Opis:
Selenium, a non-metal chemical element, is present in the human body in trace quantities and accumulates mostly in the thyroid gland. Selenium-rich food includes offal, meat and meat products, seafood, milk and dairy products, yeast, and bread. The aim of the study is to collate and discuss research results obtained over the last 13 years regarding the influence of selenium in diseases of the thyroid gland. Selenium deficiency can lead to a number of thyroid diseases. Over 30 proteins containing selenium called selenoproteins, and their numerous functions in the human body, have been identified. Research shows that selenium is essential for proper synthesis, activation and metabolism of thyroid hormones. It also can postpone the development of hypothyroidism, reduce the level of anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) and thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb), normalize thyroid echogenicity in ultrasound examination, improve the condition of patients with Graves’ disease andautoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis), and reduce the incidence of postpartum thyroid dysfunction. The recommended dose of selenium for adults is 45-55 μg 24 h-1 (Polish recommendations) or 55 μg 24 h-1 (recommendations in the US). Selenium may have a toxic effect in doses above 400 μg 24 h-1; therefore a threshold of 400 μg 24 h-1 has been adopted as the maximum safe dose. The role of selenium supplementation in diseases of the thyroid gland is still subject to discussion.

Opis:
Selenium is one of the trace elements playing a crucial role in a proper function of living organisms. Selenium intake varies, largely based on the selenium content of food. The daily Se intake recommended for adults amounts to 55 μg per day. The mean level of selenium in the population varies considerably between countries. Recent studies on the selenium dietary intakes in Poland showed that it is not sufficient to meet the daily requirement for this microelement so it is strongly recommended to employ selenium supplementation. The commercial product SEL-BRCA1®  being a selenium diet supplement was subjected to chemical and microbial analysis to determine its stability in storage time and conditions. Basing on the obtained results it can be stated that the stability of studied supplement, stored in the closed bottles, can be confirmed for the period of time up to 45 months after the production date and it is not recommended to store opened bottles for the period of time longer than 12 months. The studied supplement showed a very high microbial stability what underscores its usefulness as human medicines.

Background: Numerous authors have shown that selenium (Se) concentration and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in plasma of chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients are lower than in healthy subjects, but there are only few publications on the level of GSH-Px protein in those patients and no reports on the effect of Se supplementation to HD patients on the level of this enzyme. Subjects and Methods: Se concentration and GSH-Px protein level in plasma were measured in a group of 30 CKD patients on hemodialysis (HD) supplemented with 200 µg Se/day for 3 months, and 28 patients on HD administered with placebo. Se concentration was measured by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry and plasma GSH-Px protein level by the sandwich ELISA method using polyclonal antibody specific for human plasma GSH-Px. Results: Se concentration in patients on placebo did not change throughout the 3-month study period, but increased significantly in Se supplemented group. Se supplementation to CKD patients on HD had no effect on the level of GSH-Px protein. Conclusions: The lack of GSH-Px protein in CKD patients on HD is not linked to Se deficiency since the level of this element increased after Se supplementation while enzyme protein level did not change. The damaged kidney of HD patients is unable to synthesize GSH-Px, even after induction with selenium.

