prism of Michel Foucault’s reflection on discourse and subjectivity, indicating that her texts instantiate his assertion of the subject’s constant disappearance.

Double Index. The Self-Shadow in American Photography of the Second Half of the 20th Century

Opis:
The article focuses on the notion of the image of self-shadow in American photography in the second half of the twentieth century, understood as a shadow silhouette of the creator captured in a photograph. The two main problems that concern the author’s research are the lack of current, theoretical study on the problem of shadow in the history of photography from the perspective of art history (V. Stoichita, R. Casati, P. Cavanagh, H. Kanaan) and the lack of the definition of the phenomenon of self-shadow and its possible types in self-portraiture. The author’s proposition of a definition of self-shadow is based on selected photographs by four artists whose works touch upon the problem of shadow in the context of relations between the “self” and the “other” (Lee Friedlander), race and subjective invisibility (Shawn W. Walker), mask and the other-self (Andy Warhol), and the intimate recording of identity (Nan Goldin). In her analyses, the author discusses the problem of the hybrid ontology of the shadow, which is both visible and visual. In this understanding, the shadow not only refers to a physical body, present “here and now” but more importantly evokes a sense of presence, even when the artist’s body is absent in the picture. The double index refers to the image leaving its mark both in reality and on light-sensitive paper. The rudimentary, vitalistic relation linking the human body with its shadow is only a starting point for analyses of the complexity of its status and symbolism. The concepts framing Andy Warhol’s Polaroid are twinning, the mask, and the Jungian theory of the shadow archetype. To discuss the self-portrait of Shawn W. Walker, the author applies the literary-philosophical concept of invisibility based on writings from Black existentialists (W.E.B. Du Bois, F. Fanon, R. Ellison). The analyses of Lee Friedlander’s photograph have been based on the psychological distinction between the figures of the “self” and the “other”. The closing concepts that frame Nan Goldin’s self-portrait are the haptic thinking subject (M. Smolińska) and the notion of a diary. The critical apparatus of the study is supplemented by contemporary analyses of the myth of Narcissus, the mythical origins of the self-portrait, and the notion of the index (after R. Krauss, M. Michałowska, M.A. Doane).

This article offers an interpretation of Cyprian Norwid’s self-portrait Ipse ipsum created in 1857 in Paris. Given its intriguing approach, references to the poet’s biography and literary works, as well as rich symbolism, the drawing occupies a particular place in the collection of over 20 cartoon self-portraits by the author of Promethidion. Its presentation is accompanied by an outline of its turbulent history and a brief literature overview. The circumstances in which it was drawn prove crucial for the understanding of Norwid’s approach to his own image. Selfcreation is adopted as the pivotal perspective in the light of which the self-portrait is interpreted as an image presenting the author of Vade-mecum as an artist, an emigrant, and a pilgrim, with the historical, biographical, and literary contexts playing important roles in all three representations. The poems Czy podam się o amnestię [Shall I Request Amnesty] and Pielgrzym [The Pilgrim] shed some extra light on the drawing of Norwid standing on the map of the world and surrounded by barking dogs, allowing us to search for deeper meanings in the poet’s spiritual profile.

The subject of this article are the strategies as well as paradoxes of creating by Jan Szczepański his self-portrait in various genres of texts. The authoress displays how the sociologist gives a signature to his articles and essays, generalizing his personal experience (peasant roots, the Protestant primacy of a duty), and also how complex relations appear between his publications and diary. In that scattered self-portrait a key issue turns out to be the repetitions and transformations of several leitmotifs, and moreover their involving in rhetoric, which, like autocreation, both disturbs and helps with recounting “who I am”. With reference to the conceptions of i.a. Lejeune, Beaujour and Ricoeur, the authoress analyses how Szczepański arranges the project of his life and how in his works he contends with frustration resulted from (apparent) not carrying that project out. The destination of this article is to show that despite evident dissonance between the word and life in the sociologist’s writings, the imperative of creation of “work” remains his biography’s axis and the creating of self-portrait does not mean imposing an artificial order on life.
W nawiązaniu do koncepcji m.in.

Due to the development of social media, posting one's photos is becoming increasingly popular; they often take the form of, so called, ‘selfie’. The phenomenon of photographing oneself has also occurred in cultural institutions, including museums. The museums are implementing various strategies of reacting to people taking pictures of themselves with exhibits at the background. The article presents an analysis of these reactions, and, based on that, various ways of defining the functions and role of the contemporary museum. The author also attempts to provide an answer to the following question: is posting photographs by visitors an element of creating their own image (‘the Culture of Narcissism’), or is it rather a form of interaction with heritage, of a dialogue with the presented contents (‘remix culture’)?

When general Francisco Franco took over the reign in Spain a period called Francist dictatorship began. Propaganda began to be used on a large scale, starting with the indoctrination of the journalists to make them represent “the truth” convenient for the national authorities in their material. A positive image of the regime was made also directly through organizing lavish national celebrations such as army parades. The actions were taken in such a manner, that Franco was portrayed as a brave, strong, eminent leader. Often, inconvenient information was hidden only to not destroy the ideally planned nation’s image in the eyes of Spanish society. However, the greatest propaganda influence had the Cinematographic Documents Chronicle, which aim was to inform about the local and world events, whose materials were often untrue and broadcasted with delay.