Selenium consumption in Poland is low, less than the required amount of Se for adults. The deficiency of Se may lead to many diseases. Food enriched with selenium can improve the Se status in humans. The aim of this experiment was to determine the effect of different selenium forms (organic vs inorganic) and dietary levels (0.3 or 0.5 mg kg-1) on pork quality. An experiment with 45 crossbred fatteners (Polish Large White × Polish Landrace × Duroc) was conducted to determine the effect of a selenium source (organic – selenized yeast Sel-Plex vs inorganic – sodium selenite) and its dietary level on pork quality. Pigs were fed diets supplemented with 0.3 or 0.5 mg Se kg-1 of diet for 42 days (the second fattening period). After slaughter, meat quality parameters: pH45, pH24, drip loss, WHC, chemical composition, colour and Se concentration in m. longissimus lumborum, were estimated. There were significant differences in the pH24 value but the meat had no quality defects. Dietary addition of Se caused a significant (P ≤ 0.01) increase in the ash content of m. longissimus lumborum. The Se form had no significant effect on drip loss or water holding capacity. The higher level of supplemental Se (0.5 mg kg-1 diet) improved the lightness of meat, which was darker in colour. The Se concentration in m. longissimus lumborum was found to increase significantly (P ≤ 0.01) when organic selenium was added at 0.5 mg kg-1 in the second fattening period. The addition of inorganic (0.5 mg) as well as organic selenium (selenized yeast Sel-Plex) to diets for growing pigs had a beneficial effect on the colour of meat, which then became more appealing to consumers, but had no significant effect on drip loss and water holding capacity. Supplementing pig diets with the organic form of selenium (Sel-Plex), compared to the inorganic form, increased the Se concentration in pork meat.

Opis:
An optimum nano-Se content in a diet of highly productive broilers has not been defined yet. Meanwhile, there are contradictory reports regarding effects of nano-Se on production traits and the etiology of possible positive effects. The aims of the present study were to test the hypothesis that low levels of nano-Se can improve productivity and metabolic functions during a 42-day-long broiler production cycle, to determine an optimum nano-Selenium (nano-Se) concentration of the diet, and finally to explore the etiology of these effects. One-hundred-eighty 1-day-old, male, Ross 308 broiler chicks were used in a completely randomized experiment, where the birds were placed in experimental pens, in three replicate pens of 10 chicks each, making a total of 18 experimental units. They were assigned diets with different nano-Selenium levels. All birds were fed an almost identical diet from 1 until 42 d, different only in the nano-Se content, namely: 1) control (CON) group 0.0 nano-Se, 2) NS1 group 0.1 mg kg-1 dietary nano-Se, 3) NS2 group 0.2 mg kg-1 dietary nano-Se, 4) NS3 group 0.3 mg kg-1 dietary nano-Se, 5) NS4 group 0.4 mg kg-1 dietary nano-Se, 6) NS5 group 0.5 mg kg-1 dietary nano-Se, supplied from 1 to 42 day of life. The significance level was declared at P<0.05. The final bird weight was higher and production cost was lower in NS3 and NS4 groups compared to CON, NS1 and NS5. The weight of an eviscerated carcass was lower in CON group compared to the other groups. The serum blood parameters as well as the weight of organs related with the immune system were not significantly different between groups. Nano-Se supplementation positively affected body weight gain (BWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR). Higher BWG was achieved owing to better FCR rather than higher feed intake. The supplementation of 0.3-0.4 mg nano-Se kg-1 is the optimum level to be added as a feed additive in broiler diets, increasing animal productivity and diminishing environmental impact

Opis:
Magnesium and selenium belong to important bioelements. Magnesium is the second most abundant intracellular macroelement, which takes part in the metabolism of carbohydrates, nucleic acids, protein and lipids. Selenium is an essential microelement, whose deficit has been stated in many different pathological states. Much research on safe and effective selenium supplementation has been performed for the last fifty years but the results still remain unsatisfactory. The aim of our study was to investigate the influence of inorganic sodium selenite Na2SeO3 and two selenoorganic compounds synthetized at our chair on magnesium concentration in tissues of adolescent male Wistar rats. Inorganic selenite was administered as a water solution, whereas organic compounds: 4-(o-tolilo)-selenosemikarbazyd of 2-chlorobenzoic acid of a chain structure (ORG-C) and 3-(o-chlorobenzoylamino)-2-(o-tolylimino)-4- -methyl-4-selenazoline of a ring structure (ORG-R) were suspended in emulsion (oil, arabic gum and water). Selenium compounds were given to rats at a dose of 5⋅10–4 mg Se g–1 b.w. once a day for a period of 10 days. The control group was treated with saline. The administration was performed with use of a stomach tube. In comparison to the control group, selenium supplementation caused decrease in magnesium concentration in kidney and lung tissues, but did not cause any changes in the brain and heart muscle. In the liver and spleen it was only ring selenazoline that affected magnesium concentration, increasing it in the liver and decreasing in the spleen. In the femoral muscle it was only the selenosemicarbazide chain that exerted the significant effect causing a decrease in Mg concentration vs the control group. Selenium supplementation influences the tissue magnesium concentrations depending on tissue and structure of the supplement. Irrespective of the administered compound, it lowered magnesium in kidneys and lungs but caused no changes in the brain and heart muscle. In the liver, spleen and femoral muscle, alterations in the magnesium concentration were dependent on the provided supplement.
Nieorganiczny selenian(IV) sodu podawano w postaci wodnego roztworu, natomiast organiczne związki selenu: 4-(o-tolilo)-selenosemikarbazyd kwasu 2-chlorobenzesowego (ORG-C, budowa łańcuchowa) i 3-(2-chlorobenzoiloamino- )-2-(o-toliloimino-)-4-metylo-4-selenazolina (ORG-R, budowa pierścieniowa) w formie emulsji złożonej z oleju, gumy arabskiej i wody. W tkance mięśnia uda jedynie łańcuchowy selenosemikarbazyd wywarł istotny wpływ, powodując obniżenie stężenia Mg w stosunku do grupy kontrolnej.

The level of mineral utilization depends on many factors related to animals as well as to the chemical form of given nutrients. It has been experimentally demonstrated that animals utilize inorganic forms of minerals less efficiently than organic ones. Hence, an attempt has been made to evaluate the bioavailability of selenium bound in different compounds to lambs. Selenium supplementation in fodder mixtures was another aspect included in our tests. Thus, an experiment was conducted on 48 growing lambs, testing the level and chemical forms of selenium in fodder mixtures for animals. In group I (the control) lambs received fodder mixture without any selenium supplement. In the experimental groups, selenium was supplemented as sodium selenite in the amount 0.2 mg Se kg-1 d.m. feeds (II), or selenium enriched yeast (Se-yeast) in the amounts of 0.1 and 0.2 mg Se kg-1 d.m. of feed groups III and IV, respectively. At the end of the experiment, when animals had reached 35 kilos of weight, blood samples were taken. The activity of glutathione peroxidase was estimated in heparinized blood samples. Eight lambs were chosen from each group and killed to collect samples of soft tissues (liver, kidney, brain, muscle). The content of selenium was determined in the tissue samples. Supplementation of feeds for lambs with selenium, both inorganic (sodium selenite) and organic (Se-yeast), increased the content of the element in soft tissues of animals. The highest level of the element was found in the liver and kidneys: 4.65 and 4.90 and 2.10 and 2.30 mg kg-1 fresh tissue, of the lambs receiving sodium selenine and Se-yeast in the amount 0.2 mg Se kg-1 D.M. of feed (groups II and IV), respectively. Selenium compounds added to feeds given to lambs significantly (P£0.01) increased activity of GSH-Px in blood, especially in the case of animals which received yeast enriched with selenium. In blood of the lambs which received feeds with Se-yeast in the amount 0.2 mg Se kg-1 d.m. of feed (group IV), the activity of glutathione peroxidase was by 129.71 U gHb-1 higher, and of the animals which received Se-yeast in the amount 0.1 mg kg-1 d.m. or sodium selenite, the activity of the enzyme was higher by 86.33 and 86.35 U gHb-1, respectively, than the activity of this enzyme in blood of animals from the control group. Supplementation of lambs’ rations with Se in the form of selenite or yeast enriched with selenium forms increased the content of Se in soft tissues and gluthatione peroxidase activity in comparison with animals which did not receive additional doses of this nutrient in fodder mixtures. The availability of Se was more profoundly affected by the amount of the element added rather than its form.
W grupie I (kontrolnej) jagnięta otrzymywały mieszankę bez dodatku selenu. W grupach (II) doświadczalnych mieszanki uzupełniano seleninem sodu w ilości 0.2 mg Se kg-1 s.m. paszy, a w grupach III i IV – drożdżami wzbogaconymi w selen (drożdże-Se), odpowiednio w ilości: 0.1 i 0.2 mg Se kg-1 s.m. paszy. W zliofilizowanym materiale biologicznym oznaczono zawartość selenu. II i IV). Stosowane w paszy jagniąt związki selenu wyraźnie (P≤0.01) zwiększyły aktywności GSH-Px we krwi owiec, zwłaszcza u zwierząt, które w mieszance otrzymywały drożdże wzbogacone w selen.

This study examined the impact of oral supplementation with a new organic selenium preparation (selenitetriglycerides) on the health of camels (Camelus dromedarius). The experiment was conducted on 7 female camels, which were given 240 mg per animal per day of selenitetriglycerides with an oesophageal probe and subsequently monitored for 28 days. Blood samples for tests were collected 10 times (on day 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 14 and 28) and the following parameters were determined: the level of selenium, vitamin E, the activity of aspartate transaminase (AST), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGTP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK) and the concentration of total protein, glucose, urea and creatinine. The following hematological parameters were determined in whole blood: white blood cell count (WBC), red blood cell count (RBC), hemoglobin level (HGB), platelet count (PLT) and packed cell volume (PCV). Selenium serum level increased significantly on the second day (from 40.18 µg l-1 to 198.79 µg l-1), peaked on day 7 (514.76 µg l-1) and remained at a statistically significant level relative to the baseline to the end of the experiment. Clinical observations and analysis of the hematological parameters, liver and kidney function parameters did not show any negative effect of selenitetriglycerides on camel health. The results indicate that selenitetriglycerides can be a safe and effective method of selenium supplementation in camels.

The aim of this study was to compare the effect of parenteral and oral supplementation of Selenium (Se) and vitamin E (VTE) on selected antioxidant parameters in blood and colostrum as well as their effect on the incidence of mastitis in dairy cows during the final phase of gravidity (6 weeks) and first two weeks after calving. For the practical part of the study 36 dairy cows of Slovak pied breed in the second to fourth lactation-gestation cycle were selected. The animals weredivided into three groups: the control (C) and two experimental groups (D1 and D2). The selected groups were treated as follows: in group D1 products containing Se (Selevit inj.) and vitamin E (Erevit sol. inj.) were administered intramuscularly twice, six and three weeks prior to parturition; in group D2 a vitamin-minerals supplement in the form of sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) and dl-α-tocopherol acetate were supplemented orally for six weeks calving. The blood samples were collected from the vena jugularis in dairy cows approximately 42 days before calving (control sampling), on parturition day, and the 14th day after calving. Higher concentrations of Se and VTE were found in the blood plasma samples of both experimental groups collected on the day of parturition. In addition, the orally supplemented group (D2) showed higher Se and α-tocopherol concentrations in blood plasma on the14th day after calving as well a reduction of occurrence of mastitis by about 25 % compared to the control group. The relationship between inflammatory response and oxidative stress was also confirmed. The concentrations of milk malondialdehyde indicating lipid peroxidation during mastitis were significantly higher in milk samples from infected cows than in milk samples from healthy animals in each monitored group. In order to prevent oxidative stress and moderate inflammatory response in dairy cows it is very important to optimally balance their nutritive needs with an appropriate ratio of Se and VTE supplements. Therefore we still recommend supplementation of the cows’ postpartum dietwith 0.5 mg of Se/kg dry matter (DM) and 102 mg of dl-α-tocopherol acetate/kg DM to stabilize their optimal blood levels, stimulate the activity of glutathione peroxidase and reduce the incidence of mastitis.
